What's up everybody this is Master Ian Gamer and just yesterday we were introduced to a
brand new Overwatch hero.
Nope, I'm not talking about Ashe, I already made videos on her.
In this video, I'm going to talk about Echo.
Despite her brief appearance in yesterday's animated short, there's actually quite a
bit to talk about regarding this strange new character.
Not only when it comes to her presence in the cinematic, but also based on some things
the developers themselves have said about the character and even some old concept art
which has suddenly become very relevant once again.
So without further ado, let's dive in and analyze what the deal is with Echo, the future
Overwatch hero.
Now the first thing you likely noticed when she appeared on screen was her striking similarity
to a certain Omnic we've seen in multiple images from the early days of Overwatch.
Previously this character was always associated with Athena, given that they featured the
her A logo on their head.
As many of you know, Athena is Winston's A.I. assistant on Watchpoint: Gibraltar as
well as in the dropship spawn rooms on Control Point maps.
People have long speculated the possibility of Athena one day becoming a playable hero,
mainly based on these early images, but there has always been one major condemning factor
preventing this, which is that she's the announcer in every match.
Being both the announcer and a playable hero is simply unintuitive game design, and therefore
could never happen in Overwatch.
However, it looks like Blizzard may have found a clever way around this obstacle, but before
I delve into that I want to go over everything we know so far regarding the character Echo.
So yesterday Jeff Kaplan himself all but confirmed that she will one day be a playable hero.
Let me just play a brief audio clip from Emongg's stream yesterday, and I think he'll speak
for himself.
Honestly, Jeff wasn't even trying to hide it.
He even asked Emongg's audience a little later on what class they wanted Echo to be,
Tank, Support, or Damage.
I'm sure this question was rhetorical and out of Jeff's own morbid curiosity, as at
the very least the devs must know what role she'll be already.
I mean, I already know what role she is, and I've only watched the same animated short
as the rest of you.
But, I'll get to that more in just a minute.
First, I want to acknowledge something else of interest which Jeff mentioned during this
stream.
He said that they currently have six heroes in development after Ashe.
He didn't specify how far along each hero was, only that there were six currently.
At least one of them seems to be very early in development, as two months ago at the Korean
Fan Festival, Scott Mercer stated that they only had four or five heroes in development.
Of these six though, I'm confident that we already know two of them.
The first of these is Echo, and the second is Junker Queen.
The reason I say Junker Queen and not Sanjay or someone else, is actually because of Jeff's
question regarding what class people wanted for Echo.
Geoff Goodman asked this exact same question regarding the Junker Queen back in at the
2018 San Diego Comic Con, which at this point makes me think the question could be some
kind of inside…
I don't want to say joke, but some kind of dev team thing that they likely all know.
Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into that, but it does seem rather odd that two different
developers asked the exact same question regarding characters who have so far each been heavily
teased as being possible upcoming heroes.
Anyways, focusing back on Echo herself, I've got a bit of a theory regarding her design
and its similarities to the old concept art.
Back in the day, long before Overwatch ever even was in Beta, Athena, or Iris as it seemed
she was called at the time, was a character design they came up with.
As the game continued development, they eventually decided to incorporate Athena as the announcer
and A.I. for Winston.
In doing so, they then eliminated the possibility of making her a playable hero, but they still
liked the character design enough, that they've decided to recycle it into a new character
named Echo.
Keep in mind, these old concepts almost certainly predate any of the established story we have
now, so there's no reason to suspect that the A logo is a canon part of this character
or that Athena has any kind of associated physical form.
Instead, I think Echo is likely a completely separate entity from Athena, although I could
easily see Blizzard writing some kind of story relation between the two, if not just as an
homage to what seems to have been the original character from back in the day, but also since
they both appear to have ties to Greek mythology.
I'm no Greek history expert, but given that Athena is a Greek goddess, I couldn't help
but wonder if Echo was, too.
As it turns out, she's something similar.
Let me just read this brief summary of the character as written in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
--- Echo, in Greek mythology, a mountain nymph,
or oread.
Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book III, relates that Echo offended the goddess Hera by keeping
her in conversation, thus preventing her from spying on one of Zeus' amours.
To punish Echo, Hera deprived her of speech, except for the ability to repeat the last
words of another.
Echo's hopeless love for Narcissus, who fell in love with his own image, made her
fade away until all that was left of her was her voice.
According to the Greek writer Longus, Echo rejected the advances of the god Pan; he thereupon
drove the shepherds mad, and they tore her to pieces.
Gaea (Earth) buried her limbs but allowed her to retain the power of song.
--- Now, certain elements from each of these two
descriptions seem to potentially play into the Overwatch character.
The idea of her fading away except for her voice could have something to do with the
small chip we see McCree place on her body.
Could that be a parallel to her voice being all that's left of her, at least until she's
reactivated?
Is the idea of her being punished for distracting Hera somehow going to tie into her story in
a way we have yet to see?
Also from the second part, the idea of Echo's limbs or body being buried could possibly
be a parallel to her physical form being locked away in the payload container?
Once again, I may be reading too much into things, but nonetheless I thought it was worth
mentioning.
Moving onto the even more speculative side of things, now let's talk a little bit about
her role in the Overwatch story.
Based off of how McCree says Overwatch needs her if it wants to pull off the recall, this
seems to indicate that she's actually quite crucial to the organization.
She may even transcend Athena in terms of importance, which raises some big questions
regarding what exactly she's capable of doing.
On top of that, why was she in the possession of the US military?
I imagine she was confiscated by the government after Overwatch got shut down, but that doesn't
explain why she was being handled by the military.
If anything, it likely lends towards the idea of her being dangerous to some extent.
Looking more closely at her actual design, one thing which immediately stood out to me
was the logo which has replaced the old Athena A. At first glance, it makes me think of a
plant.
I'm not sure how that would relate to an omnic like her, but honestly it's simple
enough that it could represent any number of things.
After doing a bit of digging, I noticed that it appears similar to the logo on the Garden
Oasis map.
This logo is undoubtedly representative of botany, but it's inconclusive whether or
not there's any connection to Echo.
Another logo which appears similar is the one used by the archeologists on Petra.
This icon, while not quite as discernable as the one on Oasis, seems to possibly be
either a torch or some kind of spear head.
Either way, it's definitely not the same as on Echo, but it puts forth some interesting
ideas, especially considering that this same organization is conducting excavations near
the Greek town of Ilios.
Coincidence?
Who knows.
But, perhaps the most intriguing comparison of all is the logo for Vishkar.
Like the other two, it's definitely not an exact match, but they do both have an overall
similar shape.
Additionally both also have a predominantly white color scheme with blue accents, so maybe
there is actually a connection here.
I'm not sure what exactly it would be, but again, it's definitely worth considering.
Since there's little more to examine regarding her story significance, now let's move on
to arguably her most important aspects, and that's in game abilities.
While I won't pretend that anything specific can be deduced at the moment, there are some
characteristics which seem very cleancut, the first being that she's undoubtedly a
Support hero.
I mean, just look at her.
Despite being made out of metal, she does a great job of conveying a very soft, comforting
presence.
She has a predominantly white color scheme with accents of blue and gold, all being very
symbolic of playing a supportive role.
Even the way she acts, especially when examining McCree's arm, is very kind and gentle.
Every single thing about this character screams Support hero.
And, since all Supports are now healers, that means she'll almost certainly be a healer,
too.
Additionally, given that she has wing like components on her back and levitates when
standing up, she may possess some ability to fly.
I'm a bit skeptical of this though, as she already boasts a tremendous similarity to
Mercy in color scheme and design, so sharing her flight abilities as well might be a bit
too much.
Considering the abilities of Iris from the early concept art, all of these abilities
are already possessed by another hero at this point, and going by the inconsistencies of
many other heroes in this image which are currently in game, I don't think we can
make any accurate deductions from this.
But, another aspect which may factor into her abilities is her name.
The word Echo could be tied to a number of different gameplay mechanics.
One that comes to mind would be some kind of duplication ability, possibly serving as
either a distraction for the enemy or to heal multiple teammates simultaneously.
Think of Ying from Paladins.
In fact, these two characters appear to have quite a bit in common when you think about
it.
Maybe there was a bit of idea sharing going on here?
Who knows.
Another Echo ability could be some kind of damage reflection.
This could work like a Genji deflect where the damage is sent back at the enemy, or given
that she's a Support, it more likely would be reflected as healing for your allies.
Aside from this, I could also see her utilizing shield health much like Symmetra back in the
day, possibly being able to heal her team in addition to providing them with shields.
Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot to speculate about her abilities either at this
point, which is why I want to close out this video now by asking the question of when we
can expect her to become a hero in game.
Will she be Hero 30 specifically?
Well, maybe not, but I do think it'll be very soon.
Probably within the next three heroes.
Considering that she's featured in an animated short, and unlike Brigitte who just played
a side character role in Honor and Glory, Reunion was quite clearly a way of introducing
this character to the world as being a likely future Hero.
So, unless there are other heroes which Blizzard feels need to be pushed out earlier for whatever
reason, I imagine she's likely quite far along in development and therefore could be
coming very soon.
I'd say expect her by Blizzcon 2019 at the latest, but we'll just have to wait and
see.
And that does it for everything we know so far about Echo.
Definitely a future hero, and if there's any new information about her revealed, I'll
be sure to post it in the pinned comment below, so be sure to check that for any updates.
Let me know your thoughts about her and whether you'd like to see Echo in game, and as always
