How to keep unwanted viewers from watching your music unboxing - Duration: 3:09.
Believe it or not, sometimes, getting someone to watch one of your unboxing videos
is actually kind of a bad thing.
Hi folks, Steven here.
So, I've been doing music unboxings for a while,
and there's kind of a common problem I run into, and I've tried to fix it,
Haven't completely figured it out, but I did want to share what I've been running into. Now,
As the title of this video [implies], the problem is I'm getting folks...
...watching the video who I don't really want to-and you might be wondering,
"Well, why would you want to discourage people from watching one of your videos?"
Well, one of the things with music unboxings in particular, is that there are always going to be
folks on YouTube who are trying to listen to the song,
And if they see your video, they might click on it, and watch for a few seconds,
realize it's not what they wanted, and click away, and that really
knocks down your retention time and stuff like that.
It's generally not good in terms of the YouTube algorithm, in terms of
having it promote your video.
And this can be especially common when the underlying song is blocked from YouTube-
[I] don't want to get into the music industry politics of all that, but
that will cause your video to appear a little bit higher,
and drastically increase the chance that someone will accidentally click on it.
So, how do you deal this, how do you prevent it? Well, I've come up with a few ideas I've tried.
One of the big things is to emphasize the word "Unboxing" in your title,
and in your thumbnail.
So, you may notice that I put "Unboxing" in square brackets in most of my recent videos,
and that draws attention, and then in the tumbnail it's in big letters,
and I certainly hope that when people see that, that's the first thing they see there,
so they know, "Oh, this isn't the actual song, it's just an unboxing."
The next thing you can do is reduce how much attention the cover gets.
You could make it a little smaller, I suppose,
but one thing I do, in Photoshop I'll de-saturate it, so that it doesn't draw your eye quite as much,
and in some cases, I won't even use the cover of it at all, I'll use some other art
or something else I've scanned in there.
I did this wuth the "XY&Z Collection" from early 2016.
In some cases, you may not even want to put the name of it in the title
or the description perhaps.
There's a particular "worst-case" where this happened, actually. It was the "Tweedia" single, the
ending theme to the Japanese version of the Hoopa movie.
Because the title was in English, I got a lot of hits from Japan,
and they would watch for a few seconds, and then click away, so
obviously that was a case where they were expecting a song, they got an unboxing,
didn't like it, and they were gone.
So, those are some ideas, those are things I've tried so far. Hasn't totally solved the problem, but
made some progress-I hope.
