Welcome to teatime with Miki and Aarin.
Today we're discussing BTS's appearance at the
Billboard Music Awards
Let's start from the beginning!
So, the magenta carpet...
Not the RED carpet, but basically.
From the minute that they stepped out of the car,
like...they took over the place.
Let's talk about their looks.
Oh my gosh.
Now, Vogue magazine put an article about
best-dressed boy-band.
Sorry.
Best-dressed artist, period.
Come on. For real.
I think they took some risks,
especially like Taehyung had his pinstriped [jacket] with the polka dots
J-Hope had...I love J-Hope's shoes!
I thought each of their looks fit their personality.
Yeah.
Even, I mean, Rap Monster--
We have a photo in front of us right now.
He had pretty plain...it was just like a white T-shirt
with a black jacket.
Jungkook obviously went like classic,
black and white, the skinny black tie.
Jin was black on black and so was Suga,
Their looks were so different, again,
like you said, they fit their personalities.
Jimin, kind of similar to Rapmon,
Sorry...
Fangirling over outfits...
Whoever styled them...
and I don't know if they have any input
into what they wear, but good job, whoever picked it out.
Fantastic.
Two thumbs up.
Five thumbs up.
Even their hair. It was all--
I mean, nobody has crazy colors right now.
But...
(♥.♥) (♥.♥)
So, like, who was not screaming the whole time...
Every time they were on.
Every time.
I was like, glued. Watching the broadcast.
And every time it like panned past them
in the audience even
I was like WAAAHHHH!!!
Even though it's in the background, I was like
"I see them!"
Fangirling, down.
So.
Yes!
The actual ceremony
I don't watch awards shows.
Never.
I think this is the first time watching a Billboard.
Yeah.
Music Award, for me.
I was like "Oh...this is what happens. OK."
This was my only motivation, really,
to watch an awards show.
Social media
Uh huh
Like, just blew up.
After--even during their
even during their appearance.
All I was doing was being on social media
I was on different apps.
that like, like Amino was one of them.
Twitter, constantly, like "Who are these guys?"
But I was just keeping up with all of us fans
to be part of that
because we're all like so excited.
we're posting, like "Oh my god did you see like 2 seconds they were on TV!"
And I'm like "I KNOW!"
Yeah, it was just so nice
and like we--I knew they were gonna win
because they were posting like how many votes
which was AMAZING.
Like, landslide.
We did amazing, guys.
Wow.
Like...[claps]
This is to all A.R.M.Y.'s
Power of K-pop fandom...
Not hating on Justin Bieber,
but apparently he's been winning the Social Artist award since 2011.
I don't follow him on social media at all, so...
and I'm just trying to not be offensive, but
BTS broke that [streak]. WOO!
Because he was the consecutive--since 2011--and then 2017.
See, I didn't even know that.
Yeah. People were posting that.
People were like, Justin Bieber, Justin Bieber, then like BTS!
YES!
They deserve it though, because really, the--
It was like 300 million (votes) or something.
Yeah.
It was just crazy.
Well I know a lot of people were like,
"Oh they just had so many fans that--"
But YEAH!
They do have a lot of fans who are voting for them.
And they have a lot of people who love them
and not only that, but
the fact is, they're so active
on social media.
And
I think that it really serves as a way for them to
connect to their fans
and they're really good at that.
They want to include their fans
not only just like in concerts
at kind of arms-length.
But right here.
They all, each member participates in that
and they really do make an effort to do that frequently.
I think that they deserve it.
They don't seem so far away.
By doing so, I feel like all of their fans feel more closer.
And that's part of what makes you just absolutely
fall for them
is, their personality comes through so much more in that
I mean, come on, every time somebody was getting
an award, they were standing up and clapping.
standing up, standing ovation.
I mean in Korea that's what they do, but
They're so respectful.
So respectful and they were just humble and like
Rapmon's speech, I mean
I think I was tearing up.
I cried.
You straight up cried.
No shame, I cried!
I was like "Oh my gosh, I'm so proud!"
I know he was very nervous
because it kind of falls on him to, you know
be the spokesperson for BTS.
He did such an incredible job and he was
was so respectful and humble and really portrayed
--It was the perfect speech.
like, what they're all about.
And the first word out of his mouth was A.R.M.Y.
And I just love that.
They're so sweet, they're ALL so humble.
It was such a great moment
to see them honored like that.
Obviously, I was secretly hoping they were going to perform.
I knew they weren't going to, but somehow there was
like this tiny, itsy-bitsy hope that maybe
they would surprise us with a performance.
It didn't happen, but...
Who was it?
Drake.
Drake was performing with the water fountains
on the circular stage in the middle of the thing,
whatever it was.
And I think there were even flames.
I was like, "BTS would look so good on that stage!"
And it's unrealistic to expect that.
This is not, you know.
But still they would have done amazing
and blown everybody else away.
I, yeah.
Maybe next time! Maybe next time.
Yeah.
I mean, and I'm so glad that they're becoming
more and more successful.
More and more people--I mean after
this people are looking them up,
I'm sure so many people went to YouTube and watched
their stuff.
It's great to see them getting that exposure
and I know that this means they'll have even more
success in the future, especially
as they're gaining more fans.
And I know a lot of people may have seen them--
I kept seeing on Twitter, like, "who's the guy on the left?"
or "Who's this guy?" you know.
"Third guy on the left" was Jin.
But even if somebody like just goes
"Oh he's cute" and then searches
and actually gets into their music
and hears how good they are
and what they're all about...
then, you know, even if a fan is gained that way
I think that still, it still
shows like how appealing they are
And I don't think they realize
in America, how small of an Asian musicians and artists
are representative, they're very few.
To see the general population have a little bit
more exposure,
I think that that opens the door
Yeah.
to prompt people to maybe like, want to educate themselves.
and be interested in other cultures.
No matter how it begins,
even if your introduction is
one sighting of a K-pop group
at a music awards show,
you know, that can be just a start.
Hopefully that really does like perk their interest
and realize that there's so many other music
out there.
And so many other things out there that
you could be enjoying!
They put so much effort into their social media
and do such a great job at it,
I'm so happy that they got this award.
Yes. So congratulations to BTS!
You are so deserving.
So if your first exposure to BTS was at this year's
Billboard Music Awards,
