SONGWRITING: HOW TO NOT BE A CLICHÉ - Duration: 2:48.

hey, i'm kat burns, aka kashka.

i write songs for a living.

there are a lot of songs in the world these days, and…y'know.

just a lot of songs.

i sometimes get asked how to not become a cliche, which i think is someone really asking

how not to write a cliche song.

which….could be considered cliche… i don't have all the answers, but i have a few tips.

literally three.

explore metaphors, but interesting ones.

don't just compare love to a rose, that's been done a million times.

use your thinking parts and think outside of the box.

even better is if you think about what you're really trying to say, in a way that comes

from you.

part of being a cliche is sounding like everyone else.

be you. and use a strange or interesting (but not too distracting) metaphor

2. if you don't have a dying burning desire to write about how much you love __so and

so____, then write about something else.

anything else really.

as stated in the beginning of this video, there are a lot of songs in the world.

about 98% of them are about love.

read your lyrics out loud before you sing them You'd be surprised at how much that

changes the way you feel about the.

Sometimes for the best.

Don't read it like a poem though, read it like a shakespearean actor.

for effect.

bonus tip - don't worry about rhyming.

i mean, rhyming is great and an important part of good phrasing, but it's not so important

that you need to compromise your lyrics for the sake of a rhyme.

don't stop on a dime to find the time to rhyme.

(wink)

Hi,

there is an instance in Mahabharata where Yudhishthira who had lost everything to Duryodhana

in the game of dice is been encouraged by sage Brihadasva with the story of Nala and

Damayanti.

The adventures of Nala showed how that king, who was unfortunate with the dice just like

Yudhishthira, suffered greater toil and misery, overcame all those challenges and recovered

his kingdom and his wife.

Todays musical peice covers that part of the story where Damayanti, having failed repeatedly

to find her lost husband, plans a fake Swayamvara.

She believed that hearing about her second marriage Nala would definitely appear.

So the message or the invitation for the marriage was spread across the kingdom very smartly.

In response to which, King Rituparna of Ayodhya arrived with his favourite cook and master

charioteer Bahuka who had a dark blueish skin because he was bitten by a snake, named Karkottaka.

Hearing about Bahuka's culinary skills and the way drove the chariot, Damayanti suspected

if he was Nala in disguise.

So, she sends her sakhi Keshini to spy on him.

Keshini comes back and reports to Damayanti her experience of interacting with Bahuka

and introduces him as 'Purusha ratnam' or in other words, 'Gem of a person.'

'Poomatinotha' is the poetic expression of that reporting , beautifully written by Shri

Unnayi Variyar, in his work 'Nalacharitam', which is around 200 years old.

Nalacharitam is one of the most popular works used for Kathakali, the classical dance form

from Kerala.
