9 Facts About Weddings That Could Make Couples Wish They'd Eloped - Duration: 2:17.

9 Facts About Weddings AND HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN COST

1. Did you know that couples spend $35,329, on average, for their big day?

2. The typical guest list has 141 names, which translates to $245 per guest.

Of course, prices depend on where you get married.

3. Arkansas weddings tend to be the cheapest, at an average of $19,522.

The average wedding in New York City goes for $78,464.

4. 42% of couples now pay for their own weddings, but

the bride's parents still pay 44% of the time.

The groom's parents cover the costs in 13% of weddings.

Meanwhile, 74% of same-sex couples foot the bill themselves.

5. The typical venue costs $16,107, making it the single biggest expense.

That might explain why some people go farther afield: 12% of weddings are now held in barns.

6. Not included in the barn package (usually)?

Releasing doves (from $150)

butterflies (from $29 a dozen)

or ladybugs (from $300 for a 100-guest wedding

*and they're good for the environment, too!

7. No skimping on fashion: Brides spend $1,564, on average, for their wedding dress.

8. And dessert doesn't have to be wedding cake.

21.2% of couples let their guests eat cupcakes these days.

The advantages: You're not limited to one flavor - and cupcakes tend to be cheaper.

9. All of this may explain why 55% of couples prefer receiving cash instead of gifts.

Median amounts range from $50, from friends, to $100 from family.

If You Care About Privacy, You Should Change Your Twitter Settin - tech and science - Duration: 3:09.

If You Care About Privacy, You Should Change Your Twitter Settings Right Now

Since Wednesday, Twitter has been sending out emails and notifications to its over 300

million monthly users to inform them of changes to their privacy policy.

The new policy, which goes into effect on June 18, includes changes to data collection,

data sharing, and digital advertising.

The policy is being run on an opt-out basis, meaning that if users do not actively

change their settings, these policies will automatically be applied to their accounts.

While Twitter hailed the new policy in their mass email sent out Sunday as one that dovetails

with our heartbeat as a company a commitment to protecting and defending your privacy,

groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation are not so enthusiastic.

Contrary to the inviting Sounds good button to accept the new policy and get to

tweeting, the changes Twitter has made around user tracking and data personalization do

not sound good for user privacy, EFF researcher Gennie Gebhart writes.

EFF, along with Life Hacker and CNET, are encouraging users to customize their privacy

settings now before the new changes are automatically enabled in June.

With the new policy, Twitter will be keeping logs for users web histories for 30 days

instead of 10, a move that Jules Polonetsky, CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum, says expands

the pool of people it can track and allows Twitter to make more comprehensive profiles

of users.

Interestingly, this change will not apply to E.U. member countries because Europes

restrictive privacy laws prohibit it.

Twitter also discontinued support for the Do Not Track browser option, which previously

allowed users to protect against targeted advertising.

The reason for the change, says TopTechNews.com writer Barbara Ortutay, is therefore clearly

not about privacy, but money.

Targeted ads that are tailored to your whims and tastes are more lucrative than generic

ones, Ortutay writes.

Whether for privacy or profit, the changes are coming.

Fortunately, its up to users to change their settings and decide how much they want

to share.

CNET offers this simple how-to: Open Settings and go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and

safety > Personalization and data.

At the top of this page is an option to disable all personalization and data settings; on

the Twitter website, click the Disable all.

EFF notes that users can also review, edit, and/or remove data collected on them in the

past by accessing the Your Twitter data option also located in settings.

15 Amazing Facts about the Human Body - Duration: 5:58.

Brainy Dose Presents:

15 Amazing Facts About the Human Body

Your body is the most complex biological mechanism on earth, and it consists of several incredible

processes, as well as some surprises that you may not know about!

Number One: Only 50% of Your Cells Are Human

It's been a common belief that about 1 in 10 of the cells in your body are actually

human.

The rest are made up of microbes that live on you, and inside of you!

They consist of bacteria and viruses, along with other micro-organisms.

However, recent studies suggest that the ratio is closer to 50/50!

Number Two: Mites Live In Your Eyelashes

These creepy, microscopic creatures live in the hair follicles and pores of your face,

and particularly love eyelashes, where they feed on oils and dead skin cells.

They like to come out at night to mate and reproduce.

However, if they multiply too much, they can cause skin and eye irritation.

Number Three: You Are Hairier Than a Gorilla

Most people have about 5 million hair follicles on their bodies.

That's about 3 times more than a gorilla!

The difference is that human body hair is a lot finer, therefore it is a lot less noticeable.

If you have excessive body hair, however, you'll be pleased to know that it has been

linked to a higher intellect.

Number Four: Earwax Means Good Ear Health

While many people find earwax to be disgusting, it's actually a very important part of your

ear's defense system.

It protects the delicate inner ear from bacteria, fungus, dirt and even insects.

It also cleans and lubricates the ear canal.

However, excessive earwax needs to be addressed.

Number Five: Your Middle Finger Nail Grows the Fastest

According to research, nail growth is related to the length of the finger - with the longest

fingers growing nails the fastest, and shortest the slowest.

In addition, the nail on the middle finger of your DOMINANT HAND grows the fastest of

all!

Number Six: The Brain Itself Cannot Feel Pain

While the brain might be the pain center when you hurt yourself, the brain itself does not

have pain receptors and cannot feel pain.

However, the brain is surrounded by lots of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that ARE

receptive to pain, and can give you a pounding headache nonetheless.

Number Seven: Some Tumors Can Grow Teeth

A certain type of tumor, called a teratoma, is made up of cysts that contain embryonic

cell layers.

Teratomas have been reported to contain hair, teeth, bone, and on rare occasions eyes, hands,

feet and other limbs.

Number Eight: You have a Unique Smell

Unless you are an identical twin, as part of that smell is determined by genetics, you

have a unique smell.

However, your individual smell is also largely due to dietary and environmental factors.

Personal hygiene products play a role in creating your unique scent as well.

Number Nine: You Shed 50 To 100 Hairs Every Day

Your pet isn't the only one in your house that sheds!

The average human scalp has 100,000 hairs, and the lifespan of a human hair is about

3 to 7 years.

Every day you lose about 50-100 strands of hair.

But don't worry, you need to lose over 50% of your scalp hairs before it becomes apparent

to others.

Number Ten: Your Feet Can Produce Over a Pint of Sweat a Day

Each of your feet has at least 250,000 sweat glands, and is capable of producing more than

a pint of sweat per day.

However, the sweat itself does not make your feet stink.

The bad odor is actually caused by bacteria on the skin that thrive in sweaty conditions.

Number Eleven: If Saliva Cannot Dissolve Something, You Cannot Taste it

In order for foods, or anything else, to have a taste, chemicals from the substance must

be dissolved by saliva.

Try it for yourself!

Dry off your tongue and then taste something.

Number Twelve: Your Body Fights off Cancer Cells Throughout Your Life

Your immune system kills off at least one "would-be cancerous cell" every day.

This gets compromised when the immune system becomes weak, ineffective or the cancer cells

are developing at such a high rate, that the body cannot kill the cells fast enough.

Number Thirteen: Your Nose and Ears Keep Growing

Bones stop growing shortly after puberty, and muscle and fat cell division decreases

as you age.

But cartilage in your ears and nose continues to grow until the day you die.

Not only does cartilage grow, the earlobes also elongate from gravity.

Number Fourteen: You Produce 1 to 3 Pints of Gas per Day

We produce far more gas than we realize!

That's because most of it actually doesn't smell.

The average person farts (or releases gas) about 14 times a day, and that can add up

to between 1 and 3 pints of gas per day.

Which means that you will release about half a million farts in your lifetime!

Number Fifteen: By the age of 60, You'll Lose About Half of Your Taste Buds

Older individuals tend to lose their ability to taste, and many find that they need much

more intense flavoring in order to be able to fully appreciate a dish.

Maybe you shouldn't trust grandma's cooking after all?!

What do you find the most interesting about the human body?

Tonight, it doesn't feel like a night to celebrate.

Please..

Last night, there was a tragedy in my home town of Manchester.

I am left with a hole in my heart.

I went to my first show in the arena, and I have had some of my best experiences in

my life playing every place in Manchester.

We have a choice every single day that we wake up of what you can put into the world,

and I ask you to please choose love every single day.

I promise that we will be back very soon to Mexico...

We will be back to do a full show.

But, tonight, if it's okay with you, we are gonna play a small acoustic set.

I hope you understand, and I hope you will join me in a moment of silence for all the

victims and their families.

Thank you for understanding.

The Manchester Bombing. What Now? Let's talk about Terror And The Response To It... - Duration: 10:28.

'Sup, you beautiful bastards. Hope you having a fantastic Tuesday.

Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show, and let's just jump into it.

The first thing I want to talk about today is actually part of our new fan favorite segment, "Hey! That's Not Cool."

The story we're talking about is a back and forth between two people on a public bus which means you know there's 50% chance of Worldstarhiphop.

There's video of the whole thing and you know what, let's just-- let's just watch it.

- Not allowed to touch no one - I don't give a fuck.

All that other shit you was talking on that bus. - I don't care nigger!

- You see right...

- We all call each other that.

Do not put your hands in my face.

You already called me your nigger.

You're missing your stop nigger!

- Bro open the door. - Goodbye nigger.

- Say it one more time. I dare you.

Keep saying that shit, you fucking bitch.

- Call the police.

He smacked a tooth out of my head.

He hit a tooth out of my head.

He smacked me so hard.

- You shouldn't had called him a nigger, yo. What's up with you?

- You gotta call the police now.

So hitting people, violence, is never an appropriate response to words, but

I don't feel bad that it happened. Hitting that woman was wrong. It was illegal.

It was technically assault

But if I was that bus driver, and that lady was like, "Call 9-1-1. Call the police." I'd be, like, okay

Oh, no, I forgot how phones work. Oh, no!

I just opened up Clash Royale. I'll get to it, right after, one second...

it's just really hard for me to feel bad about a racist, let alone someone that level of racist.

Now, from this, of course, there's been a debate about freedom of speech. The first amendment!

Many arguing that this woman, while despicable, had the right to say these things.

The first amendment doesn't just protect things that you like, but also hate speech.

And that's something important for people, including HuffPost editors, who have to include notes like,

Because it does, but not always.

if the words are considered a true threat or fighting words

And it's a very specific narrow definition. Abusive language

- I don't care, nigger!

exchanged face-to-face, which would likely provoke a violent reaction.

So potentially, the woman in this video is not protected by the first amendment,

but that also doesn't excuse the attack on her, at least in the eyes of the law.

So she can potentially be guilty of disturbing the peace,

but it also might be hard to argue because in the video

she seems to be saying we all call ourselves that.

So a question I want to pass off to you is: What's your takeaway from this story?

Were they both in the wrong? Just him? Also, Let's say you're the judge and jury here. What do you do?

From there, I want to share some stuff I love today,

and Today in Awesome, brought to you by the DeFranco 2024 shirt

A shirt that says "If the United States is still a thing in seven years and the vampire-robot-Nazis who are also zombies have not taken over, Philip Defranco has my vote.

It's what Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would have wanted. God rest his soul.

If only he hadn't mysteriously died at my house after he'd secured the nomination.

We'll never know what happened. We should probably let it go and just vote DeFranco.

That took a dark turn so fast.

We're doing another run of that shirt this week for a few days,

so if you want to grab that while you can, link to that down below.

And the first bit of awesome, and this will only be awesome to a select group of people,

But if you've ever wanted to work on the Philip Defranco show for the company that we are creating,

we have now opened up applications

Now keep in mind, this is just the beginning. It's local positions. So we have fulfillment coordinator, p.a.s, researchers.

You want to apply, link to that down below.

Also a little while after this, I want to open up remote researcher positions,

and then soon after we'll be looking for more producer, editors and shooters.

But for the first step, it's just those three positions.

So there's that. Good luck to those of you that apply.

I am excited for our family to grow.

Then in other awesome

I did a video with my buddies over roosterteeth played a little game a million dollars

But you'll either love the video or at least you'll be able to walk away from the video with new

Information [that] I also learned on the set and that is my old

Piercings from when I was 20 still work including that before you make decisions kids then if you're in the mood for something that's heartwarming

and hilarious have to share this video of comedian Russell howard talking about a 14 year old cancer patient that I

Don't want to ruin it. Just just trust me

It's fantastic, [and] if you want to see the full versions everything

I just share the secret link of the day anything at all

Links is always are in the description down below then let's talk about that situation in California

Around Nolan [Brood] Nolan is a 20 year old man who Pled guilty to?

Drugging and raping his 16 year old sister of at [Misgav]. Oh, just wait the judge in the case William

H

Follette gave Brewer three years just three years and then he suspended all the

240 days of that sentence and then he gave [brooder]

Probation a slap on the wrist sentence went against what the probation department and the district attorney recommended

And [appears] part of the reason the judge gave this slap on the wrist is [that] the victim which by the way?

I'll just remind you is an [underaged]

Sister's Underage Victim she took her own clothes off and she wasn't unconscious and the judge believed the stigma of the rape conviction

Along with being listed on the sex offenders register was enough of a deterrent to deter the man and others in the community personally

I'm disgusted by [this] decision and also the reason first of I don't know of

[240] days in Prison is enough time to teach someone don't rape your sister and or preferably

Anyone and to to the judges know that the girl took off her own clothes

and she wasn't

unconscious if a videotaped [confession] he is pled guilty

The whole story is that he kept giving his sister deb those that don't know dabs are concentrated doses of Cannabis

It's incredibly powerful when you compare it to regular [old] weed chart at one time found out

It was quickly not for me go back to the store well [bruiser] said that his sister had repeatedly

Resisted his sexual advances then he kept giving her Dabs until she no [longer] recognized him as her brother

He drugged and raped a minor who is his sister, and you're giving him 240 days. [I] just don't get it

How do you expect people to be safe when even after they commit a crime they plead guilty to it?

You don't really hold them responsible for it, and I hope this judge realizes that if and when [brewer] does something horrible again

This is on him to also be at fault therefore this bullshit slap on the wrist

And then finally I want to talk about the horrific

Bombing in Manchester last night if you have not heard around

10:30 late last night and Britain outside of an Ariana grande concert there was a suicide bomb as of recording this video

22 people including children have died 59 were injured. Police say they believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive

Police have identified the suspected bomber of Islamic State aka

Goat fuckers International has claimed responsibility for the attack, but also police don't know if that's true

If there may be taking credit for something they were not

Responsible for it is because the statement appeared to get some of the facts of the situation

Wrong they claims that a soldier managed to place a number of devices among a gathering of crusaders and Manchester and detonated but officials are

Saying there's only one

Explosion and no other devices have been found near the arena and my heartbreaks seeing this story seeing the footage of the chaos

and the fear, this- this barbaric attack not just on innocent people

But on children the names and [information] of those killed is starting to come out one of them was an 8 year old girl

And then when I hear that, it's [just] hard for me to feel anything

But rage and before I get to the point that I really want to hit home on in this story

I need to talk about a guy by the name of

David [lief] David's name was all over [the] place yesterday because in the moments after the attack he tweeted multiple confirmed

Fatalities at Manchester Arena last time I listened to [Ariana] [Grande]

I almost died to following it up with honestly for over a year

I thought ariana grande with something ordered at Starbucks and sharing check my phone and got this message from Twitter

[I] swearing at me now, [not] about an hour and a half after his tweet [hero]

Too soon and as expected the hate of the [internet] was directed towards David

I noticed even people that liked Dark humor going like this is this is

disgusting not a day after it's not a week after you're literally putting this out there in the world looking about a situation where

There were people that were still

Injured still being taken care of some people that were fighting for their lives

and then would later done [any] [seeing] is essentially someone joking about a murder as it was taking [place] save it later tweeters re for

Offending didn't realize the magnitude of the tragedy

I always make stupid jokes about whatever stranding condolences to family would you day that it doesn't make [sense] you said multiple?

Fatality is confirmed in your first tweet

Is that you're thinking that if a terrorist attack only kills a few children like it then it's okay then in nineteen

That's your golden um event believe the offending tweet and tweet

it

I've delete the tweets and so many people ask and then David who did not follow what his last name [was] saying to do just

Leave it leave it alone

He later tweeted out a bunch of kids including this one where he wrote I made a mistake hashtag

And then I started to laugh I can't figure out if I think he's more disgusting or stupid personally if I'm offended by anything

It's the the sad pathetic attempt at an [apology] that's not an apology [didn't] realize the magnitude of the tragedy

I always make stupid jokes just own your shitty joke and don't lie unless once again

You are more stupid than you are disgusting in which case

Maybe don't know anybody whatever everyone's going to forget about David in a few days, and I say people

I want to remember in this story are the

Victims and those who helped because there were so many we had women like Paula robbins

She was reportedly at Victoria Station when the attack took place

She led teenagers to a nearby hotel

And shared her mobile number on Facebook so that worried parents could contact her and be reunited with their children all the people in

Manchester who opened up their doors with hashtag room for

Manchester thing if you were stranded in this explosion if you need a bed a cup of tea a charge phone whatever

I'm here

You can be safe here in this chaos the taxi drivers who turned off their meters put up free taxi and got people the hell

Out of that of course all the brave men and women who rushed into the scene to hell and not just those who are on

Duty it was their time to do their job tons of people that were off duty coming in to health stories of homeless people that

Just happen to be around in that situation working with emergency services people to help people and something like this happens

You don't know if [there] only to be more bombs there's going to be shooting

You don't know those daily heroes that put themselves at risk for others

That's who [and] what I want to remember in this because every time one of these senseless acts of violence happens

We have to grasp on to any sense of hope and the only bits of [hope] I can really grab onto

Are those who do these amazing?

selfless acts in the face of or in the face of terrorism people trying to spread fear and violence

They stand up and do good

but most importantly they stand up when I see pictures from the Manchester [vege] seeing so many people coming out less than

24 [hours] after a terrorist attack coming out all together showing solidarity saying fuck terrorism and also

I'm not scared, and you know what even [if] I feel a little bit scared. It won't stop us

It won't break us, and that's what gives me

Hope think that note is where I want to end that story in today's show remember if you like this video

You like what? I'm trying to do with these daily videos hit that like

but if you're new you're hit that subscribe button join the nation of beautiful bastards who will love your face also if you missed and

want to catch up on yesterday's Philip Defranco shooting click or tap right there to watch that if you want to see yesterday's brand new

Vlog click or tap right there [lots] of that said of course as always my name is Philip Defranco

You've just been phill'd in. [I] love yo faces, and I'll see you [tomorrow]

Things You Believe About American History That Are Wrong - Duration: 6:45.

They say history is written by the victors.

But sometimes it feels more like history was written by someone who honestly couldn't care

less.

"Excuse me.

When did the Mongols rule China?"

"I don't know?

I just work here."

American history in particular tends to take on a life of its own over time, leading to

plenty of seemingly straightforward facts in our history books that were either taken

way out of context or are — let's face it — just plain wrong.

Ben Franklin's turkey

You know the story about Benjamin Franklin fighting to make the turkey the national bird

of the United States?

"The Turkey.

A creature so amazingly stupid it'll stare up at a rainstorm with it's mouth wide open

until it actually drowns."

"Hey, what's everybody lookin' at?"

Look, nobody can deny that turkeys are an important part of American culture — sort

of.

But that story about Benjamin Franklin?

Not so much.

Franklin did question putting a bald eagle on the Great Seal of the United States in

a letter to his daughter.

But here's the thing: the whole turkey bit was kind of a joke.

First, he calls the bald eagle "a Bird of bad moral Character" who lazily steals food

from other birds.

Granted, they are kind of rude.

"You didn't show the Aspirin over here, did you?"

But after that, Franklin writes this about the turkey: "He is besides, though a little

vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the

British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

Courageous battle turkeys?

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that Franklin is just kidding around in this letter, showing

a bit of that ol' Franklin wit that made him so famous.

And even in the joke, he never explicitly states that the turkey should replace the

bald eagle.

He's just saying, "An eagle?

Come on, George, might as well make it a turkey."

Besides, have you ever heard a bald eagle?

"(weak bird call)"

It's not even trying!

Revolutionary tactics

Everyone knows that the colonists in the American Revolution came out on top because they used

hit-and-run, guerilla-style tactics that they learned from Native Americans.

Also, because they had Mel Gibson.

Only...that's not how it happened.

Prior to the American Revolution, colonists actually requested help from Britain because

they had no freaking clue how to fight against Native American tribes.

So if the British couldn't fight back, it' s not because the Minutemen were too wild

and crazy.

It's simply because the Brits taught them to fight too well.

In the end, the real reason Great Britain gave up the fight was, basically, because

they were broke.

Talk about anticlimactic.

That's not nearly as awesome as Mel Gibson stabbing an evil British horse with an American

flag:

Now, while we're on the subject of bogus facts about the American Revolution...

The Siege of Yorktown

We learned in history class that the nascent United States won the Revolutionary War after

American and French forces defeated the British at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.

After that, the war was over, right?

The British forces tucked tail and fled across the Atlantic while the colonists...probably

deep-fried a turkey and listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

A classic American celebration.

"A-mer-i-ca!

A-mer-i -ca!

America!

f**k yeah!"

But before you start lighting off those fireworks, you should know that Yorktown was hardly the

final battle of the war.

The last skirmish was actually the naval Battle of Cuddalore in the Bay of Bengal, off the

coast of India, on June 20, 1783.

That's right, the final battle of the American Revolution took place in India, eighteen months

after the whole thing was supposed to end.

How is that even possible?

Well, remember: France sided with with the United States in 1778.

At that point, France was also at war with Great Britain by default, only they didn't

need to cross the ocean to get their fight on.

America's first war took place on a global scale, and the country ain't stopped since.

"World Police!

Get down on the ground!"

World War II landfall

Most of us assume that World War II never reached the United States mainland.

Sure, we all know about Pearl Harbor, and some of us are even familiar with the Battle

of the Aleutian Islands that happened in Alaska.

But neither Alaska or Hawaii are part of the mainland.

And besides, they weren't even states at the time, so they don't count.

Sorry, Bam.

But what many may not know is that the Japanese did attack the U.S. mainland several times

during the war.

A Japanese submarine shelled the Ellwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara, California on February

23, 1942, and a few months later, on June 24, 1942, another Japanese sub opened fire

on Fort Stevens in Oregon.

In September 1942, on two occasions, the same submarine used a floatplane to drop incendiary

bombs near Brookings, Oregon in the hopes of starting a forest fire.

None of these attacks caused major damage, but it's a little terrifying to think that

the Japanese navy was the greatest threat to our west coast until Carrot Top started

doing standup.

Burning witches

The Salem Witch Trials, which lasted from February 1692 to May 1693, represent one of

the most prominent examples of mass hysteria in American history.

"Well that's 75 witches we've processed that oughta show God whose side we're on, a

Pastor?"

"Yes Nedwin, but we have many more strumpets to incinerate."

During this period, hundreds of people in Salem Village, Massachusetts were accused

of witchcraft, and about twenty people were executed.

You probably know that the puritanical government burned these accused witches at the stake.

Except that's a total myth.

Accused witches were occasionally burned at the stake in medieval Europe…

"What makes you think that she's a witch?"

"Well, she turned me into a newt!

"A Newt?"

"I got better."

But in Salem, almost all the so-called "witches" were hung.

So that's...not exactly better.

Wouldn't a slap on the wrist have been enough?

Maybe banish them to a nice swamp?

"Get out of my swamp, you kids!"

See?

Much nicer!

Capital crisis

Most people know that Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States.

But what they might not know is that D.C. isn't our first capital city.

It's not even even close: it's actually our ninth capital.

The first capital was Philadelphia, where the Continental Congress convened in 1774

and signed the Declaration of Independence two years later.

The capital changed several times during the Revolutionary War — from Philadelphia to

Baltimore to the unlikely Lancaster, Pennsylvania — as Congress constantly moved to keep one

step ahead of the British Army.

When George Washington took the oath of office in 1789, he did it in New York City, meaning

Federal Hall in the Big Apple briefly served as the first capital of the United States

under the U.S. Constitution.

That lasted about a year before Philadelphia became capital again, and things finally settled

in the District of Columbia in July 1790.

Thankfully, it's been smooth sailing in Washington since then.

Medical Company Lies About Obamacare To Boost Profits - Duration: 11:44.

ANOTHER YOUNG TURKS EXCLUSIVE FOR YOU GUYS, JONATHAN LARSON

ARE MANAGING EDITOR INTIMACY POLITICS IS BREAKING THE STORY.

YOU CAN READ ON MEDIUM.COM/THE YOUNG TURKS.COM GOING TO

SAY ALL ABOUT INSIDE IS ABOUT THE MEDICAL DEVICES TAX AND

A COMPANY CALLED STRYKER THAT WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT IT

DEEPLY AND WHAT THEY SAID AND WHAT THE REALITY IS.

THIS IS WHILE OF JOURNALISM AND RESEARCH IN FINDING OUT WHAT

THEIR OTHER STATEMENTS IN PUBLIC ARE ESPECIALLY TO THEIR

INVESTORS.

THAT'S WHERE WE FIND THE TRUTH.

JONATHAN BEGINS BY SLITTING STRYKER CORPORATION CEO

KEVIN LOBO HAS MADE MULTIPLE STATEMENTS ON NATIONAL

TELEVISION ABOUT THE NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT OBAMA CARES TAX

ON MEDICAL EQUIPMENT HAS HAD ON HIS COMPANY IN THE INDUSTRY.

BUT THOSE CLAIMS APPEAR TO BE UNDERCUT NOT ONLY BY THE

COMPANY'S SEC FILINGS, BUT ALSO BY STATEMENTS MADE TO WALL

STREET ANALYSTS BY STRYKER'S OWN AND VET EXECUTIVES,

INCLUDING LOBO HIMSELF GOT HE MENTIONED THE TV APPEARANCES,

LET'S GO TO LOBO ON CNBC AND HAVE THEM TALK ABOUT HOW

OUTRAGEOUS THE MEDICAL DEVICES TAX BY OBAMA CARE WAS NOT

>> BASICALLY, THE TAX REALLY IS A JOB KILLER, AND AN

INNOVATION KILLER.

>> BUT WHAT DID CONGRESS DO?

>> THEY DECIDED TO SUSPEND IT.

>> DID OBAMA SIGN IT?

>> IT HAD BIPARTISAN SUPPORT JUST FOR SUSPENSION FOR A

TWO-YEAR PERIOD, BUT WE LOOK FORWARD TO WITH THE NEW

ADMINISTRATION IS A FULL REPEAL WHICH HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT.

>> THIS IS IMPLEMENTED IN THE BEGINNING, LOBO SAID IT WAS

A JOB KILLER SO WE'RE GOING TO LOOK INTO THAT FIRST AND AN

INNOVATION KILLER AND WE ARE GOING TO LOOK INTO THAT

SECOND WE'RE GOING TO SEE THE ACTUAL FACTS.

UNDERSTAND THAT OBAMA, BEFORE HE LEFT IT AS HE EXPLAINED

THEIR SUSPENDED.

HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BUT HE DID, WHICH LED PERFECTLY INTO

REPUBLICAN HANDS BECAUSE WHEN TRUMP COMES IN, HE IS

PUSHING FOR A FULL REPEAL AS LOBO EXPLAINED.

LET'S DIAMOND ACTUAL FACTS.

LOBO'S AMBITION OPPOSITION TO OBAMA CARE CENTERS ON ITS

MEDICAL DEVICE TAX WHICH WAS ADDED TO SUBSIDIZE THE COST

OF EXPANDING COVERAGE AND WAS PROJECTED TO NET $27

BILLION THAT PURPOSE.

MEDICAL DEVICE MAKERS WERE SINGLED OUT BECAUSE THEY

WOULD BENEFIT BY EXPANDED INSURANCE COVERAGE.

THEY WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO GET A LOT OF THAT MONEY BACK ANYWAY.

THAT WAS ALL POINT OF THE TAX IS LET THE EQUITABLE HERE.

WE DON'T WANT YOU TO JUST TAKE THE UPSIDE AND SPREAD THE

DOWNSIDE TO OTHERS, BUT ANYTIME YOU HAVE ANY DOWNSIDE FOR

ANY INDUSTRY THEY WILL UNLEASH THEIR LOBBYIST AND OF COURSE

THEY SPENT A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY LOBBYING ON THIS ISSUE.

LOBO SAID QUOTE THE TAX REALLY IS A JOB KILLER.

ITíS AN

INNOVATION KILLER.

CONGRESS DECIDED TO SUSPENDED.

IT HAD BIPARTISAN SUPPORT

JUST FOR SUSPENSION FOR A TWO-YEAR PERIOD BUT WE LOOK

FORWARD TO, WITH THE NEW ADMINISTRATION, A FULL

REPEAL AS HE SHOWED YOU GUYS.

THAT WAS THE CLAIM IN PUBLIC.

THEY SAY STRYKER FIRST PUBLICLY BLAMED THE MEDICAL DEVICE

TAX FOR THE IMMINENT LAYOUTS OF 5%

OF ITS GLOBAL WORKFORCE AND A NOVEMBER 10,

2011 PRESS RELEASE, MORE THAN A YEAR AHEAD OF THE TAX.

THE LAB ANNOUNCEMENT BECAME A NATIONAL SYMBOL OF OBAMA

CARE IS A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON JOBS.

HOWEVER, AND A FILING SUBMITTED THE SAME DAY TO THE SEC AND

SUBJECT TO FEDERAL REGULATIONS REGARDING ITS FEROCITY, STRYKER

OFFERED AN EXPLANATION MORE COMMONLY CITED FOR LAYOUTS,

THE COMPANY WANTED TO ELIMINATE REDUNDANCIES CREATED BY

RECENT ACQUISITIONS.

ON THE ONE HAND, PUBLICLY THEY ARE SAYING IT IS OBAMA CARE, IT

IS GOING TO KILL 5% OF OUR WORK FIRST AND THEN WHEN THEY

ACTUALLY HAVE TO SAY THINGS THAT ARE PROVABLE IN AN SEC FILING,

THEY GO THEY DON'T MENTION OBAMA CARE OR THE TAX, THEY GO WE

ACQUIRED A BUNCH OF COMPANIES SO COURSE WE LAID PEOPLE OFF.

COST SAVINGS.

AND THEY BRAG ABOUT IT.

THEY SAY THESE ACTIONS, AGAIN WE EXPLAIN, THESE ACTIONS ARE BEING

INITIATED TO PROVIDE EFFICIENCIES, THIS IS ACCORDING

TO STRYKER CORPORATION, EFFICIENCIES AND REALIGN

RESOURCES FOLLOWING RECENT ACQUISITIONS TO ALLOW FOR

CONTINUED INVESTMENT IN STRATEGIC AREAS IN AN

ONGOING CHALLENGING ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT AND MARKET

SLOWDOWN AND ELECTIVE PROCEDURES.

SO THEN IT WASN'T OBAMA CARE, IT WAS A MARKET SLOWDOWN AND

PROCEDURES AND YOU ARE DOING REALIGNMENT FOR YOUR COST

EFFICIENCIES MEANING YOU ARE FIRING PEOPLE TO SAVE MONEY

HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TAX BUT BECAUSE OF THE

MERGERS THAT YOU DID AND BECAUSE THE MARKET IS SLOWING DOWN.

ADVAMED IS AN INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION THAT LOBBIES

TOGETHER FOR ALL OF THESE COMPANIES INCLUDING STRYKER AND

LOBO HAS ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO IT AND THEN THEY CONTRIBUTED TO

TRY TO KILL THIS TAX AND HE IS ALSO A PART OF THAT

ORGANIZATION AS WELL.

JONATHAN LARSON EXPLAINS ADVAMED HAS POINTED TO A STUDY

ESTIMATING THAT THE MEDICAL DEVICE INDUSTRY WOULD LOSE

43,000 JOBS ONCE THE TAX WAS IMPLEMENTED IN AUGUST 2012

HOWEVER POLITICIZED REPORTED THAT THE STUDY WAS FUNDED BY

ADVAMED AND THAT THE RESEARCH SERVICE BLOOMBERG

GOVERNMENT FOUND THE STUDY NOT CREDIBLE.

THEY DO A STUDY THAT THEY THEMSELVES COMMISSIONED AND

THEY GO TELL US THAT WE'RE GOING TO LOSE JOBS.

LOOK AT THAT, THE STUDY SAYS WE GOING TO LOSE 43,000

JOBS STOP LITTLE FACT GOOD JOURNALISM ON THEIR IN

LOOKS INTO IT SAYS IT'S NOT TRUE THAT THE STUDY THE ONE THAT

THEY COMMISSIONED ASSUMED THAT MANUFACTURERS WOULD MOVE

10% OF THEIR PRODUCTION OVERSEAS, EVEN THOUGH THE

TAX APPLIED TO IMPORTED DEVICES AS WELL.

TO UNDERSTAND THAT?

WITH THE JOBS OVERSEAS BECAUSE THE TEXT HERE IN AMERICA,

BUT THE TAX ALSO APPLIES TO THE DEVICES THAT ARE IMPORTED

IN.

IT APPLIES JUST THE SAME.

TOTAL BS EXCUSE.

HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TAX.

STRYKER HAS NOT SAID WHETHER IT WILL CREATE ANY NEW JOBS IN

THE EVENT OF A FULL REPEAL.

BUT WAIT A MINUTE, I THOUGHT YOU SAID THE START THING WAS A

JOB KILLER AND IF YOU REPEAL IT, ALL THE SUDDEN YOU'RE GOING

TO HAVE ALL THESE JOBS BUT WHEN YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO SEC

FILINGS AND THINGS THAT CAN BE DOUBLE CHECKED, ALL OF THE

SUDDEN YOU ARE NOT PROMISING ANY NEW JOBS.

NUMBER GO NOW TO BACKFILL UP ON CNBC.

>> MEDICARE, MEDICAID AND SOCIAL SECURITY WITHOUT CUTS.

HAVE TO DO IT.

GET RID OF THE FRAUD, GET RID OF THE WASTE AND ABUSE.

>> REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE NEW

ADMINISTRATION, WE'RE NOT REALLY EXCITING ANY MAJOR CHANGE.

IT IS BEEN VERY CONSISTENT.

WE'VE HAD 14/4 IN A ROW GROWING HIGHER THAN 5%

UNLIKE PHARMACEUTICALS, OUR MEDICAL DEVICE PRICES HAVE

BEEN DECLINING EVERY YEAR SINCE 2008

THAT OUR PRICE DECREASE EACH YEAR IS ABOUT 1 1/2 2%.

>> WAIT A MINUTE, SOUNDS LIKE YOU WERE BRAGGING ABOUT HOW

GREAT YOUR BUSINESS IS DOINGÖ ALL THESE YEARS UNDER THIS

TAX THEY WOULD'VE BEEN CRUSHED BY NOW THAT YOU HAD A VIRAL

THESE PEOPLE, WHAT HAPPENED?

IT OR DO YOU ARE DOING PRETTY WELL.

MORE DETAILS ON THAT.

KEVIN LOBO SAID WE ALSO CONTINUING ON OUR PATH

TOWARD DRIVING GREATER COST EFFICIENCIES.

THAT MEANS FIRING PEOPLE.

STRYKERS FILINGS IN PUBLIC STATEMENTS ALSO SHOW LITTLE

EVIDENCE OF THE TAXES PROVED TO BE AN INNOVATION KILLER FOR

THE COMPANY.

WE LOOKED AT JOBS, NOW LET'S LOOK AT INNOVATION AND SEE

HOW THEY ARE DOING OVER THERE.

AFTER INCREASING SPENDING ON RESEARCH, DEVELOPING AND

ENGINEERING BY JUST 2% THE AIR PRIOR, STRYKER INCREASED R&D

SPENDING 13.8% IN THE FIRST YEAR THE TAX.

WAIT A MINUTE I THOUGHT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO LOWER IT.

INSTEAD YOU DRAMATICALLY INCREASED INNOVATION

THROUGH YOUR R&D BUDGET.

FROM $471 MILLION-$536 MILLION.

R&D SPENDING ROSE BY AN AVERAGE ANNUAL RATE OF 10.1%

DURING THE THREE YEARS IN WHICH THE TAX WAS APPLIED.

LINE NUMBER 2.

OH, INNOVATION IS GOING TO DIE.

WE CAN DO IT BECAUSE OF THE TAX.

I'M GLAD THEY INCREASED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, JUST DON'T BUY

ABOUT IN PUBLIC AND PRETEND THAT OBAMA CARE WAS GOING TO KILL

YOUR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WHEN IT DID THE EXACT OPPOSITE.

I'M NOTHING THAT OBAMA CARE CAUSE THEM TO INCREASES BENDING

ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BUT IT CERTAINLY DIDN'T DECREASE IT.

THAT IS JUST THE FACT.

KEVIN LOBO GOING TO SAY OUR ONGOING INVESTMENTS IN R&D AS

WELL AS OUR TARGET GET IT MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS,

POSITIONS AS WELL TO DELIVER INNOVATION TO OUR HOSPITAL

CUSTOMERS.

APPARENTLY, KEVIN LOBO ON THE ONE HAND SAYS INNOVATION KILLER,

I'M ON TV I HATE OBAMA CARE AND THEN TURNS AROUND TO HIS

INVESTORS TO THAT SEC AND SAYS WERE DOING GREAT.

WHICH ONE IS IT?

WHICH ONE IS IT?

IF YOU PAY A LITTLE BIT MORE TAXES THEN YOU WON'T GET AS

MUCH COMPENSATION WHICH BY THE WAY, THAT DIDN'T EVEN TURN

OUT TO BE TRUE BUT THE GREED IS ENDLESS.

GIVE ME GIVE ME GIVE ME, AND I NEVER WANT TO GIVE ANYTHING

BACK.

BESIDES INCREASING SPENDING ON EXECUTIVE PAY, R&D, MERGERS

AND ACQUISITIONS AND DIVIDEND PAYOUTS, STRYKER ALSO UPPED

THE AMOUNT OF MONEY USED TO REPURCHASE ITS OWN STOCK.

STOCK BUYBACKS DURING THE TAX SPAN TOTALED

$1.17 BILLION.

WE DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY BECAUSE OF THE TAX THAT OBAMACARE

PUT ON US.

WE HAVE SO MUCH CASH WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO INVEST IT, WE DON'T

KNOW

WHAT TO DO WITH IT, SO WE BUY BACK MORE OF OUR STOCK

WHICH INCREASES OUR STOCK PRICE AND INCREASES EXECUTIVE

COMPENSATION.

OF COURSE.

AFTER HANDING SHAREHOLDERS $324

MILLION IN DIVIDENDS THE YEAR BEFORE THE TAX HIT, IN

2013 STRYKER PAID OUT $401 BILLION IN DIVIDENDS.

THAT INCREASED TO $462 MILLION IN 2014 AND TO $521 MILLION IN

2015.

WHAT HAPPENED, I THOUGHT THE TAX WAS GOING TO KILL YOU GUYS.

YOU ARE PILING ON THE DIVIDENDS THAT YOU ARE GIVING TO

SHAREHOLDERS, THE BUYBACKS AND NOW LET'S GO TO COMPENSATION

FOR FOLKS LIKE KEVIN LOBO.

LOBO'S TOTAL COMPENSATION ROSE FROM 9.23 MILLION IN

2012 TO 12.8 MILLION IN 2016.

WHAT HAPPENED, KEVIN LOBO?

I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE DEVASTATING FOR YOU GUYS.

YOU KNOW WHAT THE REAL ANSWER IS?

HE'S THINKING, MAN, IF I DIDN'T HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA TAX

MAYBE INSTEAD OF $12.6 MILLION, I COULD'VE MADE $14 MILLION.

LET ME GO ON TV AND TELL YOU A WHOLE BUNCH OF LIES WHICH I

WILL

THEN SAY THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT I HAVE TO ACTUALLY

TELL THE TRUTH ON SEC FILINGS.

STRYKER'S CASH ON HAND BALLOONED AS WELL DURING THE PERIOD

THE TAX WAS SAID TO BE KILLING JOBS AND INNOVATION.

STRYKER'S FEDERAL FILING SHOWS ITS CASH RESERVES WENT FROM 1.4

BILLION BEFORE THE TAX TO 3.4

BILLION AT THE TIME IT WAS SUSPENDED.

THERE IS A REASON WHY I AM TELLING YOU THIS.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT STRYKER.

THIS HAPPENS TO BE AN EASY CASE TO POINT OUT AND IF EVERYBODY

CARED TO DO INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AS WE ARE TRYING TO

DO AT THE YOUNG TURKS YOU COULD GO TO THE SEC FILINGS AND SEE

WHAT THE

REALITY OF THE MATTER IS, BUT IT IS A BIGGER STORY THAN THAT.

WHEN THEY TELL YOU I AM DOING THIS FOR YOU SO IT WILL

TRICKLE DOWN ALL OVER YOU GUYS.

MAYBE IT WILL, MAYBE IT WON'T, AND I AM TRYING TO PROTECT

YOUR JOBS.

I JUST CARE ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLASS IN AMERICA.

NO, THEY CARE BUT THEIR OWN COMPENSATION.

WHEN THEY SAY THEY DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY BECAUSE OF TAX, IT

TURNS OUT THEY HAVE $2 BILLION IN CASH DESPITE THE TAX.

NOT TELLING YOU THE TRUTH.

NOW DESPITE CALLING THE TAX A JOB KILLER, LOBO HAS GROWN

STRYKERS PAYROLL FROM 22,010 EMPLOYEES IN 2012

TO MORE THAN 33,000 TODAY.

WHAT HAPPENED?

I THOUGHT IT WAS A JOB KILLER.

IT WASN'T, THEY WERE

NEVER TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT IT.

THE REALITY IS THE ONLY

REASON THEY ARGUE AGAINST THOSE IS SO THAT THOSE

EXECUTIVES CAN MAKE MORE MONEY.

Class clowns

Making goofing off with your best buds from high school into your job sounds like a ridiculous

pipe dream, but that's exactly what happened to Brian "Q" Quinn, Sal Vulcano, James "Murr"

Murray, and Joe Gatto.

The long-time friends were born within nine months of each other on Staten Island and

met as teens at an all-boys Catholic high school — the perfect proving ground for

fine-tuning their prankster chops.

Murray says their high school shenanigans helped shape their specialized skillset, making

them "well-practiced in the art of pranking."

One such early prank — Gatto's frequent attempts to touch people with his nose without

them noticing — even made its way onto Jokers.

Who says school doesn't prepare you for the real world …

"Oh my God."

"I feel like we're about to cause an international incident."

Troupers

Goofing off is fun and all, but you need to find an audience if you're going make a living

at it.

So in 1999, the guys formed a comedy troupe called The Tenderloins.

Fast-forward to 2007 when the four friends entered the Carson Daly-curated NBC online

comedy video competition It's Your Show.

Their entry, "Time Thugs," an infomercial spoof about some time-hopping goons that can

fix your past, helped nab them the top prize of $100,000 …

"You Timmy Jenkins?"

"Who wants to know?"

"Our fists want to know, you little bastard!"

The guys took the cash and put together a pilot for Spike TV in 2008 called Mission:

Uncomfortable that would ultimately become Impractical Jokers.

The network ultimately decided not to pick the show up, but the guys often show snippets

from it at their live shows.

Joke's on them

The idea for the pilot came one night when the guys were discussing prank shows and were

inspired to invert the formula and make an "upside-down hidden camera show" where they're

the butt of their own jokes.

Or one of their butts is the joke ...

"You have a finger in your a------ on television!"

The Tenderloins say they don't consider Impractical Jokers a reality show or even necessarily

a prank show, but instead just a platform for their comedy.

Four dudes wreaking havoc in public sure sounds like Jackass, but the guys are quick to point

out that the joke is always on them instead of the unsuspecting public, or as Joe calls

them, merely the "instrument of embarrassment."

"Oh my God."

"That's what happens when you lose!"

Behind the schemes

When Jokers started out, it was literally just the four guys in control of every aspect

of the show — they even shot their "pitch episode" for TruTV in 2010 with their iPhones.

After the success of the first two seasons, they finally were making enough money to hire

some writers to work with them in creating the jokes and brainstorming ideas for challenges.

"Low Risk, High Yield Investments.

Little risk, lotta yield.

You don't put a lot of risk out there, and you bring a lot of yield in.

It's all about the yield."

But that doesn't mean the foursome are hands-off after six seasons and counting.

Murr describes the show as "an improv show in disguise," with about 60 to 70 percent

of it made up on the fly.

Joe still oversees all the editing, too, ensuring The Tenderloins' stamp remains firmly on the

Jokers product no matter how big they get.

Off-screen antics

The guys may be getting paid to force each other into the most excruciating situations

imaginable on TV, but that doesn't mean they lay off in private.

They play tricks on each other constantly off-camera, and, much like on the show, Murr

is typically the target.

One of their favorite pranks involves increasing the tip Murr leaves at restaurants by adding

a digit somewhere on the receipt while he's distracted.

"Murr's cruise credit card.

There's money on the boat, you use this to buy everything, you guys want a drink?"

"Keep them coming!"

The guys rarely dare Joe to do anything in public anymore, so convinced are they that

he'll do pretty much anything proposed to him, just for laughs.

After all, this is the guy who walked down Wall Street in a wedding dress with his dog

gussied up as a groom beside him ...

Jokers in the wild

Far from one-prank ponies, the guys have shared their comedic talents elsewhere, with Sal

and Murr doing an episode of Bones in 2015, and all four scheduled to make appearances

in the Syfy series 12 Monkeys.

Q is set to star in a new movie directed by indie horror maestro Adam Green, which means

he's likely get his head blown off in some wonderfully gruesome way.

But Murr says their solo interests won't keep them from their Jokers duties, and the guys

will "keep working together for a long time to come."

"You guys just f---ed up."

"Hey watch your language buddy, it's a family friendly show."

"Season six is coming, and I'm going to destroy the three of you."
