Mahler's Symphony No.5 - Inside the music with Jonathan James - Duration: 3:20.
now I can't possibly do justice to
Mahler's mighty 5th symphony in just a
matter of minutes so let me just try and
give some context for it. With his first
four symphonies he was basing quite a
lot of the musical material on a set of
songs that speak of the joy of nature.
This is someone whistling as they go
across the fields for example [plays]
...that kind of material is light and skippy
fast-forward to the fifth symphony and the
sixth and they're both based on a new
poet and a new set of songs. This is his
famous ich bin der velt at hannon kakum,
'I've taken leave of the world' [plays]
And it's these hushed mysterious tones
and poetry which question existence
which makes their way into Mahler's fifth
symphony most notably actually in the
love letter that is the Fourth Movement
the famous adagietto [plays]
I hope you can hear how they're related.
So Mahler's Symphony number five occupies
this darker world and it starts with a
very grim funeral march. [Plays] Just blast it
out on a bugle or equivalent. And after
that we get these really cruel parodies
of a waltz or a ländler and it's not
until the third part where we hear that
love letter the Adagietto that you've just
heard, and we get this kind of material [plays]
we end in other words with a joyous
March go from a funeral march to
something so filled with joy in musical
terms from this key [plays] shifting up into
this [plays] it's Mahler's victory symphony
Mahler's fifth symphony tends to be the
