Defence style in Table Tennis. Is it hopeless? Whom the defense play will suit? ENG SUB - Duration: 12:33.

Hello! My name is Aleksej Sypachevskij.

Now I'm going to discuss one important question about so called futility of defense.

It's very popular topic of discussions on the Internet and so on.

Defense is horizonless, offense is the best.

Defense has no chance. Joo Sae-Hyuk plays one, Ma Long plays another, and so on.

Defense is so hopeless, that Hyuk hasn't become World champion, just some World vice-champion.

About futility, it's important to establish against what exactly it's perspective or not,

because there is no spherical perspective or futility; as perspective, or its absence, is always against some supposed result.

For example I may have perspectives against election of the president... of some country, whatever.

I may not have perspective against no reason in particular, there must be some result, to speak about perspectives against this result.

So, perspective of defense against what exactly result we are speaking of.

If to speak about perspective of defense against majority in the world, and in Top-10 best players there would be 7 defenders out of 10.

Well... in such case defense is really horizonless.

If you are a coach, for example, and want to prepare 7 players, which would take places in top ten, don't reckon on that they would be defenders.

If you are customary table tennis player and don't worry about world top ten, you have completely nothing to think of defense global leadership or its absence.

What difference does it make to ordinary table tennis player who plays for himself what is happening in the top ten?

I'm a player and the positions of Hyuk and Ma Long don't really factor into my results.

Neither into me, nor into somebody else, Hyuk and Ma Long have no influence.

Let's take other result against which we may follow perspective of defense.

For example wins at amateur level. This result is much more interesting in practical sense for ordinary tennis players to view.

Not for Hyuk and Ma Longs with their coach, but for ordinary non-professionals at any level, or even not for non-professionals.

So we will view defense perspective at such play level.

Moreover, I don't think that Hyuk, Ma Long and their coaches watch my videos, so I have no reason to talk about them.

I will better talk about those and for those who watch me.

As for defense perspective at this level.

Let's walk through lower amateur level. I think that most viewers play about this level.

What is the main point of playing table tennis at this level?

The point of this level, according to our topic, is that at this level there are lots of unforced errors.

Because of lack of experience, poor technical skill or their absence, players always make mistakes on their own.

Majority of unforced errors and very few good effective attacks or something else.

It's not a surprise that if at such level there are unforced errors and technical mistakes,

and those players who at least keep the ball on the table and don't make such mistakes, will have much profit and outplay many opponents.

By the way, in reality we observe exactly such situation.

At lower levels, when defender...

well, defenders may also be different, who always make some tricks, want to attack somewhere and play some difficult serves.

They also make lots of unforced mistakes. There may be and such defenders.

But if defender centers on returning balls on the table, without various fancies, tricks

and super heavy underspins, which would make Ma Long overstrain himself.

If defender manages to return balls over the net, he has many chances to win only due to this.

Because he centers on not making mistakes and at very least returns the ball over.

But his opponents without appropriate technical background and experience will always fail and lose.

We really observe such situations in reality, because at such levels defenders have more wins.

Of course with higher level, defender has to widen his range, and to always use simple returns, he must learn something new to score more points.

For example if to come to Denis Kalachevskij level, at such international level, simple returns will not be appropriate.

And Denis has to, and he acts, make something to score points.

But speaking about passive defense, just returns without attacks,

at professional level passive defense may be quite good variant.

Some of you may think that I concoct it.

But in reality, only those who don't visit tournaments, don't see what happens there and how different players play, may think so.

But having visited many tournaments, having seen much and even having played with many players

I may say that there are many defenders at professional levels. I saw them, met and played with them.

The matter is that there are very few players and you may rarely met them, because coaches prefer preparing offender champions.

Though it's clear that there is not enough champions for coaches and may be it's not necessary for every coach to think of it.

They may start from easier tasks and at least train ordinary skilled players.

Well, in such defense style we have really few players,

but not because of futility, but because coaches think that it's better to create offenders,

and players also think that defense is horizonless and want to play in offensive style.

So not everyone should play in offensive style and not everyone should be trained as offender,

as naturally we are all different.

Someone looks to offensive style, someone to defensive,

someone to mixed style, like Tel'noj or Kalachevskij, who both attack and defend much and neither is dominant.

But not about this.

Let's come back to defense perspective or its so called futility.

For those who watch my videos, and I remind, that Ma Longs and their coaches will not watch them.

For my viewers, defense is of course perspective and sometimes is more perspective than offense.

One more time, I'm not telling that everyone should play in defense style.

I'm telling to pay attention to yourself and what you look to, and play in appropriate style.

It's the best way to achieve the best results.

And the progress will be made quickly.

It's not my inventions and the science investigated this question deeply to make such conclusions.

And when I worked in this question, I worked in that different styles are for different people.

So you should look closer to yourself and point for what you have a taste.

And not think out that "I want to be like Ma Long, 'cause I like to play in the same style".

Well, if you naturally have the same tastes as Ma Long, then yes, you have to play in this style.

But if naturally you have opposite tastes and skills, so you have to...

I don't force anybody, just say what is better, more effective and successful.

There will be more efficiency and effectiveness, if you will follow your natural tastes.

If you are likely to play as defender and you have such skills, then better play in defense style.

And about perspective of defense at lower play levels, I remind you and make conclusion, that at such level this style is even more perspective,

because all opponents are up to make an unforced error and technical mistake.

And if you instead of making technical mistake just return every second ball on the table, you have profit.

You return the ball on the table, and they create some damn thing every other time on their own and hit the ball on their side.

Liverpool's Naby Keita problem and how the Reds will solve it

Jurgen Klopp gained a reputation as a problem solver during his time in Germany; a problemlöser , in his native tongue. After Liverpool have spent the summer losing more battles than winning them, it is something their manager must do once more.

Deciding against a third bid for Naby Keita, after spending the opening month of the transfer window building towards a second offer of £66million, has presented the Reds with an almighty headache.

The celebrations of Champions League qualification have been followed by a sizeable hangover. Having found themselves this deep in their pursuit of the Guinean, the club should expect criticism for turning back around and thrashing for the shore.

Once they arrive there, the reality will hit them. The summer has not been as progressive as it should have been, and it leaves the squad lacking the improvement and depth needed, as things stand.

A club record deal to bring Mohamed Salah to Anfield was a good start, while the signature of Andy Robertson was always likely to be done without much fuss given Hull Citys relegation.

Dominic Solanke is a smart acquisition for the future, with a hint of the now, and convincing him to swap London for Merseyside could represent a coup.

Yet the two big deals of the window have both ended, with the only hope of resuscitation resting upon the selling clubs, RB Leipzig and Southampton, changing their stance.

So Liverpool have been presented with a problem. The player regarded as a transformative one in Klopps side is set to remain in the Bundesliga. That is a big hole to fill. A big dilemma, too.

It has become clear over the past month that Klopp views Keita like no other player. While a midfielder could potentially arrive in his absence, there will be no alternative.

Twelve months ago, he was no more than the latest to walk a trodden path.

The midfielder became the seventh player to swap Salzburg for Leipzig, two clubs energised by drinks company Red Bull; another blushing bride in a marriage of transfer convenience.

One year on, the 22-year-old is regarded as one of Europes most promising young stars. Liverpool cannot simply take the £66million and find his replacement, because one does not exist.

The Reds intend to revisit their interest next summer, when it is believed his contract sees him become available for £48million.

Spending big on another midfielder betrays Klopps desire to see him in red, but it is clearly a position Liverpool wanted to strengthen.

The question is whether Keita was viewed as so special that he would have simply been a signing that had to be made, regardless of the make-up of the squad. If not, then Liverpool have a problem finding another midfielder.

If so, then Liverpool – Klopp and FSG in particular – have a problem in justifying going far, but not far enough, in an all-or-nothing chase.

The January transfer window. Liverpool could sit tight this summer and see how the season develops in its formative months. A risky strategy, given January could see them out of title contention and out of the Champions League.

But so could Leipzig. Die Roten Bullen are looking to establish themselves as Germanys second club, with the aspiration of eventually overthrowing Bayern Munich as the top side in the country.

Yet Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and Schalke have all attempted similar over the past decade, only to see the cyclical nature of the Bundesliga ruin their plans.

There is no guarantee Leipzig can continue their rise. At the turn of the year, six months from potentially losing Keita for £48million, the landscape could look different.

Klopp and Liverpool will not spend money to simply appease outsiders, but the money they had hoped would be moving to Saxony is now sat in their back pocket once more.

Though they will pursue Keita again, the option of unearthing another midfielder in his mould is there.

He is thought to be unique; a player to make statisticians salivate and opposition defenders sweat and sob. He intercepts, he shields, he creates, he passes. Keita is everywhere, every time.

Any decision to go for an expensive central midfielder would have to replicate either his defensive abilities or attacking prowess.

That comes at a price however, and would be a hefty one for a player essentially second-choice. Such plans have rarely worked out for the Reds in the past.

Klopp is not a manager who often believes in stop-gaps, but his first signing as Liverpool boss was Steven Caulker on loan from QPR.

Circumstances have changed since then. That came in January 2016, three months into the Germans tenure on Merseyside, the squad still resembling Brendan Rodgers more than his own.

Yet in the insistence of growing the squad further, there could be the possibility of bringing a player to Anfield on a short-term deal; be that an ageing player available for little or nothing, the Gary McAllister for the millennials, or a prospect on loan.

Bayern Munich have recently admitted they would be open to letting Portuguese star Renato Sanches leave the club for a season, while Nigel De Jong and Thiago Motta are both over 30 and have a year remaining on their contracts.

A short-term outlook would deal with the problem for now, and would keep the door open for Keita next summer. The Philippe Coutinho reinvention continues.

Despite Barcelonas interest in Coutinho, Liverpool remain insistent he will not leave this summer. Indeed, to even contemplate it now, after the summer so far, would be ludicrous.

Klopp utilised the 25-year-old in a central midfield role towards the end of last season to devastating effect, with the boss admitting he would seek to play him there again.

The arrival of Salah could free up Coutinho in a deeper role, one that could have been occupied by Keita.

Likewise, Robertsons signature could allow James Milner to push higher up the field in his preferred position, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also pegged as a midfielder long-term.

Liverpool are on the brink of a bad transfer window. Failing to sign Keita or van Dijk, with suitable replacements identified and purchased, would leave the squad stretched. The opportunity to progress after securing Champions League football would be missed – badly.

That, then, should firm up the Reds resolution to strike a deal with Southampton for their Dutch defender.

Suggestions remain the Saints will not sell; the South Coast club are seeking to integrate their centre-back back into the squad next week, after a week of training alone.

But though Liverpool must tread carefully, they must do so forcefully and ensure two, rather than one, of their big targets are snapped at Melwood leaning, smiling.

If not, then there wont be many smiles on the faces of the fanbase – and rightly so.

The Spanish international posted a video of himself in his old kit. And with the Blues returning from their pre-season tour, Costa is still no closer to an Atletico Madrid return.

Following his public row with Antonio Conte, the Spanish international has been intent on joining Atleti despite their transfer ban.

But after posting a video of himself in his old Rojiblancos jersey and making no secret of his intentions, he is starting to feel let down by the club.

There are other interested parties in Costa, 28, and Spanish outlet AS  claims he will ask agent Jorge Mendes to pick up the phone if he does not get encouragement.

Atleti are trying to sign their former striker but will not be able to register him until January. The Brazil-born goalscorer is happy with this arrangement, even though it may hurt his World Cup chances.

Costas relationship with Antonio Conte hit rock bottom at the end of the season.

Costa has been training alone in Brazil as the Blues return from Asia.

Costa seems to be preparing himself for an earlier return to the field in case the move falls through as he steps up his training programme.

The Chelsea squad are due back at Cobham tomorrow, with the hitman and boss Conte both keen to avoid an awkward situation.

Both parties had hoped to sort out an exit during the Far East tour and will now try to speed up the process. Costa does not want to return to Conham after being told he is free to leave.

Costa stepped up his personal pre-season fitness regime.
