Underworld is close, but we still have ground to cover.
Before we learn how to use Sacred Arts and face Integrity Knights riding Dragons, we
have one more world to discover...
In the previous videos, we went through the entirety of the World of Swords, Aincrad as
well as the World of Fairies, ALfheim Online.
Now, it's time to dive into the third one, the World of Guns, Gun Gale Online!
Road to Alicization continues and this is the Journey So Far featuring Phantom Bullet!
As usual, like the previous 2 videos, I'll be covering the events of Phantom Bullet in
a fast and concise manner and explain things where anime failed to showcase the events
properly to clear up any confusions that you may have.
Without further ado; A year after the Aincrad incident had concluded,
in a completely different game, Gun Gale Online, people were watching a live interview in a
cafe with the winner and the runner up of the previous Bullet of Bullets tournament,
XeXeeD and Yamikaze, the former being the winner and someone who had spread misinformation
about a meta shift in GGO, claiming it was the age of Agility based players, which many
people had followed and disappointed with the results.
A player in a ragged cloak, gave a speech about judgement and shot towards XeXeeD's
face on the Cafe TV.
Everyone else mocked the player, but then the revelation hit them.
XeXeeD, on the screen, suddenly had an expression of pain, clutched his chest and promptly disappeared,
leaving a disconnection error on screen.
The player in the ragged cloak claimed the name Death Gun.
Kirigaya Kazuto arrived at a classy restaurant to have a meeting with Kikuoka Seijirou from
the Virtual Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the government division that was
handling issues in VR Worlds after the SAO Incident began.
The duo already had met before multiple times to debrief Kirito based on his experiences
as the person who cleared Aincrad, as well as his involvement in stopping the experiments
conducted by Sugou Nobuyuki.
In fact, Kikuoka Seijirou was the first person that greeted Kazuto, when he woke up in the
hospital.
As Kikuoka told him that a player had died while using an AmuSphere, the secure, next
gen version of a NerveGear, after the player was shot in game by a lunatic.
Kirito dismissed the case as coincidence, Kikuoka informed him that a second death with
the same circumstances had already happened, involvement of one Death Gun, a judgement
speech, a famous player and heart failure causing a disconnect in the game, death in
real life and thus it wasn't a coincidence.
After hearing about the details, Kirito accepted the investigation job.
Meanwhile, a girl with a rare sniper, Hecate II, that she found by sheer luck 3 months
ago, found herself in an unfavourable situation in a PvP Squad fight in the world of Gun Gale
Online, after their planned ambush went wrong.
Despite how hopeless things looked, Sinon did not back down, stood strong and convinced
her squad, led by another player, Dyne, and eventually managed to come out on top.
In another world, Kirito told Asuna that he would be leaving ALO for a while and convert
over to GGO, without going into too much detail.
2 days later, Asada Shino was getting bullied in a small street by her classmates, who were
triggering her panic attack by imitating guns.
Shino was saved by her friend, Shinkawa Kyouji, who shouted from away, imitating the sound
of a police officer, to scare the girls off.
Settling at a cafe, they talked about the upcoming Bullet of Bullets tournament.
Once back home, Shino tried holding the model gun that was awarded to some participants
of the second BoB, which again, triggered her panic attack, as she recalled a series
of events from her childhood.
The time when her mother was at a post office and a deranged person rushed in the door,
threatening everyone with a Type 54 Black Star pistol and asking for money.
One of those behind the counter hit the panic button to call the cops and the robber shot
him in place.
She threatened to kill Shino's mother, if more people tried going against his will.
Hearing this, Shino lunged forward and bit the robbers arm, causing him to drop his weapon
and she grabbed it.
As the robber tried jumping on her to get the gun back, Shino panicked and shot the
robber.
After the third shot landed on his forehead, the robber dropped down and little Shino realized
what just happened.
Kirito walked into the hospital room arranged by Kikuoka Seijirou to monitor and ensure
his safety during his investigation, as well as watching his vitals in the case he gets
shot by Death Gun.
Nurse Aki greeted him, as the person in charge of the controlled environment.
Kirito began his dive.
Meanwhile, Death Gun, was listening to players' reactions towards him, not taking him seriously.
2 of his previous targets showed up on his screen, along with Sinon next to them.
Kirito opened his eyes in the main Hub of Gun Gale Online, a crashed spaceship turned
into a safe city, SBC Glocken.
He was surprised how feminine his Avatar looked, as another player offered to purchase this,
apparently very rare, skin from him, who would later show up to LLENN and Fukaziroh in the
future in the spin-off series, Alternative Gun Gale Online.
Kirito replied that it was a converted account from another game, thus he wouldn't sell it,
conversion being a feature of Seed based games that Kirito got from Kayaba Akihiko and published
a free version for VR Games to be developed.
Confused as to where to go in Glocken, Kirito asked a person for directions.
That person was Sinon and was surprised to find another "female" player around, so she
decided to help.
Kirito decided to play along to get more information.
She showed him around and after Kirito told him that his main stat was Strength, followed
by Agility, Sinon recommended having either a heavy assault rifle or a machine gun, which
just confused Kirito further.
To gain some money, they headed towards the casino, where Kirito beat the game Untouchable
with ease, leaving everyone stunned at the newbie clearing the nigh impossible to clear
minigame, getting all the money that was saved up until now.
He explained that at a short distance, even with Bullet Lines, there just wasn't enough
time to react, hence why he followed his gun manually and reacted to that, instead of the
lines that show up on his visuals.
Back at the shop, he ignored every bit of advice Sinon gave him and bought Kagemitsu
G4 instead, a Photon Sword, due to his familiarity with the weapon, despite almost everyone claiming
that they were useless in a world of guns.
Kirito refused Sinon's words and claimed it had to be good for something if it was in
the game.
He found it to be quite light and attempted to sheathe the sword on his back out of habit,
much to Sinon's surprise.
Realizing his mistake, for the second time, he proceeded to attach it to his belt and
also bought a Five-Seven pistol, bullets and armor, per Sİnon's advice.
Spending too much time, they were almost late for the Bullet of Bullets registrations, so
Sinon rented a buggy and the duo headed straight to the Governors Lobby.
On the registration form, Kirito saw he could enter address information to send rewards
to, should he get a top ranking reward and although tempted, he left it all blank.
After registrations were done, both were relieved to see they were in the same block, but on
opposite sides, so even if they were to fight in the final preliminary round, they both
would reach the main tournament, no matter who won.
As they started their preparations, Sinon took Kirito to the changing rooms with her
and as she started changing, Kirito revealed that he was, in fact, a male player with a
feminine looking avatar.
Sinon was pretty angry but eventually gave in to the fact that Kirito was just outright
clueless about GGO and decided to explain the basics.
As their conversation was over, Spiegel, Shinkawa Kyouji's GGO Avatar came in and talked with
Sinon.
After revealing to Spiegel that Kirito was a male, Sinon told Kirito to be at the final
round so that she could kill him, but Kirito replied with a cheerful manner, pointing out
that her statement sounded like a date.
This annoyed Spiegel deeply.
The first round started and Kirito was thrown onto a foreign field in a foreign VR World.
Being clueless, his opponent got the uppor hand with ease, getting multiple shots at
Kirito early on.
He rushed towards his unsuspecting opponent in plain sight, shocking him at the sheer
ridiculousness of the approach in a gun based game.
His opponent emptied an entire magazine on him, but Kirito had other plans.
With the recoil and Bullet Circle in place, he knew he didn't need to dodge all the bullets
coming at him.
Only a portion of the bullets would hit him in vital places from that distance.
With the Bullet Lines appearing in his vision, he focused and traced the lines, not just
where they were landing, but also in which order they were coming up.
He ignored the ones passing by.
He ignored the ones that were just grazing him.
He locked onto the ones that were going to be direct hits.
And he blocked them one by one with his Photon Sword.
Closing the distance was much more easier, when his opponent now had to reload, but letting
him reload and unloading another magazine on him from such a short distance, he knew
he wouldn't survive, so he shot at him with his Pistol to buy himself time to close the
gap.
Once close enough, he imitated the movements of Vorpal Strike Sword Skill, a type of Skill
that didn't exist in GGO, hence why he could only imitate the movement, without the system
assist, and eliminated his opponent.
Keep in mind that the flashy colors like the anime portrays for when Kirito imitates these
skills, do not exist in GGO and was just an artistic decision on the GGO production staff.
As mentioned, Kirito only imitates the movements based on muscle memory in these instances.
Since Sword Skills don't exist in GGO, it's essentially Kirito doing all the work.
The system does not make him lunge forward, the system does not lock onto the enemy, it's
all manual work here, hence why they are not as effective as other games and hence why
how the anime showcases these moments, is outright ridiculous.
Once he was back in the lobby, he was confronted by a man in ragged cloak and a mask with red
eyes, startling Kirito in the process, asking if "he was the real thing".
The player pointed out to his name, Kirito, and the movements he imitated in his fight,
Vorpal Strike.
Kirito realized this person was an SAO Survivor, only to realize the tattoo on his wrist.
The tattoo of the most notorious Player Killing Guild in Aincrad, Laughing Coffin.
He suddenly recalled the events of their raid in Sword Art Online to stop Laughing Coffin
for good.
During the raid, 21 Laughing Coffin members were killed in Aincrad, 2 were by Kirito's
sword.
Kirito realized the voice of the person matched the sound recordings of Death Gun.
Complete shocked, he was suddenly brought back to GGO by Sinon tapping on his shoulders,
mocking how bad he looked, thinking it was because of the fight he just went through,
but Kirito clutched at her hands in desperation.
Sinon recognized the look, the fear in his eyes.
She asked what was wrong, but Kirito got teleported to his next qualifier round before he could
answer.
Spiegel was watching this interaction from the side.
With an entire clip grazing him from a far, Kirito spurred back to life with his full
might.
Progressing through the preliminaries with his reckless Sword Gun combo, only blocking
the bullets headed for his vitals while letting everything else hit him.
Both Sinon and Kirito make it to the final qualification round.
Having already guaranteed a spot in the finals, Kirito had no intention to fight.
He simply walked up to Sinon, which only angered her further.
Bullet Circle, being affected by emotional status, thus heart rate, grew wilder for Sinon,
causing her to miss a clear shot.
Can't get a clean head, she missed and missed and missed, until she had a single bullet
left.
Sinon confronted him, lashing out, making him remember his promise.
That he would fight her if they were to cross paths.
Disappointed in himself, he offered a duel.
10 meters apart, he told Sinon to shoot at him, where he promised to fight at his best.
Realizing Kirito had a plan, she decided to surprise him by aiming at his leg, instead
of a vital place on his body, where he would likely be protecting.
But she had forgotten one small detail.
Especially from such a small distance, it was very easy to see where she was looking
at with her eyes, where she was aiming with her gun.
Expecting the shot, Kirito blocked the one bullet and rushed towards her, grabbing her
as she was stumbling out of shock.
Based on his words, Sinon realized maybe he too, had a similar past to hers.
Telling that he was no longer able to kill, even if that means saving others he cared
for.
How he tried to forget his past where he did exactly that.
Claiming he had won the duel, Kirito refused to deal the final blow and told Sinon to resign.
Promising she wouldn't lose next time, she angrily resigned as she told him to survive
in the finals until he found her.
Now, looking back at how Kirito deflected the bullet, naturally, he didn't swing the
sword as he heard the bang.
I can't even believe that I need to explain this bit, but looking at the reactions, it
was needed.
If you start swinging the moment you heard the bang, even if you have perfect reflexes,
the sword won't make it from your right side to where the bullet is hitting in time.
What he does in this instance is that he guages Sinon.
Looking at her face, her trigger finger, her breathing pace, it is possible to assume when
she is going to start pulling the trigger and in an instantenous action, like pulling
a trigger, there is no going back.
Guaging the time correctly, he was able to swing the sword late enough that she wouldn't
be able to change her target, as well as early enough that he was able to swing before the
bullet was fired.
And sure, you can cite Mythbusters that it is impossible either way, but then again,
Mythbusters is testing based on real life physics, while GGO is a post-apocalyptic phantasy
shooter environment and while your reflexes are bound by yourself, your action, the speed
you can swing the sword at, is tied to your stats.
As mentioned above, starting the movement early and late enough at said moment with
the correct timing, Kirito had more than enough time to reach the bullet, even at that distance,
because that is how fantasy games work.
After watching everything, Kyouji decided to talk to Shino in real life and eventually
confessed his love.
Shino did not respond with the same sentiment and asked him to wait until the end of the
tournament.
Disappointed, Kyouji still agreed.
Having been significantly troubled by the events of the previous day, Kirito was counselled
by Nurse Aki before he started his dive session.
Trying to comfort him, Aki told him that she wouldn't be able to help him carry the burden,
but also reminded him that the fact that he was so troubled, that he still remembered
what happened so clearly, was the proof that he had not forgotten the memories of the ones
he had killed, it was the proof that he was different than those PKers were.
Calming down and thanking Aki, Kirito wen't back to GGO, as Asuna and the others decided
to watch the livestream of the tournament in ALO.
With the third BoB starting, Kirito realized that Death Gun was not appearing as a name
in the participant list, so with the help of Sinon, they went through the names of the
players who were not present in the previous tournament.
Pale Rider, Musketeer X and Sterben.
Worried by his actions from yesterday and today, Sinon asked him to explain himself.
Kirito, glossing over the details, told her that one of the players was one of his old
enemies in a previous game he played.
Sinon asked if he was an SAO Survivor, but regretted asking it and changed the topic
before he could answer.
Right before they teleported, she reminded Kirito of his promise.
He was not to die before they found each other.
A little while after the tournament started, Sinon saw Dyne, followed by a player named
Pale Rider from her position.
She was about to start shooting when Kirito suddenly appeared and stopped her, demanded
that she would not take action until the battle resolved.
A cloaked man appeared on the side of the bridge, getting ready to shoot Pale Rider.
Kirito suddenly yelled at Sinon to shoot.
The guy in a cloak managed to dodge the bullet, indicating that he was aware that they were
up there, observing.
Death Gun shot Pale Rider with his pistol after his theatrics, decreasing his HP slightly.
Pale Rider recovered from his stun, jumped up with his shotgun, but suddenly collapsed
and disconnected.
The man in the cloak used the livestream to his advantage, declaring he was Death Gun
and finishing his speech with the phrase "It's showtime".
Back in ALO, Klein dropped his glass in shock after hearing the words.
He had recognized the catchphrase of PoH, the leader of the PK Guild, Laughing Coffin.
Klein explained the situation and what happened back in SAO to Leafa and she finally understood
why Kirito had been acting so out of ordinary last night when he came back from the hospital.
With realizing why Kirito had been appointed by Kikuoka Seijirou, Asuna logged off to talk
to him.
Death Gun disappeared into the shadows and Kirito proceeded to explain the reality of
the situation to Sinon.
They waited for the scan and saw both Sterben and Musketeer X in the city area.
They decided to follow after X, because her name in Japanese sounded like Death Gun.
As Kirito headed towards the stadium where X was, Sinon got shot by a stun bullet.
Death Gun, who had the account name Sterben, appeared in front of her, decloaking from
his invisibility cloak and took out his pistol, turning it towards Sinon.
She dropped her sidearm from her hand in shock, realizing it was a Type 54 Black Star, the
same gun that caused her trauma.
Just as when Death Gun was about to end her game, Kirito shot towards him from the stadium,
using Muskateer X's sniper, forcing Death Gun to retreat.
They got onto a buggy and started to escape, knowing Death Gun would follow and he did.
With Death Gun closing in, Kirito told Sinon to shoot at him, but she was in shock.
She was unable to pull the trigger.
Kirito turned around to assist her.
She claimed it was too unsteady to pull an accurate shot but Kirito promised that it
would be okay in a second.
Jumping up a ramp and floating steadily in air, Sinon shot, but missed nevertheless.
Her bullet hit a truck though, causing its tank to explode and forcing Death Gun to stop
pursuing.
They took shelter in a cave and Kirito decided to be honest with her, explaining that the
person he was before, would not be afraid of Death Gun, would not be afraid of dying.
But the person he is now, had a reason to live and that he was afraid of Death Gun.
Sinon suggested to just let Death Gun win the tournament, but Kirito refused, saying
he wouldn't be willing to let others die as he did nothing.
Sinon said she would rather die than live in fear and tried to leave the cave, but was
stopped by Kirito.
He claimed that it would not be worth it if she died alone, but she refused the notion,
claiming people already saw her as a murderer as she broke down.
Calming down, she revealed her past to Kirito, the post office, the robber, the gun.
The same gun that Death Gun was using, hence why she froze.
In GGO, she was always confident, but being in that moment, in front of that gun, had
replaced Sinon with Asada Shino.
Kirito replied with his story, Aincrad, Laughing Coffin raid, the people he killed in Aincrad.
He also added that this was the reason why he had to bring down Death Gun.
Sinon asked how he was able to overcome those memories and Kirito said he hadn't.
He mentioned that those memories, were not to be overcome, they were to be accepted.
Going through the actions of Death Gun, they deduced that he had an accomplice in real
life doing something to the bodies of the victims that required preparation, since he
shot towards them with his sniper, rather than his Death Gun.
Realizing the address form in the registration process and that he had an invisibility cloak,
they solved the mystery.
Sinon had also entered her address and started to agitate in the game, since the real life
Death Gun could have been in her home the very moment, which would forcefully log her
out due to AmuSphere's safety functions, but Kirito calmed her down, repeating that Death
Gun's partner would not be able to do a thing, unless she was shot by the pistol.
Kirito decided to be a decoy, considering he was safe in the hospital and told Sinon
to assist him from afar.
Meanwhile in ALO, after talking with Kikuoka Seijirou, Asuna demanded the whereabouts of
Kazuto, considering the situation and headed towards the hospital.
Yamikaze and Sterben were closing in on Kirito's location, leaving him in crossfire.
Sterben shot at Kirito with his sniper, but Kirito dodged and the bullet caused a tower
to collapse, close to where Yamikaze was hiding, that gave away his location and got him shot
by Sinon.
Giving away her location by using the first sniper shot that caused no bullet lines, she
immediately turned to Death Gun but he was already ready.
Both fired at the same time, with their bullets grazing each other on their way, Sterben's
sniper was destroyed, while Sinon's Hecate lost its scope, rendering it almost useless
in every aspect.
Having lost his sniper and not being able to shoot at Kirito with his pistol, Death
Gun drew out his estoc and countered Kirito.
At the hospital, Asuna rushed in, only to see Kirito sweating with a high heart rate,
but Yui relaxed her by streaming the BoB on the monitor and told the reason was that he
was in the middle of a fight, rather than anything life threatening.
Asuna remembered a Laughing Coffin member who was an estoc user, but couldn't remember
the name, looking at "Sterben".
Nurse Aki explained that the German word meant "Death" in Japanese hospitals, whereas the
real meaning of the word is the verb "to die".
As Kirito and Death Gun were fighting, Kirito explained that he figured all the plan out.
However, Death Gun was unphased, replying to Kirito that his knowledge would not change
a thing, without the knowledge of his name.
Zaskar being an American company, the government would not be able to get his personal information
based on the name Sterben.
Kirito knew the person from Sword Art Online, with all personal logs available for the disposal
of the ministry, but Kirito could not remember his name.
And Death Gun knew this.
When he was captured by Kirito, he promised to kill him when he got out and wanted to
offer his name, but Kirito had refused.
He was never able to share his name with Kirito..
Kirito was getting overwhelmed by Sterben's rapid attacks, deflecting, he constantly kept
being pushed back but in an instant, where he came eye to eye with Death Gun, he remembered
that he had heard is name before.
A Laughing Coffin member, who was using an estoc...
The raid meeting before the assault back in SAO.
Kirito recalled the pictures.
PoH, the leader of Laughing Coffin.
A high ranking officer of the guild, known for his use of poison knives, Johnny Black.
And the third member, known by his Red Eyes...
Kirito whispered out, "Xaxa"...
Death Gun lost his composure and missed his thrust as Kirito shouted again, Red Eyed Xaxa!
Both came to a standstill, Death Gun realizing that at that point, he had already lost.
But suddenly, a Bullet Line appeared on him.
While snipers were useless without scopes, they were still able to generate Bullet Lines
as usual, and Sinon was waving her bullet line around randomly to distract Death Gun.
He stepped back trying to cloak again, but Kirito didn't let him, reached for his gun
and shot him, breaking his cloak and with a yellow glow in his eyes, he continued to
swing his Photon Sword at Death Gun, ending the game for him.
Kirito and Sinon grouped up in the middle of the desert area.
While Kirito was sure Death Gun's accomplice would have left the house by now, now that
Sterben was defeated, he still recommended she'd call the police, but unsure of what
to say to them, Asada Shino shared her name and address with Kirito, so he'd be able to
help with his government contact, once they were out.
Kirito replied with his own name in return.
Sinon pulled up a grenade, taking both of them out at the same time, crowning both of
them as winners.
Waking up at her apartment, Shinkawa Kyouji rung the doorbell to congratulate Shino.
But gradually going crazy, he attempted to inject Shino with a lethal dose of suc...
succin...
Ugh, this thing you can read on your screen, with this very special injection device.
Almost had accepted her fate, she remembered Kirito..
And her own avatar in GGO, Sinon...
She fought back, attempting to escape, but Kyouji pulled her back..
Suddenly, the door opened and Kazuto rushed in, plastering his knee all over Kyouji's
face, yelling at Sinon to run away.
From the looks and voice, Shino recognized Kirito.
With Kyouji overpowering Kirito, Shino couldn't get herself to run away.
Kyouji, managing to inject Kirito with the special injector, of boy that looks familiar
for some reason, started cherishing his victory, while Sinon grabbed her radio and smashed
it at his head, rendering him unconscious.
As she went towards Kazuto, she realized that the injection happened right where one of
the heart monitor electrodes still remained.
A couple of days later, Kirito greeted Shino outside of her school.
They first met with Kikuoka Seijirou, where he explained both Shinkawa Brothers behind
the Death Gun incident were arrested, but a third accomplice, Kanamoto Atsushi, also
known as the poison knife user of Laughing Coffin, Johnny Black, managed to escape.
Right before Kazuto took Shino to Dicey Cafe, Kikuoka shared a message from Xaxa to Kirito,
that this matter was not over...
And that Kirito would be powerless to stop it...
As we come to the end of Phantom Bullet, Kazuto took Shino to Greedy Merchant Agil's shop,
Dicey Cafe, to introduce her to the rest of the crew and to help her make peace with her
past, bringing the woman behind the cash register at the post office, with her little kid, to
let Shino see what she had accomplished by protecting others.
As the little girl thanked her and gave her a picture she drew, Shino, cried with a soft
smile on her face...
And that, brings us to the end of Phantom Bullet.
Next up is Calibur and Mothers Rosario.
