Voice typing. Or dictation. It seems like
we should be good at it by now. The
technology is here. We have tools like
the Google Home and the Amazon Echo in
our homes. And as writer, I really want
these tools to work. Instead of using my
fingers to type, I would love to be able
to use my voice. And I've been
experimenting with it for years and
maybe now it seems like the time, but I
always want to be good at it. And I went
to Google and I typed "how to be good at
voice typing" and I wasn't really getting
the kind of tutorials that I needed to
become good at it. I was getting a lot of
technology tutorials about how to use
voice typing which is basically not that
hard and what I was really looking for
was some psychological tips - something to
improve my word count, but also improve
my word quality as I was going through
this learning process. So I'm going to
share the tips with you now that I have
been practicing with voice typing for
about three months now things that work
for me to get better with word count as
well as with word quality and things
that didn't work for me so let's start
out number one I am going to talk for a
minute or two about the technology and
the technology that I picked is Google
Docs and I used Google Voice typing
within Google Docs and this works for me
I get about 95 to
97% accuracy which is really good I use
my computer I have to use Google Chrome
to access it which means I can use
either my laptop my Apple laptop or I
can use my HP laptop and I use my
built-in microphone when I use it I have
friends that prefer to use their you
know snowball blue mics or a more robust
mic I don't I just use the mic that I
have on hand and it works fine with a 95
to 97% accuracy I got some pushback from
my friends is that you know Apple does
come with its own speech recognition
device and I did the side by side taste
test so to speak between Google Voice
and Apple system Google Voice won hands
down and they said oh you have to use
the special mics in blah blah blah or
Dragon NaturallySpeaking
try all of it sorry kids Google Voice
works the best for me for quality that's
just me if you use another system and
the technology works better for you go
for it but I just use the stuff that I
have that's all built-in no extra
equipment like mics no extra equipment
like extra pricey software I'm good
well let me stop talking about the
technology and start talking about my
process what I did was wake up every
morning and sometimes before I even have
a cup of coffee I would speak 750 words
into the Google Voice and time myself it
got to be where I could speak 750 words
and Google would type it out with 95 to
97% accuracy between 8 and 9 minutes
that's a lot faster than what I can do
with my fingers but I would have to go
back in with my
fingers and do some edits like I said 95
to 97% accuracy I had going to fix
things Google was really good with brand
names and I spoke a brand name it would
know to capitalize it so yeh but if it
was an uncommon name like my own last
name it had no idea how to deal with it
so I had to figure out we go in and we
spell those kind of things but basically
and I did my hand editing I would find
that I would get my 750 words done
between 12 and 13 minutes if I hand
typed the same amount it would take me
between 16 to 20 minutes that's as far
as I've gotten in the 2 to 3 months that
I've been experimenting
so that's the process let me turn to
number three punctuation it's a function
might or not fluctuate as I am speaking
I can say things like period at the end
of the sentence and Google will put a
period there the other punctuation
options that I have in Google Voice
typing are comma, exclamation point, and
question mark. And that's it it's really
limited. Please Google: add a few more
poland's would be nice
semicolons will be great dashes
quotation marks would love to have those
kind of options but do you speak them or
do you not speak them i tried it both
ways I got to speaking for punctuation
marks and discovered two things one is
it slows you down to use the punctuation
words as you're speaking but I found
that I had better clarity as I started
thinking in my head about where the
different punctuation was going to go as
I was speaking that kind of held me up
but to test it I actually did segments
or certain days where I said you know
what nope I'm not going to use the
punctuation. I am
simply going to speak and then I'll go
in with my fingers later and add the
punctuation. This is what I call my
quality improve my quantity improved
However, I really had to go back in and
do a lot of editing a lot and that took
up a ton of time which made it longer
than if I had finger typed it in the
first place so improved quality improved
quality while you're typing but reducing
the quantity on the back end because you
really do have to go in and edit that is
what I found with punctuation I will
continue to use a limited punctuation
the fourth issue has to do with how I
use my body and my face when I first
started I thought you know what I'm
going to be really stoic about this I am
just going to plow through my 750 words
I'm going to stare at a blank wall and
just kind of visualize the words on the
wall big mistake slowed me way down it
was like I was frozen it's kind of like
looking at that blank sheet of paper
what I found so much more helpful is if
I looked around the role that I looked
out the window actually my word count
improved dramatically when I looked out
the window that is the best the second
best is if I just kind of look around
the office while typing the third or the
absolute worst.
I'm just looking at a blank wall and
trying to visualize the words terrible
word quality terrible word quantity
don't look at a blank wall that's what
I'm saying it didn't work for me if it
works for you
Bravo boy I also found that once I
started throwing my body into my talking
it started using some hand gestures and
started being more emotional the words
were coming out faster and the quantity
the quantity and the quality
bullet-proof which kind of brings me to
my last point which is take a look at
youtube if you haven't taken a look at
youtube recently speaking into a camera
gives you an opportunity to use your
body and facial gestures just a little
bit more and youtube has gotten really
good at translating what I say in real
time if I post up a YouTube video I can
go click on closed captioning and in
another form of voice typing Google does
the closed captioning so that's another
voice typing treat that you can look
forward to so these are the kind of
emotional tips and process tips that I
was looking for when I started my voice
typing experiment not so much the
technology ones but yeah voice typing is
here and it is helping me put out more
words per day so to speak I still use my
hands a lot I'm not letting them go
because my hands are really good at
editing after I do my voice typing but
that's where I'm at right now if you
have any tips to help me out with my
voice typing experiment and how to get
better with word quantity as well as
word quality I'd love to hear what your
experience with voice typing and voice
dictation tools has been this is Lorber
