The Hiltons: Success Story of an American Dynasty - Duration: 3:39.
- I just got finished reading this book,
The Hiltons: The True Story of an American Dynasty,
and wanted to give my review of it.
So, the book is the story of Hilton Hotels,
started all the way back in the early 1900s.
Conrad Hilton's this entrepreneur who lived
through the Depression, had three or four hotels
throughout the early part of the 1900s.
Had to go through World War II and the Great Depression.
Lost everything, and had to rebuild it from scratch.
Then the book goes through the rest of his family,
what happened to his kids, what happened to his kids' kids.
All the way up to modern day Hiltons like Paris Hilton.
First interesting takeaway from this book
was how resilience pays off.
One of the initial things Conrad talks about
is during the 1920s when he was initially
building up his hotel empire, everything was booming.
Everyone was getting loans, capital was super cheap.
It was very easy to build at that time
and get loans at that time.
What happened, though, during the Great Depression
is a lot of people couldn't cover their bills
and people started foreclosing on their hotels.
Like a lot of the other hoteliers
just got knocked out of business.
But during all this,
Conrad made sure to keep paying his bills.
Like even just the minimum payment and banks worked with him
because everyone else was defaulting.
But what that meant is, yeah,
his empire shrunk considerably.
He even had to borrow money from one of his bellboys
to pay some bill that he was owed.
But after the depression was over,
all of the bankers and all these people
that were loaning money saw that everybody defaulted
except for Conrad Hilton.
And that's what unlocked the capital that allowed him
to expand right after the Great Depression was over.
The other part of the story goes through
what Conrad's two sons did.
One was a screw up, like alcoholic.
He was marrying a bunch of celebrities but he was
partying super hard, ended up actually killing himself.
And then the other brother took over the entire empire,
used every opportunity he had to actually take over
the Hilton empire and grow it to new heights.
But the most important thing I learned from that struggle,
there were actually three brothers
but two of them were doing the hotel stuff,
was use opportunities.
A lot of us are born into great situations.
If you're living in America,
you're lucky you weren't born in somewhere else.
Like my cofounder Robert's out in Romania,
where the average salary is about 500 dollars U.S. a month
and the top salary for an engineer is $1500 a month.
So if you make more than $500 a month,
you're average in that entire country.
So that's huge and using those opportunities is huge.
So it's interesting to see two people
in the exact same situation, both sons
of a future billionaire, or one of the richest people,
one of the most successful people in the hotel business.
It's interesting to see one of them
use the opportunity and become an even richer guy
and then the other one completely squander the opportunity
and end up killing himself.
And the last thing I learned from this book
was how everything comes full circle.
The final scene in the book, and this is a spoiler alert,
but it's a nonfiction book so I think that's okay.
The last scene of the book is Paris Hilton walking out
of a restaurant with her grandfather Barron Hilton.
Who, actually, Donald Trump named his son Barron
after Barron Hilton for a business deal.
Which is actually all outlined in the book,
it's super interesting.
But she's walking out of the restaurant
and all the paparazzi are on top of her
like taking pictures and all this stuff,
she's posing for them.
And the book goes into detail
about how Paris Hilton's business status,
her rise as the only Hilton in the new generation,
except for maybe her sister, that's gotten to any sort
of success is actually due to her
acting exactly like Conrad.
She uses her appeal and her personality
the same way that Conrad uses his prowess
to get hotels early on.
And she uses that to get fame later in life,
and it's just very full circle.

Ozone.
High up in the atmosphere, it serves as a shield to filter out deadly radiation from
the sun.
But the two faced gas can cause a wide range of health problems if it's on the groud level.
The nation's growing yet often overlooked air pollution and the health risks it can
cause.
That's our newsfeatures tonight, with Lee Unshin.
(standup) With scorching hot days and sticky tropical
nights behind us, summer is coming to a close.
But the season's warmth will stay around for a bit longer, as Korea's expected to have
a monthly average temperature of some 20 degrees Celsius throughout September.
With that, also lingering from summer is one of its seasonal threats.
Ozone gas is formed when sunlight causes nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, known
as VOCs, to react in the air.
These chemicals come from many sources, like cars, factories, and consumer products.
More than 90-percent of the Earth's ozone stays in the stratosphere, protecting us from
harmful UV radiation.
Nearer the ground, however, the chemical compound is not welcome.
(Korean) "When the ozone concentration reaches what's
considered a 'harmful' level, we send out alerts.
Because it's a gas, masks don't help.
When the alerts are sent, usually between late Spring and early Fall, around 2 to 6
p.m., it's important to try to stay indoors."
The nation's environmental research institute keeps an eye on the ever-changing pollution
levels.
When the 8-hour mean exceeds 90 parts-per-billion, an ozone advisory is displayed on digital
boards across some 20 cities and provinces.
But the symptoms of 'ozone sickness' are often overlooked.
(Korean)
"I work mostly outdoors but I've never cared about the ozone level."
(Korean)
"I see the alerts but I don't know how to protect myself."
(Korean)
"I know that high levels of ozone are bad, but I don't know what specific damage it causes."
Doctors warn against the effects of the invisible threat.
Extended exposure to ozone can cause eye inflammation, and inhaling excessive amounts can lead to
nausea, chest pain... and even respiratory damage.
(Korean) "Generally those with allergies, conjunctivitis
or asthma are considered particularly vulnerable to exposure to ozone,... along with infants,
toddlers and pregnant women."
Korea saw the harmful gas steadily increase over the past two decades.
Less than 100 ozone advisories were issued before 2012,... but now the number has surpassed
2-hundred-40.
(Korean) "Ground level ozone is forecast to increase.
To counter this, we need to track down which chemical substances among nitrogen oxides
and VOCs are the main cause, and reduce the amounts of those chemicals... along with countermeasures
to deal with a prolonged warm climate."
Even now, the system isn't considered ideal.
Korea's ceiling for the "normal" ozone range, 90 ppb, exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's standard of 70 ppb, and WHO's guideline of 50.
(Korean) "These standards were built to safeguard th
e particularly vulnerable, such as patients with chronic respiratory or pulmonary conditions.
Korea could also use a renewed policy direction for the pollution matter, aimed to cater for
those people."
Unlike particulate matter, known to cause long-term damage and even cancer, ozone does
not accumulate in one's body, so is considered less deadly.
Still, in-depth studies across the globe into other health risks of the highly-irritating
gas are on-going, alongside the traveling pollution's geopolitical impact.
So as researchers suggest, why risk further problems later on, when safety nets can be
made beforehand?

And today we're rolling out a new version of our desktop website.
Let's talk about that.
So here's the new homepage.
As you might notice, following Material Design, we revamped the overall design system to be
cleaner and simpler.
To really let the content shine through.
We also introduced infinite scrolling, making browsing easier - you no longer need to click to see more videos.
You might wonder where we put all the stuff
we originally had in our footer.
We consolidated all our user settings in one place - the new Account Menu.
We wanted to make the new Account Menu the home for everything about you, including your
channels and all your settings.
One brand new setting we're introducing is the Dark Theme.
This has been requested by users for a long time and now you can activate it from the
new Account Menu to cut down on glare and take in the true colors of the videos you watch.
Let's walk you through other parts of the site, like the Channel page.
The new channel page is designed to be more immersive, with more focus on the creator.
Alright, so now let's talk about the Watch page.
Like other parts of the site, we've cleaned it up so that focus is just on the video and the content.
If you want a greater immersion, we've updated the Theater mode to be larger and with a dark header.
Finally, we've also updated Transcripts, so that users with education or accessibility
needs can watch the video and read along at the same time.
Under the hood, we rebuilt the site from scratch on a fast and modern framework we call Polymer.
It means that our users can enjoy watching videos faster, and as an extra bonus we can
now introduce new features we couldn't build before, such as Dark Theme and many more yet
to come.

this has been a typical day, where usually we start a little bit earlier than than we did today

deal with a constituent issue, go visit something
I am first of all making sure that I maximize the August recess to get as much rest as possible

but as you see from today we're still working, we're working with constituent issues when were many things
we're learning things about our district and we'll take those things back with us when Congress comes back
but you know, we've got a debt ceiling to deal with so there are lots of things to keep us busy in September
they are very concerned about Russia, I know right?
because you keep hearing that nobody's concerned about Russia
well my constituency is concerned about Russia
concerned about making sure that we're ready for the 2018 and 2020 election cycles
as well as, was there any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government
I believe that the environment is the most important issue of the 21st century
a lot of folks think it's just about tree hugging
it is most assuredly about tree hugging but it's more than that
it's about being able to build wind turbines in the fourth congressional district
it's about being able to build solar panels
it's about being concerned about sea level rise
by being in the General Assembly and the capital being in Richmond and me being a Richmonder
so there was no commute to deal with the having to drive back and forth to DC can be challenging sometimes

but the job of being a congressman, putting this administration aside, the job of being a congressman is a wonderful job
so I stay in a Hampton Inn, I may have a lead on an apartment when we get back though
