Time to Get to Work You have been called up to your boss' office.
He tells you that he has a special project for you that only you can do, but you think
it is over your head.
You don't think you're ready.
But your boss smiles and sends you on your way anyway.
Stay with us as we talk about the mission God has for each one of us.
The Verse of the Day is Acts 1:8 which says: "But you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth."

Our address in on our web site.
Last week we talked about being the church.
We talked about doing more than just attending a church service, but actually serving others
in a church setting and in our homes, neighborhoods, and work places.
We talked about that being the best way to earn the right to share Jesus with others.
We also shared the great commission as recorded by Matthew.
Jesus told us to go into all the world making disciples and baptizing them in the name of
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
That sure sounds like a big job.
That sounds like too much for one person.
You may even be thinking that you don't even know where to start.
Those are all valid thoughts and comments and we're going to break that down and chat
about that today.
First, as soon as we say yes to Jesus' call, we are put into service.
Now that doesn't necessarily mean that you say yes to Jesus one day and then a week later
you are leading a church group or cell site in your home.
But one of the first things we need to do after saying yes to Jesus and starting to
follow him is to tell someone.
Jesus sent his disciples out a couple of times.
They had watched him preach and teach.
They had seen him heal the lame, give sight to the blind, and hearing to the deaf.
They saw the dead raised.
But then he sent them out.
Let's read Luke 9:1-6 Luke 9:1-6 When Jesus had called the Twelve
together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,
(2) and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
(3) He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra
shirt.
(4) Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.
(5) If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a
testimony against them."
(6) So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and
healing people everywhere.
The first thing you must understand about this passage is in the first verse.
In Jesus' time in Israel, a master could commission his servants for tasks and they operated with
the full weight and authority of their master.
In fact, Jewish law allowed messengers to fully act with complete legal authority to
the extent of their commission.
So, we read Jesus gave the disciples the power and authority to drive out all demons and
cure diseases.
The disciples could legally speak in Jesus' name and it is just as good as if Jesus was
speaking.
We believe this stands true in the spiritual realm as well.
What the disciples commanded in Jesus' name, that had to be done.
They had the authority in Jesus' name to drive out demons and heal the sick.
Wow!
He then told them to proclaim the kingdom of God and heal the sick.
So the disciples set out with the full authority of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to heal the
sick, drive out demons, and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God.
Because they were speaking and acting in the name of Jesus, the demons had to flee, the
sick were healed, and the kingdom of God was preached from village to village.
This isn't the only time Jesus sent out disciples though.
He also at another time sent out 72 disciples.
Look at Luke 10:1-9 Luke 10:1-9 After this the Lord appointed
seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where
he was about to go.
(2) He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.
(3) Go!
I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
(4) Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
(5) "When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.'
(6) If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will
return to you.
(7) Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his
wages.
Do not move around from house to house.
(8) "When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.
(9) Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
The first mission trip, so to speak, of the twelve must have been successful.
A chapter later we read that Jesus sent out another 72 to the villages ahead of him.
He gives them similar instructions as he did the 12 earlier and tells them to go and heal
the sick who are there and tell the kingdom of God has come near you.
The mission is picking up steam here.
People are getting saved, that is, they are saying yes to Jesus and following him.
More and more villages are hearing the good news of the kingdom of God.
More and more people are being healed.
Demons are being cast out of people everywhere.
The world is changing and the spiritual realm is being impacted too.
But it doesn't end there.
It continues today.
We are all called, commissioned, and sent out.
That's what the great commission is all about.
Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and earth and he is telling us to go and make
disciples.
He doesn't just give us those words though.
Look at Acts 1:8 Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Jesus has commissioned us.
He has given us his instructions and we are his messengers speaking with his full authority.
We are literally speaking for Jesus in his name.
What are we supposed to say?
What are we supposed to do?
We are to make disciples by being witnesses.
To be a witness you tell people what you have personally seen, heard, and experienced.
Tell people what Jesus has done in your life.
Share with them the moment you had your
encounter with Jesus and how your life has changed.
Pray with people and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God with the boldness that
comes from the Holy Spirit.
Cast out demons in Jesus' name.
You may not think you are ready for this, but Jesus wouldn't call you if you weren't
ready.
The Holy Spirit will give you the words and the insight you need to make a difference
in people's lives.
The Holy Spirit will give you the power and equipping you need to meet people's needs.
Friends, God has chosen you and has equipped you.
We want to help to.
If you have questions about sharing Jesus with others, let us know.
If you need advice or counsel on meeting the needs of people and ministering to them, let
us know.
We are here for you.
We are even working on some online courses that you can take to help better prepare you
to serve people in Jesus' name as you connect with them at work, school, home, or the neighborhood.
Watch for these in the coming months.
In the meantime, know that Jesus would not call you if he hadn't already equipped you
for the task.
Thanks for joining us today.
We are so glad you took a few minutes out of your busy day to spend it with us.
Don't forget our trip to Africa.
If you have ties or scarves to send with us as gifts, please send them our way.
