Atomic Blonde: How Director David Leitch Made Music its Own Character - Duration: 3:44.
I'm Caitlin White for Uproxx,
his newest masterpiece, "Atomic Blonde,"
it's brilliant use of soundtrack
and the parallels of 1980s Berlin and today.
Thanks for being with us, David.
Thank you.
Yeah.
So, this is your first feature film, solo, as a director.
What was it that drew you to this film, specifically.
Sometimes you just read a piece of material
and you start to see pictures
and you start to hear music and you can't explain it.
I love, like, nonverbal storytelling
and I think that there's a lot of it in the beginning
of this script
and I started to attach those images.
More specifically, songs.
I was struck, particularly, how the music comes into play, almost as it's own character.
It goes back to that initial reading of the material and, like, how do you reinvent this
stuffy, Cold War spy movie.
You think about the period its set in and the city, Berlin '89, like the height of MTV;
I just started to see music become an essential element.
Then as I did my first director's pass on the script, I started to put the needle drops
in there, the specific cues that would be in line with the visual storytelling.
I noticed that an original song will come in and then, later, newer versions –
Yeah.
It felt like a good way to bring 1989 into now and back.
The idea was that we would have songs from the '80s and then we would also reprise them
with younger, up and coming artists.
Tyler Bates, the composer of "John Wick," helped from the beginning to sort of find
a soundtrack that seamlessly sort of stitched the songs together, but also discover young
artists that would want to rerecord, like Health.
Clearly, the historical context of the music is related to the time period of the film,
but it also felt like the songs selected perfectly embodied sort of the aesthetic of the film
How did those interplay for you?
A track carries an emotional context.
So you can transport the audience immediately with a song.
One song and a visual can communicate something that, you know, pages of dialogue wouldn't.
Watching all of the unrest and all of the protests in Berlin, in the film, I was reminded
of what's been going on in America right now, and one other thing I noticed about the music
is how much it home that often these social movements are started by youth and are started
by artists and the counterculture is coming from that, which so often includes music as
a cornerstone.
Right.
Did that tie in to some of your musical selections?
Totally.
I mean, I think that's...Berlin is all about the counterculture.
I think that's one of the reasons why it spoke to me from the beginning and I go back to,
like, that first read of the script and, like, understanding the set piece and then, like,
holy crap, this is taking place in Berlin.
This should not be a stuffy noir.
This is about counterculture.
This about rebellion.
This is about rock and roll and that's why music became such a part.
In terms of the political climate and where things are now, we probably had no idea, you
know, while we were shooting that some of these themes would resonate with what's going
on today.
but I'm glad that it is and a lot of different things.
We weren't necessarily trying to be messengers for today, but history is its own messenger,
I guess, right?

NAVIBAND Live Performance at Belsat Music Live, 2017 (with English subtitles) - Duration: 25:04.
This is "Belsat Music Live".
A program in which the current Belarusian music sounds.
You are welcomed by Mira Schultz. Our guest today is NaviBand.
Siarhei Budkin: Positive charisma, excellent voices and an impeccable sense of melody
Naviband, perhaps, the brightest representatives of the new Belarusian music.
A boy with a guitar and a girl with piano
eemingly in love with each other,
tender voices sing about hugs and happiness.
Navi, or as they ask themselves to be called, NaviBand,
began almost 4 years ago, as a duet of Artem Lukyanenko and Ksyusha Zhuk.
The first song immediately hit the target and became their called card.
(Music Video NaviBand - Abdymi mya ne (Hug me), 2013
Trying to create a quality creative product
labeled "Love Music" on the Belarusian pop stage,
usually ends in failure.
Because some have one by one,
the second is pathetic,
and the third vulgar.
Navi here is a rare exception to the rules.
They do everything delicately, mentally and tastefully.
At a certain point within the boundaries of the duet
Artem and Ksenia became tight аnd now they give a full sound and never use a phonogram.
And people are happy to see them everywhere -
both state TV channels and on independent TV channels and festivals
Sergey: With all ease of they music NaviBand feel great on the rock scene.
They generally fall into the unreal format of music for everyone, it seems.
(NaviBand - Vyberu sam (I'll choose it myself.)
Mira: Cool! Well, we will not touch the topic of Eurovision tonight,
I think you already gave many interviews on this topic,
and maybe a little tired of it.
I'm interested in something else.
You can so very harmoniously feel and balance in the official media field
and in an independent, if I may say so.
First of all, tell me how you do it.
Artеm: You know, if we knew the answer, then we would tell and to share with someone.
Well, we don't know. Actually.
So it happens. Well, we are happy to perform wherever we are called
and play our music, give people our warmth and our mood.
And to answer the question .. Ksusha, do you know?
Ksusha: Well, I think we just sing about happiness and when you sing about happiness,
it's not very important where you do it. And how.
Artem: Well, if, probably, be more pragmatic, then we can say that we are format.
And we can play a full sound where indie rock, pop-rock,
and the same songs can be suitable for television, and for radio, and for some underground concerts.
So, probably, this is the answer. The most logical answer.
Mira: But you are probably the only band,
well, or one of the few that can perform and Basowiszcza on Independence Day or the Day of the city.
Ksusha: Palace can also be.
Mira: Palace can also, ahah. Is it important for you to name the event that you are invited to?
Artem: This summer we played and Basowiszcza
and the Slavic Bazaar also didn't pass by us for the second year in a row,
but I like to come there also.
There has its own atmosphere, is quite different.
The audience in the hall took us very warmly.
When an almost full amphitheater sings your song - it's cool.
And we don't want to refuse such emotions,
because this is the most important thing for which we work.
We give energy, and when it comes back to us it's like a drug. It is impossible to pass by or refuse.
Mira: In your opinion, can music be out of politics and vice versa?
Artem: Hmm, this is a question that is very principled for us.
Firstly, I generally don't like word "patriotism", because this is not love.
Mira: But it's you who said this word, not me.
Artem: I said quote.
Mira: Alright.
Artem: So, as they called and talked.
I just don't like this word, because it doesn't express love for one's land.
Mira: Let's change this word.
Artem: Well, love of your land, where you were born.
And patriotism it is artificially invented concept, I think.
Just to practice, I don't know, specially.
Well, you can't specifically be forced to be, as they say, a patriot.
Making you love your land is impossible.
Either there is this love and you feel it, or you don't feel it.
And you can wander and be a man of peace.
Ksusha: For example, we wrote song "This Land" and song "Story of My Life".
These songs about Belarus.
And they appeared, because we, I think, felt something very strong inside,
felt our belonging to this land, to our country.
And on the one hand you can say that they, (for Artem) as you don't like to say, patriotic.
But there is not a single word about Belarus or anything else, and for us it's very..
Artem: Well, land is..
Ksusha: Well, yes, yes, but I mean that..
Mira: Not emphasized.
Artem: Specifically word "Belarus".
There are in our country, such a policy is that word "Belarus" can be used a hundred times,
but it is an artificial song, a declaration of love for their land, I think.
As for music and politics, we are generally categorical in this regard,
we have absolutely nothing to do with politics, what is happening in it.
We live in this land and in this country,
we have the opportunity to earn money,
to perform, to live by this and develop, to move on.
And every year I see how we grow.
And we have the opportunity to develop, so I don't see any reason
to associate this with any insults or become attached to politics.
We are generally against politics in music.
Ksusha: Yes.
Mira: Well, let's get back to the music.
Artem: Today we play a song,
it will be premiere.
For the first time we will play it in such a composition of musicians.
It tells the story of two people who love each other,
but they have something doesn't work.
They really want to save their relationship, and that's it.
This story will now be told in the song "Don't leave".
(NaviBand - Ne pakidaj (Don't leave)
Mira: Ksusha, Artem, you are certainly one of the most beautiful couples in the Belarusian music.
Tell us what was the first.
Did you converge on the background of creativity or did you first have love?
Artem: This is the most provocative question.
Mira: I have some provocative questions in my stock.
Ksusha: Well, at first I had a love affair with Alexander Tobolskiy.
Mira: That's how it turns out, fate has developed, Alexander.
Artem: He doesn't have a microphone, he can't answer.
Mira: Yes, I understand, but by his smile everything is clear.
Artem: Of course, we can say that there couldn't have been this project without certain feelings, it's true.
Ksusha: Mutual sympathy.
Artem: But what happens is happening next to us.
And we have such a story with Ksusha that so far it's not time for her.
That's all. Perhaps we will talk about it, but a little later.
Mira: That's the secret. Who is the main one in your work?
Artem: We can't say that we have someone main one.
Well, we have, for example, Ksenia, who writes songs, I, who write songs.
And we just unite it all into one.
Therefore, we can't say that we all exist separately or that someone's main one.
Because we really love and appreciate those people, which are next to us at the moment.
Well, it's already one organism.
Mira: And your personal relationships are reflected somehow at work in band?
Ksusha: No, I think no.
Ksusha: When we are working on music in the studio, for example, or rehearsing something, this was not.
We work and that's it.
The rest is not so important.
Of course I, as a girl, can be capricious a little.
Something like "Oh, I want it" or "I want something else", but we have people like that, not only Artem..
Artem: They can make fun of this. Is it right, Sasha?
Ksusha: Yes, yes, for example, Sasha.
Mira: Apparently, Sasha is just a cult person in your band.
Around him is just a pillar, around which the whole band is built.
Ksusha: We have this around everyone. This is director. Vova.
He's the director. A real director. He is the director of the fitness club.
Here so it is possible to tell. I will not advertise, but like that.
Mira: Can you say that NaviBand exists and is saved on your love?
Ksusha: It's saved by the love of our music.
Mira: No, between you.
Artem: Probably, some band would be.
Mira: But not with such sunny music, is it?
Artem: Well, probably. I don't know.
Now band is saved because of love for each other in general
and because of desire to do something for Belarus,
for people.
Well, now we feel mission.
We are inspired by many things, but we always feel the mission that we have a task.
We can't upset our listeners, who expect us to have some emotions.
Ksusha: And we can't upset our musicians either.
Artem: We promise them that we will make money only with music.
We will be the whole band. It is not so difficult, more precisely, not so easy. Well, not so difficult. Everything is possible.
Mira: It would be a wish, they tell the truth.
Mira: I think it's time to listen to your "Story". One of the stories of your life.
Artem: "Story of my life" - this song is two-sided.
Song that entered our album.
And first of all there is told the story of a man
who believes that in the future he will have everything, as best as possible.
That he his goals and make their own way to be happy.
And the other side is the person's faith in the best life of his country.
Sergey: Listen, Mira, it seemed to me that NaviBand, as they now call themselves,
behaved like real stars.
Not a Belarusian spill, but an international one.
People who know that they are loved
and that they can fall in love with everyone else.
They stayed on top.
Mira: I think that they not only know that they are loved,
but they know that they can do anything to make them loved
and those who hear them for the first time.
And in my opinion this is absolutely justified, because they work a lot, I see.
They know what they are doing, they know what challenge will be after this.
And the fact that they are stars. In my opinion they really are.
Sergey: Well, what I said in the preface that this is a rare format of music for everyone,
they confirmed it today.
You are so magically brought to the answers that they can play and Basowiszcza and Slavic Bazaar,
but they do't lose their core, I think.
Mira: And they explained. It's the music of the sun,
and everyone loves the music of the sun.
And our country is not that the sun from time to time is not enough,
we, I think, lacked such band.
This niche was absolutely free, quiet and they very quickly took it.
Sergey: But not because they are so naive in their work. I'm afraid they might be used.
Mira: Do you think that these people with such a huge core,
can somehow be used?
I think no. For some reason I am sure that if nothing has happened before,
everything will be fine with them.
Sergey: It's good that you are sure. But I'll put the dots in here, okay? But I want to be sure just like you.
Mira: Well, we agreed. After a while we'll see.

Xander Music - Cell (Official Music Video) - Duration: 2:43.
You squandered your abilities, silly monkey
Concerned less with love, and more with that filthy money
And trivialities, none of that really matters
Come and battle me, if you want your brain splattered
I'll blow your mind, harm you like a casualty
Cuz you're unarmed and I'm armed like the cavalry
So on with the savagery, here's a little tidbit
Idiots like you are the reason that we nitpick
Too infatuated with your visage tome
Not everything you do needs to be written home
Lie till the cows come, sigh cuz you down some
Log on for validation, and you found some
But in your search you neglected your intellect
Your motivation's hindered, ideas impotent
It's kinda sad I have to tell you this shit's nonexistent
Can you be happy knowing that you never missed it?
You're trapped in a cell, though the cell is external
The internal landscape is infinite and circular
Deeper down the dopamine dungeon
Digging in the dung heap till it's up to your stomach
Now you're probably wondering, how'd I get into this mess?
That thought lasts a second, then you swipe left
Continue on with my happy-ass lifestyle
I know that I'm happy cuz I know how to smile
But smiles don't last, neither do their causes
I need more stimulation, before I die from boredom
Who cares about a long run? I've been long done
I scrolled through all the memes, I mean, I seen all of 'em
But you know, all of this is fleeting
Transitory, we might as well be dreaming
Would this be your life if you could ever dream it?
Looks like a nightmare, the way I sees it
