Today's top story is a follow-up on the idea of building a convention center in Show
Low.
The Show Low City Council recently approved contract for a consultant to conduct a $25,500
feasibility study to determine if a convention and events center would benefit Show Low.
This will be the third feasibility study on the subject since 2016.
However, this study will incorporate the sports tourism into potential designs.
Renewed interest in the idea came about when a private party stepped forward to offer financial
support if the study includes youth sports and a high-altitude training facility.
The total cost of the study is not to exceed $25,500, $10,000 of which has already been
secured by potential project partners.
"The sports tourism industry is very exciting … first of all, sports tourism — it's
recession resistant," say Economic Development Coordinator Steve North.
"Research shows that youth and amateur sports is the fastest-growing segment of the sports
tourism industry with $15 billion spent annually in the U.S."
Some council members questioned the need for another study and eventually agreed that the
idea is worth researching further.
The study is to be conducted by Sports Facilities Advisory (SFA), LLC, of Clearwater, Florida,
who are professionals in "knowing what it takes to create successful sports and recreation
developments," according to their website.
Once the study is completed and reviewed, additional steps including include public
comment and input will be part of the decisioning process.
The study will also provide funding options.
