- [Announcer] From the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, Nevada
this is Poker Night in America.
(upbeat poker music)
- Hello and welcome to Poker Night in America.
I'm Chris Hansen along side the silliest adult male
in poker he is Mr. Joseph Stapleton.
- We are bringin' you action from the Golden Nugget
in Las Vegas and I am pumped up.
Chris look at our lineup tonight.
We are stacked, like Baywatch stacked.
- Like the original or that stupid remake
that just came out?
- Chris, they're both amazing thank you.
We've got three main event winners here,
Joe Cada, my old neighbor in Hoboken, Greg Merson,
and da brat, Bill Helmuth.
- Sorry if that was weird, I just wanted to feel it.
- [Chris] And it doesn't stop there
because Maria Ho is here, and my former crush
and subject of many weird dreams, Liv Boeree.
Then there's Bill Lee and everyone's
favorite extraterrestrial, Phil Laak.
- Bill doesn't only brag about himself,
he brags for other people. - Yes.
(Maria Laughing)
- He's like. - It's unlimited.
- It's the, yeah.
- [Chris] A real Who's who at our table today
here for day number one.
We've got World Series of Poker Champions,
and we've got Liv Boeree, hello Liv.
- [Joseph] You know what's amazing about this lineup
is the guy you've never heard of
is the richest one at the table.
(Chris Laughing)
Ever.
- This is recently wasn't it?
- 25 years.
- I'm straddling, Joe, I don't know what I have
I'm just straddling like the rest of you guys are.
- Are you really?
- [Phil] I don't know what I have though.
- You don't know what you have
because you can't see through your goggles.
- No, I haven't looked yet,
but the cards came in.
- [Joseph] Phil's not even talking to Maria,
he's actually talking to another person
because he's playing in a remotely in those goggles.
- [Chris] Phil Laak's entire like is virtual reality.
- [Phil] I hope they're not aces, I'm gonna feel bad,
but the camera's could watch and notice
that I haven't looked yet.
- [Maria] Wow, that would be real sketchy Phil.
- Actually I hope I have aces, because the camera's
can show that I haven't looked this is the first time.
- [Maria] Super sketch.
- [Joe] She just threw that out.
- Uh oh, fortunate to pick up the queens
and the I didn't look yet straddle.
- I'm gonna raise you Maria Ho.
And I have looked.
- You, I am so, no I'm just kidding.
- [Phil] I'm gonna go 800.
- You kinda deserve this
for re-raising. - 800 means the hand's over
or you're committing more to the pot.
One of the two.
(cheering from person in audience)
Oh my God you have Ace, jack don't you.
- What did you start, you started with 10?
- Yeah, if you have ace, jack, I guess
you would probably, it would hurt.
If she has ace, jack.
Okay at least I know what you have.
- That's good right? - That helps a little bit.
Ace, jacks ahead of me but I can
catch-up right now real easy, a lotta work.
Seven, eight, nine with two clubs.
- [Chris] Queen, jack, deuce.
- Oh, we both got a little bit,
I got a little 10 gutter ball for a straight.
You have middle fare. - Good you have some equity,
you're gonna bet, right?
- [Phil] Of course, two green chips.
- [Chris] Set of queens for Phil,
middle pair for Maria. - Denominations.
- [Phil] Jacks might not be good.
As a friend I have to tell you.
- [Joseph] This could be the worst thing that happened
to Maria since that boat ride with Robert Wagner.
It's a West Side Story reference.
See a musical, there's been a musical before LaLa Land.
- [Chris] Yeah, I saw it.
- [Joseph] The one?
- [Chris] I don't know which one you're talking about.
- [Joseph] Well speaking of boats, Phil's got one now.
- [Chris] Starlight Express, I saw that, does that count?
Yes, no? It's and Andrew Lloyd Weber.
- Sure. - Joint, that works.
- [Joseph] I'll give it to ya.
- [Chris] It's pretty sad that the only Broadway musical
I've ever seen is Starlight Express.
- Uh oh, she didn't just instantly muck.
What do you got Maria, you don't have jack do you?
You got a flush though - Do you have any big chips
behind, because I can't. - This is what I have.
- Perfect, okay. - About three.
- Five yep gotcha, thank you.
- If you have a super-big hand, I accept the pain.
I accept it.
If I'm gonna get there, if I'm not there already.
Here, check it out, for you guys at home.
(Greg and Maria laughing)
Does that match up?
- [Greg] You can see in that screen you know.
- It was on the monitor. - It was on the monitor.
(table laughing)
- If you were really sharp you would have known.
- Get out of here. - I'm not doing it anymore.
The days of putting the truth up
in the universe. - I didn't see it.
If I saw it, I promise. - I didn't see it.
- I promise if I could see it I would say something.
But I didn't see it. - I saw it.
- Or I'm just pretending like I didn't see it.
And I'm pretending I have a decision when I know exactly
what I'm gonna do. - Dave Thaler says
you stand up in a hand you get what you need in the end.
So I'm standin' up.
- I feel so leveled right now, I'm kinda confused
to be honest. - You could have been
unleveled, you just looked over at the monitor.
- I know.
- [Phil] I wouldn't stand up without floods.
Or effective.
- [Bill L.] Show the nine four offshoot.
Show the nine four. - Show on.
- You showed the camera already.
- [Chris] Ones gonna be enough for Maria tonight.
She made the right fold.
- [Joseph] The Laak wins our first hand of the night
on Poker Night in America.
- I knew the queen was good.
- [Joseph] Liv straddling, calm down everyone
I mean in the game. - Hey, yeah.
- [Liv] It's absurd because it didn't happen.
- Yeah, hopefully as a old player I'll wake up one day
in some cruel twist of fate.
(chips clicking around table)
- [Chris] We go in five handed to this flop.
Laak the original raiser, called by Merson,
called by Helmuth, called by Lee, called by Boeree.
- I bid up to 14. - Flop is seven, jack, six
a couple of hearts on board.
- [Joseph] One, two, three, four, five,
nobody has a heart draw.
- [Chris] Straight draw for Phil Laak.
- Up and down yeah, okay. - That looks like one of
those multi-way flops. - Check.
- [Chris] Yeah, it was top pair for Merson on the flop.
No longer on the turn.
- Check.
- [Joseph] Merson's still the favorite.
- [Chris] Lot's of free checking to the river.
- Check. - Two pair for Merson
on the river, but that ain't the card he wanted
to see, Bill Lee and Phil Laak both river a straight.
- [Joseph] Laak's got the losing end
Bill Lee's got the business end.
- 22 and a quarter.
- [Chris] I was gonna say, it's pretty tough to know
you're beat here with eight, nine.
You're only losing the king, nine and ace, king.
- I'm all in.
- I'm the worst.
- [Chris] Now it's easier to know you're losing.
- I don't know, I just wanna see it.
- [Chris] I love when a guy like Bill Lee is in the hand.
I really didn't see the hand getting played out this way.
- Oh, I'm a POW.
- [Chris] POW? Prisoner of war?
Piece of work? - Payoff wizard.
(table laughing) (announcers laughing)
- [Chris] Playoff wizrd.
- [Joseph] Phil Laak is the best thing to happen to TV
since the cathode ray tube.
- [Chris] Don't go anywhere, this golden nugget
of a table will be right back.
- [Announcer] How would you like to play
- [Chris] Welcome back to Poker Night in America.
We rejoin the action inside the Golden Nugget.
Poker Night in America brought to you by
Kimo Sabe Mezcal with Joe Stapleton, it's Chris Hansen.
And we're back to the action,
at our 2550 no limit cash game.
- [Bill L.] I've been in the top 10
every year it seems like.
- [Chris] World Series of Poker Champion Joe Cada raises.
World Series of Poker Champ Main Event Champion
Greg Merson folds.
World Series of Poker Main Event Champion
Bill Helmuth folds.
Uber rich guy Bill Lee folds.
Talented and wickedly good poker player Liv Boeree calls.
- That's one of the first things
he told a story about how you got second.
- I oughta punish you. - Stop Merson, stop, Jesus.
- This guy, Billy I'm getting Player of the Year
which I feel like I finished in second three times
I finally got Player of the Year locked up.
- Yup. - It's a big poster,
like life sized poster of the, I need more posters.
(Maria Laughing)
- [Phil] On that side, that was a good one.
- [Maria] Phil never gets tired of looking at me.
- I have a lot of posters from last year.
- But I need it, right, and then he
has to win the main event.
- [Joseph] So, Helmuth is complaining
about losing Player of the Year, the year
the guy sitting right across from him won it.
Greg Merson by absolutely smashing the end of the series
and winning back-to-back bracelets.
- It was announced and then they went back
and said wait a minute, these last events
don't count for whatever reason and we're gonna
give it to fricken Jeff Manson instead.
- That's right. - I won it by their own rules
and they took it away. - I remember that year.
- They said don't worry Phil, you'll win one.
I'm just gonna keep comin'. - Are you gonna take that.
Did you see Doyle's bet wanting to take,
- Todd. - Todd against anybody
in a tournament like that they both play yeah.
You should take that bet.
- I don't bet on or against myself.
Doyle's made a couple million dollars,
all the kids would say, oh, we're better than Phil
we wanna bet you a million, and I'd say
I don't make those bets, but go see Doyle.
- [Maria] Yeah.
- These kids, they think, one or,
they get there once or twice they
think they're good. - I generally try
and not bet with people who have a history of winning.
- I wanna look at me the whole time.
- [Maria] No it's a graphic design.
- [Joseph] Liv raising the nuts, Cada knows he can't call.
(beep)
So much ego, it's all ego.
- OK, good. - Liv wins.
Joe folded, Liv wins.
- [Joseph] And I recognize that, I recognize it right away.
- Okay folks. - I shoulda snap called
the thousand, acted like I had one pair,
and said nice hand, I had a pair.
That's the correct play. - I agree.
- [Phil] And I messed it up, but I
make mistakes daily and I accept that.
- I don't think I mind your raise.
I think you made a good raise.
- Go back to glasses. - Yep.
- I think you made good raise Phil,
I think you made a bad call.
- Yeah, it might be a raise fold,
that could be the super high-level wizard jump.
I'm not emotionally grounded for that stuff.
Two hours per decision?
I think it's on you. - Shut it.
- No, they don't call clocks. - It's a lot of noise.
- It's a lot of noise. - One thousand.
- Take it from all of us. - Wow.
- [Joseph] So, Bill's gonna raise here with bottom pair
which is, in fact, the best hand for now.
- [Chris] Ace on the turn.
King on the river, this hand is Bill Lee's take down.
- Two thousand.
- [Joseph] Phil makes the right fold.
- Can't fold. - Show one.
- No, don't don't don't. - Show the seven
♪ and make me happy.
- I never talk when I play, but I'm like maybe it's like.
- Talking and playing's never been good for me, not.
- [Joseph] That was a not joke worse than Borat.
Is there a way we can pause things right there
and award that worst joke of the week?
- [Liv] He was on to get under Dan Smith's skin.
- Who? - Phil.
- [Joseph] Action on Maria Ho.
Maria been kinda quiet tonight
other than playing that first hand.
- [Chris] She's in now.
- [Phil] I was not trying to get under his skin.
That kid, he's crazy man, he's straight crazy.
I mean like he's a really good player, but.
- [Chris] The flop's top pair and a flush draw.
- Seemed like a. - Pretty.
- I three bet him like three times in like seven hours
and I had it twice, and he moved in every time.
- Maybe you're the crazy one Phil.
- Maybe he had it. - You're the one that's
three betting the nine, deuce, the 10, deuce.
- Yeah you kept having 10, deuce.
- Maybe you're the crazy northern European.
- Right.
(chips clicking)
- [Joseph] Ace, jack high Maria?
- [Chris] Yahtzee, ace of diamonds on the turn
Maria Ho in business, Helmuth drawing dead.
- I think I got bluffed a lot today Phil.
Gary made me fold kings before.
- It's very important to survive
to allow yourself to get bluffed here and there.
You gotta feel okay about it.
- Come one. - Every time you (bleep).
- [Joseph] He might wanna try have
a little bit more of a poker face.
(chips clicking)
- [Phil] Just bettin' and knockin' 'em off.
- [Chris] Statistically speaking when Phil
puts his glasses in his mouth,
he is a 0% win rate in showdown.
- [Phil] Maria Ho bluff-tastic or had it fantastic.
- If she was bluffin' it was a good bluff.
- [Phil] Was it have-it fantastic or bluff-tastic?
- Always have it. - Always have it-tastic.
- [Joseph] Wow, FBT Mueller in the background.
- [Chris] We haven't seen him
on Poker Night in America in years.
- [Joseph] Guess what, he's joining us
after the break. - Really?
- [Chris] Thanks for coming back to Poker Night in America
with Joe Stapleton, I'm Chris Hanson, back to the poker.
Lot of big names at the table today.
Lot of money won in their career.
- Straddle guys. - Before I quit.
- Yeah, we are straddling, I just been doing that
I don't know if we're all doing it.
Are we all doing it? - Everyone hasn't been
I don't think.
- [Joseph] Laak is straddling regardless of whether
anyone else is gonna do it after him.
- [Chris] Maria Ho makes it 300.
- [Maria] It's wide open.
- [Chris] Helmuth calls.
- [Greg] I was wide open last time with a medium pair too.
- I know. - The very last time.
- I don't know if Greg'll wanna straddle that.
He may not want to. - Why.
- [Chris] Bill Lee will call.
- He might not wanna play. - No, he will.
- This big. - We're good.
- I had a job from like. - Yeah, we know your struggle.
- I'm just kidding man.
- [Chris] And Phil Laak's in.
- We're good.
- [Maria] I love how Greg already tilted
and he's not even in the game.
Like this is. - Yeah, you already.
- [Joseph] Ahh, too much talking.
Ahh, can't pay attention. - Flop is jack, seven, four,
brought to you by Kimo Sabe Mezcal.
- [Joseph] Top pair for Helmuth, bottom pair for Laak,
middle pair for Maria.
- [Bill L.] I would've tried to win.
I might not lose my own stack, but I
would've given it a little go.
- [Chris] What is goin' on, that's a quick call.
- Threes, Phil, threes? - Oh no, I'm in
a different range. - Give it a raise.
- I'm in a different range. - Still got the threes?
- Much different range. - No idea what he's got.
- Sorry to leave ya hangin'. - Queen of spades on the turn
Maria bets 1600.
- What the (bleep) is going on here?
- [Chris] She has got Bill Helmuth twisting here.
- [Bill] Every hand I have I just lose.
- [Joseph] You know, some of thee rationales from Helmuth
are beginning to border on senile.
- [Chris] Oh, and she's gonna get him again.
- Yo, what's the deal with these shoes?
Is this a sponsorship or something?
- [Maria] I love those shoes.
- It has to be right?
- I have not been sponsored, no.
- They just gave 'em to you? - I have one of
the coolest deals. - They're his dancing shoes.
- [Chris] Liv Boeree three betting two sevens.
Bill Lee opened things up with seven, six, off.
- You spray painted them? - I think it was super cool
that you were in a Carl's Jr. Commercial.
- Puma baby. - I don't get sponsored
by Puma. - He says it like it's
a possibility.
- You rock those shoes like. - I'm gonna get in line
right now for my Air Helmuth's.
- If I raise you on the flop does that help Maria?
- I'm gonna call.
I have a hand that I'm not folding to or raise.
If I bet spare. - Miss another one?
- [Maria] Yeah, but it was a small-ish.
- Top pair again.
- [Maria] I was prepared to bluff there.
- [Joseph] So Joe Cada has decided to put a fourth bet
with king, jack, kinda turning this into
a pre-flop bluff, make no mistake,
he is perfectly happy with Liv folding,
but instead. She shoves.
- [Chris] Oh man, that's the way you play it.
- [Joseph] The cold four bet looks very strong.
- Nice hand.
- [Chris] Greg Mueller sitting down
in the two seat taking Maria Ho's spot.
Greg Mueller one of the originals on Poker Night in America
was at the very first event, very first episode.
- [Joseph] F-B-T.
Bill Lee, limping under the gun.
King, three shooted, not sure about that.
Cada raising the lady kings. - I really don't know
I don't think I have one I'm like
if I had to say one I think it's Phil Laak's.
I swear to god, true story.
- It was fun playing with all
of you guys. - Bye Maria.
- I'm tilted Maria, I'm very tilted.
- All right, you made a good play.
- [Joseph] You know Phil was talking about
being in the zone and he just got friend zoned by Maria.
- Maria Ho you are. - Like a hit and run
don't forget about that. - Fresh start beginning.
- [Chris] Enjoy Phil's bunny, bye.
- Poker gangster. - She's been doing it
for real. - So Cada flops a set.
Bill's actually drawing live with king tre.
I didn't lend butter to go with king, three of clubs
to fold when there's a club and a gut shot
thank you very much.
Now there's two clubs.
(chips clicking)
- I don't know it was a tough spot
I don't blame you for folding.
- It is a brutal hand, I had to tell you the truth,
once I realized the only way I could go
is just to stay with the truth, the whole way.
Brutal hand, this that, you know.
- [Liv] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- If I never tell the truth, I kinda have to throw it out.
- [Joseph] Joe's gonna bet, my guess
is he's gonna bet bigger this time,
yeah 1500 into a pot of 1600. - They've run it once too.
- It sounds like a lot against you.
I don't know like how. - You know it's also easy
to be on the outside and say he doesn't have it this time.
- [Chris] Bill's actually getting a pretty good price there,
better than two-to-one with 26% equity.
- Glad I didn't wear that shirt.
Phil, I had that shirt on and I was too hot
and I put this one one thank goodness.
- [Joseph] Implied odds if he hits his hand
he gets maybe stack Cada. - Cool shirt, I was just
too hot in it.
- Sorry if that was weird, I just wanted to feel it.
- No, that's a good one. - It's nice.
- 2500. - I was just too hot in it.
- [Chris] Cada fires 2500 into the Bill Lee abyss.
And there's the raise from Lee.
- Hey FBT, I probably shouldn't tell you this
but I did watch the footage. - And there's a call.
- Just run her under flush that's all.
- [Joseph] Cada probably thought he was beat there,
he was getting five to one with top set.
Pretty disgusting spot right there.
Especially if you consider the fact
that the guy who won the money from him
is worth millions, upon millions, upon millions of dollars.
- [Phil] Nice had Bill Lee I can see
that you had the king high flush there and you bet five k.
- [Bill] Flush player.
- Is there a statute of limitations
for main event winners because I almost felt empathy
for Joe Cada after that happened.
- Well, it's been eight years since Cada won
$8.5 million, but then again, he did suck out
like five times at that final table.
So I'm gonna go ahead and say your empathy
comes from a good place here, but it's misguided.
- Well, as long as you think I'm a good person.
Stick around, we'll be back with
the chip counts when we return.
- [Chris] Welcome back to Poker Night in America
here at Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Let's look at the results after night one of play.
- [Joseph] Cada and both Phils finish down
for the evening while Bill Lee won most
of his profit on that last suck out.
Two of my favorite females on the planet
Maria Ho and Liv Boree are up a few G's
and my brother from Hoboken, Greg Merson
finishes up 1375 bucks which is good
for around two weeks rent in that neighborhood.

- [Bill] That's so cold Bill.

if a blank comes down the river too.
- Yeah.
- That's happened before, that has happened before.
- 200. - In the dark, whoo.
