It's hard to know until you walk in the patient's shoes, exactly what they feel.
Some people don't want to stop smoking, they don't want to give up their unhealthy
diet and their unhealthy lifestyle.
When I went for my routine check-up at age 60, my doctor says, 'Well, your glucose is
up and you're pre-diabetic.
I want you to have a glucose tolerance test and start taking Metformin.'
And I said, "I'm not sure I really want to do that."
My wife and I went on a journey that lead us to a low carbohydrate, Mediterranean style
diet
Me seeing the ravages of Type 2 diabetes and peripheral and coronary atherosclerosis, I
just knew that this was something that I had to do.
I lost 26 pounds.
Over that period of time, my pre-diabetes went away.
The other thing I've done is I've taken advantage of the buildings that I work in.
It has five flights of stairs and so every day I come to work, I walk up five flights
of stairs, take a couple down to my office.
Just that simple measure of changing my lifestyle and my diet avoided me from becoming diabetic
and also avoided me from having to take medication.
It's easier now to tell my story to patients and let them see that what I've done and
let them know that they can do it if they try.
