Seriously Good Old Fashioned Recipe - How to Make an Old Fashioned Cocktail - Duration: 2:45.

We're Adam and Joanne from inspiredtaste.net welcome to our kitchen.

Today we are taking a break from recipes to make a cocktail. It was time. We haven't

shared one in a while. So we are showing you how to make the Old Fashioned cocktail. Which

is one of our favorites. Yeah, so this is how we make it at home, plus we are throwing

in a few tips. There might be flames at the end of the video. There's flames. And we

also show you how to make your own clear ice cube.

So lets go make it.

The cocktail needs a little sweetening — we use simple syrup, but a superfine sugar will

also work. To make simple syrup combine equal parts of white sugar or for a more caramel-like

flavor, brown sugar — on the stove. Heat until the sugar dissolves then cool.

Here's the best part about simple syrup, it lasts for a month or more in the fridge!

Grab a glass then add a teaspoon or two of the syrup and a few dashes of bitters.

In goes some bourbon or whiskey then stir. Finish with an ice cube — more on how to

make these later. Add a strip of fresh orange peel

and if you like them, a cherry!

Now typically, you see this with bourbon or whiskey, but you can play around a little

if you like. We love an aged rum — in fact that's Adam's go-to drink.

Now for some fun — this is definitely optional!

Cut a coin sized piece of fresh orange peel. Wave it close to a flame to gently warm the

oils. Give it a squeeze so that some of the oils spritz out towards the flame. It smells

incredible. Rub the peel around the rim, adding a toasted orange aroma to the drink.

Obviously, this takes a little practice and you really should be careful when doing it!

Now for those clear ice cubes. They aren't necessary at all but they sure do make a cocktail

look beautiful. There are some pricy gadgets that help with this, but we like to take a

more DIY approach. The cubes aren't totally clear using this method, but they get pretty

close.

The idea is to use directional freezing — for more information about our setup and exact

steps, check out the Old Fashioned recipe page on Inspired Taste.

And that's it. Cheers!

Thanks for watching. If you loved this video, we have lots more. Make sure you Subscribe

The Cast Of Melrose Place Has Changed A Lot Since 1992 - Duration: 6:21.

Melrose Place hit the small screen in 1992, featuring a dramatically enmeshed group of

beautiful people who lived in an apartment complex at the now-famous L.A. address.

The 90210 spin-off was nominated for five Golden Globes in its seven season run and

was revived in 2009 with a new cast for one season and plenty of cameos from the original

residents.

So what does the cast of Melrose Place look like these days?

Heather Locklear

After the Melrose series finale in 1999, Locklear moved on to a three season run on Spin City.

The actress has gone through rehab numerous times, and was arrested in 2010 for involvement

in a hit-and-run.

Nevertheless, she's continued to work steadily, appearing on Hot in Cleveland, Franklin & Bash,

Fresh Off the Boat, and in 2016 on TLC's Too Close to Home.

In 2009, Locklear was called back to Melrose Place for the show's revival, where she reprised

her role as Amanda Woodward.

Thomas Calabro

Dr. Michael Mancini was the only character to last the entire run of Melrose Place.

After the show ended, Calabro had roles on dramas such as Castle, Without a Trace, and

the reboot of Melrose Place, just to name a few.

Josie Bissett

As Jane Mancini, Bissett appeared in 172 episodes of Melrose Place, occasionally alongside her

then-husband Rob Estes.

Post-Melrose, Bissett landed roles in several TV movies, as well as on ABC Family's The

Secret Life of the American Teenager, where she spent five seasons.

Bissett has also become a successful children's book author.

In June 2015, Bissett's Seattle home was destroyed in a fire, an experience she recounted on

an episode of Oprah's Where Are They Now?

Courtney Thorne-Smith

Thorne-Smith played Allison Parker, a Midwestern transplant with a serious penchant for drama.

The actress then moved to another hit show, Ally McBeal, then spent five years on According

to Jim, and joined the cast of Two and a Half Men in 2010, a role she held for six seasons.

Vanessa Williams

Rhonda Blair was written off of Melrose Place after only one season.

Actress Vanessa Williams didn't suffer, though; she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award

in 1997 for her role as Dr. Grace Carr on Chicago Hope, and later won for her role in

Showtime's Soul Food.

Williams appeared on several shows before landing the role of Francine West on The CW's

The Flash in 2015.

In 2016, Williams joined the cast of Days of Our Lives as Dr. Valerie Grant.

Andrew Shue

After playing Billy Campbell for six years, Andrew Shue became an internet mogul as one

of the creators of CafeMom, an online hub for all things parenting.

He also co-created Do Something, an organization aimed at motivating young people to take action

through community service.

Grant Show

It was Show's character, Jake Hanson, who started it all, as the bad-boy carpenter who

helped Jackie Taylor and Mel Silver prepare for their wedding on Beverly Hills, 90210,

ultimately becoming involved with Kelly Taylor.

Hanson's character was spun-off of 90210, and right onto Melrose Place.

In 2017, it was announced that Show would return to the soap world as Blake Carrington

in The CW's reboot of Dynasty.

Kristin Davis

Before she was Charlotte York on Sex and the City, Kristin Davis played the pregnancy-faking

Brooke Armstrong on Melrose Place.

In addition to the HBO hit, Davis was the voice of Miss Spider on the cartoon series

Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends, and in 2014, played Ginny on CBS's Bad Teacher.

Laura Leighton

Melrose mainstay Laura Leighton played Sydney Andrews on both the original Melrose Place

and the reprise in 2009.

Leighton, who is married to fellow Melrose alum Doug Savant, also appeared on Skin, Tru

Calling, Law and Order: SVU, CSI: Miami, and more, before landing the role of Ashley on

Pretty Little Liars in 2010.

Doug Savant

Matt Fielding, Savant's Melrose Place character, was at the forefront of openly gay characters

being portrayed on television.

After leaving Melrose in 1997, Savant's next major role was as Craig Phillips on 24, before

joining the cast of Desperate Housewives in 2004, alongside Melrose alum Marcia Cross.

Jack Wagner

Soap opera veteran Jack Wagner played Dr. Peter Burns on Melrose Place.

After the show's finale, Wagner continued acting on daytime TV and reprised his long-running

role as Frisco Jones on General Hospital in 2013.

Rob Estes

On Melrose Place, Estes played Kyle McBride, a role he held from 1996 until the show's

end.

Estes then had recurring roles on CSI: Miami, and Women's Murder Club before returning to

the Spelling franchise to play Harry Wilson on the remake of Beverly Hills, 90210 in 2008.

Lisa Rinna

Before she was at the center of drama on the The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Lisa

Rinna played Taylor McBride on Melrose Place.

Since then, Rinna has popped up everywhere, including Dancing with the Stars, Days of

Our Lives, Entourage, and even QVC, where she has her own clothing collection.

Marcia Cross

Fans of Melrose Place certainly remember the scene in which Cross's character, Dr. Kimberly

Shaw, pulls off her wig, revealing an intense scar.

After Melrose, Cross guest-starred on basically every relevant television program at the time

— including Seinfeld, Boy Meets World, and Ally McBeal — before landing the role of

Bree in eight seasons of ABC's Desperate Housewives.

Kelly Rutherford

Rutherford's Megan Lewis materialized on Melrose Place in 1996.

Post-Melrose, Rutherford had recurring roles on several shows before landing the role of

Lily on Gossip Girl.

Her recent TV appearances have included Reckless, Quantico, and Jane the Virgin.

Daphne Zuniga

Zuniga's Jo Reynolds lived on Melrose Place from 1992 until 1996.

Zuniga later reunited with Melrose co-star Grant Show on the ABC series Beautiful People,

and was in numerous TV movies before joining the cast of One Tree Hill in 2008.

#Chelsea and Conte an immediate test of the new tricks learnt by Arsene Wenger and Arsenal - Duration: 5:59.

Chelsea and Conte an immediate test of the new tricks learnt by Arsene Wenger and Arsenal

The Frenchman has looked to develop his side over the summer after making improvements at end of last season, but the Premier League champions in the Community Shield is not an easy prospect to face.

It turned out that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Arsene Wenger seemed weighed down by obduracy, a man resolutely refusing to learn the lessons his critics felt he needed to heed.

While the rest of the footballing world changed, Arsenal stayed the same.

Until Wenger switched tack, surprised his doubters, and suggested he had been secretly studying Antonio Conte. He adopted a back three, a policy he had ditched in the summer of 1997 after inheriting Bruce Rioch's 3-5-2 formation.

Imitation proved the sincerest form of flattery and the most effective method of combating Conte's system.

Arsenal seemed to line up in the FA Cup final with inferior personnel to Chelsea but won most individual battles, played 3-4-2-1 better and secured the silverware.

Perhaps it showed football's cyclical side. Chelsea's time playing 4-2-3-1 came to an abrupt halt when Arsenal deployed the same system to rather greater effect and beat them 3-0 last September. They go into a rematch with both remodelled.

Chelsea, who are able to unleash an expensive new centre-back in Antonio Rudiger, won 27 of 32 league games playing 3-4-2-1. A May setback at Wembley Stadium can be deemed an off day. Arsenal won nine of 10 after Wenger's spring switch.

As they included three notable scalps – both Manchester clubs and Chelsea – it could be deemed an unqualified success.

Yet Manchester United fielded a weakened team because of a focus on Europe. Manchester City had a goal wrongly ruled out and twice hit the woodwork. The margins can be narrow.

Arsenal only conceded seven goals in those final 10 games which, after letting in 23 in the previous 10, represented a marked improvement.

Players such as Gabriel, Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding flourished as, at Wembley, did Per Mertesacker. Yet, in stats compiled by the website Arseblog, Arsenal conceded slightly more big chances per game against the same opponents with a back three.

One difference was that fewer went in, another that they created 1.3 more per game. They became more prolific, but that was partly due to Alexis Sanchez, scorer of eight goals in those 10 matches.

While Wenger is adamant the Chilean is staying this season and rationalised "its always in your interests, even if you have a short contract, to do well, he may be relying on an unsettled figure.

Sanchez only returned to training on Tuesday and is unlikely to start on Sunday, but the record buy Alexandre Lacazette should. Yet Arsenal's fortunes might rest less on attack than that reconfigured defence.

Whereas Conte had years of experience organising a back three, whether with Juventus or Italy, Wenger does not. His back three has looked frail in pre-season and the experiment of using midfielder Mohamed Elneny in defence has been abandoned.

Their best-laid plans have been unlocked by Chelsea before. First Didier Drogba and then Diego Costa assumed the mantle of the scourge of Arsenal. The latter scored even in the FA Cup final defeat.

His replacement, Alvaro Morata, is neither as physical nor as combustible. "Maybe less of a goalscorer than Costa but he can create more," Wenger said on Thursday.

At least he need not worry about the injured Eden Hazard, while Pedro is a further doubt, and at least Arsenal's best defender is available: Laurent Koscielny's suspension for his dismissal against Everton will be served in Premier League games instead.

He missed the start of last season, which Arsenal began in chaotic fashion by losing 4-3 to Liverpool. It set the tone for a season when defensive issues were only resolved by copying Conte.

Yet change seemed to come more from desperation than inspiration. The test is if it, like Chelsea's switch, will prove sustainable and successful.

Arsenal transfer news: Arsenal an example of why clubs need their star players on long contracts - Duration: 3:00.

Michael Owen: Arsenal an example of why clubs need their star players on long contracts

Arsenal are at risk of losing three of their star players for free next summer after contract talks stalled at the Emirates. Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could all leave the club for nothing having rejected new deals.

Manager Arsene Wenger isn't fazed about the possibility of letting £125million worth of players leave the club. But Owen believes clubs must try to tie players down to longer contracts, although he admits it isn't as simple as that.

"Definitely they should be but it's not as simple as that," the former Liverpool striker told Express Sport.

"You've always got to make a decision when there's two of three years left on someones contract because if you're making a decision and if you're not sure about someone or whatever and you go and give them a new five year contract and then they're not doing great and you pay them telephone numbers for five years, it's a big call." Wenger has insisted Sanchez will remain at the club and will respect the decision Arsenal have taken not to sell him this summer.

But Owen reckons Arsenal are wishing they had the Chile superstar on a longer deal.   "In Sanchez's case, he's just been a delight to watch and a brilliant player since he's been here, he added.

"You would say that from the outside that Arsenal certainly would wish they'd got him on a longer contract even if it's not for their own gain on the pitch but so he's got a bigger value to them as a club.

"I'm sure Arsene Wenger as much as he says that, he'd be keen in the future to avoid it with his star players because we all know he could go for nothing at the end of the season now." Michael Owen is helping McDonald's celebrate 15 years of its Community Football Programme and its longstanding commitment to inclusivity.

Arsenal transfer news: Olivier Giroud still an Everton target as Ronald Koeman says he wants TWO - Duration: 3:06.

Olivier Giroud still an Everton target as Ronald Koeman says he wants TWO more attackers before the end of the transfer window

RONALD KOEMAN wants to add another TWO forwards to his Everton frontline. And Olivier Giroud is believed to still his main striker target once he completes the £50million signing of Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. Olivier Giroud remains Evertons main striker target.

Ronald Koeman says he wants to sign another two attackers this summer. Iceland star Siggy, 27, will clinch his move to Goodison over the weekend after Swans boss Paul Clement admitted he wants the deal wrapped up.

Koeman still has plenty of starlets who could play in attack – as Dominic Calvert-Lewin showed with his Europa League winner against Ruzomberok. But Koeman wants a No9 to play with Siggy and Wayne Rooney.

And Giroud has been a Toffees target all summer after rejecting a move to Lyon when Alexandre Lacazette signed for the Gunners from the Ligue 1 side.

When asked if he was still targeting a striker, Koeman was clear he wants to strengthen up front.

He said: "We need two more front players because if you count the players and count the numbers, we lost somebody and we brought somebody in. We like more competition and that explanation is not so difficult.

Giroud faces plenty of time on the bench if he stays at Arsenal.

Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson is set to sign for £50m over the coming days. Rooney struggled against the Slovakian minnows in both legs of their European qualifier.

And he was eclipsed by Toffees youngsters last night, with Tom Davies looking their most dangerous player before Calvert-Lewins winner. Sandro Ramirez started in attack with Rooney before the Spaniard was subbed for Calvert-Lewin with 20 minutes to go.

Despite the prospect of having Giroud, Rooney, Sandro and Siggy all competing for places in his forward line, Koeman insists that Calvert-Lewin could still clinch a place.

The Toffees boss switched from a back four in the first leg to a 3-4-1-2 formation in the second. The Dutchman said: Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers.

Wayne Rooney has struggled in his first two competitive games back with Everton. Hes strong, hes fast and he scored a great goal.

It was a physical game and 90 minutes that the players needed. We are through to the next round and Im really happy..

Everton will now find out who they face in a two-leg play-off tie on Wednesday – when they will avoid seeded sides such as AC Milan and Athletic Bilbao.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been backed by Koeman to play his part this season. Koeman added: This competition has always been important for me.

I like to be in Europe – its important for our experience. Its good for the club, the players and the fans. Its not easy to reach the group stages but we will do everything to get there.

Two victories, two clean sheets and I think we were better defensively tonight than we were last week. But we know that we can and need to improve in our ball possession. We need to create more than we did..

England beat Venezuela 1-0 in the Under-20 World Cup final after a Dominic Calvert-Lewin first half goal.

I made this video with an Iron Man figurine (SH Figurarts) - Duration: 4:21.

Sir, you sure you wanna keep running away?

Running doesn't solve problems y'know?

I know, Harvis. But it's just too-

Too what?

Too many to deal with, hmm?

Man up, "Whiny Stark"

Hey guys so this week's video is a little different.

Initially it was supposed to be a longer silly video where I "play" with the iron man toy

This guy right here :-)

And y'know, telling some stories and sharing

Life experiences with you

y'know, the usual video with skits and stuff

BUT I decided to challenge myself and change things up to

include special effects.

So because of that challenge to myself- I had A LOT of editing to do and literally

had little to no time to respond to emails nor even relax.

It was literally wake up, eat, edit, sleep and repeat,

I even had to skip my workout!

Benny don't skip workouts!

The editing took A LOT longer than I expected.

I mean had to take pictures of this guy

Photoshop it, adding the glow and edit the background

Then I gotta create the special effects, learn how to create some that I don't know as well

like the flare of the rockets.

Then I had to wreck my head on how to create the effects for free because all the tutorials

I found requires you to purchase something that costs at least $100, which is a luxury

that I can't afford yet.

And don't get me started with the sound department.

We're not even talking about sound yet

SO-

I ended up not having much time left to work with after finishing the editing for the whole

iron man sequence and it's already Saturday-

I don't wanna keep you guys waiting so here it is.

A skitless video.

Sort of...

And to think I had all my scripts and outfits ready.

Right bro?

**RAGE QUIT**

Okay I'm gonna go respond to your emails now-

Hope you enjoy this video that I slaved over all week to create.

Enjoy

Sir, you sure you wanna keep running away?

Running doesn't solve problems y'know?

I know, Harvis, but it's just too-

Too what?

Too many to deal with? Hmm? Man up "Whiny Stark"

Easy for you to say. You're not the one getting chased by rockets

Well actually, I'm your suit so in a way, I am as well

Oh-

Well-

I guess that is true…

Wuss lol.

Oh Shut up!

**BUTT SHOT**

Ow my butt! Bastards shot at my bottom!

Yeah

I felt it too

Okay I just heard myself and that sounded waay wrong

Y'know what?

Let's end this-

Hmm...

I just realized something, Harvis

If we get hit right now

I wouldn't feel anything

*gasp!* You wouldn't!

Of course not. I'm just saying what if I'm not as good as I think

miss a couple of shots

and the targets come hitting us all together at once?

Oh boy

sure sucks to be you

Sir, with all due respect

having me as your assistant?

You will never miss if you try

How about a bet?

Take the shot!

Trust me-

I'm a program!

**Repulsor Blast**

I told you sooooooo~

Argh...

Becoming an Agent: Firearms Training - Duration: 2:00.

The FBI takes people from a whole slew of different backgrounds, and so here at the

Firearms Training Unit we take those people, regardless of their background-if

they're prior military, prior law enforcement-we teach them the same ways we

teach those people who have never touched a gun before in their lives.

If they come to us with experience, we make them better;

if they come to us with no experience, we teach them everything on the fundamentals

of the gun-how the gun works, how their ammunition works-and the fundamentals

of marksmanship, and we get them to leave here being extremely proficient with

that gun.

So when the new agents come to us, the Firearms Training Unit, we

train them on three specific types of weapons.

Their primary weapon, their sidearm, is a Glock 19M; it's a brand new

weapon-that's predominantly what we're going to teach them with.

In addition to that we're going to expose them to the Remington

870P shotgun, 12-gauge.

And then we'll also have them qualify and we'll

teach them on what we call the Colt Pattern Carbine, what most people would consider

an AR-15 or an M-16 variant.

With their pistol, they're going to shoot approximately 4,000 rounds of ammunition

through their pistol.

With the shotgun, they're going to shoot around 120 to 150

rounds through the 12-gauge shotgun.

And then with the carbine, they're going to shoot approximately 620 rounds through the

carbine while they're here with us.

After graduation, as soon as they leave the front gate of Quantico, they have to be

prepared to defend themselves or, more importantly, defend the lives of those who

they've already sworn to protect.

And so for that reason, we put an awful lot of

emphasis on their being competent, familiar with that weapon, so that they can

defend themselves.

Our Alarmingly Close Shave with an Asteroid - Duration: 5:07.

[♪ INTRO]

Life in our universe can sometimes be precarious.

Animals are going extinct, huge asteroid collisions, runaway climate change…

there's a lot that can go wrong.

Two stories that have been in the news over the past couple of weeks really drive that

point home, starting with the asteroid that got a little too close for comfort.

If you didn't hear about it, uh, neither did astronomers.

Until a few days later when they noticed it zooming away from us.

Around 3:30 in the morning Universal Time on July 21, asteroid 2017 OO1 passed within

125,000 kilometers of Earth, or less than a third the distance to the Moon.

And astronomers didn't detect it until July 23.

Not really how we wanna be doing things.

It's not exactly tiny, either.

The asteroid is somewhere between 35 and 75 meters wide, or around three times the size

of a house, and was moving at more than 37,000 kilometers an hour.

If it did hit Earth, the impact wouldn't have been enough to wipe us out like the dinosaurs

or anything, but it definitely would've created some fireworks.

For comparison, the viral-video inspiring 2013 asteroid that entered Earth's atmosphere

near Chelyabinsk in Russia was just 20 meters across, and even that was pretty dramatic.

The Chelyabinsk asteroid was brighter than the Sun as it approached,

could be seen 100 kilometers away, and damaged thousands of buildings.

And that's all despite the fact that it was

still 29 kilometers above the ground when it exploded.

An asteroid like 2017 OO1 hitting a city would be like a small nuclear bomb.

And we didn't even notice it until after it passed by.

That's a little scary, I mean, most of Earth isn't a city, but some of it is.

Right now, we do a pretty good job keeping track of things bigger than a kilometer

with orbits that take them close enough to Earth's orbit to be dangerous.

We think we've found about 90% of them.

But it's really hard to spot a lot of the asteroids that are smaller than that.

And OO1 was especially faint because it doesn't reflect a lot of light.

The problem is, of course, asteroids smaller than a kilometer can still do plenty of damage.

Which is why a lot of scientists think we need to be

putting more resources into watching our backs.

Of course, just finding dangerous asteroids isn't enough,

we have to be able to actually do something about it.

And that's hard, because asteroids are big and they're fast.

It's not easy to make them turn around and go somewhere else.

But NASA and the ESA are actually working on a plan to do exactly that, starting with

an attempt to redirect a small asteroid that is not a threat to us.

It's called the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission.

It involves hitting the asteroid with a small spacecraft about the size of a fridge in 2022.

The hope is that the impact will be enough to change the path of the asteroid, because

even a tiny change in angle while an asteroid is far from Earth

adds up by the time it gets here.

For a future asteroid that's actually a threat,

that might be enough to stop it from crashing into Earth.

So here's hoping it works.

But it's not just life on Earth that's precarious.

As we learn more about other planets and moons, we're narrowing down the best places in

the universe to look for extraterrestrial life.

In a study published this week in Nature Geoscience, researchers announced

that there might be fewer life-friendly worlds than we thought.

Using a new, more advanced way to model climates, the team found that lifeless, icy planets

and moons might be doomed to stay that way for the long haul.

We're pretty sure life needs liquid water to evolve and survive, so if an icy world

is too cold for liquid water, that's kind of a deal-breaker.

But stars increase in brightness over the middle part of their life,

and scientists have long thought that when this happens, it might be enough

to melt the ice on distant worlds and make them habitable.

In other words, it would shift the star's "Goldilocks zone"

where it's not too hot for liquid water, not too cold for it either. It's just right.

In our solar system, for example, icy moons like Europa and Enceladus

could become a lot more life-friendly in a few billion years.

And if this happens to icy worlds on a regular basis, it would mean that there are a lot

of warmed-up places to look for life outside our solar system.

But the results of this new study suggest that instead of gradually warming up until

they're habitable, icy moons and planets might go straight from fully frozen to intensely

hot, totally skipping those friendlier temperatures in between.

The problem is that many of these icy worlds

don't have thick atmospheres like we have on Earth.

On our planet, gases like carbon dioxide hold in a lot of the heat we get from the Sun,

which helps keep the climate more stable.

Without that, a planet or moon relies completely on the energy it gets

from the star at any given moment.

And ice happens to be super reflective.

Icy planets and moons reflect so much of their parent star's energy that without gases

to trap the heat, the star needs to get way hotter to melt the ice than it otherwise would.

Then, once all of that reflective white stuff is gone,

suddenly the much darker water is absorbing a lot of light and heat.

Worlds like these would get really hot, really fast, and the water would evaporate before

it had the chance to support the kind of water-based life that we see on Earth.

So it looks like "the Goldilocks zone" is an even better name than we thought.

Goldilocks will have to keep searching for "just right", and so will we.

When to use "A" or "AN" in a sentence... and when NOT to! (Indefinite Articles) - Duration: 19:37.

Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at when to us "a" or "an".

In these sentences if we remove "a" sometimes the sentence is grammatically incorrect

or it sounds wrong,

or sometimes the sentence is still correct but it changes the meaning. So this lesson

is about when we need to use "a" or "an" in the sentence instead of "the" or not having

it all so that we get the correct meaning. Let's start with...

These are different grammar rules for when to use "a" or "an".

Let's start with when something is unspecified or known. Here are some examples, when I say:

"He has a cat.", or I say: "I'm going to buy a tent.", or I say: "Do you want a beer?"

these are all examples of something unspecified. I know he has a cat, but I don't know this

cat personally, so I just say: "a cat". When I say: "He has the cat", I mean that one and

you know the one I'm talking about. He has the cat. When I say:

"I'm going to buy the tent", the meaning is different because that sentence,

"the tent", "I'm going to buy the tent" is as if I've already decided it

and talked about, and chosen the tent before.

Not a tent. I'll go to the shop, I'll look at them, I'll buy that one.

So this one is unspecified and this one is known. For anybody who doesn't know what the word "tent" is,

we use a tent when we go camping and we sleep outside. We zip open the tent, we sleep inside

there. And the last example, again: "Do you want a beer?" I mean a beer in general, one

of these here, here you go. When I say: "Do you want the beer?" there's only one beer

there, last one.

Moving on, one of something. "I'll have a glass of red wine." That means one. Perhaps

you'd say that when you're ordering at a bar: "I'll have a glass of red wine, please." Number

two here: "He has a daughter." Means the same as he has one daughter. And the next example:

"I've got two apples and an orange." In this sentence we have the number two for two apples,

but we only mean one orange, so we say "an orange".

I can also say: "I've got two apples and one orange",

but this sentence makes sense as well. If you're wondering: "Why is it 'an'

here and not 'a'", go and check out Gill's lesson on when to use "a" or "an".

So pause this video and come back after.

Moving on, looking at jobs now, we say: "She's a teacher.",

"Mr. Smith is a police officer.",

and we say: "Rachel is a nurse." These sentences are wrong if I remove the "a".

"She's teacher", wrong. "Mr. Smith is police officer", wrong.

And: "Rachel is nurse", wrong.

Depends on your native language, but if you don't use articles... For example, in the Polish language

or Arabic, many people speaking English, especially at intermediate level do not use "a" in their

sentences. So it's a very common mistake to say something like:

"She's teacher." And see if you can hear me saying "a", because if you're not used to those articles you might

not even hear it. So listen carefully again this time: "She's a teacher.

" "a" becomes "e": "She's e teacher.", "Mr. Smith is a police officer.", "e". "Rachel is a nurse."

So I say it really quickly. So you might not hear it so easily when I'm saying it, but if you

don't say it... If you say: "Rachel is nurse", I can hear that every time, so remember that.

Number four, religions or ideologies. We say: "He's a Christian.", "They are Hindus." A

quick note here about these capital letters: Because these religions are names, we use

a capital letter there. "Karl Marx was a communist.", and "Margaret Thatcher was a conservative."

Moving on to number five which is social movements or trends. When we're describing that someone

belongs to a group in this way or follows a particular trend, that's when we use "a".

"He's a biker." means the same thing as: "He's a Hell's Angel." These are the people that

ride the Harley Davidson motorbikes, they wear all leather clothes, beards, and bandanas,

and ride around on their bikes in a motorcycle gang.

We don't say: "He's the biker", or:

"He's the Hell's Angel", because that changes the meaning of the sentence.

If I say: "He's the biker", it would be in a situation where somebody said: "Where's the biker? Where is he here?"

And I say: "He's the biker." It's a different meaning to describing what this...

How to identify this man, the group he's in, or... So we can understand his interest better.

Another example: "I'm a hipster." I'm not talking about myself, here, even though I'm

using "I'm". Something I've noticed is that people who are hipsters never admit to being

hipsters. And also we don't have so many hipsters in London as in parts of Canada and parts of the USA.

And for anybody who doesn't know what hipsters are, the first thing that comes

to mind is a man with a beard or a curling stache, perhaps all tattoos on his arms, wearing

really, really tight trousers. But you do get... You do get women hipsters as well.

So they're fashion... They're fashionable and they like the clothes that other people

wouldn't wear I suppose or old-fashioned things that other people wouldn't wear. Another example

here: "She's an environmentalist.", "Sarah is a vegan."

Because she's a vegan she doesn't eat cheese, she doesn't eat anything that was made from an animal.

And last example is: "Felix is a gamer."

Felix is PewDiePie on YouTube, so we can also say:

"PewDiePie is a gamer." Next we've got more examples.

Next use is nouns about a person. Look at this sentence: "Henry is an orphan." In this

sentence "orphan" is the noun, so we have "an" before.

The next sentence: "He's a psychopath.", "psychopath" is the noun.

Before the noun we have "a". Psychopath can be the kind of

crazy person who goes around stabbing people with a knife, can also be the kind of person

who doesn't care to lie, cheat, do anything... They have no morals. They'll do anything to

get what they want. When we change this sentence to the adjective form of this word to psychopathic,

we can say: "He's psychopathic", and when we do that we don't need "a", but if we're

using the noun we need to have "a" or "an". "He's a psychopath."

Another example: "She's an idiot." If we change "idiot" to the adjective form,

"idiotic", again, we don't need "an".

We can say: "She's idiotic." But because we're using the noun we say: "She's an idiot." And

the last example: Louise is a drunk." means that when... When we say somebody is a drunk,

every day they're drinking, and could be they wake up at half past 10 in the morning and

the first thing they do is have some alcohol drink. So when we say someone is a drunk,

here "drunk" is a noun, this is a different, very different meaning to saying... To saying:

"She's drunk", or saying: "Louise is drunk." That sentence means now she's drunk, but she's

not doing it all the time and in the morning.

Let's move on to number seven which is about nationalities. When a nationality is singular

we can use "a" or "an". "Marco is an Italian." We can also say: "He's Italian.",

"I'm an English woman." It's not wrong to say: "I'm English."

And we can say: "He's a Turk."

Do people use the word "Turk"? "Turk" is not considered the most standard, proper way to

describe the Turkish nationality, but it's used informally much in the same way that

an Irish person might be described as a Paddy, you might hear this said about Turkish, that

somebody is a Turk. So we can change this sentence: "He's a Turk" to: "He's Turkish."

What's the difference between the two examples? In the first example here where we're using

"an", "Marco is an Italian", it's like he's one of all the Italians. And if we say:

"He's Italian", of course it still describes his nationality and where he's from, and they're...

Both of them are correct. They don't have very, very different meanings, but a very

subtle difference in the sense that this one means one of a bigger group, and this one

includes the whole group together. Subtle difference.

Number eight, day of the week in general. Now, these sentences here, we... We're not

using them all the time. You need to find a specific thing that's happening so that

you can make this kind of sentence. First sentence is:

"Christmas is on (a) Monday this year."

I said it so quickly maybe you didn't even hear the word "a".

"Christmas is on a Monday this year."

Grammatically I can also remove "a" if I want, the two versions are

correct. I'll read it one more time because it was really fast:

"Christmas is on a Monday this year." What this sentence means

is Christmas is one day of the year, it's always on the

25th of December, but Christmas is always changing what day of the week it's on; sometimes

it's Monday, sometimes it's Wednesday, sometimes it's Saturday. So that's the kind of statement

that people would make about Christmas because it's an important day that people celebrate,

but because the day is almost always changing they might not know what day it will be on

this year. And some days when... When Christmas is on a Monday, for example, this can mean

that more people get time off work than normally, so that's why this sort of statement may be

said sometimes, why someone cares what day Christmas is on.

Another example: "The inauguration is always on (a) Friday."

This is when a new president becomes sworn in to become... To

become the president. And we would say this example sentence because there's a tradition

of this event, an inauguration always happening on the same... Same day of the week, and this

statement might be said because you don't know it will always happen on a Friday.

Number nine, we use "a" or "an" before an adjective in a description.

"Julia has a beautiful smile.", "The boy has a bad temper.",

"The cat has an expensive collar." In these sentences

the adjective: "beautiful", "bad", and "expensive", the "a" or "an" goes before the adjective.

And to decide: Is it an "a" or an "an"? Well, it depends... How you decide is the sound...

The first... The first sound in the adjective.

Number 10, exclamations "What" and "Such". I can say: "What a mess! What have you done?

There's plates all over the place. You've had a party I can see. What a mess!"

I can say: "What a joke! What a joke!" that has a kind of opposite meaning. If I say something...

If I say: "What a joke!" I don't mean funny in the "hahahahaha" way, like, good funny,

I mean: "I can't believe that. I don't like that. I can't believe that." Or I could say:

"What a surprise! So happy to see you." All of these exclamations using "What" need "a".

I can also change the sentence to keep a similar meaning using: "It was such a...",

"I went in the house and it was such a mess." I can also say:

"I can't believe what happened. It was such a joke."

And I can also say:

"It was such a surprise when I went home and everybody was there with balloons and cake for me on my birthday."

They mean very similar, but

different grammar constructions to say the same thing. And the two of them need to have "a".

Number 11, our last example is when two singular nouns are in a pair. When I'm eating I say:

"A knife and fork." I don't say: "A..." I don't say... I don't say: "A knife and a fork."

I don't say two a's because the singular nouns become a pair. I just say: "A knife and fork."

This is not wrong, but you will not hear... You generally wouldn't hear a native speaker

saying it that way: "A knife and a fork." I can think of an exception. Perhaps you really,

really were insistent that you need the two things, you need... You need a knife and a fork,

then it would be correct. But just in general most of the times when we say it,

it will sound like: "A knife and fork." Now, listen carefully to that as well because I

say it so quickly that you don't even hear the word "and", you just hear "n".

"A knife n fork." Another example here:

"A needle... A needle and thread. A needle and thread."

The "and"... The "and" disappears and just becomes an "n".

And the last example: "A bow and arrow."

So, thank you, everyone, for watching. What you can do now is do the quiz on this lesson.

I'll see you soon. Bye.

What Makes a Disney Ride a Classic? - Duration: 6:23.

This week on the Disney Q&A I'm flipping things around.

Instead of answering a question you ask me, I'm going to ask YOU a question!

The Carousel of Progress.

It's a classic!

Space Mountain.

Classic!

Stitch's Great Escape.

Eh, not so much.

Rock n Roller Coaster.

Maybe?

What makes a Disney attraction "a classic?"

I'll be honest, this is an unfair question.

There is no real objective answer, and the range of subjective answers is bound to be

so wide that we probably won't even come to a consensus.

I don't even know if I have a personal answer.

But I feel like it's worth asking anyway.

After all, it's the common argument made whenever Disney announces changes to an attraction.

Someone somewhere inevitably makes the claim that Disney is crossing the line by making

the change because that ride in question is a classic!

Well, what makes a Disney ride a classic?

Is it the theme?

It's age?

History?

Fandom?

Is it a combination of all of those and if so, can a ride be a classic without some of them?

Are certain aspects more important than others?

Let's look at some of the more common answers.

First up, Walt's legacy.

This seems like an easy answer.

If Walt had a hand in the creation of a ride, it's obviously a classic.

After-all he was the man behind it all.

But where does that line get drawn?

Take the Carousel of Progress for instance.

Walt was heavily involved in the creation of the attraction for the 1964 World's Fair.

So much so, that the attraction was eventually renamed to "Walt Disney's Carousel of

Progress"

Yet today the ride is very different from what Walt had built.

It's moved locations multiple times, and has seen its name change.

More importantly, it's had its entire script re-written in the past, it's had its cast

replaced with new voice actors, and last but not least it's seen the entire final scene change.

So is it still a classic, and if so, why?

Does the theme and history of the attraction overpower the significant changes it's experienced

over the years?

If the answer is yes, then we really shouldn't be that upset about changes to other classic

rides, such as the new auction scene in Pirates of the Caribbean.

I mean, if that's ruining a classic like some say, then it's also safe to say the

Carousel of Progress has been dead for decades now.

Speaking of decades, where does age factor into it, and is it relative?

A real eye opening moment for me came just a couple of years ago.

At that time my videos were mainly centered around Minecraft recreations of Disney World,

so understandably my audience leaned a bit younger.

Disney had just announced that they'd be getting rid of the Sorcerers Mickey hat in

Hollywood Studios.

For people my age and older, this was fantastic news.

Many of us saw it as an ugly and unneeded addition to a park that already had a perfectly

good centerpiece since day one.

Yet a lot of younger viewers were really bummed about the news.

For them, the hat had been there as long as they could remember and so for them, Disney

was about to remove an integral part of the park.

On that same note, some younger guests felt the removal of the Tower of Terror in California

Adventure was the removal of a classic.

To others, it'd be laughable to call anything in that park a classic because of how young

the park as a whole is.

Speaking of the Tower of Terror, is that a classic?

More specifically, does the fact that it's based on an IP that itself is considered a

classic, make the ride one?

Perhaps that alone can't push a ride into that category, but maybe it can help.

Journey of the Little Mermaid opened in Disney World in 2012, so it's just about five years old.

The movie however is coming up on 28 years old.

Today the ride is new enough that we can make the delineation between the two, but is it

possible that in the near future, when the opening of the ride itself is pushed from

our minds, we'll judge the ride based on the older IP it's modeled after, allowing

it to become "a classic" decades sooner than if it was an original ride?

Lastly, what about fandom?

Does a ride need a cult following to be considered a classic?

Horizons is considered by many to be a classic Disney attraction, and when it closed in 1999

it was 16 years old.

There are fan pages, t-shirts, buttons, and so much more made in dedication to the ride.

As far as fan following for Disney attractions go, Horizons is up there on the list.

Just recently Rock n Roller Coaster celebrated it's 18th anniversary, making it 2 years

older than Horizons.

So if it closed tomorrow, would the Disney World fandom classify Rock n Roller as a classic

Disney attraction in the same way as Horizons?

My guess is it'd be missed, but no, it wouldn't be considered a classic. The ride has fans,

but it doesn't have a fandom.

I'll be honest.

I don't have an answer for you all.

I don't think anyone will have a definite answer.

Like I said at the top of the video, there are so many variables that go into how we

collectively look at an attraction that it'd be almost impossible to come up with one definition.

My hope wasn't that someone would figure out the secret equation that makes a ride

a classic.

Instead it's that we consider everything that goes into it, so that the next time Disney

replaces a scene in an old ride, or re-themes a relatively young ride and we're tempted

to get on a soap box and decry the ruining of a classic, we stop for a moment to consider

what that even means.

Anyway I'd like to hear what you personally think makes a Disney attraction a classic.

There's no right or wrong answer, and I'm hoping it starts a dialog that helps us think

about what we value in these rides.

Let me know in the comments below, and be sure to leave any questions you have for future

Q&A's down there as well.

Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time!

an honest video (that i will delete soon) - Duration: 2:28.

Ugh. Alright, well I know

this is probably a little bit weird to see me like this.

Usually, you know, every video that I make goes through a filter

that makes me look younger

makes me look more attractive.

All the music, and sound effects I add to make me seem funnier,

But this is the genuine me,

and I'm sorry if that makes you uncomfortable.

So I wanted to make this video because I wanted

to fill you in

on what's been going on with me.

Yesterday, I was in the middle of shooting a video

to release today.

Cutting it a little bit close, but I was totally in it.

I was like, you know what, I can do this

I set out to make two videos a week ,and you know what

I am going to do that.

But halfway through shooting that video,

I sat back and I realized

that video was actually turning out to be a piece of garbage

and It bummed me out, but I was like you know what I can't just release

garbage because I have a schedule to keep up that I promised. I don't want to disappoint you guys

But I would rather just not release

something if it's going to be bad

but I also got to thinking that maybe

I was a little bit overly ambitious with my promise to do two videos a week,

so I came up with a genius plan,

one that I think will help me ensure that my

my videos are up to my personal standards.

And hopefully you will like them as well.

And that plan is for me to release

not two videos a week,

but one video a week just one video every Friday

nice and simple. I said Freh-deh really weird.

I think it would make my life a little more enjoyable. I think it would keep me

from going completely insane and burning out.

Not in a car. Not burning out in a car, but just like, you know

mentally and physically

drained. So I hope you understand, and I hope you're cool with that.

Umm...

So, my next video is going to be

released in seven days from now and

I could not have worded that any other way

'Cause it would have just sounded like I was

Samarah from the ring

So I'll see you guys next Friday.

Seeyoulaterbyeguys.

Press a like!

Turning an Insert for a Cello Anchor on the Table Saw - Duration: 3:09.

I have a friend who is a cellist.

To keep the cello in place while playing, cellists often use an endpin stop or anchor,

which is basically a strap that has a cup shaped piece for the cello's endpin on one

end, and a loop that attaches to a chair's leg on the other.

This cup is sometimes made out of metal and sometime out of plastic.

The metal ones tend to damage the endpin, and the plastic ones, well, get damaged by

it.

So I wanted to make her a wooden insert to go in the anchor so she should use it again.

I had this piece of very hard Brazilian Walnut which I think will last pretty long.

The insert, which will look like a small cup, needs to have a hole in the middle.

Because I only had a spade bit the size I wanted, and those don't leave the bottom

of the hole flat like forstner bits, I decided to drill a hole all the way through, and glue

it to another flat piece.

I also made a sacrificial pine piece with a bolt running through it, so I could so I

could use a drill to turn the work-piece.

I glued the stack together with plenty of glue, and left it to dry.

The accuracy here is not critical.

You'll see at the end why it's actually a good thing if the hole is not perfectly

cantered.

Once the glue dried, I could turn the work-piece and make it fit into the endpin anochor . I

don't have a leave, so…

I used a drill my new table saw.

It looks like I'm not even touching the blade, but it removes quite a lot of material.

Turning it was so much fun that I was carried away a bit and turned it a bit too small.

So I made another blank.

This time I was more careful and took my time to keep measuring and verifying that I'm

not removing too much material.

When I got closer to the final dimensions, I switched to a chisel to so I could be a

bit more precise.

As I got to a good fit I cut off the part I needed on the table saw.

Before making the cut I made sure that I won't hit the bolt inside.

And then it was just a matter of cleaning up a little bit.

When I did the glue-up I said that it's not crucial to get the hole precisely in the

middle.

This is because now I can orient the insert in a way the thicker part will be on the anchor's

far end.

Hopefully this will give a little bit more material to wear through before I have to

make a new one.

Till next time, thanks for watching
