FAC with Us for the Class of 2023! - Duration: 4:07.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

The reason that I decided to be a FAC

was that I didn't know anybody coming to Duke.

And my FAC really made a difference

in easing that transition to college and to Duke

specifically.

I personally loved my FAC my freshman year.

I thought she was so awesome and so sweet.

And I decided, in turn, to apply to be a FAC because I wanted

it to be a way of paying back.

I wanted to meet the next generation of Duke students

and also provide to them the same welcome and sense of home

that I got when I came here.

I really credit the FAC program with creating

community in Brown during O-Week, my first year.

And so one of the reasons that I applied to be a FAC

is so I could bring that community to a next generation

of Brown residents.

One of the most important qualities of being a FAC

is being able to build a community, first and foremost.

A FAC serves as a friend and someone

the first-years can look up to.

As a FAC, you have that responsibility

to change the culture.

And there are things that maybe we don't totally

love about Duke but we can convey in a way

where we're building up Duke and each other.

When you see the FACs on Move-In Day

and you see them representing a lot of different identities,

it makes people feel welcome and comfortable in their new home.

By having FACs who are able to represent

all of those diverse interests and passions,

we're able to have conversations that maybe change

the way we think about things and change the way

that we represent Duke and all of what

is going to come with Duke to our first-year students.

The FAC program, for me, has helped

teach me how to lead a group and connect with people

on an individual level.

Sometimes at Duke, there's this notion that you have to know

everything, but you don't.

Being a FAC teaches you how to utilize the resources

around you, not only to help your FAClets but also yourself.

Whether you're a first-year, sophomore, or junior,

being a part of the FAC program can really

help you branch out of your comfort zone, meet new people,

and interact with peers at Duke that you haven't met before.

One of the things I most appreciate about the FAC group

that came together for Trinity was just the diversity

of thought and of experiences.

Being able to work with people from all different backgrounds,

all different stories, all different ideas, viewpoints,

and interests has made a really positive impact on the way

that I look at the world and just

my deep experience in general.

Being a FAC for one year is great.

You can help mentor your FAClets throughout their first year

experience at Duke.

But what's so great about the FAC program

is that it's something you can be involved in throughout all

of your time at Duke.

If you're on the fence about whether or not

you should apply to be a FAC, just

think about your O-Week experience.

Did you love it?

Or maybe not so much.

Well, by applying, you have the opportunity

to make an impact in the next group of first-years'

experience.

To someone who's considering being a FAC,

the first thing I would say is don't be afraid of Move-In Day.

It was long, and it was sweaty.

But it was honestly one of the most fun experiences I've had.

Seeing people get out of the car being

so excited to come to Duke honestly filled me

with so much positive energy and so much excitement.

The infectious enthusiasm of Orientation Week-- that does

generate just a lot of excitement and energy.

And so you do get to that point where you are super excited.

But you can be a little quieter and still

be a super fantastic, fantabulous FAC.

I think sometimes people think of FACs as just people who

are super extroverted or super peppy

or have loved everything about Duke.

But I think it's really important to keep in mind

that we need all sorts of experiences,

all sorts of personalities to be in the FAC program.

The beauty of the FAC program is that you

can stay true to yourself and showcase who you are,

which is just a representation of Duke itself.

You have something unique to offer to the FAC program,

and we would be thrilled if you decided

to join our awesome family.

US Politics in 60 Seconds - February 4, 2019 - Duration: 1:13.

Hi it's Ben White chief economic correspondent for POLITICO.

Coming to you today from 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan

with your US Politics in just 60 Seconds!

All right.

Let's start the clock!

Well he'll talk about jobs and wages and the economy but mainly it will be about border security

and the wall and perhaps doing an emergency declaration.

Hundred percent. Latest POLITICO poll shows 76% of Americans support higher taxes on the rich.

A lot of support for that.

Absolutely he would.

That's why he's more likely to do the emergency declaration to build the wall rather than

take the blame for another shutdown.

I don't see how he has any other choice.

He's lost moral authority.

He's all over the map on his explanations for this racist yearbook page.

He's got to go.

The question is when.

All right.

That's your US Politics in just 60 Seconds!

I'm Ben White from POLITICO!

US| More snow, thunderstorms expected for Northern California The Sacramento Bee

February 02, 2019 11:38 AM

A winter storm that has been moving across California is showing no signs of slowing down, especially in the mountains, with thunderstorms and even the threat of tornados late Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

More rain and snow is expected Sunday, making driving conditions in the Sierra Nevada hazardous and prompting the National Weather Service to issue flash flood watches in several fire affected areas.

For about an hour around noon, Caltrans closed portions of Interstate 80 due to vehicle spinouts and collisions. The major roadway is now open, though chain restrictions are in effect. The transportation agency also reported an overturned vehicle on Highway 50 by Sierra at Tahoe, though it said traffic was moving in both directions.

Just after 4 p.m., the weather service issued a tornado warning for Butte, Colusa and Glenn counties, which expired without incident.

Heavy snowfall in the mountains will continue through Tuesday, dumping 5 to 10 feet of snow in pass areas along Interstate 80 and Highway 50, said Idamis Del Valle, NWS meteorologist. The highest peaks could hit levels of up to 13 feet.

On Monday, snow levels could drop between 1,000 and 2,000 feet in elevation, the weather service said. For now, snow levels will remain above 3,500 feet through Sunday night, she said.

NWS Reno issued a backcountry avalanche watch in the greater Lake Tahoe area, between Yuba Pass and Ebbetts Pass, through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Heres a look at the Sierra snow reports through this morning. More snow is on the way, with snow accumulations from 5 to 10 FEET expected at pass levels through Tuesday.

The NWS in Sacramento tweeted out Friday that traveling into the Sierra is highly discouraged.

Caltrans against traveling into higher elevations, but said those planning a trip into the mountains should allow for extra travel time and be prepared to get out those chains.

Updated information on chain control areas can be found at .

Chain controls are in place throughout the Sierra Nevada region. Check for real time updates. Travel is not advised, but those planning a trip to the area should allow extra travel time.

The storms so far have dropped .87 inches in Sacramento in the 24 hours ending at 4 p.m., with areas north receiving twice that amount or more in the period – Alder Springs receiving 1.77 inches, while Redding, Red Bluff, Blue Canyon and Paradise are seeing more than 2.4 inches and Konocti on Clear Lake recording 2.97 inches – the weather service reported.

Showers are expected to continue in the Sacramento Valley through Saturday and has the potential for thunderstorms later in the day, Del Valle said, as another band of widespread precipitation will reach the area after 6 p.m.

There could be some brief lulls, but overall the pattern will remain pretty active through Monday in the valley, decreasing shower activity on Tuesday, Del Valle said.

The valley is expected to get 1 to 3 inches of rain through Tuesday, while the foothills are expecting 3 to 7½ inches of rain, Del Valle said.

Areas of light to moderate rain continue to affect much of interior early this morning. A band of heavier precipitation moving inland from the coast will spread across the and areas during the next few hours.

A flash flood watch has also been issued through Monday for burn scar from multiple fires in Northern California.

Residents in the areas of the Camp, Mendocino Complex, Carr, Hirz and Delta fires burned should be on the look out and prepared to evacuate if necessary, according to a .

Flooding could increase debris flow consisting of rock, mud, vegetation and loose materials, the NWS said.

Especially if thunderstorms move into the area, Del Valle said.

Potential for thunderstorms in the Central Valley this afternoon into early evening. When thunder roars, go indoors!

US| Man Is Sh0t D3ad at a Queens Subway Station The New York Times

A man died on a Queens subway platform after he was shot in the head midday on Sunday while quarreling with two men who fled on foot, the police said.

It was unclear whether the shooting occurred on the Manhattan bound 7 train as it was holding in the station, or on the 90th Street Elmhurst Avenue platform.

The police have not identified the victim, who was pronounced dead on the platform and was not carrying identification. Officers were still searching for the gunmen, one of whom police described as a heavyset man wearing bluejeans and a blue jacket.

The three men had been on board a southbound 7 train that pulled into the aboveground station just before 12:45 p.m. The conductor heard several shots, the police said, then saw the victim lying on the platform.

Police officials were still trying to determine the nature of the dispute that led to the shooting. Investigators were examining video from the station, but it was unclear whether it captured the shooting or the suspects, the police said.

A witness wrote in Japanese on Twitter of hearing five to six gunshots and then falling to the floor, fearing the shooting was an act of terror, according to the sites translation.

The train station was closed after the shooting, the police said. Subway officials said trains were running express in both directions.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subway, referred questions to the police.
