Why Don't the U.S., Myanmar, and Liberia Use the Metric System? - Duration: 8:05.

In 2010, my brother and I took a road trip to Alaska.

As soon as we crossed the border into Canada, we had to figure out how many liters were in a gallon when we filled up the gas tank and how many kilometers were in a mile when we read speed limit signs.

It was a minor inconvenience, and we got used to it pretty quickly.

o me, the metric system, the measuring system of the meter, liter, and gram, based on units of 10, is ridiculously easy compared to the standard, or imperial measuring system the United States uses.

But throughout its history, the United States has stubbornly resisted the metric system.

And yet, the metric system is by far the most common way to measure stuff around the world.

Only three countries- the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia, have yet to adopt it.

So why can't they get on board?

Well let's start with the history of the metric system.

The story of the metric system begins in Belgium, where this dude, Simon Stevin came up with the idea.

The British philosopher John Wilkins expanded on Stevin's idea and helped promote it further, but it wasn't until the French Revolution that it became a reality.

The revolutionaries who overthrew the French monarchy decided the time was right to get everybody on the same measuring system.

Before this, it's estimated that around a quarter of a million different units of measure were used in France.

The idea was, that if everyone was on the same page, less people would be ripped off and everything would be more efficient.

The French philosopher Marquis de Condorcet (con door say) famously proclaimed the metric system to be "for all people for all time."

And yet, it was hard for the new French government to enforce this new system.

People were resistant to change, and old units were sometimes used locally.

After Napoleon took over, the metric system expanded as the French Empire expanded across the continent.

After Napoleon fell, many European countries decided to keep it because they kind of liked it, and it made trade easier.

Eventually, as these European countries started colonizing the rest of the world, the metric system spread across the globe.

But not to the United States.

After the French first established the metric system, Americans thought about doing the same.

Thomas Jefferson, the secretary of state at the time, straight up rejected the metric system, saying it was too French.

And here TJ was a France fan.

I should note that he actually was cool with a different standardized decimal system that used traditional names for units.

Regardless, even as the metric system spread, this precedent set by Jefferson held.

Sure, there were still plenty of attempts to adopt it later on in the United States.

Congress even passed The Metric Act of 1866, in uh, 1866 to legalize use of the metric system in the United States.

In the early 1900s, famous people like Alexander Graham Bell testified before Congress, urging them to adopt it.

In 1927, Americans sent over 100,000 petitions to Congress begging them to officially adopt it.

That year, those countries who had officially adopted the metric system were still in the minority.

But most Americans resisted, calling metric system proponents elitist and thinking the rest of the world should follow them, not the other way around.

And besides, the United Kingdom used the imperial system, too, so nah nah nah nah nah nah.

But in a shocking turn of events, in 1973 the UK officially required the country to use the metric system to help their economy.

Partially in response to this, President Gerald Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act into law in 1975.

This law declared the metric system the best for trade and commerce and set up the United States Metric Board to help transition the country into the metric system.

And yet, because the law was voluntary, the United States has yet to fully implement it, which is why there is only one random highway in Arizona that has all metric road signs.

Surprisingly, by some estimates, half the country does use the metric system in some form or another.

Think about it.

That 2-liter bottle of Dr. Thunder you bought the other day.

That 5k race you participated in the day after to burn off all those calories you gained from the Dr. Thunder.

So why don't all Americans get on the same page?

Basically because the transition would be a pain in the butt.

It would cost a lot and take a lot of time to transfer everything over, and the infrastructure and many industries within the country rely on the imperial system.

Momentum is a hard thing to reverse.

And because the United States remains the top superpower of the world, it has the luxury of pointing its middle finger at those who look down on it for not adopting the metric system.

The American government hasn't really even brought up the metric system since the Carter administration.

So that's why the United States doesn't use the metric system.

I'm sorry, I forgot about Myanmar and Liberia.

Myanmar and Liberia are tiny countries that you would think would benefit greatly from converting to the metric system.

So that is why they do already use the metric system.

Ok, I probably should explain here.

The governments haven't officially declared the metric system to be official, but if you go there, most people are using the metric system already.

Myanmar resisted the metric system and used more traditional forms of measurement for so long due to their isolation.

After they declared their independence from British rule in 1948, they cut themselves off from the rest of the world, and thus didn't have a need to adopt the metric system.

Now that they are more open, that's changing.

What about Liberia?

Well, Liberia was founded by Americans, yo.

It's constitution, modeled after the U.S. Constitution, was drafted in Washington, D.C., and its capital, Monrovia, was named after U.S. President James Monroe.

It was settled by thousands of free African Americans during the 1800s, and they brought American culture and traditions with them, including the imperial measuring system.

In both Myanmar and Liberia, the government is in the process of making the metric system official.

In fact, by the time you watch this video, the United States might be the only metric system holdout left.

I have a confession to make.

The title of this video "Why don't the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia use the metric system", is a bit misleading.

If you go to these countries, a lot of people there are using the metric system.

It's just that it's not official...yet.

As matter of fact, in countries like Guatemala and Belize, where it is official, you'll see plenty of people NOT using the metric system.

Regardless, when someone asks you why the U.S. will likely be the last country to officially adopt the metric system, just tell them it's Thomas Jefferson's fault.

Freaking Thomas Jefferson.

What did he ever do for the United States?

prevent further North Korean provocations... and pressure the regime to abandon its nuclear

weapons.

"The leaders agreed to continue our close coordination in response to North Korea's

destabilizing violations of UN Security Council resolutions and hold North Korea accountable

for its unlawful actions."

Kang and Tillerson also assessed the current security situation on the Korean Peninsula...

and followed-up on the results of last month's summit between Presidents Moon Jae-in and

Donald Trump.

Close cooperation between the allies is as important as ever,... especially considering

that the Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency said this week that North Korea would be able

to field a nuclear-capable ICBM next year.

Responding to that report,… a senior U.S. official, who asked not to be named, said

the North is at a point of attaining a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile "pretty soon."

This is in line with U.S. Army chief Mark Milley's remarks that North Korea's ICBM threat

is advancing faster than most people thought possible.

"North Korea has advanced significantly quicker than many of the expected.

Their intercontinental ballistic missile capability could possibly strike the United States.

More to follow but the time has shortened significantly."

While there are also analysts who do not hold the same assessment as the Pentagon,... it's

hard to argue that North Korea isn't making big strides forward in its missile development.

CIA has already labeled Pyongyang as a massive liability risk and said its mission center

on North Korea is reviewing various options on the regime... when diplomacy does not work

any longer.

and they were coming in and they had heard about it

and they were looking for it because friends I'm sure friends had said have you tried CBD

they had never thought of coming into a store like ours

so the other exciting thing for us is that it's bringing in people

who would't otherwise frequent our business.

Now I'm hearing that all over the country, and I just want to fact-check this

We're hitting the road for Centreville Maryland, which was until recently a spot

for the summer retreat for the Russian embassy.

In December, Barack Obama took away the compound and a similar one in New York.

He said they were being used for espionage.

Yes we are just coming up on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge now

so about 20 minutes out of town I guess.

That is "Smokey" Sigler.

He's one of the few people in town that's actually been out to the compound.

He was the local politician.

Talking people here there was there was a little bit of

you know eyebrow-raising at the idea that there's Russian spies.

If you didn't know they were here you wouldn't know they were here.

Is there something going on behind the scenes...

I mean it's a sleepy little town.

If somebody from DC wants to come over here and have a meeting with the Russians, who's gonna know?

We're heading out to the compound now and it's interesting to hear from somebody who's been inside.

You know we're not going to get as close as he did obviously.

So this is the place.

It's a strategically grown ivy on this fence here I think.

So you can't see too much of what's going on back there.

But well 46 acres right. So, I mean, that's a whole lot of land back there that they've got.

We couldn't really get through now we're going to try and go over

Trump's trying to improve relations with Russia

and Russia's saying we're not going to get there until you reverse these little policies

from Obama that we didn't like.

North Korea 'may fire new test missile' to mark Victory Day war anniversary, US fears - Duration: 4:18.

North Korea 'may fire new test missile' to mark Victory Day war anniversary, US fears

US officials have said they fear North Korea may test fire another missile, using the 64th anniversary of the end of the Korean War to mark its new military assertiveness.

Both US and South Korean media have cited intelligence and military officials saying transporter vehicles carrying launching equipment had been seen on the move in North Korea, a suggestion that an imminent test may be underway.

July 27 marks the anniversary of the end of the three-year-long war and is celebrated as Victory Day in North Korea.

"Movements by transporter erector launchers carrying intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch tubes have been continuously observed in North Pyongan (province)," a South Korean government source was quoted by the country's Yonhap news agency, according to the AFP.

  North Korea celebrates rocket launch with massive concert. "There is a high possibility that the North may carry out (the test launch) around the July 27 armistice day.

Reuters quoted unidentified US officials saying they had seen increased North Korean activity at a site in the western city of Kusong that could be preparations for another missile test.

It was the latest of a series of signs over the past week that the North may be preparing for launching an ICBM or an intermediate-range missile.

After months of sabre-rattling from Washington, and following a series of missile tests by the East Asian nation, North Korea earlier this month said it had conducted its first test of an ICBM and mastered the technology needed to deploy a nuclear warhead via the missile.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who personally oversaw the launch, described it as gift to the "American b**tards".

Pyongyang's state media said the test verified the atmospheric re-entry of the warhead, which experts say may be able to reach the US states of Alaska or Hawaii. The news triggered officials in Hawaii to test emergency preparedness.

Despite such concerns, the vice chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff recently said the 4 July test by North Korea stopped short of showing it had the ability to strike the United States "with any degree of accuracy".

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Pentagon spy agency, had assessed that North Korea will be able to field a nuclear-capable ICBM by next year, earlier than previously thought.

North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un reacts during the test-fire of intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14 (Reuters). According to two US officials, however, some other analysts who study North Korea's missile programme do not agree with the DIA assessment.

"DIA and the South Koreans tend to be at the leading edge of estimates on North Korea's military programmes, and that's understandable," said one of the officials.

New U.S / Russia cold war is hotting up. - Duration: 3:42.

Welcome back fellow newshounds. I'm Gruffdkins and here we cover some of

the stories you may not see on your standard news networks. Today. A new cold

war with Russia is hotting up. The Pentagon and NATO are watching very

closely as Russia prepares for what is expected to be a massive military

exercise in a few short weeks. The exercise known as 'Zapan' will take place

in Belarus and is likely to involve up to 100,000 troops, a huge amount of

hardware, and some new technology and techniques in what is basically a war

rehearsal. Experts and analysts from NATO and the US will be particularly

interested to see if they will be using the same tactics they did in Syria where

they were using fairly low tech drones to great effect, such as jamming

communications and satellite signals. Russia is more renowned for its

innovative and unconventional tactics which it develops to try and counter the

more high-tech and richer military of the US. Lately some of the jamming

stations caused several vessels in the Baltic to get a ghost GPS reading and

show them as being several miles from their actual position. Russia also

appears to have been taking notice of how Islamic State used cheap drones as

weapon delivery systems. Videos from testing ranges have shown Russian drones

dropping bombs on targets, as well as being used for their more obvious role

of surveillance to spy on and spot enemy forces. One senior analyst said it is

likely that the 'Zapad' exercise will see tactics such as "unmanned aircraft in

swarming configurations as well as unmanned ground vehicles and small

drones working together to augment ground forces."

Of course the United States military has been developing this technology and its

usage for years and is way ahead of the curve but there is little doubt that

Russia is very good at observing and adapting others ideas and using low tech

to achieve high results. It is not this that is a concern however. What is more

worrying is what this could mean in Eastern Europe. The rapid exercise is set

to be the biggest display of Russian military forces since the end of the

last cold war and is making allies in Europe extremely nervous.

The head of US Special Operations Command, General Raymond Thomas, said the

big worry is that they are using this as a way to deploy their forces nearer to

NATO and after the exercise these forces will stay in the area. "And that's not

paranoia" he said Eastern European countries are concerned it is, quote: "a

play to get closer and better staging, to bite off a piece of their country much

like they did eastern Ukraine and Crimea." With this coming shortly after the US

and NATO exercises in Eastern Europe and the highly unusual Chinese and Russian

naval exercises in the Baltic there is no doubt old adversaries are once again

rearing their heads and flexing their military muscles. We will try to keep you

Donald Trump.

The phone conversation was the first since North Korea launched what it claimed to be

an ICBM on July 4th.

U.S. Senate votes overwhelmingly in favor of new N. Korea sanctions - Duration: 2:00.

The U.S. Senate has voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new bill... that will introduce

sweeping sanctions on three countries -- Russia, Iran...

AND North Korea.

Watchers say that, while the bill still requires President Trump's signature,... the strength

of bi-partisan support has made the passage all but a formality.

Our Yu Joon-hee has more.

The Senate has approved a package of new sanctions... aimed at North Korea, Russia and Iran,...

with a near unanimous, majority vote of 97 to 2.

The bill had been sent to the Senate, after passing the House of Representatives on Tuesday,

also with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

The White House has not definitively said...

whether President Trump will sign off on the legislation,... but exercising his veto could

be difficult, given the nearly undivided Congressional support for the new measures.

The bill would authorize sanctions... on entities that provide North Korea with crude oil, or

employ guest workers from the country, who often work in inhumane conditions and are

denied access to basic wages and benefits.

It also aims to tighten maritime controls,... calling for seizures and port denials for

vessels operated by Pyongyang, that do not comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

Iran has also been slapped with new sanctions for its destabilizing behavior, while Russia

is being reprimanded for its alleged meddling in last year's U.S. Presidential election,

and other actions undermining Washington's interests.

Meanwhile, a Japanese government official says the Abe administration is planning to

introduce unilateral sanctions of its own against North Korea.

Tokyo's cabinet is deliberating over measures, to freeze the assets of entities and individuals,

with connections to the regime's nuclear and missile programs.

The Japanese government has already drawn up a list of targets,... including two Chinese

trading firms and nine individuals providing financial services to Pyongyang.

This reflects a growing sense of urgency by the regional powers, in taking action against

the regime... after it stunned the world with its first-ever test launch of an ICBM earlier

this month.

SOMEBODY THAT HELPED ME IN A BUSINESS SITUATION.

SHE WASN'T A BELIEVER.

AND I REMEMBER ONE TIME, HER SAYIN' TO ME, "YOU KNOW,

YOU TALK ABOUT GOD LIKE YOU KNOW HIM."

IF THEY DON'T GET SOMEBODY IN THE HOOK RIGHT AWAY, THEN

THEY'RE GONNA THROW IN THE TOWEL AND GIVE UP.

SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA BE WILLING TO JUST BE A CHRISTIAN AROUND

SOMEBODY FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, AND MAYBE YOU CAN'T SAY

THEN THEY OVEREAT BECAUSE THEY DON'T FEEL GOOD.

SO THAT MAKES 'EM MAD BECAUSE NOW THEY'RE GAININ' WEIGHT.

NOW THEY GET EASILY OFFENDED.

DON'T LET OTHER PEOPLE BE A THREAT TO YOU.

LET THEM BE AN EXAMPLE TO YOU.

US Warns INDIA and CHINA are in a Brink of Military Battle

In WASHINGTON A US expert has said that the ongoing border dispute between the Indian

and Chinese troops at Doklam in the Sikkim sector could lead to a war.

"Yes I do, and I don't say that lightly," Jeff M. Smith, a scholar at the American Foreign

Policy Council, told the New York Times when he was asked whether he thought the India-China

stand-off could spiral into war.

"Both sides have taken hardline positions that make it difficult to back down.

The messaging is eerily similar," Smith said, referring to the countries' 1962 war that

was also over border disputes.

Doklam, at the tri-junction of China, India, and Bhutan, holds strategic importance for

all three.

The border row between the two countries was triggered in June when the Indian Army stopped

a road construction by Chinese troops in Doklam.

China has told India repeatedly to withdraw troops from Doklam, which it calls as its

own territory.

New Delhi has said that troops from both sides should withdraw for a dialogue as Doklam belongs

to its ally Bhutan.

Bhutan, a Himalayan nation that has no diplomatic ties with China, also protested against the

road construction by Chinese troops.
