hey what's up in this video I'm going to show you how to create this countdown
timer effect in After Effects all right so here's my comp for the
countdown timer effect and I'm just going to play it back for you so you can
see what we've got here so it starts at 59 seconds and it's counting down and
eventually it'll reach 0 you can also do this the other way where it counts
upwards and it's kind of acts like a stopwatch but I'm just going to show you
how to do the countdown so the way to create this I'll just create a new comp
I like to use 60 frames per second because time is measured in 60 seconds
60 minutes it just makes it makes things a lot easier right I've got my duration
set to a minute ten this just gives me enough time to play around with and I'm
just going to name it countdown timer example exciting exciting name I'll just
throw that in comps alright quickly give it a background now I'm going to take
the text here and I'm just going to type out the the back of this timer
I shall quickly show you here in my original one I just have a kind of one
it's very faint it's almost like when the lights part lit up
it's that background hope you kind of get what I'm trying to say alright so
let's go back to that comp and I'm just going to type out zero zero colon zero
zero colon zero zero and I'm going to align it I'm just gonna change the
anchor point by hitting Y on the keyboard and I can slide it to the
middle there alright and I'm just gonna lower the opacity down I'll hit T on the
keyboard to bring up opacity and I'll bring it down to 25% alright so let's do
our first number and what you actually have to do is you're gonna keyframe and
animate each each one individually so seconds will be its own layer every 10
seconds will be its own layer minutes would be their own layer
ours would be their own there a tenth of second one hundredth of a second
hopefully get the idea but I'll show you what I'm talking about so I'll create a
new one here I'm just gonna type in zero whoops that's not zero that's a zero
I'm gonna get it too just gonna reposition that anchor point to the
middle I'm just gonna move it over to that second part the seconds area and
just align it to it there that looks good all right
so in order to animate this I need a slider control so if you order the
effects panel type in slider should pop up there you can just drag and drop it
on that layer now I'm gonna go into this layer and I'm gonna open up the effects
the text and the slider control and for the source text there's this little
swirly thing here called a pick whip and I'm gonna bring the pick wet and let go
over top of the slider so now if I change the values here you can see them
changing for me and I can animate those another thing to mention is make sure
the text is right aligned if it's centered the one goes to the middle
which won't work for this you can do that if you want but I'm going to show
you a different way so I got a brain so go right align make sure I should I'm
just gonna undo undo undo undo come on there we go
alright now let's animate this so this this one's gonna change every second and
I'm going to start from 9 seconds so I'm just going to zoom in here by hitting
Plus on the keyboard back up just a bit and the first one is gonna start at 9
and then I'm just going to jump forward every second sorry I have to set the
first keyframe so I'm gonna click on this little stopwatch guy here
jump forward to 1 seconds set another keyframe jump forward to 2 seconds set
another keyframe and actually I should be changing this these as I do it so
this one can be 8 this key frame can be 7 jump 4 to 3 this one can be 6 I'm just
gonna do this for the first 10 seconds
and zero and I'm actually going to make the last keyframe nine again now one
thing you're gonna notice is in between there's actually gonna be decimal places
the way to get rid of those is to highlight all of these key frames or
lasso around them right-click anywhere on one of them and click toggle hold
keyframe what this is gonna do is make that number stay so when I'm in between
nine and eight it's gonna stay at nine until it hits that next keyframe then
I'll switch over same thing from eight seven it won't change the seven until it
hits that keyframe all right now I want these numbers to keep going nine eight
seven six five four three two one zero nine eight seven
to save time rather than copying and pasting them all down the timeline what
I can do is add an expression to it this slider so I'm gonna hold down option on
my keyboard click on it now I can type in an expression I'm gonna use loop out
cycle and click away from it and now it will continue to change for me even
though there's no more keyframes passed that last one it knows to keep cycling
through so you can see the numbers will continue to update even further down the
timeline so now my seconds is working for me here
six five four three two one zero nine eight it's just gonna keep doing that so
now my second sassette so hopefully you're kind of starting to get an idea
of what's going on here I'm gonna apply this same method to the other ones but
you know say for every ten seconds rather than
number every second it's gonna change every ten seconds and it's not gonna
start at nine because measure time in 60 seconds 60 minutes so it's not going to
go above 60 so you're gonna count down from five four three two one
and actually I can show you that in my previous comp here so here's the ten
seconds and if I open it up for you slider control you can see every 10
seconds it changes so this first value is 5 it's the this number right here and
then it'll change to 4 right and they're all hold keyframes we got three two one
zero and then five again at the end there I've got the loop out cycle
applied but basically you're just applying this method to all the other
numbers so we have tenth of a second one hundredth of a second in there those are
changing even quicker actually I'll show you quickly here so if i zoom into 100
of second and tenth of a second you can see that the values are changing less
than a second they're just flipping by really quickly so this is my method of
creating a countdown timer or stopwatch timer thanks so much for watching
hopefully this video helps you out if you don't mind thumbs up would be nice
you
