I'm Hannah from Upserve and today we are going to cover a hot social media topic: Instagram
and its algorithm update.
For all of you social media users out there – this update will change the way you use
Instagram for your restaurant, and the way your followers view your content.
Did you know that you miss on average 70% of the photos in your Instagram feed?
And WHY is this?
Right now, your feed is a chronological, endless scroll of posts by the accounts that you follow.
With the growth of Instagram and its user base, it's becoming harder and harder to
keep up with all of those cat photos..err.. photos that people share.
So Instagram changing its algorithm IS A BIG DEAL!
And as usual all of social media has freaked out.
And because restaurants make up a large portion of Instagram users, we are going to talk about
what this means for YOU.
But not to worry: whether you are just breaking into Instagram or are a seasoned vet – this
change will benefit you.
1)How Instagram will create your feed The goal of this change is to "See the moments
you care about first".
Your feed will populate based on an algorithm, showing pictures and videos based on these
three variables.
Will you like the content?
What is your relationship with the poster? and How long ago the post was shared?
Basically, all the posts will be there- just in a different order.
Picture this: If my favorite restaurant posted a photo of
a new menu special while I'm asleep, it will be waiting for me when I wake up, instead
of being hidden in a sea of posts from that morning.
What this means for your restaurant Put simply, keep doing you.
The playing field will finally be level for everyone, no matter how much of a time commitment
you can give to an Instagram marketing strategy.
Sometimes it can be hard to take precious time out of your busy day to devote to social
media.
If you are a restaurateur first and social media expert second, this update is nothing
but positive.
For example: When you post a picture promoting your upcoming
Taco Tuesday event, instead of guessing "hmm i hope that my fans will be online scrolling
Instagram right now", you can post and know that they will.
Thanks to this update your fans will never again miss a post (or a Taco Tuesday!)
Turn on What Notifications?
You have probably seen a ton of posts similar to this one:
A PSA asking followers to turn their notifications on to "stay in touch".
By turning this on, your followers will be alerted every time you post.
If you want to be proactive, you could create a post similar to this one asking fans to
keep up with your posts.
Bonus ! I think my Instagram needs a refresher!
Excited about this update but think your restaurant still needs to step up its Insta game?!
You could try posting some behind the scenes shots, or even posting around holidays.
Also, don't forget video – especially if you have live music!
You could also get on that #NationalSOMETHINGday bandwagon.
For example, #NationalBurgerDay or #NationalBeerDay.
Instagram is creative – just like you – so you're already a natural!
The Magic Ingredient: This update is going to be awesome for your
restaurant.
Instead of focusing your strategy on what time to post, you can feed your guests with
food pics on your watch.
