- I'm here in beautiful Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
where I've just wrapped up two days
of mastermind meetings with eight or nine other
top business leaders and entrepreneurs.
It's been just a tremendously enriching time,
not just because of the gorgeous scenery,
but because of this, that poor minds compete with
one another, but rich minds empower one another.
And that's what we've done while we gathered here.
We just spent time out on the water,
having some great food, having deep, rich conversations
about what it's like to run a business
and how to balance that with life, and what life
and business make possible for all of us
and the impact that we ultimately want to have.
And one of the most practical exercises
that we engaged in was just sharing our top three books.
The three most influential books that we've all read
in our lives, so if you click the link
to this video in the post, you'll see that book list
that I've curated for you.
It's just a very, very rich list of resources.
And here's why I read books, because you can't
outperform your self image, ultimately you can't
outperform your self image, and if you're launching
a business it's really important that you get around
rich minds to change that mindset, to shape that mindset,
to stir up belief and clarity in you.
And then you come to meetings like this
where you deepen the connections that you have
with other folks that are doing what you're doing,
and you can see the seaplane taking off behind me,
and hear the noise, and when you get in situations like this
and settings like this, your life just kind of ramps up
to take off, and so I wanna share three books
with you that have really impacted me.
Number one, and these are in no particular order,
is a book called Essentialism, by Greg McKeown.
It really taught me, I read it recently,
really taught me to narrow down and focus on doing
the one thing that makes everything else in life
easier, and all the other hard stuff unnecessary.
So Essentialism by Greg McKeown.
Number two, Necessary Endings by Henry Cloud,
which really taught me that endings
are just as natural and normal a part of life
as new beginnings, we love new beginnings.
As folks that are future oriented, we always talk
about what is next, and what's coming,
but for you to say yes to something
you have to say no to a lot of other things,
and necessary endings really helped me understand that.
If I could share real quick a picture about
what he shares in that book, if you think about
rose bushes or tomato plants and these plants,
or rose bushes, they bear so much fruit,
so much that they can't even sustain it.
I remember years ago just seeing my wife
plant a tomato plant and she had to prop it up
on these wires because the weight of the tomatoes,
of the fruit that that plant was bearing,
was too much for the plant itself to sustain.
Isn't that true of our lives?
If you're a creative person, you're creating content,
you're an entrepreneur, a business owner,
or you're an aspiring one, there's so much
that you're good at, so much fruit that you bear,
that your life can't even sustain it,
and so you gotta cut off the good things
in order to divert and dedicate the resources
that you have to the best things.
The third book that I've really enjoyed
is Co-Dependent No More, and years ago
this was a book that, gonna step inside here
because it's getting noisy, a book that really shaped
the way that I saw business in life,
and Co-Dependent No More by Melody Beattie,
just a terrific book that really taught me
that the only person I could control was me.
And that's really shaped the way
that I've seen business and life.
It's allowed me to keep myself from being
over responsible for others and to be
over responsible for myself, if that makes sense.
So to be fully responsible for myself
and not be over responsible for others.
Co-Dependent No More by Melody Beattie.
These are just some of the things that I've taken away
from spending time here in Coeur d'Alene,
and if you just, again click the link for this video
below you'll see the list of books that we've shared
with one another and I highly suggest you check them out.
Just a list of very, very rich resources.
Again, you can't out perform your self image,
so start getting around other people that'll build you up
and tap into this simple truth, that again,
poor minds compete with one another,
but rich minds empower one another.
This is Mike Kim, thanks for watching, hope you have
a great day, check out some of those books below.
