How to Jump-start a Car - Duration: 3:35.
Hi there, I'm Mitch and this is David and we're with Les Schwab Tire Center.
Today, we want to show you how to safely jump-start a vehicle with a dead battery.
So, before we do the jump-start procedure, you want to make sure that you always remove
the key from the ignition and just set it in a safe place.
Alright.
Well, the first thing you want to do is make sure the cable ends are kept apart.
And this will be the dead vehicle. So Mitch, if you want to get started,
we're going to start by hooking the positive cable onto the positive lead of the vehicle.
So, now we're going to go to the live vehicle and we'll hook the positive cable up first.
And that's designated with a plus sign or a red cable.
In this case, we have both.
So we'll uncover this terminal, and we'll hook the red jumper cable to the positive first.
And you want to make sure you have a good connection there.
And then we'll go to the ground, or the negative.
And you can see a negative sign here and a black cable typically designates the negative.
So again, you want a good connection with that as well.
Now on the dead vehicle, we're going to want to hook up the negative to a good ground away
from the battery
as far away as we can so as we don't have an explosion or a spark that could cause an
explosion.
So we're going to hook this to the strut tower.
Now that we've got the cables hooked up, one thing that you want to keep in mind, is keep
the cables routed so they're away from the fans or any of the hot components of the motor.
The radiator gets hot on top, or you might have a manifold or something that's hot.
So just run the cables right outside the vehicle.
Same with the dead vehicle. As you can see, we've got the cables running to the outside,
not over any of the hot engine components or anywhere near the fan.
So we've got the cables set up.
This is the live car, so we're going to go ahead and start the live car and let it run
for a few minutes before we start the dead vehicle.
So after that has run for a couple of minutes, that will give a good charge back into the
dead battery, and we'll have Mitch start the dead car.
There we go, it worked.
Now keep in mind, don't turn the ignition off, and you can head on into Les Schwab
and we'll check your battery for free.
Great, so now that the car is started, we'll disconnect the cables in the reverse order.
So we'll start with the ground on the dead car, and then we'll come back over to the
live car.
We'll disconnect the ground.
Again, keep it away from the other cable.
Disconnect the positive cable, and then the positive on the dead car.
Now a couple of things to keep in mind, and we've got a fairly nice day today, but in
inclement weather or at night time, when it's dark, it's hard for other vehicles to see you.
So if you're on the side of the road, it's great to have some flairs or some reflective
triangles and bright clothing if you have that.
And then try to stay out of the line of traffic.

Formula SAE Builds Fast Cars and Strong Teamwork - Duration: 3:50.

--Formula SAE is basically an engineering design team.
We design, manufacture, test, and then race
an open-wheel internal combustion engine car
against other teams from around the nation and around the world.
The summer is basically design phase.
We design the suspension points of the car.
The chassis is designed around those suspension points.
From there, all the other subteams design their components,
so powertrain designs the intake, design the oil system, design the cooling system,
and then you have drivetrain designing how the power is transferred from the engine to the wheels.
Electronics designs the control systems for the car.
And then you have composites and aero basically designing all the bodywork,
and the various aerodynamics that go on the car.
--We got in contact with Ford.
Ford was very kind and they were nice enough to allow us a certain amount of time to test in their wind tunnel.
We were so excited for this opportunity! We planned out so many tests ahead of time:
changing angle of attack of some parts, to removing parts,
putting new parts on that we were testing,
trying to determine where we should take our design next.
We can test that all day in theory, but
until we actually take it to the wind tunnel
and test that it's actually doing what it's supposed to do, we have no idea.
--After the design phase is completed,
we move into the manufacturing phase, which essentially,
everyone starts manufacturing the parts that they designed.
For chassis, for instance, that's jigging and then welding.
Powertrain, they got an intake recently,
which is 3D-printed from our sponsor, Realize.
Aero works very much in tandem with composites.
Carbon fiber is light and strong. A lighter car means faster lap times,
better handling and those types of things.
We take the car out. The first thing we probably do is a shakedown,
just kind of run the car, then we can start going through acceleration runs, skidpad runs,
then we start doing lap times, and basically just tuning the car
for best handling, and just learning how it operates.
We have a very large trailer that we shove the car in, and basically all of our tools in the shop, too.
We go to Michigan International Speedway.
The first thing they do when we get there is basically a tech inspection.
And then after that, the car's good, and we got all the tech inspection stickers,
then we're good to compete in dynamic events.
That's the biggest test of the car. Only about half the teams finish.
So essentially you do 10 laps, have a 3-minute driver change,
then do 10 more laps. And then, it's over, if you can finish it all.
And then you do fuel economy, which they measure how much gas is left in the tank.
It is amazing driving it, because you know that a team of students built this.
Having it all manufactured and coming together, and then the car actually running,
that's obviously just a bolt of excitement.
The biggest challenge to overcome is definitely balancing schoolwork with the Formula SAE work.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we come in and we work all day, sometimes all night,
working on this car. So we definitely have a large passion for it.
--Formula is really just about the team experience, and it's about working with
a lot of people from a lot of different majors and disciplines.
--The work is really hard, it's challenging and it is rewarding.
But the best part is probably getting to spend time with people, because
you know, we're all weird engineers, and so we have a lot of fun together.
And everybody wants to be here.
You don't have to show up, it's a club. But everyone wants to be here and wants to commit to it.
--To do this kind of stuff, you really got to have a passion.
You really get to apply your knowledge from class,
and you get to kind of figure out stuff on your own, which is really a lot of fun.
It's really all about how much you put into it, and then that's what you get out of it.

The search for Australia's Best Driver's Car 2017 | motoring.com.au - Duration: 1:34.
Welcome back to Tasmania, and the third running of Australia's Best Driver's Car.
This year we welcome 12 all-new entrants to Australia's premiere performance car test,
with prices ranging from 40-grand to our cap of $250,000.
The 2017 field comprises hot hatches, fast coupes and sizzling sedans; with four, six
and eight-cylinder engines; and front, rear and all-wheel drive configurations covered.
As is always the case, ABDC is not a battle of specification and speed.
The cars assembled here are judged on how they make us feel behind the wheel.
Judging the cars in 2017 are nine of motoring.com.au's road test team, V8 Supercar driver Luke Youlden,
multiple Targa Tasmania winner Greg Crick, and UK-based motoring critic John Mahoney.
The team will spend five days assessing Australia's best driver's cars on Australia's best
driving roads, with on-track performance testing held at Hobart's Baskerville Raceway and
acceleration testing at the TRDA Drag Strip in Powranna.

How To Shine Your Wheels! - Chemical Guys Car Care - Duration: 5:49.
What's up guys we're back here in the Detail Garage with this Tesla.
This car hasn't been washed in over four months so it is completely thrashed.
The paint is covered in dirt and debris but mainly these wheels are coated in brake dust,
grime and road debris.
Today we're going to get it cleaned up and looking right.
Over here I've got my bucket full of water and I'll place one Dirt Trap inside of it
to filter out and contaminants and prevent them returning to the vehicle.
If you noticed I place it in at an angle and press it all the way to the bottom to reduce
air getting stuck underneath it so it can create a seal which prevents any gross contaminants
from coming back through the cones.
To help me clean these rims I have three brushes.
I have our Green Flagged Tip Brush which is for cleaning the face of the wheel, the Stiffy
Blue Brush for the tire to remove road grime and previous dressings and lastly we have
our new Easy Reach Rim and Tire Detailing Brush to get into the spokes removing the
brake dust and grime all the way to the back of the barrel.
Before we do all that we'll load up our bucket with some Diablo Wheel Gel to create foam
that emulsifies brake dust and contaminants to prevent scratching and we'll activate it
using the hose.
Starting off by putting all three brushes in the bucket to collect foam which helps
us clean.
Before we start I'll rinse off as much of the grime as possible so we won't scratch
and then we can start with the foaming process.
By using our Jet Stream Fire Hose Nozzle it has helped take down all the loose heavier
filth to prevent swirls and scratches.
Gathering foam and lubrication on the Easy Reach Wheel Brush we are going to start at
the highest point of the wheel this way we're not dragging the debris over areas that we
have already cleaned.
You can see it goes all the way to the back of the wheel taking off as much of the brake
dust and grime without scratching.
This wheel brush has super soft bristles which help to take off anything that is stuck in
small crevices but won't scratch the surface.
To add some more cleaning power as well as foam I'm going to spray some Sticky Wheel
Gel on here.
This helps take off road grime, embedded contaminants and also anything that has been sitting on
the surface because like I said this car hasn't been detailed in at least four months and
it just got back from a cross-country road trip so it picked up a lot of road grime and
filth that can harm the finish.
So I'm spraying a generous amount on here to help foam and lubricate so we don't scratch
it.
As you can see this brush went all the way to the back of the barrel and took care of
the sitting grime and debris and now you'll look in here and see a perfectly clean rim.
Now we're going to move on to another brush.
We're going to use our Green Flagged Tip Brush this is going to take care of anything that
is left on the face of the wheel.
So I'm going to spray a little bit of Sticky Wheel Gel into the brush this adds cleaning
power as well as lubrication so that again we don't add new scratches or swirls to the finish.
Working at the top and going around the rim we are picking up any remaining residues and
brake dust to get these rims looking right.
So I'm also going to spray some Sticky Citrus Wheel Gel in this brush because this is adding
cleaning power which creates foam that penetrates the rubber to remove dressings and road grime
to bring back a natural black look.
Alrighty guys as a last step we need rinse off all this spent product and grime that
had caked up all over the wheels and wheel wells so we'll use the Jet Stream Fire Hose Nozzle.
Now if you're wondering why we started with the wheels it is because on any detail if
you are washing the exterior you'll want to start with the dirtiest areas and the wheels
are obviously the most grime and polluted area.
So we started with the wheels and now that they are looking right we are going to move
on to the body when we come back to the Detail Garage.
Just want to say thanks to you guys for sticking through, obviously it gets pretty loud and
noisey out here.
