The principles of animation +. Follow through and overlapping action (practice)

Hi! I'm Vaggelis Karadimas of vktoons and I'll show to those of you interested in animation

animated examples about follow through and overlapping action.

So, today we'll take advantage of examples we've already used in previous episodes.

Besides, as we have already said,, the principles of animation, ofter co-exist in a scene.

First, we'll watch the example with overlapping action.

We'll watch the shot with the in love frog

which we created in a traditional way and we shot it in AnimaShooter,

and we used it to talk about the principle of straight ahead animation.

Let's watch it once again.

Now, look carefully the flower in the frogs' mouth.

We're interested in it's move form the frogs' left - right as we watch -

towards the opposite direction.

Observe the move of the leaves and of the stem,

which tries to remain to the side where it started moving

and their small movement to the opposite side,

when the frog stops it with his mouth.

The exact same happens when he turns it to the other side.

Finally, when he sucks the flower for a frame the leaves make

an imperceptible move forward

tending again to their previous position.

You can read more on overlapping action and on follow through

in "The Animators Workbook" by Tony White from Doudoumis Publishers (in Greek)

(Instructions given to Greek audience to purchase the book with a 25% discount).

Now, we'll look into follow through, using the example with the volleyball player.

Perhaps you remember that we used it when we showed squash and stretch.

Of course, we'll add some more frames, in order to clarify things.

Now, we'll ink over the pencil on the additional frames and then

we'll past all of them in AnimaShooter to render our shot.

The shoulder turns back and pulls the elbow.

When the shoulder stops, after a while stops the elbow

and transmits the action to the hand

Right after that, the shoulder moves forward

and drifts the elbow, while the hand turns back, following the previous trend.

Shoulder gives the maximum of energy to the elbow and the elbow to the wrist

and to the hand.

After hitting the ball, the shoulder stops

and after a while the elbow stops too,

which turns downwards, as well as the hand right after,

until they settle to the normal position a few frames after.

That's all for follow through and overlapping action.

Now, we'll take a break for August.

This series will continue on September

but during our vacation will prepare a better program for when we return.

Yet, "like" this video, share it

subscribe to our channel, in order to be... ready for September...

and then we'll watch the rest of the animation principles.

Have a nice rest of the summer!
