This is Matt from Frictional Weekly.
If anyone listened through the whole podcast with me, Seth and Bizzeplayn, we talked about
how we honestly don't like horror films, or at least the majority of them, especially
the ones today.
So I thought today I would share the few horror movies I actually do favor thus far and as
of 2018.
Also, I know I've been inactive which is a sin to do around Halloween time on this
channel, but currently to pay bills, I have to work at a shitty warehouse job just to
scrape by, so I can only manage publish videos about once every two weeks.
It's depressing and it sucks but that's just how it is right now.
So I hope you can all understand why I can't just publish videos all week anymore.
With all that out of the way, here is my personal list of my favorite horror movies as of 2018.
#10: The Sixth Sense (1999) The Sixth Sense is a movie about a child psychologist
who is trying to help a child who thinks he sees dead people.
The psychologist himself is the only other person who can see these people who have long
passed away.
The plot twist is what makes this movie so memorable but I'll save that for you.

#09: Insidious (2010) The main reason I put this on the list is
my personal experience with what people call "out of body experiences" or "lucid
dreaming".
I'm the kind of person who has these experiences at least once every two months.
No, I'm not roaming around or outside my house in these dreams like in the movie, most
of the time I'm paralyzed but I can still look around my room (sleep paralysis), though
I prefer not to as I will hallucinate things that are usually the girl from The Ring, or
tall dark cloaked figures who loom over my bed.
Anyway, this movie brings lucid dreaming to the silver screen and very accurately represents
what we lucid dreamers experience, for some on a day-to-day basis, and that's why I
placed this film as number nine.

#08: Psycho (1960) Psycho is an Alfred Hitchcock movie that became
the catalyst for a new horror movie genre, slasher films.
Now I personally do not favor slasher films for their reliance on strictly gore and violence
to scare the audience, but this movie barely has that as (keep in mind) this was back in
1960, when gore was unheard of and still would be for over more than a decade later.
The movie is put on this list as it helped evolve horror into what it is today.
The movie personally doesn't frighten me either but I can appreciate its impact on
the horror genre.

#07: Alien (1979) Alien is one of those horror films that age
like wine.
It still holds up today as a genuinely creepy movie and the monster itself is an actual
suit designed by talented artist H.R. Giger that comes to life in this film, more so than
any rubbery-looking cgi mess we get today.
It slowly builds up tension to revealing the monster, but even when the monster is revealed
you only see small portions of its body, shrouded in darkness, making the thing all the more
sinister and terrifying.

#06: Cat People (1942) An oldie but goodie.
Cat People is a horror film about a woman fearing of turning into a cat if she gets
affectionate with her husband, an old fable from her homeland.
It's not the trope that makes me love this movie though, but the clever cinematography.
The camera angles, sound design and lighting is what puts this movie on this list.
The utilization of shadows especially in this movie are what give it a creepy, eerie, dream-like
feeling.
There is no gore or violence, I mean, we are talking about a movie made in 1942, nearly
20 years before Psycho, and that's why I like it.
It's creative and puts forth effort into creeping out the audience without eye-rolling-worthy
scenes of people being slaughtered.
Let this scene from the actual film do the talking.
(Show Stalking Scene) This stalking scene uses ominous street lamps
lit from above and the silence accompanied only by the footsteps of the protagonist and
her stalker behind to master the sinister creeping feeling they were going for, complete
with the Bus suddenly stopping by at the end, to give the audience a nice jolt.
#05: The Babadook (2014) The Babadook is about a widow who is afflicted
by the tragic death of her husband.
This tragedy leaves her feeling emotionally distressed and it builds up by her annoying
son who begins imagining this monster from a book she made the mistake of reading to
him one night.
As the movie goes on this seemingly evil spirit becomes a reality for the widow as it begins
to manifest itself all around her.
Personally I perceive this being as a physical representation of everything dark in life.
It only seems to manifest itself when something negative happens in the son's and mother's
life.

#04: The Shining (1980) The Shining is a movie-adaption of the novel
written by Stephen King.
It involves a writer by the name of Jack, who decides to take care of an empty Hotel
over winter, staying there with his wife Wendy and son Danny.
When a blizzard isolates them from leaving, Jack slowly turns mad as Danny begins having
visions of the Hotel's dark past.
I believe a psychological horror film like this can be interpreted in many different
ways, but in my eyes I like to see the theme being severe Cabin Fever, being isolated in
a huge creepy old hotel, driving the whole family insane.

#03: The Blair Witch Project (1999) The movie that popularized the found footage
cliche.
Probably the most hated on this list, but I had to put The Blair Witch Project as number
three because how successful it was at creeping me out specifically.
It doesn't show anything, it keeps building and building a tense foreboding feeling like
something is about to emerge from the dark forest and it carries this feeling on for
the entire movie without spoiling the monster's mystery.
The movie starts with low-budget documentary footage of local residents describing an urban
legend of a witch who lives in the forest.
You keep this witch in mind as the film goes on and your imagination runs wild on what
it looks like, how it moves and how it will eventually show itself, but it never does,
not on camera.
The low quality VHS camera footage you only view this movie from adds to the realism.
And fun fact, many who viewed this movie back in 1999 really believed it was real, not only
this, but allegedly the actors themselves were scared shitless for real throughout the
movie, especially towards the end.
And that iconic image of the girl crying, is apparently genuine terror.

Let me explain.
The rest of the crew would let the actors film with their cameras by themselves and
the crew would wake them up at night, making strange noises in the distance and slowly
terrorizing them.
The actors themselves weren't even completely sure that the noises were the crewmen, they
were nearly just as confused as the movie characters.
The slow subtle terrorizing made them more and more uneasy until the actors pretty much
became their roles.
This is why I love this movie so much, the acting seems for real and allegedly IT IS
genuine fear, and the mystery of the witch completes this movie, for me at least.

#02: It Follows (2015) I used to have reoccuring dreams of this gray
foggy humanoid figure that would relentlessly pursue me.
The way I knew he was close by is by a thumping sound in my ear that was most likely my eardrum.
The being would slowly follow me, I could run from it and retreat far away, but if I
remained still for too long it would eventually reach me.
It Follows does the same thing with it's monsters.
The beings slowly pursue their victims by walking, not sprinting, not jumping out at
the victims, just slowly walking with an emotionless blank look on their face.
Of course some will disagree that this way of executing a monster in horror films is
scary, that's a fair opinion, but for me it hits close to home with those dreams I
had, its a reason this movie is on number two.

#01: The Thing (1982) (Show scenes that remind you of Penumbra)
Wait what?
Were those scenes from a movie adaptation from Frictional Games' Penumbra?
Well of course not, The Thing was made back in 1983 while Penumbra was released in 2007.
I can't remember how exactly I found out about this movie at first I believe it was
from a Penumbra: Overture review video where the reviewer said it reminded them of this
movie.
I decided to give the movie a try since I'm a huge Penumbra freak, and I was instantly
a fan of the movie too.
The whole setting has that cold cabin fever isolated feeling like in Penumbra or like
I mentioned with The Shining.
It takes place in a research facility in uninhabited Antarctica, where a group of American scientists
begin getting tormented by an alien force that can take on the form of whatever it kills.
It feels like a combination between 1979's Alien and the snowy isolation from Penumbra.
Once again, this is a personal favorite list and I'm not displaying these movies as THE
BEST horror movies as of 2018, they are simply my current favorite horror films as of now,
so you should not take offense if a movie you hate is on this list, it's all about
opinion and taste.
