Hello.
I'm Lihoo.
I'll try to talk about the reason
I've been continuously stressed for 8 long years.
I talked about it in another video I've made, but it was
short and I wanted to take more time to talk about it.
Usually hearing people can listen (ears), talk (voice),
read and write without particular difficulties and
There is sign language for Deaf people.
So I have one question to ask hearing people like you.
When you were students and
that you had to take a test (midterms, finals)
Did all the students in your class get 100%?
Of course not. Right?
Same for Deaf people.
There are also Deaf people that are not that confident about their sign language skills
Whether not that bad or
good there are also "normal skilled" Deaf,
And some that just can't use sign language.
Naturally there are diverse language skills for Deaf.
As for hearing people that are experts in some fields
There are Deaf people
that specialized in sign language,
Instructors that are specializing
in sign language teaching and many others.
So when it comes to deafness,
many don't correctly know
about signing
and deaf culture.
Even though I am part of the sign language community
and because I speak through signs,
LIHOO TV is not going to be adequate for
those who want to learn sign language.
The reason I'm often looking down
Is because I prepared a script to
avoid unintentional mistakes.
In 2011,
When I wanted to know about
*Deaf* identity.
I entered the University of Sign Language Interpretation Department.
However at a school for Deaf,
we learned nothing about culture and history of the Deaf.
This was not a place that tought Deafs' human rights.
This is just a normal school.
Same for hearings.
Just like when you study abroad,
foreigners don't learn everything about Korea at school.
Through "Suneung" conditions (korean baccalaureate) you get grades
that can make you happy and allows you to enter the university of your choice.
That is usually the wish of most people.
Deaf school is also a place where we learn.
Among the deaf,
there are sometimes people who think
that facial expressions are important when signing.
Hm... facial expressions...
Indeed, it's important.
But,
Facial expressions and
NMS(non-manual signals)
are quite different.
I will explain about those later.
Also...
Deaf society is very narrow
and not widespread.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
Deaf people make up 0.52%
of the total population.
Among deaf people how many identify as Deaf?
Even less.
This is not just in Korea,
but world-wide.
Deaf world-wide, know about
the famous college named Gallaudet University
Located in Washington D.C.
My friend was curious as to
what all the students were
gathered to watch.
It was a movie that I appeared in.
It was very interesting to hear that.
Deaf society is that narrow.
Because of that,
I need to be careful how I speak.
Since I liked acting and had good luck,
I was able to be in a movie,
But amongst Deaf and hearing,
I was labeled as the Deaf actor.
When I heard that label, I had an awkward feeling.
On the other hand,
hearing actors are just called actors.
The label of "hearing" isn't attached to them.
However because I am Deaf, the label of Deaf is emphasized...
Hmmm... This feeling...
There isn't equality...?
Isn't there a little feeling of discrimination?
Anyway... there isn't anything that can be done about that.
Since there is just one word for Deaf
Everyone sees me
as the representative for all Deaf
No matter what I say
even if it's my own personal thought,
It could be misunderstood as what all Deaf think...
I feel a great urden because of that.
Therefore I worried for a long 8 years
and only started my videos this year.
So..
even thought the burden is big,
I don't want to quit and
I want to
continue uploading these videos until they are done.
So please
continue to be interested in the future.
That's all I have to say for now.
That's good.
It's not that long also.
