Imagine a journey to a

charming French villa and winery.

Now picture that winery in the little Wilkes County

community of Traphill.

Roaring River Vineyards recently celebrated it's

one year anniversary and it's become a popular

destination for wine enthusiasts and even guests who

want to spend a night or two.

[upbeat music]

[speaking French]

- [Deborah] In English that's welcome,

life is good and we're happy to receive you here.

Josephine is referring to their vineyard and resort

on the east prong of the Roaring River,

which was inspired by her childhood home in the

French countryside.

- It's like all of a sudden you're in this back road

and you come upon this beautiful winery and it's just

in the middle of nowhere so it's really nice.

- I think of our place as like a rustic resort.

We have everything that someone who wants to get away

from it all might want to have all in one place.

- We drove up and we came in and they had the wine

tasting available as well as the restaurant.

So we decided to sit down and try the food and

drink some wine.

[upbeat music]

- It's really neat that the Yadkin Valley wine industry

itself is able to be in this area.

I think it's a given that it's placed real well

and people will enjoy when they come here,

they'll have a good time and they'll enjoy what they see.

- Over 13 years now we have about six and a half acres

of eight different types of grapes that we own

that we grow on the property now.

Norton, Chardonel, Chambourcin, Traminette,

which are the hybrids, but then we have some Vignette

Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cab in smaller acreage.

- I'm here with the ladies.

We're good friends and we do this every so often

and we just decided to kind of make the rounds and do

wine tastings and this was top on our list today.

- [Deborah] After a wine tasting, guests can enjoy

lunch at the restaurant appropriately named

Shay Josephine.

One can relax in the dining room, or patio dining is

available, overlooking the river.

- Oh it's so peaceful.

The sound of the running water that's next to where

we're eating is so peaceful and so relaxing,

it's just gorgeous.

- Hi folks, how are ya'll today?

I see Josephine is kind of telling you a little bit

about the winery today?

- Well the restaurant is, at this point,

open during our tasting room hours.

And we sever small plates during that time,

we have a cheese plate, [mumbles] plate that can be shared.

It's large enough for two.

And then we have different kinds of paninis with

some sides.

And we also have flatbreads, there different flatbreads

and we also offer desserts.

- You come, stay here, you have food, wine, beer,

whatever you don't have to leave the place and just

enjoy a nice quaint relaxing weekend.

- [Deborah] If you decide to spend a few days at

Roaring River Vineyards, no problem.

They have accommodations conveniently located on site.

- So we have three units, we have the upstairs unit

that sleeps eight and that's called Cedar.

And then downstairs I remodeled the entire downstairs

into two separate units and each is a three room

suit with a bedroom, a little office area, a bathroom.

- First of all we believe it's a perfect destination

because if you come here you can actually spend the

whole weekend with us, there's no need to go

anywhere else, with our restaurant, our food, wine,

beer, accommodations, beach, spa, we believe you can

come here and spend the weekend and not have to

venture out.

- I never thought something like this would come into

the area.

A place that had this much to offer this close to

something we always loved and enjoyed, Stone Mountain Park.

- I think it's important to leave the city and get

out into the country and breathe the air and feel

the breeze and disconnect for a while and actually

just spend time with people you car about.

And get away from the hustle and bustle.

- The place is beautiful, it's a place to relax,

it's a place to leave your worry behind and just

be in the moment and enjoy the moment.

- [Deborah] Roaring River Vineyards is located at

496 Brewer Mill Road in Traphill.

That's in Wilkes County.

The tasting room is open Wednesday through Saturday

11 AM to five PM and Sunday from noon to five.

And remember, they also have a delightful restaurant

and even lodging.

Exploring Mon Land | Home to Thailand's longest wooden bridge | Coconuts TV - Duration: 10:52.

Deep in the hills of Sangkhlaburi district,

you'll find a quaint village home to one of Thailand's most vibrant ethnic minorities

and the people responsible for one of the country's most unusual architectural achievements.

We wanted to learn more about this multi-cultural outpost,

and most importantly, explore the longest wooden bridge in the country.

It's our first morning in Sangkhlaburi

I'm starving, first thing I saw was kind of these pancake crepe-like things,

And they have some coconut in the middle,

And decided to go check 'em out and try, so here it goes.

It actually tastes something like a [inaudible] and a pancake.

What's a morning without some coffee? Let's check out the shop right here.

What's a traditional Mon breakfast?

This is a kind of Mohinga (fish and banana leaves) for breakfast every morning

Some people may prefer to put different spices and tamarind and stuff on the dish,

But I don't usually do so well with spice so I'm just kind of taking the simpler route

But it's really good.

Juices are starting to flow,

I'm starting to wake up,

I'm ready to start talking to some people and get around this really unique town.

Just thirty minutes from the Myanmar border,

Sangkhlaburi town sits on the edge of Vajiralongkorn lake, with a predominantly Thai town on one side,

and an ethnically Mon community on the other.

The area attracts people with people with its handmade products, idyllic views and local charm.

So we're cruising the old part of the Mon village

and I came across these guys turning it up early in the morning and drinking;

Could be Thai whiskey, Burmese whiskey, some sort of concoction that includes this plant right here

It kind of adds to the aroma of the warm whiskey drink for breakfast.

Can I try it?

Here it goes.

In post World War 2 Burma,

the government branded the Mon as sympathetic to anti-state resistance, so they violently destroyed their homes.

Fleeing ethnic strife and religious persecution, a group of about 16 Mon and 2 monks settled in Sangkhlaburi in 1949.

Right now we're headed to the [Inaudible] temple.

It's actually named after the monk who founded the temple and built the bridge and the whole town.

Along the way up here, we met a really interesting guy named Don.

He speaks great English and he has a great idea of the history of the town and Mon history as well.

Let's talk to him and see what he says.

Here we go.

So Mon people and Thais look pretty similar, but what are some of the main differences, if any?

I think the main difference is language, other things are quite similar like

they are both Buddhist, and the root of the culture is quite similar.

When the former Mon came here,

they are not different people,

that's why [inaudible] says that Thai, Lao and Mon cannot become Christian

because you are from Siam,

so this is the kind of example where we are quite similar. Do people there feel the urge to go back to Myanmar?

Have you been back? Do you regularly go back?

For my generation or the new generation, we have become a part of Thailand,

a part of its community, it's like we were born here and grew up here.

Everything we saw here is like our home,

not like my mom and grandma's generation,

It's for sure that people like to go back all the time.

But for the new generation, after me, we love it here I think.

So can you tell us about the history of the Mon bridge and what it means to the Mon community here?

The former big monk [inaudible],

he built that with Mon labour with the old Mon knowledge without high technology

and is the longest wooden bridge in Thailand.

In Thailand we have [inaudible] on all wooden bridges and is the second longest in the world.

The longest in the world is from Burma in [inaudible] area near the Mekong river, but this one is more beautiful

because I'm proud of that and that's the reality.

In the 80s, authorities flooded Vajiralongkorn lake to make way for a dam.

This meant submerging the old village and several Buddhist temples.

The Mon bridge was constructed to allow easy access between the new Mon village and the Thai town of Sangkhlaburi.

So I just attempted to drive the boat underneath the Mon bridge and it didn't go very well.

I got him to babysit me

But still got a beautiful view of the bridge,

So we got an interesting day so far, but it ain't over yet.

We got introduced to some young musicians who play traditional Mon music

Now I'm gonna check out what that's all about.

What's a party without some drum and bass?

A crocodile guitar, a bass drum you can hear from miles, think I was still feeling that whiskey.

Early morning on this 400-metre long bridge is the perfect time to experience classic Buddhist ritual of giving alms.

The community comes out to support the monks who live at the temple, which has long served as the spiritual pillar of the village.

It's a local tradition that has even become a tourist attraction.

So I thought I have this nice lady roll me up a leaf of betel nut

She made it sweet with some coconut inside so here goes breakfast

There's a leaf in my mouth [8:26 - 8:28]

I taste the sweetness, tastes a little bit like..

I don't really like the sweetness

I do not need no sweets on it baby give it to [inaudible]

Spit it out man

Can I spit it out?

Yeah

It's been an amazing 48 hours in Sangkhlaburi

Great food, cool people, even better landscape

But what would a visit to Sangkhlaburi be without jumping off the longest wooden bridge in Thailand?

Here I go

That was actually kinda gnarly

Give me your thoughts on climbing up here.

It was actually kinda gnarly and a little bit scary

But you gotta go right for it

The Ukulele Academy | NC Weekend | UNC-TV - Duration: 4:47.

- When you imagine a long hot summer day,

don't you hear the soft sounds of a ukulele strumming

in the background?

And why not?

It's an easy instrument to learn, they're not too

expensive and the folks at the Ukulele Academy

in Wilmington will tell you they're a whole lot of fun.

- Unless you go to Hawaii, you don't usually see this

many ukuleles in one spot.

I've probably got close to 250 different ukuleles.

- [Narrator] Everything from beginners models on up

the scale, ukulele's of all shapes and styles.

- There's eight string ones, which are called a taropatch,

six string ones that are called a leelaaloo,

then there's even banjo ones that are literally played

just the same, but they have a drum instead of a

wooden sound box.

So there's a lot of different combinations,

different woods and just different styles.

- [Narrator] Basically there are four different sizes

of ukuleles.

- Most popular has always been the smallest one,

the little, which is the soprano.

In Hawaii they call it the standard.

- [Narrator] But how do you choose?

- When someone walks in I basically say there's four

different sizes, the first three are the most common.

Soprano, concert, tenor.

Soprano is the smallest, tenor is the biggest of the three.

All three of those are played and tuned exactly the same.

And then the biggest is the baritone.

The baritone was more popular in the 1950s,

it's actually tuned different, it's tuned like a four

string guitar, almost, almost like a four string

classical guitar.

When somebody's picking one out I'll usually just say,

"Hold 'em," I'll show them how to hold it with their

arm tucked in and then basically just,

whichever one feels the most comfortable.

A lot of times if they go with what size feels the

most comfortable and then from there it's just what

you like the sound of.

What kind of wood, what do you like the look of and

the sound of?

And a lot of times it's just personal preference,

it's what you like the feel of.

I said, "Pull them off the wall and give them a strum.

"Just feel free to have fun with it."

Once you hold it in your hand and really compare and

listen to it it's a whole different experience.

It's almost like picking your favorite color,

it just depends on what sound you like and what

really fits you just right.

- [Narrator] And for Kent Knorr, the ukulele is the

right fit.

- Most people think ukulele is just--

[plays tune] Just strumming along.

Which I teach, but you could also--

[plays tune]

You could be classical.

[plays classical tune]

So you could do that, you could play blues.

[plays blues tune]

So there's a lot of different things you could do with

it besides just strumming.

Where there's nothing wrong with just strumming and

singing, too, which is a great way to start out.

- [Narrator] For those just starting out,

or for the more seasoned strummers, the North Caroline

Ukulele Academy offers a variety of

classes and workshops.

You could even schedule some private tutoring as part

of your next Wilmington vacation.

- My approach to teaching is just having fun with it,

but also with respecting the Hawaiian tradition of it.

So one of the aspects that I work into the class is

the concept of aloha and how that works with music

and what it means to the Hawaiian people, as well.

Most people know it as hello and goodbye,

but it also can mean love, it can be a way of sharing

feelings towards others.

So in my class every week I give another aloha word

to help explain the deeper meaning of it and to kind of

bring it all together.

Really, I think, for all ages it's a very encouraging

instrument.

It's not something that seems intimidating and just

with the size and the sound it's a

very approachable instrument.

♪ No I won't--

- [Narrator] Concerts throughout the year bring in

ukulele artist from around the country.

- And we're kind of on the circuit where they'll come

by and they'll perform a concert, but they'll also

give a workshop where they play their actual style of

music and it's just a good way to meet other ukulele

players and ones who travel and play.

- [Narrator] Another way ukulele players get together

is through monthly jam sessions.

- I get folks from all over the state that will come up

just for our monthly jam.

It's usually the last Saturday of the month.

- It's free, everybody comes in, people from six to

I'd say 60, but even older folks like me.

And you play and play all the different songs and

it's really fun and you can play ukulele without smiling.

- This is Derek Long for North Carolina Weekend.

- [Deborah] The Ukulele Academy is at 203 Racine Drive

in Wilmington and they're open every day at 11 AM,

except Wednesday and Sunday.

For more information give them a call at 910-538-3419

or you can find them on Facebook.

Should Cultural Appropriation be Illegal? | We the Internet TV - Duration: 3:24.

[KEVIN] The debate over "cultural appropriation" has made it all the way to the United Nations,

where activists are calling on the UN's World Intellectual Property Organization to

ban the appropriation of Indigenous cultures.

Here to talk about the proposed ban are social justice advocate Lilith Shinn and Spencer

Ricard, a senior fellow at the Identity Matters Institute.

So, Lilith, as I understand it, cultural appropriation means one culture adopts or uses elements

of another culture.

It sounds a lot like sharing.

[LILITH] No, Kevin, it's not "sharing" when the dominant culture takes without asking permission.

[SPENCER] That is what dominant cultures do after all - they dominate.

[KEVIN] Activists are calling for the UN to create "criminal and civil enforcement procedures"

to stop non- Indigenous people from using Indigenous designs, dances - even words.

Isn't that a little over-the- top?

[LILITH] Maybe for you, Kevin, since you have always BEEN ON TOP.

When white people profit off what they take from other cultures, it's theft.

And theft IS punishable by law.

[KEVIN] But the United States is a melting pot.

Isn't it the mixture of cultures that makes us who we are?

Spencer, what do you think about Lilith's claim?

[SPENCER] Oh, I think Lilith is right on the money.

White people should never embrace any culture other than their own.

[KEVIN] I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time believing what I'm hearing.

[LILITH] Then let me spell it out for you, Kevin:

Just because you're white doesn't mean you have the right to wear a headdress, or

cornrows, or Navajo panties, or hoop earrings - or hang a dreamcatcher above your bed!

[KEVIN] But how else am I supposed to catch my dreams?

[SPENCER] You don't need a dreamcatcher if you're white - you're already living

the dream, bro.

You are the dreamcatcher.

[LILITH] Exactly.

[KEVIN] Wait a second, Spencer, the Identity Matters Institute, is that a-

[SPENCER] A white identity group?

Oh yeah.

[KEVIN] Not again.

[SPENCER] And we at I.M.I. are all for this law.

In fact, we would like to see the law expanded, so white people would be totally forbidden

from engaging with any and all non-white cultures.

[LILITH] Me too. I agree.

[KEVIN] How can you both agree on this?

[LILITH] Just take the case of Kooks Burritos in my hometown of Portland.

Two white women invaded Mexico and Columbussed recipes from local Mexican tortilla ladies.

Disgusting.

[KEVIN] "Invaded" and "Columbussed"?

C'mon, we're talking about burritos here!

[LILITH] Well, one of the conquistadoras said she "picked the brains of every tortilla

lady there."

Literally picked their brains.

[KEVIN] No chance that was literal.

[LILITH] There is blood in those burritos, Kevin!

[KEVIN] The Kooks Burrito cart eventually closed down.

[SPENCER] Good.

[KEVIN] Why is that good?

[SPENCER] Because of the Tortilla Test.

[KEVIN] What the hell is the Tortilla Test?

[SPENCER] If your skin is lighter than a tortilla you should never make Mexican food,

eat Mexican food, and definitely never ever date a Mexican.

Or any brown person.

[LILITH] I totally agree, Spencer!

[KEVIN] How?

That's like the definition of racism!

[LILITH] No, it's not.

Because so many women of color are tired of seeing brown men "winning" white women.

[SPENCER] And because when white men and brown women have kids, they dilute the purity of the race.

[LILITH] La raza!

[SPENCER] Right!

[KEVIN] You know, even though you're an extreme progressive and you're obviously

a white supremacist, you two would make a perfect couple!

[SPENCER] Nah, it would never work out between us.

[KEVIN] Oh my God...

[LILITH] That swastika was appropriated from ancient Hindu and Buddhist cultures!

It would definitely never work out between us!

[KEVIN] That's what upsets you?

HOLY

[KEVIN] So what do you think about cultural appropriation?

Should the authorities step in to put a stop to it?

The blues could also be a key player short come this fixture as Diego Costa is heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea : Chelsea fail to do the double as Arsenal win the FA Cup at Wembley.   Arsenal star man Alexis Sanchez celebrates FA Cup win in the dressing.

Mama Dip's Kitchen | NC Weekend | UNC-TV - Duration: 4:45.

- Over 40 years ago Mildred Council, better known as

Mama Dip, opened a small restaurant in Chapel Hill.

Legend has it she started with $64, $40 for food

and $24 to make change.

The money that she made at lunch bought the food

she needed to make dinner, and from those humble

beginnings, Mama Dip's has become a southern institutions.

Let's meet Mama Dip to learn more about her

fascinating story.

[upbeat music]

- Today we're gonna make fried apple pie.

I learned when I was 10 years old.

We would get the apples off the tree and peel them

and then we'd put them in the sun.

My name is Mildred Council, but known at Mama Dip.

My profession is cooking, uh-huh, yeah.

My home is Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

[upbeat music]

- Why did you always like to cook?

Why did you love to cook?

- When I was in the country it was a must, uh-huh.

Grew up in Chatham County on a farm.

I learned to cook corn when the corn came in,

There's nothing like a slice of chicken

'cause we just had a chicken house.

That's right, fried chicken the form of love.

You know what, we need to get this thing and

make a business.

Opened my restaurant in 1976.

Started out with $64.

People started coming.

It was joy.

You could feel it.

Number one, I was an Afro-American, or a black woman,

and then I got this thing going and then I got all

these white people coming in here sitting down to eat.

And they said, "This is good food."

- Try it with me?

- Yeah, but I said I know that was gonna happen.

You gave me the biggest piece.

[laughter]

[upbeat music]

- So we are gonna go travel to go see Mama Dip's

childhood areas, where her farm was.

Does it look the same as you remember?

- There wasn't no road.

It was a dirt road.

- Mama Dip, this area over here, was this near where

you guys would do the molasses?

- Yes, ma'am.

This is Ellen, me and her are the only ones living.

I made some fried apple pies yesterday.

You want to take them up and put them in the oven?

And that didn't last 10 minute.

[laughter]

The corn shuckin' --

we cut the corn and we put the corn up and

have it in a row this long, way up there.

[upbeat music]

I got my name, Dip, by going to the spring by going

to the spring and dipping up water.

I had eight children and every one of the worked in

the restaurant.

[upbeat music]

Went to the White House and I think I won something

in North Carolina, the cooking contest.

We got to the dinner table and I looked at the great

long table, look at all that silver and I said,

"What in the world is going on here?"

With a knife, I just put a fork on the table.

It's hard to find a cook, you know?

Find somebody that knows what to do at Mama Dip's.

It's old fashioned, it's still old fashioned.

Sometimes now I think the children are cooking something

a little different, but everything is just what I

come up with.

[upbeat music]

The food has a history on it's own.
