Julian Assange Of Wikileaks To Hillary Clinton BLAME YOURSELF For Losing, Not Us.

Julian Assange of Wikileaks has a message for Hillary Clinton.

If she wants to know why she lost, she should look into a mirror.

Hes right, of course.

All he did was confirm what many knew by sharing information.

That used to be the medias job but we all know we cant rely on them anymore.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Assange: Clinton did herself in, not WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said it was Hillary Clintons own words that sunk

her run for the presidency, not WikiLeaks decision to publish them.

What is the allegation here exactly? Assange asked in response to a question in

an interview with the Italian newspaper la Repubblica about whether he had done a hit

job on Clinton.

We published what the Democratic National Committee, John Podesta, Hillary Clintons

campaign manager, and Hillary Clinton herself were saying about their own campaign, which

the American people read and were very interested to read, and assessed the elements and characters,

and then they made a decision, Assange said.

That decision was based on Hillary Clintons own words, her campaign managers own words.

Thats democracy.

In the weeks and months leading up to Election Day, WikiLeaks published private emails by

DNC officials and Podesta that proved damaging the Democrats and Clinton.

Do you think Hillary and Democrats would be complaining if Wikileaks had released information

which was damaging to Trump or any other Republicans?

Of course not.

The US Continues With A Neocon Foreign Policy - Duration: 17:39.

Robbie, your new film series, "A Very Heavy Agenda."

It tells the story of what's happened with our hawkish foreign policy over these last

16 years or so, even a little before that.

Give us a quick primer on the overall take of the film.

It's a three-part documentary series that pretty much chronologically goes over what

kind of damage mostly the neoconservatives were doing, starting with the Bush administration,

and then going all the way until the present.

Most of the movie covers the eight years of Obama, and how the neocons crept in during

his administration and influenced it in terms of the Ukraine policy, the Syrian policy,

our intervention in Libya.

Pretty much every military intervention that happened while Obama was in office was in

some way either egged on or influenced by the neocons, some of them actually inside

of his own administration.

One of the things that you discuss in the film is the Project for a New American Century,

PNAC.

That is a story that a lot of Americans either didn't pay attention to during the Clinton

administration and the Bush administration, or they simply didn't hear about it.

Tell us a little bit about PNAC and how they helped to influence basically our horrible

foreign policy for the last couple of decades.

When most people think of neoconservative foreign policy, the names the American Enterprise

Institute, the Hudson Institute, some of these more traditional think tanks in D.C. take

top billing, but Project for the New American Century in a lot of ways was actually the

most influential neoconservative institution over the Bush administration.

In fact, I think over 15 members of PNAC actually went directly into the Bush White House immediately

when he got into office.

You can look at letters they were writing, essentially lobbying presidents ever since

Bill Clinton, to get us into foreign interventions.

They wrote a letter to Bill Clinton in 1998 asking him to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

It was signed by people like Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, Francis Fukuyama, many others who

ended up going directly into the Bush administration.

What they've been doing the whole time is essentially working as an outside, agitating

force to get whatever administration is currently in power to engage in some new military conflict.

I think probably the thing that would interest people the most about PNAC is, in 2000 they

actually wrote a document called Rebuilding America's Defenses, which lays out the post

9/11 Bush world.

In that document, they say that to accomplish this buildup of our military in this short

time frame that we'd like, it would require an event, something resembling a new Pearl

Harbor, a catalyzing event like a new Pearl Harbor.

Which of course a year later 9/11 happened and it allowed them to do all the things that

they laid out in this document.

If you look today, go online and you try to find the Project for a New American Century,

at least on the surface it appears that this group has disappeared or they disbanded.

They no longer exist online.

Are they still around?

Are they still out there coordinating with each other, or have they really disbanded

and gone their separate ways?

No, they're definitely still out there.

I describe it to people like what Blackwater did.

If you search for Blackwater now on the Internet, you won't find their name anywhere because

they've changed their name several times since all the controversies happened.

It's a similar thing to Project for the New American Century.

Somewhere around the time of 2007, 2008 they decided to close down the Project for the

New American Century and essentially reopen it under a new name.

The intentions behind this reopening was not only a rebranding to make people forget what

kind of reputation the neocons had.

They had such a bad reputation that it was in a very simple way a rebranding effort.

I think more importantly, what they were trying to do, just like they tried to do during the

Clinton administration, is neoconservatives realized that partisanship is actually unimportant.

What's more important is trying to reach across the aisle and influence Democrats, essentially

during the Obama administration, to go along with sort of this Bush foreign policy, and

that's what they did.

I would describe the foreign policy initiative, which is their rebranded think tank, as PNAC

2.0.

They did that as soon as Obama got into office, they egged him on for roughly the first four

years of his presidency, and were cheering on many of Obama's foreign policy actions

that could arguably could be described as neocon.

You talk a lot about Kagan in the films.

Lay out his story.

Why should the voters be concerned about a guy like Kagan throwing support behind Hillary

Clinton?

I think the main reason is that he was the co-founder of the Project for the New American

Century, which of course is this very influential neoconservative think tank, but why I think

Kagan is particularly dangerous is because he's really good at appealing to liberalism.

When you see this new op-ed that he's writing, which is essentially an anti-Trump screed

saying that the GOP is making a huge mistake by letting someone like Trump take over.

Whether you agree with him or not on that, I'm sure many liberals would agree with that,

it's very fascinating to watch the way he's characterizing the situation.

He calls right Republicans Islamophobes, bigots, and I would agree with him on that, but this

is language that usually liberals and people on the left wing use.

I think it gives an interesting insight into what I was just talking about, that partisanship

to the neoconservatives isn't as important as getting their foreign policy message across.

Hillary Clinton apparently is someone who is going to deliver that message, and is more

in line with the neoconservative ideology than Obama even.

They've actually said this.

Other neoconservatives are saying now that they would have rather had Hillary Clinton

as president in 2008 because she is so in line with the way that they think.

Is Kagan still in the picture?

Does he still have influence over foreign policy today?

I think inside the actual U.S. government, I'm not sure how much influence he still has

today.

I think very few people realize that his wife, Victoria Nuland, has an incredible amount

of influence inside the Obama administration.

Robert Kagan was actually appointed a position in the State Department by Hillary Clinton

when she was appointed Secretary of State, so not only does he have an influential ... Arguably,

we don't really know what his direct influence is, but his wife has pretty much been in charge

of the Eastern European NATO policies for the last four years in the State Department.

Arguably she has had a role to play in the Ukraine situation that erupted a couple of

years back.

I think that that's what people should be looking at, is Victoria Nuland and Robert

Kagan as this power couple that have inserted themselves into U.S. government policy making

and foreign policy making.

You just mentioned Ukraine, and that's another point I want to get to that you discuss in

your films, is the media's role in all of this.

A couple years ago, Liz Wahl from RT America decided on air she was going to announce her

resignation, saying she could not work for this Russian propaganda network.

I was, I guess you could call lucky.

Mike Papantonio was filling in for Tom Hartman.

We were in the studio when that happened.

There was just this sense of shock among everybody there and more of a, 'What the hell are

you talking about?' than a, 'Right on, do the right thing.'

Your sister, Abby Martin was a host on RT for a very long time.

Liz wanted us to believe that there is this big Russian conspiracy.

They're trying to influence the media.

I haven't seen that.

Have you?

No.

Russia Today has put out some stuff that is maybe a little bit Russian leaning.

It's understandable, it's a Russian owned television channel.

Tom's program, Abby's program were very much editorial content.

It was all their own opinions, bringing to the table, bringing guests on.

I think that criticism can only really be leveled at the news cycle content they do.

Even still, compared to the Western media, it's completely dwarfed by the slant and the

obvious propaganda that the Western media is putting out, CNN, MSNBC even, of course

Fox News.

Yeah, it was completely ridiculous for Liz Wahl to say that she can no longer work for

a Putin ... What did she call it?

"A network that whitewashes the actions of Vladimir Putin."

It's straight out of a neocon script.

Then of course it was revealed later, and I don't know if Max Blumenthal, Arania Khalek,

Rania sorry, were the ones who actually discovered that.

The Foreign Policy Initiative, which is Project for the New American Century 2.0, announced

on Twitter, 'Something big is about to happen on RT in about 20 minutes,' and that was

Liz Wahl's resignation.

For some reason or another, this neoconservative think tank wanted to put out the message that

they were trying to launch this, I would describe it almost like an information war against

Russia.

Not even just against the network, it was something I think deeper than that for them.

As you mentioned in the films, they need an enemy.

You have to have this enemy to unite the public in your quest for war, and Russia, God, since

the Cold War for decades now, that's always been our go to enemy.

'Oh, something's bad.

Russia did something that we ... We do the same thing elsewhere, but they're doing it,

so now we all have to be against it.

Americans unite.

We have to be ready to go to war with Putin.'

It's ridiculous when you consider some of the real foreign policy crises that we have

in this world right now.

We have areas that are being decimated by climate change, horrible dictators out there,

but the U.S. wants to be the police.

We want to say that you have to do exactly what we do, exactly what we say.

You have to model yourselves after the United States, and we see how well that worked in

Iraq, rather than offering help.

I think that's the big problem, is that we've turned from a helpful nation into a war-hungry

nation.

What's interesting is there seems to be a weird neocon ... I would call it almost neocon

panic over the Trump presidency.

What's also interesting is I see a problem now, is a lot of Trump supporters are starting

to use the term neocon because they see that neocons are actually so upset over Trump,

and they're starting to use it.

I always get worried when a vitriolic, blowhard group of people starts using a valid term

like that, because there's always a danger of a word like that becoming meaningless and

becoming weaponized in the election cycle.

Robbie, film series is A Very Heavy Agenda.

10 Surprising Predictions For 2017 : You Will Be Shocked! - Duration: 10:21.

10 Terrifying Predictions For 2017.

2016 was a bad year.

Beloved celebrities died, terrorists massacred dozens, Aleppo was devastated, Yemen went

to Hell, North Korea detonated two nukes, and the US was divided by the nastiest election

in living memory.

Well, we've got some bad news: 2017 could be even worse.

Here's how: 10.

Italy's Banking System Collapses.

In a list of "boring-sounding things you should be worried about," an Italian banking

crisis would be number one.

For years, Italy's lenders have been chucking money at people like 2008 never happened.

Now, experts thinks those banks could finally fall.

Italy is the world's eighth largest economy.

It's also a Eurozone country, so it could bring the whole EU crashing down.

The Greek debt crisis nearly collapsed the Euro, and Greece barely edges into the top

50 global economies.

Italy going down would be like sticking a block of Semtex under the Euro and pressing

the button marked "Kaboom."

As a single entity, the EU has an economy larger than China.

If it goes, the effects on the world would be enormous.

US consumers would be hurting faster than you can say "global depression."

09.

The US And China Engage In A Trade War.

US president-elect Trump has made no bones about his plans regarding China.

He wants to slap tariffs on Chinese goods and square off against Beijing over trade.

While Beijing may back down, things could go the other way.

The US and China could wind up embroiled in a painful trade war.

This would be . . . interesting, to say the least.

China and the US trade nearly $600 billion worth of goods.

While China imports more from the US than vise-versa, the goods the US imports are harder

to source elsewhere.

So China would face bigger immediate problems, but US consumers would find themselves paying

an enormous "tax" on consumer electronics, a worrying proposition in the digital age.

Then there's the fact that China imports, assembles, and then reexports goods all over

Asia.

A damaging trade war would spill over onto Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan and mess things

up for millions.

08.

The Taliban Take Over Afghanistan (Again).

Remember the Taliban?

Like an unwanted Marvel sequel, the fanatical Islamist group has returned with an even bigger

budget.

Only instead of targeting the summer schedules, they're on the verge of overrunning all

of Afghanistan.

Nearly 150 of Afghanistan's 400 districts are already totally or partially under Taliban

control.

There's fighting in 50 more.

These are the highest numbers since 2001 and are being fueled by soaring Afghan military

and police defections.

In a manner eerily reminiscent of ISIS's 2014 rampage across Iraq and Syria, the Taliban

are recruiting their own disaffected "enemies" en masse, gaining piles of new equipment in

the process.

Currently, the US has 10,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan, but they're making very

little difference.

Unless the tide turns, it's almost certain that 2017 will be the year the Taliban retake

Afghanistan, as though that whole War on Terror thing never even happened.

07.

Marine Le Pen Is Elected President Of France.

Marine Le Pen's Front National party is currently leading in polls for France's

2017 elections.

That's not good.

Front National is a party so far right that they make General Franco look like a social

justice warrior.

The party's founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, has repeatedly denied the Holocaust.

His earliest members were French collaborators from World War II.

He used to publish Nazi songs.

As for the charge that his party is "fascist," in 2012, his daughter, Marine, sued a socialist

politician who described Front National that way.

A French court ruled that "fascist" was a literal description of their politics.

If Le Pen becomes leader of France, it would be like Brexit on steroids.

Not only would a major European country be ruled by a neo-Nazi, but Le Pen has promised

to yank France out of the European Union.

The result—a total collapse of the EU and economic shock waves that will rock the world.

06.

North Korea Goes Full Nuclear.

North Korea is the gag nation.

While Iranian nukes worry us, North Korea acts as a punchline in Seth Rogen movies.

In truth, we may be underestimating the DPRK.

2017 could see their nuclear capability go from "scary background noise" to "terrifying

threat."

In 2016, Pyongyang carried out two nuclear tests, bringing its grand total to five.

No other nation in history has made it to five tests without perfecting a device it

can attach to a missile.

Kim has made ramping up rocket research a priority.

Crazy as it sounds, North Korea might be closer to a working, ready-to-deploy nuclear missile

than we realize.

Conservative estimates put mid-2018 as the point that North Korea reaches full nuclear

capability, but there's a chance it could be earlier.

Kim already has 20 nukes, a fleet of missiles, and a fragile ego.

For the pudgy tyrant, entering the nuclear club early would be worth any number of his

people starving.

05.

ISIS Unleashes Carnage In Europe.

In the 13 months since November 2015, ISIS and IS-inspired terrorists have killed over

260 innocent people in Europe and more if you include attacks in Turkey.

(Turkey sits in both Europe and Asia.)

Horrific as this is, it could merely be a taster of what is to come.

With ISIS's Iraq and Syria strongholds collapsing, Western jihadists are being sent back home

by the thousands, all with only one goal: to cause maximum casualties to civilians.

According to Europol, these returning fighters have been briefed to try to launch attacks

in European countries, with France, Germany, and Britain the top targets.

Scarily, it's thought that these attacks may well involve weapons of mass destruction

like sarin and anthrax.

Although many will be foiled, it would just take one successful attack to cause untold

casualties.

04.

A Crippling Cyber Attack.

On December 23, 2015, a group of hackers infiltrated and disabled three major power stations in

Western Ukraine, leaving 230,000 homes without power in the middle of a freezing winter.

It was the first major cyber attack on a power grid in history.

Scarily, far from being soft targets, those Ukrainian power stations had better cyber

protection than most US ones.

Foreign policy experts have been warning about a crippling cyber attack on vital US infrastructure

for years, but after the Ukrainian attack, those warnings have become deadly serious.

In Ukraine, power was restored after six hours by using manual backups—which US substations

lack.

If a similar attack hit the US, the power could stay out for months on end.

Such attacks are increasing in number.

In mid-2015, France's TV5 was almost destroyed by Russian hackers.

In winter 2016, Ukraine's power grid was hit again.

It may only be a matter of time before the US is targeted.

03.

Genocide In Africa And Asia.

Right now, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria are vast killing zones.

Parts of Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are engulfed in violence, and people are still

dying in Ukraine, Mexico, and Somalia.

To this dispiriting list, 2017 may add two more countries: Myanmar (aka Burma) and the

Central African Republic (CAR).

The CAR is an ethnically divided, failing state with armed gangs roaming its countryside

and has been at boiling point for the last two years.

Observers are worried it will spill over into ethnic violence, if not outright genocide,

any day.

Myanmar, on the other hand, was meant to be a success story.

After the country transitioned to democracy after 60 years of dictatorship, it was supposed

to become a beacon of the free world.

Instead, security forces began destroying villages belonging to the Rohingya minority

and ethnically cleansing their populations.

Frighteningly, all the indicators for a potential genocide to unfold in 2017 are already in

place.

02.

A Major War.

Is 2016 the new 1913?

There are signs out there that major powers could be sucked into horrifying collisions

if things don't immediately change course.

Depending on those involved, this war could be anywhere on the scale from "locally devastating"

to "World War III."

China is one potential worry.

In recent weeks, China and the US have been squaring off over both the South China Sea

and Taiwan.

While China would be insane to directly engage the US in a war, there's nothing to stop

them from attacking minor US allies.

This could then suck in the US and NATO, much as the assassination of one middle-aged dude

in 1913 wound up sending the entire world to war.

Then there's Russia.

One former NATO deputy commander has already predicted that Moscow will annex the Baltic

states in 2017, leaving the US and EU treaty-bound to protect them.

Or maybe the recent assassination of a Russian diplomat in Turkey will bring Ankara and Moscow

toe-to-toe, a conflict that, once again, the US would be treaty-bound to get involved in.

01.

A US Insurgency.

It sounds ridiculous.

The idea that a group in the United States would arm itself and begin a violent insurgency

sounds like something from a dystopian sci-fi story.

But it's scarily plausible.

US politics are more polarized than ever.

Pew Research shows that Americans no longer trust their countrymen from the other side

of the political spectrum.

Extreme left and right groups are stirring their followers into a violent frenzy on social

media, everyone thinks the system is rigged against their group, and both sides are arming

themselves.

Throw in a super-divisive election and a president many are convinced is illegitimate, and you've

got the stage set for another civil war.

We're not saying this will definitely happen in 2017 or even at all.

Most likely, none of this will come to pass, and we'll look extremely foolish.

But the US right now is a divided, angry, and worried place.

And unless someone works to break this cycle, it could lead down a very dark path indeed.

10 Most Beautiful National Parks In The US.

The United States of America is naturally blessed with wide-spread parks which are renowned

all over the world.

So here's presenting to you the most beautiful national parks in the country.

1: Yosemite National Park in California.

This National Park is spread wide across an area of 1,189 square miles and has earned

a spot in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Park is annually visited by over 3.7 million visitors from all over the world who gather

to see the many beautiful lakes, pond, streams and waterfalls and of course the natural wilderness

which grasps you into its tempting profound There are also over 13 camping grounds in

the park which are facilitated with tents, recreational vehicles, horse and facilities

for group camping.

Yosemite National Park is heaven on earth for those who love hiking and camping.

2: The Grand Canyon in Arizona.

When we speak of something big and beautiful in nature, then we have to mention about the

Grand Canyon.

The world famous gorge which is a mile deep and 18 miles Many photographers have attempted

to capture the beauty of this great natural beauty, but it is a daunting task to capture

the entire valley.

However, nothing matches the sheer beauty when you watch the canyon for yourself.

You can simply stand at the edge and stare deep into the Colorado River lying way below.

The river has cut across the Canyon revealing its many underneath layers which give us an

idea as to how old the canyon truly is.

The oldest of all rocks is pink and white granite which dates back to 1.8 billion years.

The Canyon is visited by about five million people every year.

You can either stare the river from high above or the canyon from down below by rafting through

the river.

The most priceless experience is when you sleep beside the Riverside and stare at the

stars above, the cold breeze will be a thousand times better than your cozy beads and expensive ACs.

3: Crystal Cove State Park in California.

Yet another blessing of nature in California in this 2400 acres widespread park which also

has 2 miles long beach.

You can enjoy the view of the sea and then ride through the park by renting a cottage

sea facing and then a jeep to go deep into the forest.

The district of Crystal Clove was built in late 30's and 40's with beautiful cottages

and beachfront restaurants until then it was a completely deserted and natural habitat

for many animals.

Even today, if you are lucky enough, you can spot a few.

This location is perfect for a family get together or a quick, adventurous trip with

friends.

4: New York's Central Park.

And Of course, even the most beautiful national parks in the US cannot beat our beautiful

Central Park.

At all seasons it is our meet and greet Here you get to meet new people and talk to strangers

who would otherwise be running around the make money or career.

The park changes its colors as per the season.

During summers the pond is used for paddling while the same pond freezes during winters

and is used for ice skating.

The park is spread across 3.41 sq kms and this is what breathes life into the concrete

jungle.

You can enjoy the best view of the Central Park by renting a cycle.

5: Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas.

Home to Golden Eagles, this national park offers about 80 miles of trails for a rich

hiking experience.

The park also has Guadalupe Peak which is the highest point in Texas and gives you the

best view of the state.

For hiking lovers, this park gives you enough challenge and adventure to remember for a

lifetime.

Visitors can also visit the information center at the Pine Springs which gives you a detailed

info on the park.

6: Hawai'i Volcanoes in Hawaii.

One of the world's most active volcanic spot shows you exactly how land is formed.

The two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, attract tourists from all around the

world, but no one dares get close.

This park stretches from the south coastline fringe of Hilo to Mauna Loa which is a daring

13,677 ft summit.

This is also the home of Pele, nope not the football player, but the fire goddess of Hawaii.

The yellow burning lava flows for another 12 miles east till the end of Chain of Craters

Road.

Thanks to the active volcano, about 500 acres of rich fertile new land have been added to

the city.

7: Big Bend National Park.

Yet another Texan park, but sadly not a much popular one.

The park is located at Rio Grande and is spread over 800 thousand acres. The park has a line

of deep cliffs that are as deep as 1000 feet.

The altitudes in the Park range from anywhere between 1,870 feet and 7,875 feet.

The park also has the valley that separates the US and Mexico.

The unappreciated park gets only 300-350 thousand visitors annually.

The park is also filled with natural biodiversity.

8: Denali in Alaska.

This is the best park to explore the wildlife and subarctic wilderness in its original setting.

Only one road has been constructed which too is not allowed for cars beyond the 15th From

here onwards everyone has to board the shuttle bus.

The 20,320 ft Mount McKinley which is North America's tallest mountain is located at

this park.

Keep your eyes open and do not miss the 'big five' found in the park, namely the Moose,

Caribou, Sheep, Wolf and the cinnamon color Toklat Grizzlies.

Finally, when you have enjoyed watching enough of wilderness, you are welcomed by the Wonder

Lake, soothing, still and clear.

9: Olympic in Washington.

Since hundreds of years, the park's mountain, rain forests, and coastline have remained

untouched and remain in their original form.

The star in the park, however, is Mount Olympus which is named after the British trader who

was so amazed by the view of the sunset that he was sure that this is where the gods live.

This single park has snow-capped mountains, rivers, waterfalls, meadows and trout filled

lakes.

The best view of the park can be seen from the hurricane ridge which is 5,200 feet high.

10: The Arches of Utah.

Visiting this park might seem familiar to you.

This is because of the more than 2000 sandstone arches which have been featured in popular

Hollywood movies like Indiana Jones and Thelma & Louise.

The park is known for these natural arches, the best of which is the iconic red rock structure

which looks similar to the setting sun.

The towers, bridges, balanced rocks and desert sculpture garden add beauty to the already

stunning park.

NSA Whistleblower Reveals U.S. Torture Horrors - Duration: 9:57.

Cora, you've got a fantastic new article out on the Intercept.com, "The Secret NSA Diary

of an Abu Ghraib Interrogator".

The article focuses mainly on Eric Fair.

Tell us who Eric Fair is.

Eric Fair is a former US interrogator.

He worked in Iraq for a military contractor, CACI, around 2003, 2004.

He subsequently went public with concerns about the interrogations that he had conducted

and those that he had seen that he believed amounted to torture.

He wrote a book, a memoir of his time in Iraq and at Abu Ghraib specifically that was called

"Consequence".

That was published last month.

It's a great book, really moving, really upsetting memoir detailing the way that he and other

people had treated Iraqi prisoners.

He has become something of a whistle blower on torture issues.

When his book came out, what were some of the new kind of revelations, I guess, that

we learned beyond what we had already known had happened in places like Abu Ghraib?

I think the point of his book was that, as he put it in another op-ed, that Abu Ghraib

was portrayed by the military and by defenders of the sort of system of the way that prisoners

were ... The US detention system in Iraq and Afghanistan and Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib was

portrayed as this anomaly, these bad apples that went too far.

His point in "Consequence" was that Abu Ghraib was not the exception, it was not an

isolated incident in a well run detention system.

He felt that systematically throughout the operations that he witnessed and was part

of, there was a blatant disregard for the rights and even just the humanity of the Iraqis

that they were dealing with.

I think what was really interesting in "Consequence" for me was that he talks also about the ... You

really understand the sort of slapdash way that the interrogations were being run at

the time.

He describes signing up to work for this contractor and just what a mess it was.

They didn't have the right weapons, they didn't have the right security clearance.

Security clearances were being handed out left and right.

People were misrepresenting their experience.

Nobody actually knew anything about Iraq or about interrogations or about intelligence.

He talks a lot about people that he knew for a fact were misrepresenting their experience

and he would watch them climb through the ranks in Iraq.

That was a really interesting aspect of the book.

Then additionally he writes very movingly and very forthrightly about the impact that

the US presence had in Iraq and the way in which people were being treated.

It's very interesting because some of these issues that you're talking about here, I remember

that was back in the early days of Air America and Ring of Fire.

Doing research and reading through these stories as they broke, a lot of the Abu Ghraib stuff,

as you mentioned, was trying to be pinned on these few people, the people that you saw

in the photographs.

Names escape me at the moment, but it was their fault.

They did it.

This wasn't systemic.

This wasn't anything that they were taught to do or told to do or authorized to do.

It was just a couple people who acted out.

They were going to handle it, don't worry about it.

We don't torture.

Then further along the lines too, the issue of military equipment and security clearances.

Those were things that we discussed back on Air America Radio back then that really got

no traction at all beyond the very progressive media.

They weren't covered in the corporate media nearly at all to my recollection during the

time.

It is interesting now to see somebody who was there, Eric Fair, to come out and substantiate

what we had been talking about a decade ago.

It is a little bit vindicating for those of us who have been covering it that long, but

at the same time it's also terrifying because we look at this and we say, 'Well now we

know that this happened.

Not only did it happen, it happened to a far greater extent than what we even talked about

I think, just stepping back for a minute, I think that it's interesting the fact that

Fair's book is coming out right now when the country is still, we're still having this

argument about the efficacy of torture.

As you said, we have Donald Trump out there saying that he'd bring back torture.

He doesn't even use the euphemism, he doesn't even call it enhanced interrogation techniques.

He's right up there saying, 'Yeah, I'll torture people', which is just astounding.

Also, we just had a slightly less hysterical, slightly more nuanced but I think just as

dangerous argument about this over the Senate Intelligence Committee to report on the CIA's

detention and rendition program, which was completed in late 2014 and there was then

a long declassification fight about it.

The CIA is still arguing that it misrepresents what they did.

It won't be fully declassified.

A court just ruled last week that the full report, which is 6,000 pages, it's been released

only in a very heavily redacted summary, can't be, at least for now, can't be declassified

in full.

We're still dealing with these things.

There's still a historical record that is classified.

The Senate report did sort of bring all this up again, this issue of people trying to argue

over the efficacy of torture when it's very clear that it doesn't work.

Whether or not it works should be beside the point.

I think that we're not done with this issue, unfortunately, even more than a decade on.

A lot of the problem has to do with some of these Republican holdovers that are still

in the Senate, still in the House, that think that it's perfectly fine to use these torture

methods.

I'm fairly certain that with the exception of Rand Paul everyone on those early Republican

debate stages was all behind what Trump had to say about torture.

Trump may have been the most blunt in what he said, but if you read the coded language

of everybody else they still believe the same thing.

It's not like Trump is proposing any kind of new Republican idea here.

They all like it for the most part, he's just the one that's not afraid to come out and

say it.

That's a lot of the reason the Republican base clamors around this guy, is because they

think he's a straight shooter, when really he's just saying what the Republican party

has always brought us.

Final question here.

What do we know today about these policies?

Do we have any suggestion that these have continued or have we ended this, or do we

know?

I mean certainly on paper we've ended them.

There has been a return to, officially when Obama came into office, but even predating

Obama.

During the Bush administration there was a pullback of the interrogation techniques that

were allowed to what's in the Army field manual.

Many people still argue that what's in the Army field manual could be argued as contrary

to some of the techniques authorized there like sleep deprivation and isolation could

still amount to torture in certain circumstances.

There's still argument about that, about what's qualified.

I think a big issue now is that we are increasingly turning prisoners over to the Iraqi government,

to the Afghan government.

There's a lot of argument right now about if US is taking prisoners in the fight against

ISIS in Iraq for example, who are those people going to and what assurances do we have that

they are not going to be tortured by a partner government.

That's still a huge issue and a really thorny one.

Then of course the Obama Administration extensively has a preference for capturing suspected terrorists,

but as we know, in fact they've chosen to kill most suspected terrorists that they're

going after.

We have the targeted killing campaign, the drone war and in Afghanistan high value targeting,

which means that people aren't being taken prisoner at all.

They're being killed.

Cora Currier, writing for The Intercept, keep up the great work.

Pleasure speaking with you today.

Thank you very much.

Thanks so much.
