>>> #BACKTOSCHOOLCOMPLAINTS.
THE ONE TWEETED THAT MY LITTLE
DARLING GOT A PENCIL STUCK UP
HIS NOSE I DON'T EXPECT HIM TO
MAKE ON A ROLL THIS YEAR.
AND COREY TWEETED THEY WILL
JUST TEACH US THINGS THAT WE
WILL IMMEDIATELY GET WRONG ON
WIKIPEDIA.
IT THAT WAS ALL WRONG WITH THE
NUMBER ONE PENCIL?
[LAUGHTER]
>> I LIKE ALL OF THOSE.
NOW, THE SOME REAL TEACHERS WHO
SPEND TIME WITH OUR LITTLE ONES
PROBABLY HAVE A FEW COMPLAINTS
OF THEIR OWN, BUT THAT IS
ANOTHER DAY.
>> YES, BUT TODAY, WE ARE MET
HELPING YOU MAKE FISCAL YEAR
THE BEST ONE YET.
WHO BETTER TO ASSIST IN THE
TEACHERS WILL BE WITH THE
STUDENTS STAY IN AND DAY OUT.
>> SO WE WOULD LIKE TO
INTRODUCE YOU TO A COUPLE OF
THOSE HERE ON THE COUCH IS WITH
US TODAY.
THIS IS THE TEACHER OF THE
YEAR, SARAH PURDUE AND CHRISTEN
TACKA.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.
>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING US.
>> WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT
OF JOKES ABOUT TEACHERS
DREADING THIS TIME OF YEAR WHEN
SCHOOL IS STARTING AGAIN.
YOU REALLY DO LOOK FORWARD TO
IT, DON'T YOU?
>> YES, DEFINITELY.
>> WHY?
>> I AM ACTUALLY ESPECIALLY
EXCITED FOR THIS YEAR BECAUSE
WE HAVE A REALIGNMENT IN OUR
COUNTY.
MY SCHOOL USED TO BE PRE-K TO
FIFTH, AND IT IS CHANGES OF
MIND WILL BE PRE-K, K, AND
FIRST.
SO I AM EXCITED TO MEET A WHOLE
BUNCH OF NEW STUDENTS.
>> YEAH.
OKAY.
SO A LOT OF TIMES THERE'S NOT A
LOT OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN
TEACHERS AND PARENTS, WHICH
MEANS THAT SOMETIMES THERE ARE
MISCONCEPTIONS.
THINK IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST
MISCONCEPTIONS THAT PARENTS
MIGHT HAVE ABOUT TEACHERS AND
THEIR JOBS?
>> I THINK ONE BIG
MISCONCEPTION IS THAT TEACHERS
SIMPLY TEACH ACADEMICS,
READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC,
BUT WE DO SO MUCH MORE.
WE TEACH LIFE SKILLS.
SOCIAL SKILLS.
WE TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO MAKE
FRIENDS.
WE TEACH STUDENTS WHAT TO DO IN
A SITUATION IF THEY ARE BEING
BULLIED.
WE TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO SET
PERSONAL GOALS FOR THEMSELVES.
WE DO SO MUCH MORE.
>> NOW, IT IS NOT ALL YOU.
IT IS NOT ALL
[AUDIO LOST]
>>> WE INVITE FAMILIES TO COME
OUT, OPEN HOUSES, BACK TO
SCHOOL NIGHTS, NOT JUST
CONCERTS, BUT DEALING WITH THE
CURRICULUM, ALSO.
WE JUST WANT OUR PARENTS TO
COME IN TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE.
>> AND I WANT TO ADD TO BE
INVOLVED HOWEVER THEY CAN.
COMING TO EVENTS IS AWESOME AND
IMPORTANT, BUT IF THEY CAN'T
SUPPORT AT HOME BY TALKING TO
THE CHILDREN ABOUT THE RULES
AND PROCEDURES OF THE SCHOOL
AND HELPING THEM WITH THEIR
HOMEWORK, JUST SHOWING THAT
THEY BELIEVE THAT EDUCATION IS
IMPORTANT AT HOME, JUST
REINFORCING WHAT WE ARE
TEACHING AT SCHOOL.
IT IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO
HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH
TEACHERS?
>> DEFINITELY!
IT IS A TEAM EFFORT, RAISING
AND TEACHING OUR STUDENTS.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
>> NOW SEE, I ALMOST THINK THAT
THEY WOULD THINK THAT THIS IS A
CRITICISM.
HOW DO YOU ACCEPT COMMUNICATION
FROM PARENTS?
>> I BELIEVE THE TEACHERS AND
SOMERSET COUNTY ACCEPT
COMMUNICATION VERY WELL FROM
PARENTS.
WE HAVE A LOT OF WHITE SET UP
TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS.
WE HAVE CONNECT ED MESSAGES,
NEWSLETTERS THAT WE SENT HOME,
EACH SCHOOL HAS A WEBSITE, EACH
TEACHER HAS A WEBSITE PAGE.
WE REALLY MAKE AN EFFORT TO GET
OUT THE INFORMATION, AND WE
HAVE AGENDAS THAT WE SEND HOME
EVERY DAY AND THE PARENTS HAVE
TO SIGN UP SO YOU SORT OF KNOW
ON A DAILY BASIS HOW THEY ARE
DOING.
AND WE ALWAYS WELCOME PARENTS
TO CONTACT THE TEACHERS IF THEY
NEED ANYTHING, BY EMAIL,
CALLING, SETTING UP
APPOINTMENTS.
>> SO WE ARE NOT BUGGING YOU IF
>> ABSOLUTELY NOT!
>> I ALWAYS FELT LIKE I WAS
PESTERING THE TEACHERS BECAUSE
I WANTED TO KNOW MORE AND MORE
AND MORE.
>> IT IS THE BEST WAY TO CLEAR
UP ANY MISCONCEPTIONS OR
MISINFORMATION BECAUSE KIDS
WILL COME HOME WITH STORIES
ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED.
[LAUGHTER]
>> OH YEAH!
>> SO REALLY, JUST PICKING UP
THE PHONE, GIVING A CALL,
EMAILING.
AS SARAH WAS SAYING, THERE'S
ONLY WAYS WE TRY TO ENCOURAGE
THEIR COMMUNICATION AND
SUPPORT.
>> WELL, IN PREPARING FOR THE
SEGMENT, WE CAME ACROSS SOME
ADVICE THAT WE WANT YOU TO
ADDRESS.
IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS AND
STUDENTS TO LET GO OF LAST
YEAR.
THIS YEAR IS A FRESH START.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT?
