How to Solve By Completing the Square (NancyPi) - Duration: 17:33.

Hi guys! I'm Nancy.

I'm going to show you how to solve by completing the square.

What is completing the square?

It means getting your equation into a neat

perfect square form like this.

Where you have x plus or minus a number squared equals another number.

Why would you want to solve this way?

Good question. It's not the best way usually.

It's usually easier or faster to solve by factoring

if possible.

Or quadratic formula. Which you can always use.

But probably you've been told

that you have to solve by completing the square.

So you need to know how to do it.

So I will show you the easiest way to solve by completing the square.

Unfortunately, you're not given this form straight away

you have to get it.

Usually you're given one of these forms.

OK, these are the cases that I'm going to show you.

One case is if you have just x^2.

Positive x^2 as your highest term.

Another case is if you have a coefficient greater than 1 in front of your x^2.

Like 2x^2, 3x^2, etc.

Third case is if you have a negative coefficient in front of x^2.

-x^2, etc.

And this case I put here to show you that

if you get something like this that doesn't have

an x term, a middle term,

you can't complete the square.

Sometimes people get confused about that.

So really I'm going to show you these 3 cases.

OK. Say you have an equation like this

that starts with x^2. Positive x^2.

The first step, actually for all of these completing the square problems.

The first step is to move this constant to the right.

So in this equation the way you would do that

is to add 7 to both sides.

So always just move that constant over to the right.

So what you get is: x^2 + 6x = (positive) 7.

Notice that the sign flipped. That will always happen.

If it was negative here, it will be positive there.

If it was positive here, it would be negative on the right side.

The next step

is to add a number to both sides.

So you're going to have plus something and plus something.

What number do you add?

You always get the number by taking

the coefficient of x, the coefficient of the middle term,

in this case 6.

Dividing it by 2 and squaring it.

And that will be what you'll add to the left and right side.

So in this case it's: (6/2)^2

Which simplifies to 3^2.

Which equals 9.

So we'll be adding 9 to the left side and right side.

So here we fill in + 9.

We've added the same thing to both sides.

What you do to one side you must do to the other.

So that we don't change the overall value of the equation.

So that it's balanced.

OK, so in the next line that simplifies to

x^2 + 6x + 9

And on the right side we can combine these numbers into 16.

7 + 9 = 16

Why did we do that? Why add a number to both sides?

The only reason is so that immediately after

we can write the left side as a perfect square.

x plus or minus some number squared = 16.

The number you write here is always

half of what the middle coefficient was.

So in this problem is was 6/2.

Positive 3.

If this were a negative 6, you would put negative 3.

So always in the perfect square side

use half of what the middle coefficient was.

So now we have: (x + 3)^2 = 16

That's great you've completed the square.

You have something that will be very easy to solve now.

And the whole point of doing that was so that you can

square root both sides in order to solve.

We can literally draw a big square root on the left side and a square root on the right side.

Be careful! Because when you square root

a constant on one side, you actually get two solutions.

Positive and negative.

Very important. And many people forget this.

So try to remember when you square root the side that has the constant

you immediately have two solutions possible.

The positive and the negative version.

OK, on the left side meanwhile

what that does is get rid of the square.

So you just have: x + 3 (what was inside the parenthesis)

equals positive and negative square root of 16.

You probably know, square root of 16 is 4.

Since 16 is a perfect square.

So then in the next line you can write

x + 3 = (plus and minus) 4

The easiest thing now is to separate this into two solutions.

You're going to solve for two different answers.

One equation you can write

using the positive version.

So: x + 3 = 4

And the other one, you'll use the -4 version.

x + 3 = -4

It's very important to separate it out, because you'll end up with two solutions.

So what this gives you using basic algebra

subtracting constants is: x = 4 - 3

Or positive 1.

And on this side: x = -4 - 3

Which is negative 7.

So your two solutions

using completing the square are:

x = 1 and x = -7

OK, say you have an equation that looks like this

with 2x^2 or 3x^2, etc.

where the coefficient of x^2 is something bigger than 1.

The first step will be the same.

You're going to move this constant to the right side.

So since it's -3 right now, you can add 3 to both sides

in order to move it to the right.

And you get: 2x^2 - 10x = (positive) 3

OK. Now what you have to do

because there is a 2 attached to the x^2

(or 3, or 4, etc.)

You have to divide it out from every term in the equation.

That will make it easier for you to complete the square.

It will make it possible for you to complete the square.

So you're dividing every term by 2.

That includes the right hand side.

So what you get is

just x^2 now (which is good)

minus 5x (since it was -10x/2)

and on the right side

You have 3/2, which is already in simplest form.

It's just 3/2.

On the right side.

The next step is to add a number to both sides.

So you're going to add something here

and the same something here.

What number do you add?

You add...

this coefficient of x

but divided by 2 and squared.

So it's always

the coefficient of x over 2 then squared.

And that is what you add to the left side and the right side.

So in this problem that's:

(-5/2)^2

which simplifies to

positive 25

(because -5 * -5 is +25)

over 2^2 on the bottom. Which is 4.

So you're adding the fraction 25/4 to both sides.

I gave you one that has a fraction

because a lot of time completing the square problems

end up a little ugly and have fractions involved.

So you'll probably have one like that.

Now you added the same number to both sides

because you don't want to change the overall value of the equation.

You want to keep it balanced.

And what this lets you do immediately after

is write the left hand side as a perfect square.

Meaning x plus or minus a number squared.

That's the whole point of adding that number.

Is so that on the left side you can immediately write:

x and (some number here) squared.

What number do you write?

It's this coefficient over 2.

So it's -5/2.

And since it's negative, instead of addition, it's subtraction.

-5/2

squared equals the right hand constant.

Since this is an uglier example it has some fractions involved.

You'll have to get a common denominator in order to combine them.

Or plug them into your calculator, if you're allowed to use a calculator.

A lot of calculators are very good at adding and simplifying fractions.

What you have to do is get a common denominator

which would be 4 in this case.

So...

You have 25/4 and you have 3/2

which can also be written as 6/4.

If you multiply the bottom by 2 to get 4.

You also have to multiply the top by 2 to get 6.

So in the next line

you can rewrite this as (x - 5/2)^2 =

and combine the fractions.

Since the denominator is the same. You keep it as 4.

And the numerators you add. So 6 + 25 gives you 31.

Great! So you've completed the square

and this is in a form that would be very easy for you to solve.

What you want to do is square root both sides.

So on the left side it's a big square root.

On the right side you do a square root of the constant,

but you immediately get positive and negative versions.

So remember when you square root the side that is just a number

you have to put plus and minus.

If you don't you'll only have half the solutions.

You'll only have 1 instead of 2 solutions in the end.

So it's very important. People forget it all the time.

But, you want to square root both sides

what that leaves you on the left

is just x - 5/2.

Because your square root undid the square

and you just have what's left inside the parentheses.

So: x - 5/2 =

plus and minus square root of 31

over square root of 4. Which you can just write as 2.

Then you'll want to use some simple algebra

to move this constant over, so you have x alone.

And your 2 solutions will be:

x = 5/2

plus or minus root 31 over 2.

You can actually combine this into one fraction

which most people would consider simpler.

So you may want to do that.

And your final answer would look like this

x = 5 plus or minus square root 31

as your numerator. All over 2 as your denominator.

So these are your 2 solutions

you got from completing the square.

It may not look like it, but this is 2 solutions

because you have 2 versions.

You have (5 + square root of 31) / 2.

And you have (5 - square root of 31) / 2.

So those are your answers.

OK, say you have an equation that look like this

that starts with a negative x^2.

Or -2x^2.

Where the coefficient of x^2 is a negative number.

Your first step will still always be

to move the constant over to the right-hand side.

So the next line you would have:

-x^2 - 6x = -7

Notice the sign changed.

And then...

you don't want the negative in front of the x^2

before you complete the square.

So you actually will divide every term by a -1

to get rid of it.

Since there actually is a -1 here. You don't see the 1.

but you can divide every term by -1.

Even the right hand side.

What that does is it flips the sign of every term.

So instead of -x^2, you'll have positive x^2.

Which you want.

(positive) 6x

and on the right side, positive 7.

And then your steps from there

will be the same as in problem 1 and 2.

Adding a number to both sides that you get from

dividing this number by 2 and squaring it.

So you would add 9 to both sides.

(6/2)^2. 9 to both sides.

Writing it as a perfect square.

Solving by square rooting both sides.

From then on it would be the same.

So notice this is a lot like

case number 2, example number 2,

where you divide out anything that was in front of x^2.

OK, things that tend to trip people up

about completing the square.

The biggest thing is...

forgetting to put plus and minus in the solution.

So you if you get to the point

where you have an equation that looks like...

this.

When you square root both sides to solve

a lot of people forget to put plus and minus here

on the constant side

and just write the root.

Lots of people forget that.

You don't want to miss the other solution.

There are 2 solutions

and if you don't put the plus and minus

you're only getting the positive solution.

So remember the plus and minus.

A lot of people forget that.

So you just have x - 4 = plus and minus 5. In this case.

Then you would keep solving from there.

So that's the biggest thing people forget in completing the square.

Another thing that trips people up

is sometimes they think

you can complete the square

if there's no x term.

For instance if you had

3x^2 - 121 = 0

if that was your equation

you can't complete the square because you have no x term.

Such as 3x^2 + 10x - 121

If there's no x term there

you have no coefficient to use when adding a number to both sides.

So you can't complete the square if it looks like that.

You'll have to use another method.

So... factoring. Quadratic formula.

Something like that.

So I hope that helped you understand

how to solve by completing the square.

Someone saw your wonderful AdWords ad and clicked it, came to your website, looked at

how beautiful it is and theeeeen…

…puked, hit the back button and left.

Not the most desirable scenario is it?

That's why today I'm going to show you how to reduce your bounce rate.

Hi everyone! My name is Pawel Ogonowski and I'm the Ecommerce Optimization Guy.

Why should you even care about bounce rate?

What's the difference whether it's high or low?

Well first, with lower bounce rate you get a bigger pool of users that can convert.

And that means more sales and revenue.

Second, with lower bounce rate your site should rank higher in Google.

And that means more free traffic.

So what should you do to lower your ecommerce bounce rate?

First, make sure your users know that they're in the right place.

The first thing your users do when they land on your page after clicking an ad or link

is asking this question „Am I in the right place?".

Make sure that your ad copy, imagery and brand feeling is cohesive between ads and landing pages.

If you show a pic of the product in the ad, then show it on the landing page.

If there was a -20% off sale in the ad, then show it on the landing page.

If there was a particular piece of USP, like „free shipping", in the ad, make sure

it stands out on the landing page.

Remember, make sure your users know that they're in the right place.

Second, make your website blazing fast.

According to Google „As page load time goes from one second to five seconds, the probability

of bounce increases by 90%."

And you know what? Google is always right.

So what is the page load time you should aim for?

3 seconds.

Why exactly 3 seconds?

Because according to the data from 35,000+ ecommerce sites collected by Pingdom, after

this tipping point the bounce rate soars.

So off you go to test.pingdom.com Google Page Speed Insights or Google Analytics and

check what is your page load time.

If it is anything more than 3 seconds then go straight to your IT guys and have them

fix that.

Three, tell your users what should they do next.

Never let your users meet any dead ends in your online store where they are not suggested

with a new action they should take.

If the user likes the dress that you are showing her, then show her how to order it with that

wonderful, eye-catching call to action.

But if she doesn't like it, make sure she can quickly find something else that is interesting.

Show other items in your online store that she should check out.

These might be similar dresses.

But these might also be full looks that will grab her attention.

Or products that are currently on sale.

Or those wonderful new arrivals.

Anything that may captivate your users attention and make him or her engage.

Summing it up — if you want to lower ecommerce bounce rate then go with these 3 things first:

One: make sure your users know that they're in the right place.

Two: make your website blazing fast.

Three: tell your users what should they do next.

Make sure these 3 elements are in place and you won't have any problems with high ecommerce

bounce rate.

Hello, Friends! Today, I'm going to teach signs related to grades in the school...

going through the grades.

This is the sign GRADE. It's a "G" handshape -- the thumb and index finger out,

and go against the opposite palm. You see? GRADE. GRADE. Now what are the grades?

We have preschool. P-R-E SCHOOL.

KINDERGARTEN. It's a "K" handshape: KINDERGARTEN.

Now, elementary school and middle school, has grades 1 through 8...

right? So what do you do? You sign FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, and so on...

plus the sign GRADE. For example...

FIRST GRADE.

Again: FIRST -- the finger twists inward. GRADE.

FIRST GRADE. SECOND GRADE. Third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade...

See how the hand twists at the wrist -- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and that

tends to be what's in elementary school, 1st through 5th grade. And then you go

into middle school -- SIXTH, so it's a "6" and it twists inward as well. SEVENTH GRADE,

EIGHTH GRADE. Okay, so again: first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade,

fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade, eighth grade. Okay?

Now, high school is different. In high school, we have words -- you know: freshmen,

soph... etc., that? In high school and in college, they both have these -- it's those

four years, right? All together four years. Now, we don't do "9th" and "10th"; we

substitute it with... we use the non-dominant -- hand keep that still and

take your dominant palm, and put your palm on each of the other fingers. We

don't use the pinky; you start with the ring finger and like this. See the ring

finger is touching the opposite palm? So that is FRESHMAN. FRESHMAN

Freshman. For SOPHOMORE, we move to the middle finger. That middle finger now is

touching the bottom. SOPHOMORE. See that? Sophomore. JUNIOR. JUNIOR. And senior that

thumb is the top -- senior. Again, all together those four years are... in high

school, you enter and you're what? a freshman. 2nd year: sophomore. Third year:

junior. fourth year: senior. That's -- again that's the same for high school

and college: freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Again: freshman, sophomore,

junior, senior.

Okay? So those are the years. We go "through the years" -- we can

sign you "going through the years" like this: "go through the years". If you go

through the years and finish, What do you do? GRADUATE!

The "G" handshape arcs onto the opposite palm: GRADUATE. or GRADUATION.

First white bracelet

Take crystal elastic thread,

choose length accordingly to the size of the wrist + a few centimeters on each side to tie knots

Fix the end of crystal elastic thread with the piece of sticky paper, so the beads will not fall down

G'day, guys.

What's going on?

So, this is where one day usually starts.

In the kitchen here, I have my new lens and camera, which I've been practising with like

crazy, got my computer here with photos on it, and that I've got this, which isn't breakfast,

but it's what I've been putting outside to get birds to come closer for me to photograph.

So, I put it on the ground here, put it on the roof over here, and it brings birds in

close so I can use this camera right here to take photos.

So, today we're going to talk about reflective practice and how you can use it to improve

your English as fast as possible no matter what your level.

How's it going, guys?

Welcome to this episode of Aussie English.

Today, I'm going to chat about the fastest way to improve your English no matter what

your level, guys.

And I'm going to sort of draw an analogy to what I've been battling with recently and photography.

Let's go.

Alright, guys.

So, the topic for today is Reflective Learning, Reflective Learning.

I wonder if you guys have heard about Reflective Learning before.

So, I've been researching this recently.

My dad was the first one to sort of drill this into me quite a bit, and that's because

he was a high school teacher and a lecturer at university for quite a while so he had

a background in teaching.

But I've been applying this recently to photography, as well as a bunch of other things like Portuguese

as well, and I'm learning Portuguese, but photography is what I want to talk about today.

So, Reflective Learning, I learnt about this from Donald Schon.

Okay?

So, he was an American from M.I.T., a social scientist, and he did a lot of research into

Reflective Learning in the 80s and 90s.

So, there are three main kinds of reflective learning.

The very first one is Knowing-in-Action.

So, this is when you do what you already know whilst you're doing it, right?

So, you imagine that you are speaking English with someone, you are using the English you

already know, you are 'Knowing-in-Action', you're using what you know in action.

The second type is Reflection-in-Action, and this is where you are doing that thing like

speaking English, but you reflect, you think about what's going on.

So, maybe you make a mistake and you think, oh, was that the right word?

Was that the right tense?

Was that the right adjective that I should have used?

You're 'Reflecting-in-Action'.

And the third kind and most important kind that I want to dig into a bit more today for

you guys is Reflection-on-Action, Reflection-on-Action.

And this is when you reflect on the action you've done, obviously, after the fact.

So, for instance, if you were speaking English with someone, it's a session where you're

practising your English, maybe you're getting a lesson with someone, maybe you're just having

a conversation with someone, but when you reflect on that later, if you reflect on it

later, that is a Reflection-on-Action.

You're analyzing what you did.

Could you have done a better?

What else could you have done?

What were your mistakes?

Okay?

So, let's get into that a bit more, how it applies to photography for me, and how you

guys can improve your English by reflecting on action.

Let's go.

So, recently, guys, I've been coming to Mulligan's Flat quite a bit and you guys are probably

seen this in my Instagram posts, on YouTube in the videos.

The main reason is that I'm trying to constantly practice the same thing again and again and

again, or I guess, variations of the same thing, right?

So, there are lots of animals here.

There are lots of little birds, lots of kangaroos, wallabies, all kinds of critters and creatures,

and I'm trying to really hone in my photography skills.

So, instead of sort of jumping from one thing to the next all the time and not analysing

what I've done, how I've done it, how well I've gone, I've kept coming to the same place,

I've kept photographing the same things, in the same locations, and I've kept analysing

what I've been doing after the fact, right?

So, these are my practice sessions.

This is where I spend an hour or two walking around, getting a bit of exercise, looking

at the environment, finding the animals, and honing my skills when I take shots of the

animals doing the same things every time that I'm out here.

You know, there'll be a bird on a branch and I'll be thinking about: What angle do I need?

Where's the sun?

What are my settings on my camera?

What is the shutter speed, the aperture, all of these technical things related to the camera

that I really need to work on and improve?

And the trouble I was having at first was that a lot of my photos were out of focus.

The animals were too fast.

The settings weren't correct on the camera.

The photos were overexposed, they were blurred, they were horrible, but I improved a really,

really rapidly because of Reflective Practice, guys.

Okay?

Let's just focus on that for a sec.

Alright, so how have I been applying Reflective Practice to photography?

Obviously, I've been doing number one: I have a certain set of skills in photography that

I already know and when I come out and take photos here, I use those skills.

Knowing-in-Action.

Number two.

I'm reflecting in action.

I'm taking photos, I'm looking at the photos as soon as I've taken them, I'm zooming in,

I'm thinking, with the hell of a done wrong?

Why don't I like this?

How could I improve this?

Is there something wrong with it?

I'm scrutinizing those images and I'm thinking in the moment, I'm reflecting in the moment,

on what I've done and how I could improve that.

But then number three.

I'm reflecting afterwards.

So, I come out here, I do my one, two hours, however long it is, I take a few thousand

photos, I go home, and I sit down, load all the photos onto my computer, and I start going

through them.

And I start looking at the ones that I like.

I sort them out, delete the rest, and then I start scrutinizing the ones that I like

and I think, how could I have improved them?

Or, what I like about them?

What have I done right and what could I do more of in the future?

And if I'm having specific problems like maybe the animal is too blurred, and I'll show you

some of these photos in a second and how I've hopefully improved.

If the animals too blurred, I get on YouTube, I get on Google, and I start searching 'how

to take sharper images', 'I take blurry images, what do I do?'.

So, I start looking at how I can improve on the mistakes that I've been making.

So, once I identify those mistakes and I sort of think about it, I reflect on those errors,

I then plan my next practice session.

I then think about next time I go out into Mulligan's Flat, next time I go out and take

some photos of whatever it is, birds, kangaroos, what thing am I going to focus on and try

and improve upon?

What skills have I just researched?

What skills have I just learnt about in order to implement the next time that I go out?

And that's what I'm doing today.

I'm out here again after spending the morning looking at a whole bunch of photos that I

liked some of, but didn't like most of it, and I'm thinking about, how can I sit down,

how can I practice those, and how can I improve on those mistakes today?

And I'll tell you what, guys, this has really helped me improve at a lightning pace.

You could definitely do this by just coming out here all the time and taking as many photos

as possible, but I think that would take a lot longer.

In fact, you might improve, but you may not ever get to the level that you want to get

to if you're not scrutinising your own work and thinking about how to improve it in depth,

and having that real reflective approach to improvement.

Okay?

So, now let's talk about this in English and how you guys can apply this to improving your

English no matter what level you currently have.

Okay?

We'll go up the top of the mountain.

Let's head up.

I think that was a bad idea.

This hill's really steep, guys.

I'm going to have to wait for like 10 minutes once I get to the top just so that I'm not

out of breath and you guys zone give me a hard time about my cardio abilities.

Beautiful day though. Beautiful day!

I've been walking for like 10 minutes looking for these bloody kangaroos.

First time ever I've been in Mulligan's Flat and I couldn't see kangaroos.

I've come up this hill, come all the way down, these guys are here, the moment I set the

tripod up and move towards it and clicked go, there's dust and they're gone.

Anyway.

I wanted to chat to you guys about applying the Reflective Practice principle, theory,

whatever it is, to your English.

How this is going to help you improve your English no matter what your level is as fast

as possible.

And instead of just giving you a bit of my mind spewed out, I want to try and give you

some actionable...

I want to try...

Are you done?

Good.

I want to try and give you some actionable tips that you guys can apply to your English

learning... whatever the ways that you set it up, okay?

So, you've got a routine, a schedule, maybe you don't even have one of these, but if you

have a routine or schedule, I want you to try and apply these several tips and tricks

to that schedule in order to improve your English.

Okay?

Alright. So, number one.

You need to define a practice session.

Whatever it is, however it is that you're practicing, when you're practicing your English,

I think you need to create a half an hour or maybe a 1-hour period at least once a week

where you are actively practicing your English.

Number two.

During those sessions, you need feedback.

Whether it's internal and it's coming from you when you can work out what it is that

you're doing wrong, or whether it's external and it's coming from someone else, a friend,

a family member, a tutor, a teacher, whoever it is, you need to be getting some kind of

feedback on which you can then practice, you can scrutinize, you can improve upon.

Number three.

You need to go away and practice on the feedback that you've just been given.

What is it that you got wrong and how can you do it correctly next time?

Finally, number four, guys.

You need to take this in mind and use it to organize your next practice session, and it

becomes a cyclical process.

You need to apply this every time you do this practice session and you're going to get results

that just compound.

You're going to improve a lot faster than if you were just winging it, you were just

improvising, every single time.

So, I guess, finishing up.

This is something that I always...

I always get asked when I meet people who've been in Australia for a very long time, and

they say to me, I've been here for nine years and my English hasn't improved.

What am I doing wrong?

And I'll ask them, how are you practising?

Usually, they'll say, I'm not.

Or they'll say, oh, I speak, but I don't study.

Or they will be studying, but they won't be practising the things that they've studied.
