The future of Australias relationship with its indigenous peoples could be significantly influenced by a meeting at Uluru this week. It will discuss changing the constitution, but may also include support for a treaty.
Australia does not have one, unlike many nations, reports Trevor Marshallsea. In 1832, the governor of Van Diemens Land reflected ruefully on his colonial administrations chaotic - and bloody - relationship with the islands indigenous population.
Amid a period of great conflict between white colonists and Aborigines known as the Black War, Governor George Arthur said it was a fatal error a treaty had not been entered into with the Aboriginal people of whats now the Australian state of Tasmania, after white settlement had commenced some 30 years earlier.
The absence of a treaty was cited by Mr Arthur as a crucial and aggravating factor in relations with the first inhabitants of the island, the scene of some of the worst treatment inflicted on Aborigines by British colonists.
Almost 200 years later, Australia remains the only Commonwealth country to have never signed a treaty with its indigenous people.
While treaties were established early on in other British dominions such as New Zealand, Canada and in the United States, the situation in Australia has been, often notoriously, different. Indigenous leaders meet for historic talks.
Fifty years ago this Saturday, a landmark referendum voted for the countrys constitution to be changed to allow Aborigines to be counted among all Australians (whereas they had previously been excluded from the national census), and to shift power to legislate on indigenous affairs from the states to the federal government.

In 1988, then Prime Minister Bob Hawke was presented with the Barunga Statement, named after an Aboriginal community. Written on bark, it called for a treaty.
The cause had been thrust forcefully into the public consciousness in the late 1980s in various ways. One was rock band Midnight Oils 1987 hit Beds Are Burning, which implored white Australia to pay the rent, to pay our share.
Part-Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi had an international hit with Treaty a few years later. On receiving the Barunga Statement, which he had hung on a wall in Canberras Parliament House, Mr Hawke vowed there would be a treaty by 1990.
In 1992, Prime Minister Paul Keating made a now-famous speech in the Aboriginal-centric Sydney suburb of Redfern, addressing harsh truths about the often brutal and murderous dispossessing of the countrys traditional owners.
A year later came the watershed Native Title act, which threw out the historical view that Australia before European settlement in 1788 essentially belonged to no-one.
And in 2008 Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a long-awaited apology to Australias indigenous peoples, for policies that had inflicted suffering on them.
Despite these words, acts and gestures, there is still no treaty. Also, there remain contentious sections of the nations constitution which are race-based, although two significant others were removed in the 1967 referendum.
Section 25 still says states can disqualify people from voting in elections on account of their race. Section 51 (xxvi) empowers the government to legislate for the people of any race for whom it is deemed necessary to make special laws.

This week, marking the referendums 50th anniversary, an Aboriginal leaders summit at Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock) is hopeful of reaching consensus on whether - and how - the constitution should be changed.
But some delegations are expected to make statements about the need for a treaty, and financial compensation. The meeting will also shine a light on white Australias troubled, and peculiar, historical attitude to the countrys first inhabitants.
Australias distinct problem, historians say, took root from reports delivered back in England by the first white men to land on the east coast in 1770.
Captain James Cook and (botanist) Joseph Banks reported the Aborigines were few in number and were just wandering around the place, says University of Sydney history professor Mark McKenna.

Thus when Admiral Arthur Phillip led the first fleet to begin the colony of New South Wales in 1788, Mr McKenna says, there was no expectation any treaty with the locals would have to be signed.

Tasmanian Aboriginal writer and activist Michael Mansell told the BBC the English were deceived by their perceptions of Australian indigenous culture, including that they lived in small groups, by contrast to the large and seemingly more organised tribes of North America.

They werent riding horses like the native North Americans. They didnt have permanent dwellings. It was harder to discern who their leaders were. So they were regarded as a vulgar and backward people who could be treated as the invaders liked.
In 1840 colonial officials in New Zealand were sitting down with the Maoris to sign the Treaty of Waitangi. At the same time in Australia, Aborigines were being hunted down, shot and slaughtered.
All of this fostered a deeply entrenched cultural bias against Aboriginal people which, ever since, has been very hard to shake, both in attitudes and in a substantive way.
While provision was made for indigenous people in Canadas constitution in 1867, Mr Mansell points out that the only mention of Aborigines in Australias constitution of 1901 was to exclude us.
At that time, Australias first prime minister, Edmund Barton, said race-based clauses in the constitution allowed his government to regulate the affairs of the people of coloured or inferior races who are in the Commonwealth.
Little changed in attitudes in the ensuing years.
This, Mr Mansell says, was partly due to a widespread belief that the Aboriginal race would simply die out, and be bred in amongst the European community, and because of the countrys so-called White Australia policy on immigration.

While the 1980s and early 1990s brought attitudinal change, the plight of Aborigines was set back, Mr McKenna and Mr Mansell agree, under the conservative John Howard government of 1996-2007.
Contrasting Mr Keatings Redfern Speech, Mr Howard said he would not take a black armband view of Australias history on Aboriginal relations.
In 2000 he said a country does not make a treaty with itself. And in 2004 he announced the abolition of the peak government body handling indigenous issues, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), following corruption investigations.
John Howard shut the Aboriginal movement down completely, Mr Mansell says. ATSIC had its problems, but it was a sound moral concept. Theres been plenty of crooked MPs, but they dont shut down parliament..
Still, despite Australias troubled past on indigenous matters, and fears from government and business on the implications of a treaty, of financial compensation, or of official recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty over Australian lands, Mr Mansell is very optimistic substantive change can be sparked by this weeks summit.
What we need is a clear plan capable of being adopted by governments which will not interfere with the rest of Australia but will give empowerment to Aborigines, and give land back to those who cant get it under the Native Title Act, Mr Mansell said.
With Australias constitution difficult to change, many agree a more pressing need is the establishment of a national representative body allowing Aborigines to make their own decisions on matters affecting them, rather than have decisions forced on them from Canberra.
A treaty would break the 200-year-old cycle of governments not negotiating with the Aboriginal people, says Mr McKenna, adding it would provide a framework for how negotiations are held on indigenous issues such as welfare, employment, education, health and land ownership.
It would say were no longer just going to do things to them, but that theyre included and empowered.

got I got a phone call from a lady and
she's being sued for rent possession
she'd crawl behind her rent and they
were soon to kick her out of her
apartment and make her humbles now I
don't handle a case like that I've got
wine I want to get some information from
her so I could refer to a lawyer I know
that I knew could help her well I got
talking to her and I learned that the
reason she didn't pay her rent was
because she slipped on some ice on a
sidewalk outside her apartment broke her
leg and never able to return her to work
and her doctors told her that they
didn't expect her Abril effort to return
to work
so I spent more time talking to her and
I learned that what had happened is that
she'd fallen during a snowstorm she'd
gone outside just to take her dog out to
go to the bathroom in the morning and
she walked on the sidewalk went from her
apartment down to the or the street and
she stepped on some ice underneath that
snow had been created by a previous
snowfall where tenants walking back and
forth to the apartment had made ridges
and then it froze into ice and then this
new snowfall came over over on top and
hit it well we all know that I learned
that the landlord would shovel snow out
of the street on the sidewalk along the
street but the sidewalk from the street
to the apartment they wouldn't and
that's what traded base condition now we
had to get around a law that says that
landlord if there's
so that's common to the entire area
they're not response for him but he gets
hurt on that the conditions have to be
different so what we did is we develop
the legal theory that the conditions
created by the people walking on the
previous snowfall cleaned up the ice to
get covered by snow was not coming to
the area it was created by their tenants
and that the snow on top of it the new
snow eliminated any comparative or
actual contributory fault and we found
it on to file a counterclaim in that
case and wound up getting the lady a 1.2
million dollar verdict now I the look on
the landlord's face when that verdict
came back was worth every minute I spent
repairing the case for drop the look of
shock on them when they got held
accountable for violating you know our
safety rules and I sometimes out drive
through that neighborhood their real
purpose and I can guarantee you those
sidewalks for being shoveled down they
were before but they are now did that
require a lot of discovery on your part
because it's pretty interesting that you
just figured out about the hidden layer
of ice well it's part it's part legal
discovery you know we got the landlord's
records on what they did and what they
paid to have done but the actual stuff
that takes a ground work we had to go
knocking on doors talking to other
tenants finding people that you know
tradesmen who visit the area and am i
doing that we've found that's when we
got neighbors and other people here even
that would talked about the system where
they would to show that Sidewalk from
the run of the apartment building to the
actual Street and we're defendants in
many cases don't like to give you that
information so they try to hide a pack
so we had to develop other means if the
discover that and that's why sometimes
you know I own this particular case we
actually found a former employee who's
willing to come forward and talk about
how these conditions existed and put up
the tents at risk and it's more than
just knowing the law okay
most lawyers know the law okay but it's
actually getting the people to come
forward and tell you what the really
true facts in the true story is that's
the hard place is getting people to come
forward until the real story and that's
where we have to be creative in this

Purification Essential Oil Blend from Young Living is our Must Have Monday - Duration: 10:52.
hey there it's must-have Monday and
today we are talking about an oil that
will not only help you a get rid of
yucky odors in your house in your car
and other places but it is also one that
is beneficial for your skin and that oil
is purification of from young living so
let's talk a little bit more about it
hey guys it's Natalie with living the
oil life thank you for taking a few
minutes out of your busy day to join us
and like I said it is must-have Monday
and we're talking about purification oil
which most of us with young living are
very familiar with because it comes in
the premium starter kit when you enroll
and it comes in the five milliliter
bottle with other ten little amazing
oils also but often times we use an oil
and then we don't use it all the time so
sometimes we forget about it it sits on
a shelf we're not quite sure what to do
with it but purification is an oil that
you are definitely going to want to have
for summer now it is a blend with young
Livie which means there is more than one
oil in here there at are actually six
and those oils are citronella myrtle
lemongrass lavender rosemary and tea
tree oil and we know how amazing all six
of those oils are and you put them
together and you have an even more
amazing blend it is an aromatic topical
oil so that you can use it in your
diffuser you can inhale it you can spray
it and or you can use it topically on
your skin and to me the aroma is very
bright it's a very crisp it's very
uplifting and I can smell mostly
lemongrass in it I smell a little bit of
the citronella I do smell a little bit
of the tea tree but I really don't smell
the lavender in it it's a very faint but
I love this oil now the great thing
about purification is that it doesn't
just mask the odors like a lot of
commercial store brand fresheners
they really don't get rid of the odor
they just kind of mask it and you are
breathing in all of those harsh
chemicals that are in your fresheners
are in your air fresheners and those can
cause respiratory issues they can cause
headaches they can cause all kinds of
yucky stuff that you really don't want
you want crisp clean fresh air and
that's why you want to use purification
now some of the ways that you can use it
are in your laundry it can help you to
get rid of those gross dryer sheets that
also are full of harsh chemicals that go
into your clothes and then while you're
wearing your clothes that gets on to
your skin and we don't want that dewy so
all you need to do is put a few drops on
a wet cloth on a wet t-shirt if you use
the dryer balls the wool dryer balls you
can put a couple of drops on that and it
will not only help to freshen your
laundry but it will help you get rid of
more toxins out of your house you can
also use it on your dogs on your pets I
use this for my dog all the time because
he goes outside and he stinks when he
comes in so I have a little I should
have gotten it I will either spray it
directly on his brush or I have this
little hand map that you put on your
hand and it has a smooth side and a
little rough side and I'll spray it on
there and just rub him down and then
every once awhile if he's not too too
stinky I'll just put it on my hands and
rub it all over him and it smells so
much better than a stinky dog speaking
of dogs you can use it within the barns
I know a lot of people use it with their
horses they diffuse it in the barns and
apparently the horses love it and people
love it because it smells so wonderful
you can put two drops on cotton balls
put them on in your sneakers put them in
the drug gym bags in the soccer bags in
the hockey bags all kinds of stuff where
odors can be heat lurking use
purification in there you can use it as
a carpet deodorizer we have done the
making takes where we take a little
parmesan a shaker bottle and fill it
with a cup of baking soda and then about
10 to 15 drops of purification shake it
up make sure you put something on top so
that the holes shake it up
wrinkle it on your carpet let it sit for
about 10-15 minutes and then vacuum it
up and you've got a fresh carpet it is
also great as a carrier with a carrier
oil for a foot massage and another great
way to use for your skin is add it to
animal scents or your favorite lotion
your favorite clean lotion and it can
help to moisturize your skin and improve
the appearance of a healthy-looking skin
you can also use it for non cystic acne
every once in a while we know that
things can pop up because of stress the
foods that we eat things that we're
going through that kind of thing
purification put a little drop of
purification on your face if you have
very sensitive skin make sure you use a
carrier oil and with teenagers it would
be helped to reduce the appearance of
blemishes but you can use it neat by
itself also people have used it as
deodorant I have not but I hear that
they've used a deodorant you can also
use it when you're shaving too sometimes
you get that little bit of razor burn
and you can help to soothe that a little
bit you can add it to your Young Living
bath and gel or your favorite clean body
gel and use it during a bath or if you
want a nice soothing relaxing bath you
can put it in a cup of Epsom salt add a
little bit of the purification let it
sit let it marinate for a little bit and
then sprinkle that in your bath and have
a wonderful soothing bath that way now
in the kitchen it is great for cooking
especially people are fishing a lot now
and you're frying and you're cooking
fish and it can really stink up the
house diffuse the purification as you
are cooking or if you've cooked
something a little bit too long it would
be great to diffuse purification then
you can also put a few drops on a cotton
ball stick it on the bottom in the
bottom of your trashcan or spritz some
in there when you change your trash can
liner it is also great to diffuse before
and after company comes just to give
your home a little bit of a freshness if
you're going on vacation take some with
you because you never know what your
hotel room is your condo or anything
like that is going to smell like and
then.we
you get back from vacation make sure you
have a couple of drops of purification
ready to go in your diffuser because
when we know we've been gone for a while
we come in and the house kind of smells
a little bit stale so you want to make
sure you have your diffuser ready to go
with purification in the car it is great
to put in your USB or your travel
diffuser especially when you're picking
up kids from camp from summer camp from
practices from being outside and playing
and they are stinking you can make sure
you defuse that in the car to kind of
dispel those odors so you're not
stinking everybody up and it's an also
an important oil to have when you're
going to those games or you're going out
you're having barbecues you're going to
be outside for a long time purification
is the perfect oil to have to have an
annoyance free outside time I will take
it and put it in a spray bottle you can
use a spray bottle like this this is
kind of a small one there's of course
different sizes but put a few drops in
here with a little bit of water some
people like to add witch hazel or a
little bit of salt to keep it emulsified
but just give it a little bit of a shake
and spray all over yourself on your
clothes on your body everywhere when
you're hiking camping sitting out at
games anytime there can be those little
annoyances around you make sure you have
your purification on hand and speaking
of the little annoyances I have used
purification when I've gone outside and
I'm only outside for like a couple of
minutes getting something go even just
going to the car to get something and
all of a sudden you're just attacked and
I come in and I'm red and I'm itchy and
it's just oh irritating me I'll just
take my purification oil and rub it on
there and that itchiness from is gone
within a few minutes and I love that I
don't have to rely on anything with a
lot of bad chemicals in it to help get
rid of that that little irritation and
so while you're barbecuing having your
picnic you're out on the porch or
whatever make sure you have your
diffuser going or you could even
probably put like some bowls out with a
little bit of baking soda and a little
bit of purification oil in there
just surround yourself with it and if
you're doing summer projects and you're
getting ready to repaint rooms repaint
your house whatever I've heard that
people have actually put purification in
their paint cans and that helps to cut
down on the paint fumes that you may be
smelling that are not very good for you
either now it also will help to dispel
any negative or chaotic energy that may
be in the house or or in your office or
anywhere any tension sometimes you walk
in a room and you can just feel the
tension you could just cut it with a
knife and so a purification would be
great to diffuse then or use your DIY
room spray with water and about 15-20
drops of purification and then just
spritz the room down I don't think you
need to spritz the people down but if
they have some a lot of negative energy
you may want to spritz them too and just
say oh I just would do smug no just
kidding
so those are the different ways that you
can use purification oil the best part
is it is only 1875 wholesale that's it
1875 and this little bottle will
probably last me through the summer time

I don't want people to have to go through this.
No one, no one deserves to have to go through this.
We weren't put on this planet for this.
if you wake up and you just feel gray,
You don't know why. You don't have the
understanding of knowing why.
You just, you wake up and you just don't feel
you just don't feel right, you know.
You walk outside and it's nice and sunny and
everything but you don't notice that.
you see blurry.
it's just a blurry painting that you're
trying to focus on what you're trying to look at.
But then you know, but then
there's days where you're like I'm on top of the world,
try to get things figured out,
whatever but then it just goes right back.
It's just an up and down battle, it just you
don't know when it's going to happen,
it just happens.
Every day you just hope it's going to be a better day.
I've been hospitalized a couple times,
or a few times in my life.
As far as prior to the military I have
only it was one time I
attempted suicide, which I've never had a
thought of wanting, I've never,
I've never thought of it like ever in my life I've
never thought of suicide I've never
attempted or anything but I got on these meds
I think that's what really twisted my
head and so I you know was hospitalized
for a week out at Lakeview Hospital,
and then the military
after Afghanistan, I searched for, I was
in Afghanistan for a year and I was
fine, you know when I got out. I was fine.
I loved being at home you know
my kids and everything you know it was
great and then about five months in
I just lost my mind.
I just started just losing it.
I take medication through the VA and stuff
but they they've been helping a lot.
Disc golfing, I got into that three years ago
my brother he just introduced me to it,
and then detailing cars, that's my, that's my thing.
Besides my mom and everything
you know my mom is an awesome supporter
but my brother you know he helped me with
everything, he's the one, you know when I'm
having you know, if I'm having
issues or whatever he's there.
I just finished this course, peer-to-peer
and it was a 10-week course and you know you
have to be committed to it cause after
the fourth one you tell your story.
It is so relieving, like I said you know when
we were doing this peer-to-peer and
then you know, you tell your story
and you hear these stories and you're like
holy cow, like we are way more in common
than I realized, like you know and
it's so satisfying to see that to
to know that someone else, because yeah
it is hard to explain. It is so hard to
explain to people who have to, who
doesn't understand and when you when you
when you see when you meet someone that
just knows exactly what you're talking
about it's like oh my gosh I can
actually have this conversation this is
great and so and of course with me it's
talking about, it just makes me feel
so much better.
There are more people that have these
problems than you realize.
You know because it's kind of like a
hiding in the closet type of thing,
it's kind of that situation.
Everyone, there are so many people who
are, who deal with this.
Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid to admit it.
Just get the help, because it'll
better your life and everyone else's around you.
Let's turn this into a trend.
that's my, that's the goal.
