Hey guys and welcome to this week's edition of Charged-Up News.
Todays show will include the 2019 updates for Zero Motorcycles, a flying taxi trial for
Singapore, the opening of pre-orders for the Brooklyn based motorcycle startup
Tarform and results from the pre-season testing over the Formula E championship
But first up on the program, the Supervisory Board of Porsche has
given the go-ahead for series production of the Mission E Cross Turismo. Using the
same drivetrain as the upcoming Taycan the Cross Turismo is more of an everyday
car equally at home on snowy mountain passes and gravel roads as it will be in
the city as a commuter. Back in June, Porsche presented a road ready version
of the car to 20 media representatives around Malibu in California and they
obviously received very positive feedback as we now have this car to look
forward to as well as the Taycan. It's great to see Porsche pushing down this
track and this crossover vehicle really is in a category of its own being a
sports car combined with the practical capable designs of an off-roader.
Kia has released a new video highlighting the features of their upcoming release of
the Niro EV. The launch of the Hyundai Kona and the Kia Niro could mark the
start of the mass adoption of electric cars worldwide. The Niro will have a 200
horsepower motor, a respectable 0-100km time of 7.8 seconds as well as
a minimum real-world range of 385 kilometers using a 64 kwh
battery pack. They've already been shown to be capable of up to 500kms if
you're prepared to cruise at 90 km/h. Through the use of a 100 kilowatt
charger a quick charge will also be possible in less than one hour. The
demand for electric cars in this price range is obviously there if you look at
the pre-orders for the Model 3 but how far ahead will Tesla get before the
major manufacturers finally put all of their efforts into EV's. Coming out of
Brooklyn is news from the electric motorcycle start-up Tarform and the
announcement of pre-orders for their handcrafted bikes. One of my favourite
films from the late 90s was the futuristic sci-fi flick Gattaca. The film
was full of classic but electric cars and these bikes would have fitted right
in with their vintage looks and modern power
trains. Their first two models launched are a flat bar scrambler and a cafe
racer with a starting price of US$18,000.
Specifications and features are fairly vague at this point but they do have some interesting radar
based safety displays and they do look very very cool.
From the major manufacturers this week, Volkswagen has started construction on its first
factory specifically designed for its new MEB platform for electric vehicles.
Based in China, the new factory will have a capacity of 300 thousand cars per year
and the first vehicle to be produced will be an all-electric SUV in 2020.
The facility will also utilize 27 types of environmentally friendly technologies
with a special focus on water preservation energy saving and the
reduction of carbon dioxide.
Nissan has confirmed that deliveries of the new
generation Leaf will begin in Australia in mid 2019. It's great that we are
finally getting the new leaf but Nissan will probably have some serious
competition from the Kona and Niro EVs with their 64Kwh battery
packs and could find that selling the leaf with its 40Kwh pack
could be quite difficult.
And in the latest ad from Ford, could this be the
new Mustang ? The first EV I drove was a late 60's Mustang, hopefully they make
this one super quick with classic styling and slightly better safety
standards than the originals.
Volocopter, a German company developing
autonomous electrical vertical takeoff and landing multicopters, or eVTOL, have
announced that their next series of inner urban flight tests will take place
in Singapore in the second half of 2019. Based on drone technology the
Volocopters are specifically designed for stable flight around skyscrapers and the
sound, which I assumed would be a bit of an issue, is so quiet that at a flying
height of 100 meters it cannot be heard over the typical background noise of a city.
Designed to verify the aircraft's ability to operate in a modern city, the
tests will eventually culminate in public demo flights. They regularly
operate in Germany and have performed numerous public flight since 2016 but I
think I'd still be pretty apprehensive going on the first flight around Singapore!
Longer range, more power and fresh styling are the newest features for the
bikes from Zero motorcycles in their 13th year of production. Horsepower is up
by 35% and the long range street bike can now do one hundred and twelve miles
on the highway or up to two hundred and twenty three miles or three hundred and
fifty kilometers around the city. Showing loyalty to previous customers, Zero has
also launched a backwards compatible 6KW charger which will fit the
street and dual-sport models back to 2015.
Using recharge stations, the charge tank is six times faster than a standard wall
outlet and can add up to 85 miles of city range in one hour. Zero motorcycles
continues to be the leader in the electric motorbike segment, I just wish
they still sold them here in Australia.
Our last stories for the week come from
the pre-season Formula E testing in Valencia where BMW has finished the top
of the timesheets on all three days. BMW set significantly faster times than
some of the major competitors and over the course of the three-day test, their
two drivers clocked up 435 laps between them. A comparison for this season's cars
worth looking at is this video from Envision Virgin Racing.
The new cars are obviously in a different league to the original Formula E
models and as you can see from the footage the speed difference is just astounding.
What has also surprised me a lot from
the testing footage this year is the volume and variation of sounds coming
from the new cars
While they don't have the bone-rattling, eardrum smashing noise of the F1 cars,
they're certainly not silent!
So that's it for this week's show,
as always if you'd like to keep up to date with the latest EV news and you're
not subscribed to the channel already, then hit the red button below and tap
the Bell notification and I will see you on the next one

How To Buy A Used Car - Duration: 2:46.
- [Announcer] Buying a used car can be stressful
but follow these simple guidelines
and you'll avoid some common mistakes.
Budget for more than the price.
Used cars may have maintenance needs,
and little to no warranty left.
So make sure you cover maintenance costs.
The prepurchase inspection or PPI is important
and relatively inexpensive.
A trained mechanic can spot bad repairs or other problems
that weren't disclosed by the seller.
Some issues might be deal breakers or give you leverage
when you negotiate.
Consult auto blogs handy guide to find
a recommended mechanic.
Never negotiate blind.
If you stumble across a car you love on the lot.
Leave and go do some research.
Autoblog has some great tools and reviews
to help you evaluate any used car.
Be ready when you come to the table.
Get a sense of what the car is really worth.
Browse used car classifieds taking your location
into account and keeping in mind that advertised prices
can be optimistically high.
Remember what you want to pay.
Stick to your budget and never be afraid to walk away.
Where to look for your used car?
Most new used car dealers also sell newer used cars
though sometimes a certified used vehicle
could cost nearly as much as a new car.
For older cars, try the automotive classifieds
like Craigslist, Autotrader our own Autoblog.
Always check vehicle history reports like CARFAX
and the National Insurance Crime Bureau's VINCheck
to make sure it's not a stolen vehicle.
Also verify the title on the National Motor Vehicle
Title Information System.
If anything doesn't add up, just walk away.
Never buy a car sight-unseen.
There are just too many risks.
Leave these blind deals to professional car flippers
who can afford to take a bat on a bad deal once in a while.
Make sure you leave with the right paperwork.
Every state has different requirements,
so give your vehicle licensing office a call.
Buying a vehicle with a lien on it?
If the lender is a bank, go in with the seller
and pay them directly.
They'll remove the lien and give you the title,
otherwise have a reputable escrow company hold
your money until the loan is paid off.
Lastly, some cars might be really cheap
because they have a salvage or branded title
if they have been totaled and rebuilt in a shop.
The car might seem fine but who knows?
Best to walk away from any car with a salvage title,
save your self the worry.
Following this set of guidelines will help you
buy a great used car without all the worry.
Now get out there and give it a try.

Behind the Scenes at CTA: Rail Car Maintenance - Duration: 4:45.
At the CTA, safety and reliability are top priorities. In addition to periodic
inspections of maintenance work that is done to keep each train car in good
working shape, cars and their onboard systems are thoroughly checked for
function and passenger comfort before they go into service. In this
behind-the-scenes video, we'll explain the inspections, repairs, and troubleshooting
measures we take to keep you safe and our fleet rolling.
My name is Devenless Wilks. I'm a Rail Maintenance Manager 1, and what I do is annual inspections on
2600 cars.
My name is Arthur Scales, Senior. My title is RTO.
Before train operators leave the terminal, they perform a series of pre-checks on their
train before departing, including walking on the train to look for issues inside
or outside each car including any issues with signs, lights, doors, temperature,
cleanliness, or vandalism. If I'm a rail operator and I'm starting my shift
I will go to my head car and I will key up my railcar and look at -- what are my
safety things? I will check my windshield wipers, I would make certain that my
headlights are working, I would check my exterior lights along the side to make
something if they are illuminating and going out, I will cycle my doors from
this car to make something that they all the doors in the concerts are opening
and closing on both the cat's side the non cap side. Our fleet started in 1981
which make that car 37 years old today, and although we try to do a lot of
things to keep these trains running, to keep the doors operating properly,
imagine if you had a car that was 37 years old. On each car we have two PIUs
Passenger Intercom Units. If a rider gets on a hot car in the summertime or
cold car in the wintertime, all you have to do is go and punch that button and I
will take care of that problem. If I come back there and I can't get heat in that
car I'm gonna evacuate car so nobody will get on that car.
An operator will do as call in control and reporting this as a defect and at the
next opportunity to pull this car off the road that's what we're going to do, bring
it in the shop and inspect it and make it safe for our guests. In addition to the
things that we do when the cars come into the shop, rail engineering determine
what type of overhauls we need to do based on trends that we see, based on
wear and tear of the vehicles. For example we change out the wheel
assemblies probably every six months because the wheel constantly grind down
as they're riding on the running rail, and so wheel assemblies are changed
out. We look at the control groups and see that if the switches are
defective, at the wiring inside of the group are constantly burning and
decaying, we do an overhaul to maintain the safety and efficiency of these
fleets. What we do on these cars is what's called periodic inspections and
annual inspections. And an annual inspection is more of a surgical
procedure. We are dropping trucks, we are looking in between things that
you just can't see on a normal basis. We take eight hours to look at one car to
make certain that it is safe, it is replenish, and it can go out for
service. The number one thing that CTA tries to implement and instill in
everyone that works here is safety. We take safety to the highest level at CTA.
We will never ever release a car that we know that is unsafe for our customers.
Our trains travel about 230,000 miles, about seven
times the circumference of the earth at it's equator on a typical weekday
year-round, and the talented and well trained people in yards, shops, terminals,
and who operates service are why this is possible even with some of our cars
nearing 40 years of age. In addition to the continual work we do to prevent and
mitigate delays and innovate new strategies to keep our trains rolling
we're also making historic investments in the system including replacing old
rail cars with new ones. We've also added the recent 5000-series which replaced
nearly half our fleet, and a new 7000-series is expected to begin arriving in 2020.

What Makes the 2019 Honda Pilot a Good Family Car? | Edmunds - Duration: 12:40.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
ELANA SCHERR: Got a big family?
Not ready for the minivan life?
You're probably already looking at the 2019 Honda Pilot.
The Pilot is one of Edmunds' top-rated three row
midsize SUVs, and it's one of the most-searched vehicles
at edmunds.com.
Can a big family SUV be both useful and fun?
We aim to find out.
Ooh, but first, subscribe and visit Edmunds for all your SUV
shopping needs.
The Pilot is a nice looking machine.
It's not too blobby.
It's not too square.
There are a few updates for 2019,
primarily in the LED headlights, which look sleek,
and in the tail lights, which look oddly incomplete.
This is the top trim for the Pilot-- the nearly $50,000
Elite.
It's heavily loaded with options,
including 20-inch wheels.
Snazzy.
Just in case you're watching this Honda Pilot review
thinking, ooh it's a hot rod and I'm really
going to get some sporty action in this car--
it doesn't even do a burnout.
I'm floored right now.
It just cuts all the power.
[ENGINE REVVING]
So you should probably go watch the Porsche versus Corvette
review that Carlos and Alistair just did.
For the rest of you who actually want a family vehicle,
we've got you covered.
The Elite is the most expensive trim level
you can get in the Honda Pilot.
This one that we're driving, which is very heavily-optioned,
is $49,000.
But they start at $31,000, so the Honda Pilot's really
covering both ends of the segment.
And you can get almost all the good
stuff that the Elite has in the middle at the EX or the EXL
level.
The Pilot has a 3.5-liter V6 which is rated at 280
horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque.
It's plenty to move this car around,
although it isn't super quick.
The higher trim levels are backed
by the nine-speed transmission, and that transmission
was sort of a sticking point for Edmunds in the earlier years.
It really searched around a lot and nobody liked it.
Honda has done a great job of retuning that transmission.
And while I wouldn't call it sporty,
I barely even notice it's there, which is what
you want in a transmission.
And all of the Edmunds reviewers agreed with me
that it's way better.
The engine has plenty of power, even in its regular drive mode.
On a steep hill like the one we're on right now,
you might want to put it in the sport mode.
It gives you just a little bit more throttle response
so that you don't have to floor it to get moving.
Along with having a sport mode, there
are four different driving modes.
There is one for snow, one for mud, and one for sand.
What it does is it changes how the power goes
to the four different wheels for the all-wheel drive.
It also cuts stability control, so if you're in sand or mud
where you want the wheels to be able to spin,
it'll let you do that so that you don't get stuck.
It's really very smart.
If you aren't trying to hot rod in your Pilot,
fuel mileage is right in the middle of the segment.
It is not the best.
I think that might be the Mazda.
But it's also not the worst.
It gets 19 on the street, 26 on the highway, and 22 combined.
I've been kind of joking about the Honda being a hot rod
or not being a hot rod.
But again, you've got to think about why you want this car,
and who's going to be in it.
And if it's your kids, if it's a baby,
and they're sleeping in the back,
you don't want a jumpy throttle or aggressive steering ramp.
You want everything to be smooth and quiet so you don't wake up
whoever's sleeping in the back.
The ride quality in this is exactly what you want.
I mean, we're in a really rough road right now,
and the video guy's asleep back there.
I'm sure of it.
Honda, like many of the car manufacturers
now, is starting to include all its safety features
as standard, no matter what trim you get,
which I think is fantastic.
So you get a backup camera, you get blind spot warning,
you get emergency braking.
And it'll warn you if somebody's stopped in front of you
with a little flashing "brake, brake."
And at first, I was like, what's that going to do?
But last night, I was not really paying attention.
In fact, I was messing with this Eco button here on the dash,
and it did the little "brake, brake" at me.
And there was a car stopped in front of me unexpectedly.
So I guess the emergency braking system might have saved me
from crashing into that car, but we didn't have to test it,
thankfully.
In commercials for family vehicles,
you always see these calm, chic parents.
And they look beautiful and put-together,
and they've got these beautiful, put-together kids in the back
who are super well-behaved.
In reality, they ought to show somebody who woke up at 4:00
that morning because the dog barfed,
and they're trying to get the kids to school
and then get ready for work.
And there's yogurt spilled on the console and Cheerios flying
around in the back.
And I think the dog barfed back there again.
The Honda designers really thought
about how they could help people weather that storm.
So it's full of neat little tricks to help parents.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Something I really like about the Pilot is the visibility.
It's really easy to see out of, and I
can tell where all the edges of the car are.
And that makes it really simple to park.
Even though it's a really big car, it parks like a small one.
I did notice that while it has a backup camera,
it doesn't have a 360 camera.
It has a couple of different views,
including the "don't run over your kid's bike" view.
And it has a 360 overhead sensor,
but it doesn't actually have a 360 backup camera.
But because it's so easy to see out of, I don't even miss it.
As a parent/chauffeur, you are basically
going to be living in here.
Lucky for you, it's a pretty nice place.
The higher level Pilots have an eight-inch touchscreen
which I really like.
It looks nice.
It's got this frameless construction,
and it's also really easy to use.
It's not hard to figure out where you want to be on things.
While the screen looks very high tech,
I actually really appreciate that Honda put an actual volume
knob in.
It's so much easier than trying to hit a bunch of buttons--
even the buttons on the steering wheel.
Your high tech options like Apple CarPlay,
Android Auto, hotspots, are in the high tech screen.
And then more traditional stuff, like say, heating and cooling,
is a little bit lower down.
Also easy little switches--
individual, driver, and passenger.
Or you can sync them together.
And if you move further down, you've
got a Blu-ray player that goes to a screen
in the back for the kiddos, or your easily-bored adult
friends.
And heated or cooled seats for both driver and passenger.
Because these days none of us can get all the technology
that we need just from the car, there's
a lot of places to deal with your phone.
I really like the charging pad in the Pilot,
because sometimes these touch charging pads
are in either a difficult place to get to,
or they take up all of your space.
And you really don't want to put anything else on top of them,
because they get hot.
This one's easy to use.
It's non-slip, so the phone stays there.
And it doesn't really take up the rest of your storage.
There's plenty of space here.
You've got cup holders and then a big, huge console
here that you can keep all of your snacks in.
It really is a big console.
And it has a little sliding drawer here,
so if there's smaller stuff, you can put that here
and you don't have to go digging around in the back there.
Another thing I like about the console--
excellent bag storage.
It won't slide off in the back.
The digital dash is uncluttered and customizable,
so you can see exactly what it is that you
want to be focusing on.
The steering wheel is a little bit
different from a lot of the cars that I've
been driving recently.
Normally I find that the radio controls
tend to be on this side.
But on the Pilot, they're over here on the left.
And it's the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist
that's over here on the right.
The Pilot's available in five different trim levels.
And in the lower levels you get cloth seats,
and in the upper levels you get a leather, leatherette?
I think it's a leatherette.
Most of the materials are sort of leathery, rubbery, soft
plastic--
easy to clean.
Even the console cover, which looks like it has a texture,
is actually very smooth.
So you'd be able to wipe spilled yogurt off that very quickly.
The seats are very adjustable.
I had no problem getting into a driving position that fit me.
My husband had no problem getting into a driving
position that fit him.
They move all over the place.
There's also plenty of room between you and a passenger,
because if you have a big family,
you're going to need your space.
Everything about the Pilot is meant
to make it easier to communicate with your family in the back,
and to keep an eye on them.
For example, inside this little glasses case
is a wide angle mirror.
I can see you back there.
There's also CabinTalk, which will
go through the speakers or the headphones,
so your kids can't pretend that they didn't hear you.
What's the deal with shifters?
They're all different now.
Like, I had no problem with the traditional shifter.
For a push button shifter, it does have one benefit, which
is each button feels different.
And it has a different motion to activate
it, which means that you're not going
to accidentally go in reverse when you want to go into drive.
Plenty of room in the back of the Pilot, as you'd expect.
If you're an adult, totally comfortable.
Got cup holders.
You've got charging ports and USBs.
And you've got your own climate controls,
including heated seats.
But really, the backseat of a Pilot is meant for kids.
So you can easily fit two car seats here and have room
to move around them, which is a big deal.
And there's entertainment.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Hi.
The selling point for a three-row SUV
is obviously the third row.
So how is it back here?
It's actually pretty comfortable.
You've got nice, squishy seats.
Got big cup holders and a big armrest.
And you've got a window, so you don't
feel like you're in a dungeon.
You could take the whole Girl Scout troop out.
However, that little lass in the middle here--
she's not going to be very comfortable for long.
There's a big hump of plastic that
goes right in the middle of your lower back.
Ow.
Normally the cargo segment of a review is not very exciting.
It's basically, how much is there?
16.5 with the seats up.
83.9 with all of them down.
That's not the best in the segment,
and it's actually fairly small with the seats up.
But it's how they use that space that's really smart.
Watch.
Looks like a normal trunk, right?
Carpeted.
Things don't roll around.
Ooh, but look.
First of all, there's space underneath here.
But even smarter--
[TAPPING]
They knew that sometimes you're going to be doing things
where your gear gets dirty and you don't
want to put it on the carpet.
So they made this reversible.
Now it's easy-to-clean plastic.
[TAPPING]
Almost everything about the Honda Pilot
is perfectly designed for parents,
except for how you put the seats down.
If you came in here with a baby in one arm
and groceries in the other, you're
going to have to put something down.
A lot of the competitors have a button
on the side, which is great, because you can kind of hit it
with an elbow or just with a tap of the finger.
But this is a strap.
You have to kind of lean all the way over
so it doesn't thump down.
Even worse is bringing it back up.
And this is the Elite.
You would think it would have a button.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that the Honda
Pilot is a fun car to drive.
But you know what?
It's not meant for that.
It's meant to be a safe and reliable way to transport you
and your family to do the things that you love.
[CAR BEEPING]
It may not be a fun car to drive,
but it will take you to have fun.
It's a good thing you didn't bring a bigger plane.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
[PLANE ENGINE ROARING]
I'm ready.
Ooh, it's fast.
[LAUGHING]
Yippee!
Ooh.
JIM DESAUTELS: [LAUGHING]
ELANA SCHERR: It just spins.
Oh, my goodness.

g-whiz once best-selling electric car and
still the best-selling eternal virginity capsule the g-wiz came to fame through
top gear blowing one up once a week the g-wiz was classified as a heavy
quadricycle due to its small size so that I could skip every single crash
test for cars at 35 miles an hour a driver could face serious injuries or
death that's if the battery didn't die before you crashed in fact Jeremy
Clarkson proved that a table is faster and safer than a g-wiz Nissan 350z an
attractive fast sporty and deadly car the 350 said is more than meets the eye

smart fortwo was mercedes attempt at making a city car for normal people it
shared a lot of components with the Mercedes a-class a car that lacked
electronic stability control which was evident as while it was being tested by
a Swedish car magazine in the famous moose test the car nearly rolled over it
also had very skinny tires which meant that it understeered safely but the
worst part about the smart was its looks uh I mean its head-on collision safety
while being tested by the IIHS had collided with a c-class Mercedes where
flung into the air and rotated 450 degrees Testers said that there were very
little crumple zones so do the right thing and buy a normal car.
