Are you wondering if civil engineering has a good future?

It is a good situation for you leading forward.?

In this video we're talking about three key reasons why I believe it is the case coming

up right now.

Hey 1% nation, I'm Jake Voorhees and you were watching Episode 042 of the 1 % Engineer show.

Where empower young engineers to rise to the top 1% of their career.

If you're a young engineer, make sure you subscribe, because I release videos three

times per week on engineering success.

And if you have a specific question about succeeding in engineering.

Comment below and I can make you a video just on that.

All of you know I myself am a civil engineer and I'm going to weigh in on this topic and

a lot of this video has to do with what just happened in the United States last weekend.

Hurricane Harvey smashed into the Houston metropolitan area creating ridiculous amounts

of damage and affecting literally millions of people.

And that is reason number one why I believe civil engineering has a good future.

Natural disasters will always plague our major cities no matter where we are in the world.

And we will have to repair and maintain our infrastructure for ever.

Even if we see no more population growth and no more advanced technologies into infrastructure

and buildings and bridges and theirs and everything like this we will still need to repair.

We will still need to maintain and we cannot control what happens via hurricanes and mudslides

and tornadoes and forest fires they will always always destroy the stuff we have built because

Mother Nature is a ridiculous force of energy and there is no way to avoid it.

And I do want to talk a lot about Harvey and the engineering ramifications that a storm

that an event like this has on our country on our cities like Houston.

Most of the Houston area received over 40 inches of rain and in some cumulation areas

fifty two inches of rainfall.

We're talking about the greatest storm that Texas has ever seen.

And Harvey has set records for the most precipitation a cyclone has ever dumped on the contiguous

United States ever.

Seventeen thousand rescues were made.

Over 30000 people were displaced from their homes and over 60 people have died so far.

It is a tragic tragic very very sorry event.

I cannot believe what has happened there in Houston.

So my prayers go out to all the families all the people who have been affected by this.

I do know some engineers who are actually living in Houston right there.

My buddy Max Schmidt is safe and well so I'm so so happy.

I've been thinking of him this entire time.

And hats off to all of you.

Engineers down there in Texas.

And Martin and Fernando symbiotes you guys are down there you're not in the Houston area

but you are in Texas and I know you're doing everything you can to raise funds and support

the area.

So thank you guys for that.

But the reason why this is very significant for this video is that it's not just Houston

that is seeing crazy flooding right now or the rest of the summer here in 2017.

Bangladesh and India the death count is now up to 12 hundred people due to flooding this

year.

Nigeria has seen a displacement of about 100000 people.

Nepal has had.

Eighty thousand homes damaged and around 140 deaths.

Sierra Leone has seen mudslides that have killed over 500 people this summer.

So it's not just Texas guys all around the world we are seeing insane natural disasters.

I'm not going to start talking about global warming.

I'm not going to start talking about designs to prevent these.

What I do want to talk about is the fact that civil engineers and engineers in general are

required to repair and maintain this infrastructure.

So I really do believe that me as a civil engineer and job security is strong because

of this we're always going to have to clean up what Mother Nature has done.

We're always going to have to fix the things so this alone natural disasters is a massive

massive reason why we're always going to need people like me around people like civil engineers.

All of you 1 percent civil engineers so I believe that the industry is strong.

So that's the main purpose for this video to talk about Harvey and to talk about yes

in this huge tragedy we do see death and I am very sorry to witness this but engineers

have to go and clean up the rubble and fix things and get society back to normal and

fix these roads and with the support of FEMA save as many people's homes as we possibly

can and continue to save as many people's lives as we possibly can.

But we have to clean up dust ourselves off and rebuild.

And that's where the engineers come in.

We will see a huge amount of projects bikes and infrastructure development in that area.

So we just need to get back to work.

The second reason why civil engineering has a strong future is that we see about 80 million

new people on this planet each year we're growing at about 1.1 percent.

Population growth per year on the planet is peaking and about 1960s we're talking post-World

War II era when things were positive in the world and money was flowing very freely.

But still we're adding 80 million people per year.

So more buildings more roads more cars more jobs more everything has to occur.

So we will continually have to build.

And this means more for civil engineers which is job security guys and resume are three

was civil engineering has a good future is that we're always coming out with new technologies

new procedures new ways of producing steel and concrete blocks in our 3-D printing buildings

and things like this.

So we are constantly in this perpetual cycle of things falling into obsolescence things

becoming older and we need to use new techniques we need to use new technologies we need to

deploy new ways of creating bridges and creating buildings.

So we're constantly in a situation where we need to sweep away old techniques and gradually

build better buildings better bridges better infrastructure in general.

So not only do we have population growth not only do we have crazy natural disasters that

destroy things and we have to rebuild.

We're always looking for opportunities to build things better than before.

So it will be stronger safer last longer and everything like this guys.

So those are the top three reasons why civil engineering has a good future.

If you're a civil engineer or you're an engineer in general comment below and let me know what

you think about this video what you agree with what you disagree with.

And if you like this video guys if you're a young engineer make sure you subscribe because

I release videos three times per week for engineering students success.

Thanks for watching the 1% engineer show guys stay hungry on your quest on the water.

8 Things You Shouldn't Say To An Introvert - Duration: 7:25.

8 Things You Shouldn't Say To An Introvert.

As an introverted, you might have an experience on of these: your teachers told you to speak

up more in class.

Your extroverted friend sighs audibly when you say you want to stay in tonight.

Your Co-workers marvel at the fact that you like eating your lunch alone.

Actually, that's a pretty common problems for introverted.

In fact people often mistakenly think that we'd be happier if we acted more extroverted,

so they try to "fix" us by encouraging us to perk up, speak up, and go out more.

But the answer isn't for introverts to fight their nature but rather to work with it.

Don't get me wrong.

I'm not saying introverts are "special snowflakes" and they should be coddled or

tiptoed around.

But many people don't realize that the offhand things they say to introverts can end up making

them feel self-conscious.

Introverts might start believing there's really something wrong with them and retreat

into their "shells" even more.

So, without further ado, here are 8 things you shouldn't say to an introvert.

Be sure to like this video and subscribe our channel so you won't miss any interesting

update in the future guys.

If you are an introverted, don't forget to leave a comments down below to clarify if

these things are very familiar with you in some ways.

1.

"Why are you so quiet?"

We already know we're quiet—we've been hearing this our whole lives.

Sometimes people replace the word "quiet" with "shy" but the effect is still the

same.

Pointing out our quietness makes us feel self-conscious.

It's like dragging one of our perceived flaws on stage when we were trying to keep

it bound and gagged in the other room, hoping you wouldn't notice.

We feel our quietness has harmed us at certain times, like when we tried to woo a date or

impress a potential employer on a job interview.

It's something we've tried to overcome, but we're naturally more internal than external,

so we've gotten mixed results.

Would you be embarrassed if we pointed out that you talk a lot?

If you want us to open up, ask us questions to draw us out.

Introverts crave connections with others, but sometimes we have trouble starting conversations.

Once you get us talking about a topic we care about, we may talk your ear off.

2.

"Get out of your head.

You think too much."

Thinking is what we do best.

Never tell me not to think.

As an introvert, my brain is my greatest asset and the most effective tool in my arsenal.

I can focus alone for long periods of time, imagine many outcomes for any given scenario,

and mull things over until I understand them deeply.

Introverts' brains are actually designed for deep processing.

When information enters an introvert's brain, it travels a long, slow route through the

brain, passing through areas related to long-term memory, planning, learning, and reasoning.

Compare this to extroverts, who favor a shorter brain pathway that is linked to working memory

and immediate action, explains Marti Olsen Laney in her book, The Introvert Advantage:

How Quiet People Can Thrive in an Extrovert World.

So telling an introvert to stop thinking is like telling them to stop breathing.

3.

"Spit it out!"

Do you know why introverts "umm" and "ahh" when they speak?

And why they may take longer than extroverts to respond?

It's because introverts tend to use long-term memory more than short-term or "working"

memory, writes Laney.

For extroverts, it's the opposite.

Just like it sounds, long-term memory stores information for long periods of time.

It takes longer to access long-term memory.

When introverts are speaking, they have to reach into long-term memory to pull out just

the right word.

Compare this with working memory, which stores information "up front," making it quickly

accessible.

The best way to access long-term memory is to relax and let your mind wander for a moment.

Telling introverts to "spit it out" or "hurry up and just say it" puts the pressure

on, which just makes word retrieval harder.

4.

"You should get out more."

When people ask what I did last weekend and I didn't have any big social plans, I'm

tempted to make up something so I seem more "normal."

For me, often the best weekend plans (after a long work week) are no plans at all.

As an introvert, downtime is crucial to my well-being.

It's how I relax and recharge.

Extroverts need occasional downtime too, but introverts need more of it.

5.

"Just wing it.

It will be fine."

We all remember that one extrovert in school who got up in front of the class, and although

it was obvious he put minimal effort into his presentation, he charmed his way to an

A. Meanwhile, nervous introverted students were studying their notes for the billionth

time.

Not all introverts will agree with this one, but in general, introverts like being prepared,

especially when something involves speaking or performing in front of others.

If you've ever had someone tell you to just "wing" a class presentation, you may have

felt a flood of panic.

Speaking in front of others means all the attention is zeroed in on you.

Planning what to say removes the pressure of having to think on the fly.

Wanting to feel prepared applies to social situations too.

Introverts feel more comfortable when they know exactly who is going to the party, what

to expect, and when it's acceptable for them to leave.

This helps us create a mental "map" of the situation and get into the right mindset

for socializing.

6.

"You're not saying much.

Are you okay?"

Just because I'm not talking doesn't mean I'm angry, bored, or depressed.

I probably just don't have anything to say right now.

7.

"If only you would come out of your shell."

Introverts tend to be private and reserved, and that's okay, writes Susan Cain in Quiet:

The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking: "You might have been prodded

to come out of your shell—that noxious expression which fails to appreciate that some animals

naturally carry shelter everywhere they go, and that some humans are just the same."

Interestingly, once an introvert feels comfortable with you, their shell cracks wide open and

their true personality comes out.

8.

"Just get over it."

People say this when introverts express concerns about socializing or doing things that drain

them.

But being an introvert is about processing the world differently and creating energy

by being alone.

So introversion isn't something we will ever really be "over."

And we shouldn't have to be.

Well, that's the 8 things you shouldn't say to an introvert.

Really cool information isn't it?

5 Reasons to NOT Buy a Gas Station - Duration: 7:47.

Here at Franchise City the vast majority of calls we get from investors are for Subway,

Gas Stations or a 7-11.

Now all of us here are also franchise and business owners - but how many of us own a

Subway, a 7-11 or a Gas Station?

The answer is zero.

So I'll leave that to your imagination why.

Now I did once know a broker who owned a gas station in a great location.

It was worth about 2 million dollars.

So let me begin by saying if you can afford a gas station in a great location, and these

don't come up for sale very often because they are good moneymakers, you could conisder

buying it.

But good location and traffic gas stations are rare and typically sell for over 1 million.

What people are usually calling us about however is one of the "great deals" they saw on Bizbuysell

or a similar website.

You can see here how many are for sale some of them as low as $13,000.

And armed with exactly zero business knowledge they speak with the seller who tells them

how much potential there is in the business, and how they have to sell because of a sick

parent back home, or how another business is taking up their time, but for the right

person this location is a goldmine!

You, the buyers eyes light up and you write a check envisioning going on cruises as your

gas station back in the USA pumps out the cash.

Of course once you actually invest you quickly discover the downsides of running a gas station

franchise.

Well hopefully I can give you the other side of the story.

We hear the downsides often from people who bought these franchises and now want to sell

them, often at a loss just to get out.

There is good and bad to every story, the seller gave you all the good now lets give

you the bad and you can make a decision from there.

Lets start with an interesting statistic.

According to the NACS 2017 Retail Fuels Report, 59% of gas stations in the U.S. are one owner-operated.

They own one store and often that store is attended by the owner.

That type of business is what we call buying a job.

The owners aren't working in the business because it makes so much money they are workimng

there because they have to.

Also interesting to note is that most major oil companies have sold off all or most of

their fuel station holdings.

Do you think you as a small business buyer have more market knowledge than the best business

minds hired by the oil companies?

Big oil is getting out of gas stations that should be a warning sign as should the huge

number of single store owner operators.

Many of these are struggling business owners making a living on very small margins.

Which bring us to the next point

1.

Small Margins.

Here is a great infographic from the Orange County Register on where $50 spent at the

pump goes.

$30.75 to the oil company, $7.00 to the refineries, $6.00 on taxes, $4.00 to the delivery company,

$1.25 on processing and transaction fees and finally right at the end of the chain you

get $1.00.

And that number can and does change sometimes even lower most owners suggesting an average

of 1-3 cents net per gallon.

If you speak with gas station owners as we do or even just visit forums and chatrooms

with actual gas station owners most will tell you the gas is just a way to get people to

the location and they actually make their money on cigarettes, soft drinks, coffee,

and snack foods.

But a huge problem today is more and more gas buyers are paying at the pump and not

even entering the store making it even less profitable.

But you will still have non driving walk in traffic leading us to reason #2 - rough customers

2.

Most cheap gas stations are located in less than desirable neighborhoods and open 24 hours

a day.

And lets face it most gas stations are often frequented by some interesting people particularly

in the late and early morning hours.

We all watch Youtube and see some of the crazy stuff that happens in convenience stores and

gas stations.

That will also be happening to you - is that something you want to deal with?

Ask your seller if they have ever had any issues where they had to call the police,

and Google the address and see if any crime reports come up.

There are over 7000 robberies each year at gas stations and 15,000 at conveniece stores

which is disproportionate in relation to other businesses.

3.

Franchising.

Now there are many situations where the franchising model works.

In my opinion gas is not one of them.

In fact if you are at the mercy of buying only one companies gas at a fixed price, being

unable to shop for better pricing, stuck with every promotion they decide on as well as

having to pay franchise royalties and fees with your already slim margins, being profitable

can be difficult.

4.

Environmental issues. This is a problem specific to gas stations.

Are the tanks leaking?

If so the cost of cleanup can be costly.

Many unwary buyers found themselves on the hook for huge bills because they chose to

survey only assets that were above ground.

5.

At the mercy of potential construction.

Some unethical sellers pull a fast one and after determing that weeks or months of construction

will make thier location inaccessible put it on the market.

Always check with the local department of transportation prior to making an offer on

a gas station.

Or any business for that matter.

Now in closing yes I understand that gas stations and convenience stores CAN be a good business

or franchise.

In these videos I provide the negative side because as we all know the seller is only

giving you the good side.

An business decision that has considered both the bad and the good is an educated one.

Don't forget to like and subscribe and leave your business and franchising questions down

What Happens in an Internet Minute? - Duration: 3:29.

We spend a lot of time talking about Amazon and stand by our prediction

that the Seattle firm will be the first $1 trillion market capitalization firm.

But today let's take a look at how one company is responding: Walmart.

Online sales grew 60% in the second quarter.

Impressive, but even more impressive is what they've been able to accomplish culturally.

They've taken a page from Amazon's playbook and become master storytellers.

Most firms want to under-promise and over-deliver.

However that doesn't work in a digital age

where it's all about the vision:

drones and car production volumes that are impossible to meet are the flavor of the day.

The retailer made 15-plus major digital announcements in the past year,

touting acquisitions, omnichannel investments and reorganizations,

signaling to the Street: hey, we're in the game as well.

They've also been vocal about killing things and aren't afraid to tell the Street when things are not working.

All of these announcements collectively paint Walmart as visionary

and shift the focus away from the Seattle retailer

and fix the market's gaze on an old lover from a simpler, more nostalgic time.

A winner: Giphy, or is it Jiffy? Giffy or Jiffy?

I don't know.

The 40-year-old GIF search engine has 200 million daily active users

who watch over 4 million hours of GIFs every day.

To put that in perspective, Snapchat has 173 million daily active users.

The company's raised $150 million and is valued at $600 million but is not yet profitable

although they are trying to change that by rolling out sponsored GIFs.

Giphy seems to be doing a lot right:

not just creating a huge repository of content, but also executing an effective search strategy,

forging impressive partnerships and engaging a massive network of users.

Giphy gets how young people communicate.

What happens in an internet minute?

50 voice-first devices are shipped, 342,000 apps are downloaded,

Facebook registers 900,000 logins and 15,000 GIFs are sent via its messenger app.

What has changed most dramatically since 2016?

Video usage has exploded across social platforms

with consumers watching 4 million YouTube videos per minute

in another forward-looking indicator of the death of the broadcast television industrial complex.

Snapchat shares have grown threefold since last year to 1.8 million per minute.

And what hasn't changed? The number of emails sent,

Spotify plays, Tinder swipes and Netflix hours viewed are relatively flat.

And my internet minute?

We'll see you next week.

This is what we should do, we should have an animation and it should be a pie, "Scott's Internet Minute," it should be Wikipedia, NPR,

NYU Stern, The Economist, National Geographic,

to like this slightly tiny, like this little like half a percent slice, it zooms back,

and it's like this size, it's like a sliver.

Genius!

excited with how the whitewash turned out so we're just gonna go check out the

last cut

that will go there. pretty stoked on that

see the faucets coming tomorrow another beautiful day

I got the whole day to work on the van as for the cabinet design I kept it very

similar to what we did in the kitchen this time I actually removed the top

board and now we're going to do the door so I really like this design that we did

here it worked really well these hinges were a little bit pricey but they're

pretty impressive so if I hold that thing pulley up so you just lift it and I

this is tongue and groove probably going to piece together then cut out that shape and

mount it on there

It's tile day!

Wow we're flying that's 4 rows of tile yeah I know it's going up real quick okay

guys we're on to wall number two look look at the first of all this is so

brutal this is definitely not the way to do it we've done a tiny section here and we're

just trying to read what to do next the excess grout from the tile surface

shape joints to be full and smooth oh here we go yeah if it doesn't look

pretty over there but just wipe it off afterwards and you get a nice clean

detailed finish little afternoon bed frame session this section over here will slide in so

we're spacing it evenly okay I'll show them these boards will slide in like

that do a situation right now van's pretty dusty but hey would you look at

that structure so this is something I built last night but my camera was dead which

is classic this is just a box a very structurally sound box your bed slides

which I think I showed you in the last shot slide out and will rest along

there

awesome huge drawer that's 24 inches width and I think I've

got about 34 height we are starting to work on the kitchen the under kitchen the

under kitchen the under the counter took me a few tries to get the you know the

right fit but overall pretty happy with the way it came out

I've just been firing holes in our bloody new counter so far this

one's worked out nice we are now working on the leaning structure that goes

beside the bed the last compartment section let's see

it is Sunday May something beginning of May I think it's the 6th or

7th or 8th or something like that

just made this nice face for the drawer we're

gonna have a handle here so we're gonna pull that out and it comes all the way

out as you can see we we decided to go with 2-95 amp our 12-volt batteries we've

got a 2000 watt inverter MPPT charge controller and display the battery box

is coming along starting to take shape there and it's pretty

solid eh Bob what do you say? "rock-solid"

the inverter is in the batteries are

mounted we actually ended up this working really well is cutting this kind

of black stuff out cuz it gave us the exact clearance we need we've got an

absolute beauty day today today is like the 24 we've been working on the van

it's a nice solid piece of pine for the top there it's been notched out so the

bed still slides in into the groove and I just roughly stand to the edges so

they weren't sharp what did i do today I built this cool little box that's

gonna be doubled as a toilet as well as a garbage well mainly a garbage and

then an emergency toilet I also got this piece done I'm really happy with it I

just got to paint that up it's gonna be a little ventilation maybe a screen on

the inside there oh these drawers you gotta get pretty technical with them

you know if you're off by even a eighth of an inch we're gonna run into issues

sometimes I think you guys are going to think we did this build in one day because

we're always wearing the same thing

these are custom brackets for the Vitamix blender they're just going to

support along the two cabinets we got 2 of them to hold it up and then we're

drilling right into the bottom of the Vitamix

we have successful not we I can't pretend I did anything we've installed

this beauty hold for the Vitamix here trying to get these drawers done using a

quarter inch plywood with some of this one and a half inch MDF just to trim it

nicely we've got one here that guy's gonna go on there

paint day here we are at the shop

I'm painting the under the sink cupboard drawers everything's white

this is hopefully the last week of the build we are coming along nicely and I

wanted to show you guys the plumbing situation

so this is our gray water tank and super easy to change out because you can just

literally pull that unclip it slide the whole thing out and this is our

freshwater tank so we've five gallons of fresh five

gallons of gray and then two extra five gallons in the little cubby there

we tried to use recycled wood as much as possible I told my dad I've

been looking for something to use as the table so he just bounced this piece here

it's gonna work perfect

wood's lookin nice we planed we sanded we went down to 220 grit so it's got a

nice smooth finish still rustic I'm gonna leave it natural so I'm just using

these these are actually spring T hinges I think it's for it gate I'm very

excited about this guy's nice finish we just use like a gate latch there and it

works really well just pop that open now fold down we got very thin vinyl floor

and to start the process we've just cleaned the whole area give it a good

vacuum

this guy's looking like a pro and the key to laying a floor is obviously

quarter round that just cleans it up real nice so we're just discussing whether we're

gonna have a pizza party and stay and work all night because

someone's a work-aholic

it's there so to actually mount the panel I'm just using self-tapping screws

and I'm going right in this is easier because I've got the angle

into the two side so the side of this angle iron and the side of the solar panel

today is Monday

we're working on the power so I've got the batteries hooked up we got the charge

controller producing power we've got our display with a happy face we just

got our mattress sorted and wanted to show you guys what we're doing here

there's a place up the road that sells mattresses and we actually just got a

few off cuts which worked out perfect so it looks like in couch mode and I just

want to show them the slats so you just lift that up the whole thing slides away

just like that and then why don't you show off the hallway buddy that's not the hallway

extra room that I can't wait for think it'll be great once we hit the road
