It's just amazing.
I drove into a industrial park.
Where there are no signs.
So, actually I don't know where I'm going to.
There is a road
through something
what reminds me a postapocalyptic zombie movie.
But I'm getting closer to some cars, so...
I'm probably right.
Who knows...
Look, there is a unfinished Skoda...
Let's look around.
Damn, where it could be?
I don't see any Mercedes.
I don't see any BMWs.
So, let's ride around here...
Anyway you told me
that this car
was a spontaneous purchase for you, right?
Yes!
It was a spontaneous purchase.
Because, of course
we all know
those advices like:
Don't buy the first ride which you'll see!
Go to look on more cars to compare!
Of course I respect those advices.
And I can say
I also kinda follow them.
But
We've purchased this car...
It arose like
One Saturday in the evening
we sat at computer, working.
And later we placed some small ads...
and after work we were looking on some cars in small ads.
Generally what's available.
Our chosen ones.
Cars that we love.
Those 80s iconic cars.
Because this Mercedes is somehow saved in my memory.
Because it was a really nice car.
And we already had M3 in the garage.
E30.
So I said:
Let's have a look what 190s are available!
With the 16V engine.
And this car just poped up to us
as one of many.
And it made us interested.
Because it was after first owner.
And it looked beautiful.
So we stated:
It would be fine to have a look on it.
So in the next week after this weekend
we called them.
Managed an appointment.
And on Friday
We went there with the money in the pocket.
With the thought that if we'll like it
we'll take it.
And it happened in the end. So...
Actually in less than a week
it was at home
since we first found it in the ad
to taking it home.
So you went there with the intention to buy a 190E.
Exactly as I Say
We discovered it in the small ad
while looking after 190s.
We liked this one.
We called for it.
And this one we picked up.
And was it kinda love at first sight?
Well
I can say that
the love
The love for this car
appeared after we took it home.
And we started to discover it.
Because
This car...
I never...
I have never riden in it.
I have never driven it.
I never knew anybody who has it in my surroundings.
So I had some informations about it.
Those you can find and read.
Generally I'm interested in youngtimers.
So I had some knowledge
What the car is it.
Also thanks to the catalogue
which I keep for 20 years in my archive.
So I knew some technicals
about the car of course.
But there was no comparison.
I have never been in it.
So, actually after we purchased it
it was the time to start discovering it.
What it can do.
How it behaves.
How it rides.
And of course you start looking specifically after the history.
What is also so nice, right?
Because until you buy it
You don't have a reason
to investigate.
Then you buy it.
You start looking for the people
who have it.
And you start to learn.
And then it goes to such a self learning process.
Which I like so much.
However because you have those catalogues which you showed to me.
What is by the way super nostalgic issue for me
because I can remember that from my 8 or 9 years
when grandpa took them from Germany
And I was looking exactly on those old catalogues of Mercedes, Ford...
And I was totally blown away, right?
In that time there were Skoda 120s or 100s.
And if you met something from the West.
It was like...
Just before the revolution.
So it was a holiday.
And this triggered really nice memories.
So I understand that you
actually to this Mercedes
have sort of relation ship?
Since the childood to this type of car, right?
You can say so.
Because as I say
From a guy from Germany
I was supplied with catalogues.
I have a really nice catalogues archive.
Mostly BMWs.
I have some from Mercedes.
Some Jaguars.
I could also find some Fords.
Also Peugeots.
I have thrown away many...
And kept only those which I'm most interested in.
Mercedes and BMWs.
And today on some fairs
I'm trying to
buy those catalogues of models I'm interested in.
Still today.
So my archive still grows :)
And specifically this 2.5litre
2.5-16
What is this car!
And we know one more thing about this car!
If someone wanted!
He can have it.
So...
This handsome guy...
Now ain't talking 'bout Tomas!
Talking about the handsome one behind him!
You can buy him! ( Click the card on the top to learn more! )
I have that catalogue for about 20 years.
So since my childhood
I actually knew
that Mercedes produced 190E
with some 16 valves engine.
That it looks like it looks.
So it was saved in my memory somehow.
And because I'm interested in cars since the childhood
before I learned to read
I looked in my dad's car magazines.
Still a really little one.
I've thrown away fairy tales with pets.
In quite a early age.
And I started to look in car magazines.
And later I started to read in it.
In my 5 or 6 years
when I was able to read a little.
But it was still about the looking.
Looking on pictures!
I can see, that you are exactly the same patient as I am.
There's a lot of us. I don't think I'm kinda special.
I think that us - the car people.
The story is too close.
You start looking at the car pictures in your childhood.
You start to feel it.
In that time - as you said
There were 120s and Jigulis in the streets.
Sometimes a Ford.
And you started to distinguish those cars.
You knew. This is Ford. This is Skoda.
It's is Jiguli, Moskvich, Volga...
You don't see those today, right?
Exactly!
Talking about this, I was such a patient
that I had a spiral notebook.
As I can remember.
Yes.
And from those catalogues
I was cutting those...
those signs of the producers.
Sure!
And you glued it :)
And also those cars.
And I was making my own big catalogue.
Sure! Sure!
And I'm sad that I dont have it any more.
So I'm pretty jealous that you have catalogues from that time.
Because I lost all these...
As I feel this.
You've actualy
sort of
fulfilled a childhood dream, right?
Look!
Yes!
But as I say
I knew that the car existed.
But I wasn't groaning for it. Never.
I can't say
that this car
is my dream.
It's like...
You just have a number of cars
Let's say 10, 20 or 50.
Which you just like.
Which is saved in the memory like
You want to drive them at least for a while.
Maybe one day to have it.
But it's nothing like you simply desire that type of car.
And that's a specific case of this car.
And when there appeared the chance
we just took it...
I don't want to say dream.
But it's like... Checking one of the cars on the imaginary dream cars list.
You checked one on the bucket list.
And for me, this ride is...
It is sort of... getting one of my childhood dream fulfilled.
Even if I am not an extreme fan of Mercedes.
But as I told you in garage
I am simply...
I can remember
that first two cars
which I was able to draw as a little one
were... Escort
and it was this Mercedes.
It was one -ninety Mercedes.
Because it was easy to draw.
Square boxes.
And I can remember I could draw it clearly in my 6.
So yes. Now because of you I am actually fulfilling my childhood dream right now!
Because in that time of course I was watching DTM races.
That gray-silver color.
And I loved it so much.
As it sat on the ground.
Of course those DTM age cars...
Look at my home
I might be able to find VHS cassettes with old TV records
From german TV.
Some cuts of the races.
Seasons - I don't know - 89... 91...
Also in Brno there were DTM races.
I think I could find them home...
So of course... E30 M3
Sierra Cosworth
and 190 Mercedes with the 16 valves engine.
Those are three - let's say - icons.
Exactly!
Which you can remember from this era.
Which you would like to have.
Well, we're just missing that Sierra Cosworth :)
To have the whole trinity.
Will you get one to your garage?
When we'll have a chance
then sure :)
I'm heading there... to Sierra.
In general
I have a positive relationship to Sierra
from my childhood.
In the kindergarten I already said I like Sierra so much.
And when I grow up I'll have one!
I stated it in my 5 or 6... pre school... that I'll have one.
Look! Welcome to the club. It was the same at me.
Just a little difference. I was calling it "Sejra" (slang expression for cheese)
Somehow I couldnt pronounce it
So for me it was called "Sejra".
Of course in this age I didn't know there was a Corworth.
But I just had Sierra... In this time it was the best what you could meet in the streets.
Exactly!
We took this amazing old Mercedes for a ride.
Sure!
For me it was really a fulfilling a dream.
How was it?
When you have bought it
did it have this original color?
When you got it or did you re-painted it?
No! No!
This is the original color. Rauchsilber.
And actually this 2.5 was made in 4 colors.
This one, silver, black and red.
And it's original color.
So as you can see it now
that's how we got it.
We only added those decals.
So it means...
when you first saw it
did it light the fire in your head?
That you'll turn it to Senna or Lauda?
It was one idea.
Because we've bought it in September.
During the winter it was maintained
it wasn't riding in winter.
It was here in the hall.
And during the spring we started planning events to visit.
We were at Legendy.
We went to Veterani na Plazi, where we liked it so much.
So we thought it would be nice
if the car would have something
what could kinda punch the fans' eyes. We want to make it shine... Kinda!
So we stated that it would be nice
as there is an interesting history of the car
of this type.
So we wanted to put it into those colors and...
Of course Senna is the most famous one. He won that race.
Race of the stars.
So we thought:
Everybody has Senna!
Everybody tends to it.
We make Lauda!
Just because the car comes from Austria.
So it met somehow...
So car from Austria. Driver from Austria.
And Senna got a bad luck :)
With all the respect. Yes! :)
We made a tribute to Lauda.
Look, when we rode, people were turning after us.
What are the responses about the car?
From the people.
Can you remember one most emotive situation?
When you rode somewhere and someone went down to the knees?
Look!
In general I can say
that the magic of youngtimers
is hidden in the fact that
noone gets jealous about it.
The price is equal to new Superb or Octavia.
Noone gets jealous.
For most of the people it's just some old car.
And talking about this specific car.
One ninety is even in this 16 valves version kinda stealthy.
So it usually goes this way...
I ride it through the city
looking if someone gets interested.
Or responses when you're jammed, standing by the bus stop.
I have to say that for 99% of people it's just an old Mercedes which the simply overlook.
And when someone turns
you usually say
Aaah! Careful! This one knows!
He knows what's going on.
But it's just few times.
If I had to remember one response.
We stopped at the gas station.
In a parking there were people by a Mercedes.
New E-Class.
They were just talking
having a coffee.
And one of them noticed me on arrival.
Filling the tank.
While I was leaving he could twist his head off.
So I said: Well this man probably...
Either he likes the condition of the car
Maybe he didn't see such a 190 for a long time
Or he knew the type...
Sure!
You indicated that this car
is without any doubts a sleeper.
Stealthy from outside.
But i can drag.
How many times are you in a traffic lights challenge? :)
Now it happened on the way back.
I can say it was a first time.
Really!
I try to drive it somehow gently.
Or I just drag it somewhere alone.
I don't need to drag with others nowadays...
I'm interested in other driver's responses. You know...
If they respond like
Yeah! This is the one which can drag!
Look! It's more like thumbs up.
It happened few times.
Going on the highway and someone is taking over in a common car...
And shows thumb up on me...
It's nice.
I think this is the second thing
beside of the ownership of the car.
You can be proud of the car.
It fulfills you by the feeling you have such a car. Icon.
That you enjoy to drive it.
It is on the other hand nice that the others can appreciate it.
Either on events
or at the gas station, in a parking lot by the store.
That someone lifts his thumb up.
Or comes and asks.
Tells you "You have a nice ride. " Or asks "Where did you get it?"
