hello and welcome to my how to plumbing YouTube channel my name is Claude Taylor
for those that you didn't know me welcome back
those that don't hope you enjoy the video and if you do give it a thumbs up
and become a subscriber thank you okay we're going to get started on this a
water heater this is not a customer this is a friend actually a family member the
issue they were having the water heater would not light and of course I've done
hundreds of these so when they told me I knew exactly what it was he ordered the
part got the part in and now I am here to call the part for him
the brand of water heater this is this is a state water heater that's the
name-brand of this water heater and I do have two other videos out here on one
covering a rain gas water heater same problem and another covering the
Bradford white water heater same issue
almost the same operating system except for a few changes on the safety device
and the safety device that I'll show you on this one
and it's much different than the Bradford white our aim they have
actually have a small little capacitor on the thermal coupling that actually
goes bad when the water heater is either overheated or smothered with a lack of
oxygen so once we get this apart and start working and I'll show you that
part and right now I know I'm using a crescent wrench to take these bolts off
I do have a nut driver that fits that just right now I'm too lazy to run down
to the truck and get it but I will go get it because I'm going to have to go
back down anyway but for now we just get the further out the way and you can see
me struggle with this a little bit the area in this attic that I'm working in
is very tight I'm only like three feet from the the opening if I'm not careful
I can fall right down the ladder and hurt myself so I have to work real
careful right here in this spot and now it's a wolf early so it's kind of
not too hot but I can feel the temperature starting to rise and that's
the bracket that was holding it in place
see the gas is off long as the handle is facing opposite way of the pipe it's off
and we're going to remove the gas flex line
and we're going to cut the water to the hot-water tank off see it's so tight up
in here I can I can't really even stand up so I have to do my best to get the
camera in there to get a picture of the cutoff valve I won't be able to show you
myself cutting it off but I'll show you after it's cut off
okay right there it's all long as via handles facing the opposite way of the
pipe it's off and with that we're going to relieve the pressure from the tank
now we relieve the pressure and there's no air in the tank so that when we go to
remove the gas control valve we don't have to worry about water shooting out
we will get a small amount because the tank is full but we're not going to get
a heavy rush of water it'll just kind of loop out of here so it'll give us enough
time to remove this and put the other one in place but if you feel safer
draining the whole tank to move it I mean by all means go for it I've been
doing this quite a few times like I said hundreds of times so I'm pretty familiar
with it and check it real close myself
and I'm using the sponge I'm putting it down here in the combustion area opening
because like I said a little water will come out and I don't want any going into
the air cup combustion chamber or on the bottom of the tank so we're trying to do
this job as neat as I can without get water everywhere
and this is the new gas troll valve you can see it comes with teflon tape
already on it so we don't have to just line it up or pipe dope it we're good
and now that I've loosened the gas control valve with the gas pipe I used
it as a tool to remove it to loosen it now I can loosen it with my hands gonna
take it right off and we're going to put the new one in right away you'll see a
small amount of water right there that's about it
screw it in then we're good and now the gas pipe that we took off the old one
we're going to put it on this one and we're going to use it as our tool as our
wrench to put this back on here and tighten it back down
and before I do that I'm going that I did put some true-blue that's what the
pipe dope is called and I use true blue it's really good and strong and seals
the pipe nicely
you can see how I use the leverage of the gas piping to twist the valve and
place and tighten it down and that that was me
well you see right here I'm going to use my channel lock pliers to tighten the
Flex gas flex line down but what you don't see I was able to show you is I
did use back up another wrench to hold it steady I can really get it tightened
and sealed again like I said I'm working in such a tight area if there's anything
on this video that I might have missed it wasn't intentionally and I apologize
and if you have any questions or comments leave blue matter-of-fact
what do you think of water heaters in the Attic good idea bad idea here
you can see where it's cracked right there this is part of the thermal
coupling which is different than any other water heater that I know of other
than stake and once that's crack we know that it's damaged and here's the new one
seals nicely and tight again this is the thermal coupling a lot of you out there
that are familiar with thermal couplings you know that this don't exist on them
only on state water heater that is what they use as their safety device to shut
the water heater down in case any of any problems arrive and if you see the other
videos the Rheem and the Bradford white you'll see that they have their own type
of safety device one is those are not connected to the thermal coupling
you probably notice that I'm starting to breathe a little heavier it's the day is
coming on and starting to get a little warmer out and actually I haven't been
up here that long it's just the temperatures starting to rise rather
quickly here
now okay and I've done this you know quite a few times hundreds of times so I
do remember where a lot of the parts go um but if you're hesitant and not sure
of once you before you take anything apart you're not you're not going to
remember where it went all I do when I get to the point like that as I just I
take a picture of it and when I start putting it back together if I get lost
I'll just look at the picture and it shows me where I'm at so that's just a
little a little advice thanks to technology we can use our phones to do
that this this main burner right here that I'm holding right there in hand if
you look at it it's no more different than the burners you have on a cook
stove where you place a pot and you're cooking things and basically that is
what this is this is a burner and the water heater is a large pot that sits on
top of it and once it gets to a certain temperature depending on where you set
it it cuts off automatically and once the pressure of the water drops of
course this kicks right back on
so those of you that hear that popping sound and your water heaters when it
goes to kick back on it's nothing more than a bunch of calcium on the bottom of
the tank itself the large pot let's call it a large pot it's just like putting
overcooked rice on your stove and you put water in there and it starts to heat
up you start hearing it popping same difference and they do recommend that
you flush your water heater once a year me personally I think if you if you
don't do it once a year
you ask it for trouble because if you start doing it three four years down the
line and you cut it on you may have issues with the calcium buildup so soon
as you get the water heater you want to start that yearly process
the little brass piece you see right there that's called an oarfish you have
to have that on there if you've this one is made for a natural
gas if you ever need to convert your water heater to propane you can change
that orphis out and that will allow you to change to different type of gas
you can really see it's getting hot up here I'm actually looking at the as I'm
editing this I'm looking at the sweat coming off of me
also thankless water heaters leave a comment below what do you think
do you like tankless water heaters or the conventional one like we're working
on right here right now the pros and cons
now the little red one right there where my thumb is that little red rubber piece
right there that's called a grommet and we're going to it's kind of hard
squeezing that grommet into place but once it is in place it's good because it
keeps the combustor area nice and sealed tight so that this is actually designed
to keep gases from flowing out the
bottom of the tank if you remember the old water heaters they didn't you can
get access easily right to the bottom but now they they seal the bottom and
you can't get access unless you do what I'm doing here take it all out okay now
we got that grommet in place and usually when they send it in the box the new
parts the grommet is in the spot where it needs to be so don't mess around
trying to adjust it
and that's just another rubber piece similar to the gromek again just to keep
the bottom sealed and again it's really hard need to try to bend over and get a
bird's-eye view of this because there's no room there's no room for me to
actually can that is very uncomfortable
what you can see now I'm trying to get in a position where I can get a better a
better angle and make it a little easier to work with getting this in here I'm
trying to get it up over the bracket in there but I can't actually I like I said
I can't see it
and you definitely want to get it in the bracket so it could rest properly right
up under the tank like it should don't just try to put it in there any
other kind of way make sure it's in the bracket that it belongs in and okay this
time I have my um I have my nut driver with me
actually this is like a 8 way screwdriver it has so many different
parts to it the flathead Philip head
5/16 nut-driver another nut driver and actually even have some star wrench
parts on it so it's a really good screwdriver
and that's stupid sir that's me turning the water back on to the tank
and I usually I turn the water on before I finish just in case there's any
issues while I'm working on the tank I'll be able to address it the middle
one right there we see my hands that is the main burner that's where all the gas
goes to the main burner
and this one here
when right there that I'm getting ready to hook up that goes to the pallet
that's the gas to the pallet that keeps it lit and all of these two beings you
want to be careful as you bend it so that you don't kink it and cut off any
gas applied to the unit so you just kind of bend it slowly the same with the
thermal coupling and the thermal coupling is the one we're going to put
them on next
and here's the thermal coupling and the purpose of the thermal coupling it's um
it's actually a current that runs the thermal coupling electrical current it
runs through there once the palette is lit the palette
burns up against the thermal coupling and that causes a thermal coupling to
create a small current of electricity that operates the gastro
valve itself and that's the purpose of the thermal coupling so when you do go
to light a water heater you always hold the you hold the gas fly down for at
least a minute or so it allows the thermal coupling to generate some
electrical current to control the gas valve and once that current gets to go
in it's automatically on its own and this is another thing that could prevent
your water heater from being lit if you have a thermal coupling that is not
tightly connected up and top into the crow valve there's no one so what I'm
going to do it oh and I'm going to take the old igniter because the needle
assembly didn't come with a an either switch
okay the new control valve is a little different but that's not a problem we're
just going to squeeze it the igniter switch I was going to squeeze the
bracket sort of get a little snug in place up here and now we're going to
connect the igniter wire that sparks the light into the chambers of the water
heater
and again this is another thing that you would like to check if you can't like
the water heater if there's not a connection here you're not going to get
the water heater to light so just pull back this little rubber piece that I'm
pulling over and check the connection
it's very rare that that happens but it does
okay the gas is back on and what i'm doing here is holding the gas knob down
allowing a little gas to get in the chamber and now i just click the exciter
five or six times real fast and that should get it lit normally in this case
i would look through the glass see if it's lit but again there's no
room for me to hold this and look down in there so we're just going to hold it
for a minute and hope that it's lit and again while we hold it the reason we
hold it in place for a minute hold it down is so that the pilot light can burn
against the thermal coupling and generate enough current to keep it going
on its own okay good it's lit now the main burners on and
there since
I'm going to take this camera and I'm going to kind of pan the little area
that I was working in to give you an idea how kite the space was you can see
it right there it's probably no more than three feet to the edge so I can
easily fell it over if I wasn't careful and then right down here and that
wouldn't have been good
and you can see how when I stood up that flexible duck was right there at my head
and I couldn't get hardly get into that to cut water heater off again my name is
Claude Taylor thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed it if you're not a
subscriber to come one thank you and if you liked the video give me a thumbs up
thank you have a great day
okay today picking in repair
internet Bao name Brandon light
what again what are you to realize
and I've broken so many of these I really knew that the problem was quiet
out there but I did go complete just to make sure it was not the thermal cutting
control that or what have you so it happened to be is we have a profound
itself it's defective and the component is just not working its account
electronic device that operates this water heater so basically anything
belong electronic so what I've done is eyes of those graphic white tags looked
to every time if your plumbers some colors may take notice that on the tag
and scan the warranty
and everything that it takes you call Branford white up and diagnose and
troubleshoot water here what you see me doing here is I am starting to break it
down place all the components right here is the thermal coupling then take a
loose off here I've already disconnected
so the lead wires and this part here and disconnecting is the two
main burner itself and I was saying it's called the 1-800 number usually Chloe
and give them the serial number and the water here crap like they'll let you
know if there is a defect India they will honor the warranty on the water
here and they will send all the components out to you you can either
call Brad white themselves and maybe they have a technical amount but maybe
you have a plumber that comes to repair it
make sure you do a little research first and checking for active life
because sometimes like I said they don't even know the operations of the warrants
on wood
okay now we've disconnected the wires and the tubing and
disconnectedness for
what I'm using here is a we call it a four-way screen graphic lastly six way
- ends where you have flathead each size different size my head and you have no
side as Philips have a small big votes and then when you remove this you have a
net driver which is what I'm standard ravenous
Musketeers cover to the venison
make sure white scriptures below out the information to provide Monet's remember
boys makes me myself and this loss will be immediately out that descriptions is
explained right now I'm working in attic
six out how to parts of Houston course you know Houston Texas
it's very hot you sweat
Indiana right now is probably 90 to 100 degrees
and it can't get much hotter than this a lot of manufacturing in Texas they
actually don't recommend it what it is or anyone's do is put in the Attic
reason being is because they have a safety set off if the water heater
temperature gets so high for your safety they would have automatically cover
water your home Tremayne any explosion
too much heat
he's epidural
case two patrol bound sorry and roll down the
part of the berlin assembly inside
you can't get it anywhere but from Bradford light or any break with white
pillar jiggle one I call the courts carry traffic light now take the serial
number they come on and give them the tag and they just gave me a free
replacement kids replacing mostly people that deal with graft operation
okay we just removed cutting the water to the water off
I the way I do this is and I actually do not drain water heater anybody that
maybe unexperienced I would probably recommend draining your water heater
what I actually do is cut the water to the water heater off and then flip the
relief to oven topsis to relieve some pressure from the water heater itself so
that when I do remove the control valve on the side here the water doesn't come
rushing out of them just kind of blurt out a little bit
because there's no hariom air entertain to allow it to just flow freely out it
senses it could and this is something I do and I do it pretty quick so you'll
see me do this I guess
the first things we're going to do now that we get yeah
disconnect the gas line now I know there's certain areas other countries
but not here that'd be a gas line let's see this flexible gas on here it's not
code approved but here it is which makes it a little easy and convenient so took
me some time so used to the type course required a solid
what I'm going to do here is go ahead and put this adapter back here this
flare-nut iron pipe happens to a having two
and these words I've been doing it quite quite a while me how they go back
together but if you're someone that's doing this project I would just take
pictures of it before you take it apart that way you can always look at the
phone and just put it back just walls
this is the new control of a lower CC right here and what I'm doing with that
is I am prepared so that I can quickly put it back in place via the old one as
soon as a fullest amounts of too much work so right here I'm gonna do is on
the course again just because what I'm doing is I'm gonna actually use this gas
line a rich to turn off the twist off the gas control valve we're going to do
is just go loosen it up and then pull the gas tubing off pipe off and then
there I could other tell v8 to turn it with my haste
she didn't this is what I was talking about relieving the pressure from a
water heater and still fill with water but long as there's no water in the tank
it's not going to rush out
you know now we're speaking graphic whitewater here's thing I like I guess
mostly Bradford water heaters is it actually tells you what's wrong with it
there's a light on it pleases signals just decode the signals from information
that you get inside and that tells you what's wrong with water heater pancake
here's the box this is the new gas control valve and you can see that they
send all the necessary components that you need to completely actually just
completely build it okay of course you won't visit and roll down this troves
temperature of the water heater it controls everything so water heater
tends to overheat this will automatically cut it off
the bonus that we'll be connecting to the burner assembly and this part here
that wouldn't you worry about it I used to use that part to try and diagnose Oh
water heater problems because if you can think links together it'll keep the
Apollo it actually but I would recommend doing that okay taking the overall see
small down working out thanks cool
and the part that you see
next record with the champ on it we called it the critic the dirtbag
everyone has their cookies the purpose of that is to catch any debris or
humidity and that may be in the again because of the weight
the motion disco straight down into the tip leg rather than blowing up into the
bow itself variable between use initiation degrees consensus
okay now that when I'm the tooth I'm going to turn the water till the water
heater back long this way I can make sure that there's no leaks as I'm
working on rebuilding the rest of the Potomac
you
you
and I believe this
battery operated accident fire
so Mowgli the same the
these
and burning fire against the dental building it chainring are just small
delicious
because you do go to them this is why you have to hold the button now for
about a minute give the chance to start generating small amount of electricity
this which is the dome welcome to palate light striker off of the motor assembly
itself
I really wouldn't recommend it and second I don't think the class will give
you the part
and
trying to take that possible stand something that you just take away
any hardware store
those days is long back
see the end of this here we get to the bone right there
that pipe right there goes into a slow slide back in Nia among the water you
can get you
this tendency back there that end of that ball right in there
studies in place
to take
the place Indian women
which is trying to line up the burner to turn the burner tube that feeds the
Agastya burners right here me ha it's good to see the city okay you're
gonna want it to go right in this is this one of you just get that
tubing fed this right and something issue is that the new gas control valve
it's exactly like the old it could be a small small just close it off metal
tubing straightening out my even command has made it to get it fit just right
drink
torture
okay
this assembly door but like the first one then I took off
actually these two jobs in one one video
footage on the first one so what I did is put them both together in the same
process trying to fuse it but we're still back to reassume Allah
everything's
simply door
and Rebecca old days and access to the bottom and you needed
a match whenever to try to Myka what do you know that was very dangerous
these movies reported use today stay for the meal Wow
they started movies what he was like this only about 11 12 years ago they
started they may be new to a lot of people but everything when they first
came out a lot of hot water heaters install yep
the environment actually it doesn't make a difference besides you sticky the wire
on
real close
that's right there going to right there
but
that button anytime you go to like the water here or relight it want to click
that button that's a reset button if you don't click that before you go to
relight it get what heater may not stay lit and it's a sensor device it just in
case you what is heated gets to a certain temperature
turn it off
- back get back one
okay this little button here once you push it in I allow gas to go out to the
burners so that we can relax what are you
we're going to let's go ahead and connect the this wire here he goes to
the thermal coupling if you remember this older water heaters well even some
of the new ones today they some of them depending on the brand they do to still
have the copper
control valve down bubbling but this is Bradford white came
out good that's why you can't just buy a standard don't go
and the reason I'm holding this button down the red button here on top is as
I'm putting this feeling I'm letting the gas kind of float through to kind of
clear the line out get some the air out of there
okay we've got the gas on and we're opening the gas valve ads control valve
itself before we light it and I'm getting the air out the line some air
out nice feature about this brand for white is you don't have to bend over and
look real hard and through the window to make sure the water heater is a lit you
just go this down and you click the clicker square red button right there
yeah that button right there that the square red one that's the igniter that
when you click it yes when you click it it will spark a fire down in the burner
and of course that fire as the gas is going through with at night the black
gas and once we've got it held long enough we'll know that the pilot is
completely lit and we'll stay on once we see the Iranian like flashing right
there you just seen it green light flash there it is so now we know that the
collet is lit
and we can actually relieve the button right now as I said to one of the other
good things about this control valve of the electronic is that the water heater
itself will tell you what's wrong with it and on the side of the water heater
there's a panel with information and directions on how to relight your water
heater so and how to diagnose the problem that you're having okay now
we're going on let's just complete
hello everyone and welcome in this video we'll be covering how to repair the
water heater that's not able to light so that it can produce some hot water I've
done a video similar to this but it was a different water heater it was a
Bradford white and this one here is a rain water heater although they both
operate in a similar manner they do have some components that are different and
this particular one here this green it'll throw you for a loop if you're not
familiar with it at first I wasn't going to put this video out because I felt you
know there was quite a few water heater repairs out there on you know water
heaters not read lighting but one of my colleagues ran into a problem and he had
the same water heater and he called me and he said hey man I've done everything
I could to get this water here to working I replaced the pilot assembly
the gas control valve nothing and that moment I asked can I say hey what kind
of what are you working with and he told me it serene and right away I knew the
problem and I asked them is there a glass tubing in the combustion chamber
they said no I didn't see it I said well you may not have it probably most likely
cursed and you'll probably see glass fragments on the bottom of it
but anyway he was surprised to the fact that so I did go over there
to give him a hand and so happened the supply house gave him the parts that he
needed but he didn't realize that the little glass tubing that held a little
oil in it was the problem and when that little glass too pops it holds a device
in place once it's popped it releases that device and that device shuts down
the water heater and that's only when the water heater is
overheated and the burner is starting to brown out wide well anyway this is what
we're going to do first of all we're going to remove the cover for the pilot
assembly via and the governor and the I guess I was talking at the ending and
you didn't probably didn't notice the star wrench that I'm using and it was a
t20 I believe the size that that's required to remove these screws and
Rheem water heater wrench the others use the small little nut drivers and they do
make these star wrenches where they're but they do have a handle just like the
screwdriver it's not easy to work with but this is pretty handy and I keep all
different sizes with this little little setup that I have here and one of the
first things we want to do once we remove our burner kind of examine the
inside of the combustion chamber we want to make sure that dia bus juice
container is clear of debris and dust because if you have quite a bit of dust
accumulated it'll all cause problems and keep your water heater from lighting
because it will remove the oxygen from the air and they'll kind of smother it
and of course if you have any flame it's going to need oxygen so we want to keep
as much oxygen flowing into the combustion area as we possibly can in
this case the oxygen is coming from up on the bottom of the water heater you
can't see it but it is and this water heater here is in the Attic I know a lot
of you people out there and unfamiliar with water heaters being an attic unless
you're you do live down south where the temperatures are warm
um there are issues with water heaters in Indy attic I mean the idea of having
them up there it's pretty good because of the energy of the same but at the
same time if your attic is not vented properly you
will have issues because you'll have insufficient air getting into the
chambers and this will choke
and like I was saying the insufficient air in the attic will it will cause the
flames up underneath to choke out and what I'm doing here is just kind of
taking a little pin and this little holes and trying to poke the holes
through the where some of this oil from the little crystal that popped in there
just going to clear it up in free some of the holes up and below there will be
a description or URL to a website explaining um issues with water heaters
that I'd recommend you probably check that out if you have a water heater in
the attic and you'll you'll have a clearer understanding of water heaters
in the Attic
right here this world melon hangout that are moving around this is the device to
hold small kind of glass crystal that holds the the safety device in place
again once that device the glass is broken from the over kick it will shut
with that the water heater down immediately it's probably one of them
I'd say probably best safety device that I've seen it works so quick but if do it
will and it does it close a lot of plumbers off because we're used to be a
lot of standard ones where these safety device is built-in on the side are in
the gas control valve itself that little switch back there you continue pushing
down on it and what I'm doing is putting the safety device back in place and
we're going to have to squeeze down on that rod factors and spin it around to
where it will lock in place and now the device will be set and ready
for what water heater to operate and it is kind of tricky especially when you're
working in the Attic and sometimes go ahead a lot of space to that allows
those around so it's got its kind of and and I'm right-handed and this is a
left-handed little easy right position flashlight in the best position so that
can give you the best view that I can give you a spot where this safety device
goes
this is the 50 tice with the little glass tubing with look like little fuse
there's a closer look this picture of it that glares clean clothes oil I'm not
sure what the substance is you can see on the previous one you 18 is not the
same as the one that I'm working on now but you seen the shard glass that was
laying out across okay in place this is what it looks like once it's in place
this is a close-up view this is a picture that I got off the unit and now
it's time to put the burner similarly the columns assembly everything back
that goes into the combustion chamber
this right here oh man I love this this was a great idea that ring came up with
with the gasket seal to uh install back in place I'm going to show you a look
let me show you're more of a closer look where you can see a small little magnet
see little magnets right there okay so once you flip that over and flip it in
place those magnets will hold it right in place and you don't really worry
about it moving around on you so I thought it was pretty clever
see hold it right in place if you've done water tears before you know that
sometimes but this little paint plate back in place can be a little difficult
but they've made this pretty easy with the magnetic gasket it makes a lot
easier holds it in place so you don't have to
fight trying to hold the gasket in place and screwed the plate down
and oh by the way the camera I was using started mine ran out of memory and so
now I'm recording the rest of this with my phone so I apologize the quality's
not there and right here is where we're connecting the igniter
and it's back to right here that's the gas tube well I'm sorry back to the
small copper looking this is the thermal coupling that goes into the combustion
chamber and the thermal coupling the way it works once you get the small poly
part lick the burner it burns against the thermal coupling
and after a minute or so that small thermal coupling starts to generate a
small amount electricity and that small amount like that small current operates
that gas control valve and this bigger tubing here is for the main gas line
where the main burner all the flames are coming out at
and this two delays keep to go in this is the tube that goes to the pilot like
itself it's just a small amount of gas that goes there here to keep the pilot
lit
okay we're turning to the gas to the water heater on right here and this is
the pollak button that we're going to hold down and we're going to hit the
ignited switch right here on the right hand side and right now I'm holding it
down just to kind of get so the air out of the line and get some gas down into
the chamber area because long was this area near it's going to be very
difficult to light so we can get the air out of here
now there's gonna be a few times that I'm going to cut the light off in the
Attic from the flashlight and that's only so that you can see the
palette igniter it makes it a little easier to like to water eat or at least
to me it does CVS when it's lit lighter but I'm not showing you the oh smart
there you go there's spark
and now we need to give it a little gas now that you have seen the igniter
ignite okay now you can see the pilot is lit if you look real close when you
can't see it now but you look real close you can see it's burning up against the
thermal coupling and I you know I guess has held this down long enough and it
should be ready to turn on the main burners and start heating the water
heater up and once that gets to going there we go we're looking at about 3045
minutes for the water to heat up and be ready to use I hope you enjoyed the
video and hope that it was very helpful and if you have a Bradford white water
heater I have a video on that also again same operations different components
thank you for watching
