One hundred years ago,

an armistice brought an end to four years of war

that led to the deaths of more than

16 million soldiers and civilians.

This ceasefire was intended to mark

the end of "the war to end all wars,"

but its promise remains elusive.

As the world meets in Paris to mark the

centennial of this armistice, we need

to learn from the tragedies of the

20th century and apply those lessons

to the threats from cyber weapons that

we confront today.

In this edition of "Today in Technology," we head to

Europe, and sacred ground so marked

by the scars of battle, it was called

"No Man's Land."

We are in the large Douaumont cemetery,

which is a massive cemetery for the

graves of French soliders.

This is truly France's largest memorial cemetery

for the battle of Verdun.

The battle of Verdun is a tremendous

memory, a tremendous trauma,

and for France, it is truly the mother of all battles.

There were 300,000 dead,

including 160,000 French dead

and 140,000 German dead,

a large portion of whom are still

on the battlefield because they

disappeared into the earth somewhere.

Verdun would then be established as

a general historical reference.

Very often, when we talk about another battle,

we say, "its a Verdun."

World War I began when governments failed to adapt

to a changing world and diplomacy between nations collapsed.

As if on autopilot, governments across Europe

headed into battle rather than to the negotiating table.

Many thought it would be a short and even glorious war.

When the battle began,

it was a battle between men,

but it was also a battle where artillery played an important role.

It became a battle between men and machines.

World War I began as an infantry war,

meaning men, or cavalries, fighting each other.

Very quickly it became a mechanical war,

it became an industrial war.

The major factor in the war of 1914-1918

was the industry behind it,

that is, all the industrial progress:

artillery, gases, air forces,

machine guns that would progress considerably.

The majority of casualties in Verdun

not die in hand-to-hand combat.

They were killed by artillery.

So this industrial war, what was the impact on

civilians who lived in the area?

In Paris, there were many bombardments

that killed huge numbers of civilians.

ln Romania 75% of those killed were civilians.

In Serbia, it was the civilians who died en masse.

The First World War was truly disruptive,

both demographic in terms of residents,

but even more so, disruptive in people's minds.

When the war ended, the treaties that followed focused

on strengthening democracies and

international cooperation.

But instead, weapons and militarization advanced

while human institutions failed to keep pace.

Ovet he next two decades, biplanes became bombers.

and an experiment in trenches became tanks.

But democracies weakened, multilateralism

withered and the League of Nations died.

Just 21 years after the

Armistice, a geopolitical fire erupted

into another war that would envelop

Europe, kill even more civilians and

literally sweep the world.

With the vantage point in history, what were

the causes of World War I?

First of all,

no one imagined that the war would start.

Even though, when we look at it today,

we can see that everything was poised for this war.

We can see, for example, that in Europe,

armament had escalated tremendously.

Do you see any similarities between 1914 and today?

You can get the same anxiety when you see

the rapid progression of armaments in the world.

We are exactly in the same situation

of arms progression as between 1910 and 1913.

Today, a new generation of

technology has created a new era of

cyberweapons that threatens civilians

with indiscriminate attacks on the

digital infrastructure that powers our

economies and everyday lives.

Last year nearly a billion people were

victims of cyberattacks, including

attacks that shut down hospitals,

interfered with democratic elections, and

forced small businesses to close their doors.

As was the case after World War I,

technology is racing forward.

Now the challenge is for human institutions

to keep pace. The world needs to do

better than it did a century ago.

Doing better this century will require

collective action, quickly, not just

by governments and countries, but

by tech companies, the business community,

NGOs, and civil society.

It will require that we heed the voices of the

citizens of the world, people who

are making clear their support for a

world made safe for digital peace.

On Time - Duration: 4:15.

It is a rainy, thundery night in New York City.

Rain is one my favorite things in the whole wide world. So I thought I would share it with you

And if I sort of stretch my premise, it's appropriate to our topic today...sort of.

As you probably know

one of the ways that I got more comfortable with auditioning and better at it was by

looking at some of the

microscopic steps along the way,

and finding places where maybe my thinking about it wasn't exactly

logical or sensible.

And today I'm gonna talk about one of those things. Today I'm gonna talk about being late.

What happens when you're running late to an audition?

Microscopic part of the process that usually doesn't happen.

However, it can trip you up, and that's why I'm talking about it.

And so my excuse for the rain link is that weather can make you late... I tried.

I started to notice that when I was running late,

my stress level would rise.

And I would start to feel as if something was at risk.

Something was in danger of going terribly wrong.

As I've revisited that idea, I've realized that first of all,

it is so rare for me to enter the casting office at the time that I was slated to go in.

They're always running late. Almost always.

It's rare that they're not running late. That's the norm.

So chances are if you're running late, you'll be walking in at the perfect time.

Secondly, (with the exception of certain kinds of theater auditions),

there's not a huge penalty or risk going on.

You could be late and go up to the casting associate

as I've done many times

and say, "I got here a little late. My name is Michael Kostroff."

And they go, "No problem. We'll put you in next."

And everybody goes on with their lives.

If you've gotten yourself worked up and aggravated,

that can really pull you out of your work. You come in flustered.

It makes it harder for you to do what we need to do which is act.

And really, that's all we should be thinking about.

As you know I teach this: not trying to get a job, not trying to impress anybody,

not trying to to show how prompt we are,

but just doing the acting work that the scene requires.

And you can get to that work more effectively if you haven't gotten yourself aggravated about being late.

It's one of those things that's not as dire as you think it is.

And I want you to start to look at

what is happening with your anxiety when you're running late. And in that moment, as I do, remind yourself

"Hey...

No tragedy." I have to do this with myself, honestly.

"First of all, you're not that late," ('cause it's usually like 5 minutes),

"and second of all, it's all gonna be okay."

That's my message du jour. I would love to hear some of your stories about running late.

And maybe you're all on time and I'm just talking to myself, but that's unlikely.

I have a feeling that some of you have circumstances beyond your control

that make you late for auditions. And now you can not worry about it.

One more thing.

You don't have to come in gushing apologies either.

Chances are no one has noticed.

They're not standing by the door with a time clock going, "You're 30 seconds late." They're all busy running a casting session.

They've got other things to do that have nothing to do with you.

If you could start to think of it as less of a big deal you'll be doing yourself a favor. All right. Take care

Don't be late. All right. Goodbye.

Chelsea transfer live: Sarri's dilemma, Blues in race against time to sign £45m man, Hazard's future - Duration: 1:49.

Chelsea in race for £45million-rated Benfica star.Chelsea face a race against time to sign attacking midfielder Joao Felix after Benfica offered him a new deal with a massive £105million get-out clause

Felix is said to be close to agreeing the contract, which could well put him out of the reach of the Blues for the time being

Maurizio Sarri has been closely watching the new star of Portuguese football after a stunning start to the season – especially as the 18-year-old's current deal sets his fee at a more affordable £45million

Fenix is seen as one of the brightest young players coming through the ranks in his homeland, and has two senior goals for the Eagles to his name already

Clubs in Italy and Spain are also on his trail, while West Ham tried to seal a switch last month

But sources in Portugal say the player could agree a new deal at Benfica as early as Monday unless Chelsea step in

Motivational Monday 11 - DON'T EVER TELL ME THAT YOU DON4T HAVE THE TIME!!! - Duration: 2:26.

I have a super stuffed nose but that's no excuse because this is a message I

really need all of you and I mean all of you to understand. Almost every single day

whenever i ask my friends like you know what are your dreams what are your ideas

what projects do you have what do you want to do with your life and how you can

get started. They tell me their big plans, their projects, their dream jobs or

dream house and stuff like that cuz I'm like yo what are you waiting on just

go do it go do it right now. I make a plan for them and

everything and you know what they tell me they just say I don't have enough time

and I'm just standing there looking and I'm like you don't have enough time

are you kidding me are you kidding me I mean like here most of the time we go to

school or go to work for eight hours okay so that's eight hours out of your

life okay and then let's just say we sleep the normal time you see eight

house as well that's 16 hours okay now most people are going to say "ah but Franck-Maleek"

probably gonna say that there's eight more hours

what about eating and all that okay sure will take that into count. Eating

taking a shower all that we can put that into two hours and a half okay two

hours and a half so how much time you have left five hours in a half right

what can you do it five hours that's actually going to help you that's the

time that you have most people are just probably watching a movie, watching some

Netflix doing something that's not helping them reach their goals. Probably eating a bag

of patato chips. Doing something that's not gonna help them. I mean let's take a

great example someone who wants to get into shape, someone who wants to hit the gym. and

they're like ah I don't know if I have the time to go to the gym and everything like that

and I'll just ask them are you probably watching a movie or a series on Netflix

and they say yeah: "I watch two episodes every single day" I'd been like so wait

wait each episode is about like 30 minutes right, and they'd be like yeah

meaning that's one hour you're wasting right there one hour you could be using

to go to gym and get the results that you want the results that you need

you're just too lazy to prioritize your priorities that are actually gonna help you. I'm to tell you

one thing it's not that you don't have enough time

you're just not prioritizing properly and also just wasting time doing useless

stuff if there's one thing I want you to leave this video with is with a mindset

a mentality, a killer instinct, to not waste your time and use all the free time

well not all of it, but the most of it too as it builds on whenever help me

Time Warpers - My idea(s) [Part 2] - Duration: 1:52.

Hey there, welcome to the second video of this series, I hope you enjoy it!

This time the idea is a little bit more crazy.

I was thinking about the possibility to upgrade the Hoverbike for a specific amount of Time Cubes, which obviously needs to be balanced in some way.

It basically acts like the normal one, but it can carry up to 4 people (Upgradeable, the first version of it 2, the second 3 and the third one 4).

The more people, the better it is, for every person on it they get a boost in terms of damage and gold found.

My idea would be as following: 1 Person - 1.00x Gold / DPS 2 Persons - 1.33x Gold / DPS 3 Persons - 1.66x Gold / DPS 4 Persons - 2.00x Gold / DPS

Now you are probably thinking about balancing, in terms of how the 4 people on the vehicle can advance together,

since it is possible that somebody needs for example for zone 135 7 waves and someone else maybe 4 for it.

I think this would not be such a huge deal, as in the last video I made something very quickly to visualize it for you.

Here you can see a good example for different people playing together. We just add the individual numbers and divide the result with the number of players in the vehicle.

In that case it would need (rounded up) 6 waves for the team to advance to the next zone.

I think this would fit very nicely into the game, people would try and interact with each other even more than they already do!

As always, thanks for watching and have a great time warp back to your universe!

Why Is Being On Time Important? - Duration: 8:08.

Beyond time. Beyond time for everything. Why is being on time so important?

Let's hit 5 top reasons for this today. And starting with probably the

most obvious 1. Being on time demonstrates responsibility. This is a

sign of moral maturity. In my parenting courses, I teach that there are 3

stages of moral development. At stage 1, the earliest stage is very selfish. Very

self-centered. It tends to be demanding and entitled. Stage 2, is a little a

higher level. That's where we stop fighting and we start cooperating. We

don't want any trouble. We want to keep the peace. We're willing to negotiate and

work out a win-win kind of a solution. Stage 3 is the most mature of the

3 stages and it's characterized by responsibility and initiative and the

willingness to serve and have empathy. Notice that this involves getting

outside of your own mind and connecting with the impact that

you're having on other people and systems in your world. So, being on time

demonstrates this responsibility, this level of moral maturity that you're able

to not only track your own behaviors but appreciate the impact that it has on

other people. Which leads me right into point number 2, being on time shows

respect. When I'm late, what am I really saying to other people?

"Oh, your stuff isn't it important. My stuff is what's really important. It

doesn't matter what you're doing. Not really. What I'm doing is what's

important." See that's the subtle message that is sent and it's not always even so

subtle is it. Sometimes it's in your face. It's as blatant as I just said it. That

you're not important, I'm important. You wait for me, the respect that we

demonstrate when we're on time acknowledges to other people that we see

their schedule and their activities as being important as well. High level of

respect. The third point, being on time demonstrates humility. Humility. You know,

as opposed to that destructive pride that we all have... I know, sorry to bring

that up again. But we do. We get so stuck in our own perceptions and how prideful

is it to say that I am so important and more important than everybody else. Now,

I'm not saying you're not important. You are just like everybody else is. So, this

destructive pride that I'm talking about is where we know that we're right and we

bulldoze through life with our own agenda without regard to what's going on

for other people. Being on time demonstrates humility. Your willingness

to fit into the social fabric that exists out there. As a contributor, yes.

But not as the king of the world. This humility will help us to connect with

other people and actually sets us up for point number 4, being on time

increases influence. It sets you up as a powerful contributor to the

conversations that are going on. It shows in a subtle way, like we talked about in

the earlier points that you are morally mature, that you can respect other people,

that you have a humility that allows you to actually be a powerful leader.

People will look at you differently as you show up on time. Now, let's take

another little twist to this thing. Being on time has a whole lot to do with your

positive mental health. And it actually symbolizes how you handle every other

aspect of life. My friend and colleague Art Coombs who has been here on the show

before, tells a story about our mutual friend, Kirk Weisler, who was

interviewing someone about being on time. And the point that Kirk made to this

person was, "You're not just late for work, you're

late for your life. You're late for your son's soccer game, you're late for your

wife's birthday, you're late for your anniversary, you're late for your workout

routine, you're late for breakfast, you're late for life." This symbolizes how you

show up in your life. And beyond that, it's about how we think. Try this out for

just a minute. When you think, "Oh, I'm late. I'm behind

schedule, I'm not on time." And we get that way sometimes, don't we? In our thinking,

in our goals, in our career. we think that we're behind, that we're late. what

happens to your feelings when you switch that up and take this position? "I'm right

on schedule. I'm right on time. in fact, I'm a little early to the game." how does

that feel? it feels totally different which is a great reason to be on time. it

enhances your own mental health to think, "I'm right on time, I'm right on schedule."

Now, it's a choice. I have had many

opportunities to work with groups that have regular meetings and it's so

interesting to see how people handle being on time or not being on time. And

you know what? It doesn't matter what time the meeting is. I've been associated

with groups that meet early in the morning or late in the evening. And it

doesn't matter. The same people show up late no matter what time the meeting is

scheduled. It's not about what time the meeting starts. It's about what is your

commitment to yourself and others. What is your level of moral development? When

you take this seriously and start showing up on time, start being on time.

It changes the game for you and for everyone around you. So it's not just

about fulfilling the requirement. This is about our mental health.

You can also power up your mental help through the positive personal

development playlist here at Live On Purpose TV. I hope you'll check it out.

Joni's Corner: A View From The End Time - Duration: 1:42.

Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada. The Apostle Paul really experienced

tough times, wouldn't you agree? Getting stoned, getting beaten, flogged, put in

prison. And yet, he writes, "our light and momentary troubles are achieving for

us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." Well, I would think that his

troubles were anything but light and his perspective used to drive me crazy.

Because when I was first paralyzed, I mean... my sufferings felt overwhelming.

When the Bible would tell me to 'rejoice in my suffering' my first thought

was, "okay sure, I'll rejoice the day that God gets me out of this stupid

wheelchair," but years later the light began to dawn. The spirit inspired

writers of the Bible simply... they just had an end of time view from Heaven's

perspective. Our troubles really are lightweight in comparison with the

glories to be revealed. And one day... something, so grand and so glorious is

going to happen, on that awesome day - that it will suffice for all your tears,

all your pain, all the inconveniences of my disability. So friend, keep that as your

perspective and life's problems will seem light and even momentary.

For The First Time In History Republicans Will Go Into Election Day With Vote Lead(VIDEO)!!! - Duration: 10:11.

For The First Time In History Republicans Will Go Into Election Day With Vote Lead

Ron de santé stay with us he's a smart guy he's a great guy and he'll keep your

jobs going way up he'll keep your taxes going way down

Ron stands one hundred percent with the men and women of law enforcement like we

all do President Trump at a rally in Pensacola Florida last night stumping

for both Republican Governor Rick Scott who's running for Senate and the man who

wants to replace him as governor former Republican congressman Ron de Santos De

Santis is in a heated race against Democrat and Tallahassee mayor Andrew

Gilliam the very latest Real Clear Politics average shows just how close

this race is with Gilliam leading to Santos by less than three percentage

points joining me right now exclusive interview Florida Republican

gubernatorial candidate Ron de Santos before we begin we extended an

invitation to Andrew Gilliam to join the program we did not hear back from mr.

Gilliam people thanks so much for joining us our good to see you

good morning well I guess first give me the state of affairs I know Florida has

long been unpredictable but it has appeared to be a red state for a long

time now certainly small government low taxes no income tax or individuals and

yet you're trailing Gilliam who is a self Staind progressive who wants to

raise taxes what happened to Florida well we're not trailing in actual people

who have voted Murray I mean you know we have more than half the vote has been

cast if you look at the early and absentee votes Republicans are leading

for the first time ever at this stage I mean Donald Trump was down a hundred and

seventy-five thousand Republican votes going into election day in 2016 he won

by about 175,000 we are going to be going into election day as Republicans

for the first time in recent Florida history up going into election day and a

lot of our voters will not vote early they will not try to do absentee they

want to vote on election day so I think our turnout is exactly what we need to

be able to win you know if you have a pole that protects a

democratic wave that's going to show something different than what's actually

happening on the ground so I think we're in good shape and I think the reason why

we've been able to mobilize Republicans so much is precisely because of the

contrast you you talked about people understand what is made Florida

successful we have had limited government we have had a pro-business

climate and a low tax environment that allows us to drive investment from

higher tax states and I think we're poised to do better than ever Murray I

mean you get you know in New York people are going to be filling out their taxes

in the spring the salt deduction is going to be gone and I think that's

going to cause an even increase flood of investment into in Florida if we have

good leadership and good tax policy Andrew Gilliam wants a 40% tax increase

that will kill jobs cause businesses to leave and it'll stop the historic flow

of investment coming into Florida it would be a big mistake and I think

Republican voters in particular real eyes that that's why they're coming out

in droves Andrew Gilliam said that he does want to

raise corporate taxes let's go through some of the proposals and really your

platform versus gillum's he's also said that he wants health care to be he

thinks health care should be a fundamental right for everyone meaning

Medicare for all what is your platform right now well Murray understand and you

pointed on the last segment Medicare for all is Medicare for none it abolished is

Medicare Medicare Advantage and forces seniors onto a government-run a new

government-run system Florida seniors do not want that it also takes away

people's employer-provided health benefits that they're earning in their

jobs it makes that illegal and it forces them on to a government single-payer

system so that would upend the lives of millions and millions of Floridians of

course it would require massive tax increase it would bankrupt us the

program would hemorrhage money and you'd have rationing and less access to care

so it is something that I think is totally unacceptable in Florida and so I

want to protect people's benefits that they've earned I don't think government

should be taking that away from anybody how important is a Republican victory in

Florida going into the 2020 election the re-election of Donald Trump well I think

it's important for the state of Florida to build off the momentum we've had I

mean governor Scott has done a great job focused

jobs and the economy has gotten even better with President Trump being in

office and enacting pro-growth policies and so clearly Florida I think with me

as governor will continue to be a success story so as we're going into

2020 that'll be good for the president politically but it also be an

opportunity for Floridians to vote at the presidential level and say okay

things are going well we're on the right track

let's keep it going if you have Gilliam as governor you know he's really gonna

wreck a lot of the momentum that we've had and I just think it would be more

difficult all the way around for the national stuff let me let me ask you

about foreign policy from I'm a doer very former military man served served

our country tomorrow Iran sanctions will take effect the u.s. slapping sanctions

on Iran over energy I'm about to speak with Prince Alwaleed of Saudi Arabia

where do you stand in terms of the u.s. is positioned with the Saudis and the

u.s. is positioned with Iran real quick the president's absolutely right these

sanctions are the right move ever since he nixed the Iran deal the

Iranian regime is on the defensive the economy's hurting this will continue to

weaken them that's exactly what you need to do they're the world's leading state

sponsor of terrorism they want to annihilate Israel they're hostile to us

to their core this is the right policy and I support the president at 100% we

will leave it there we will see you soon we'll be watching the developments know

you have a big Tuesday coming up thank you very much trying to Santa so good to

see you sir thank you welcome back u.s. job growth exceeding expectations in

October the Labor Department announcing Friday that 250,000 jobs were added to

the economy in October while the unemployment rates held steady at 3.7

percent which is a 49 year low these numbers giving President Trump something

to brag about heading into this Tuesday but will the good times continue for the

economy and your 401 K Larry Kudlow is with me the director of the National

Economic Council and assistant to the president for Economic Policy he joins

me now in an exclusive interview Larry it's always a pleasure to see you thank

you so much for being here thanks Maria appreciate it that's always very good

numbers got wages up 3.1 percent but of course the markets have been very

volatile and nervous that the good times are not sustainable that a slowdown is

the horizon are you worried about a slowdown on the horizon I'm not right I

mean I hear all this stuff of that sugar high and temporary and not sustainable I

mean for one thing that 250,000 getting employment which was you know a

blockbuster I remember told president about it

Thursday evenings ooh whoa whoa and Kevin Hassett and I were really

surprised look you got 3.1 percent rise in wages you got 250,000 we're running

solidly you know the biggest beneficiary no fishy areas are Maria blue-collar

workers take a look at the numbers the employment increase is largely centered

on blue-collar workers there the big winners fastest since the 80s and they

are the ones experiencing the largest wage gains blue-collar workers of beaten

white-collar workers I'm nothing against white collar workers

I'm just saying this is a very depth you know it's reaching down deep into the

blue collar area that is precisely what we wanted with our supply-side tax cuts

across the board and deregulation of the president's program you just heard

Democratic congressman Tim Ryan from Ohio on this program right and he said

83% of the tax cut plan went to the top one percent what's your answer to that I

push back on Heidi's away I don't know where mr. Ryan gets that number I have

respect for him he is rather more moderate Democrat but those kinds of

nickel nitpicking and ankle-biting I don't know where that thing comes from

you know when we put this program in place when President Trump ran this in

2016 Kevin Hassett and I and laugher and so forth worked on it we believed that

the tax cuts for corporations large and small the marginal tax rate reductions

okay now down 21% for companies large companies that's a 19% for small

companies the biggest beneficiary would be ordinary working folks love blue

collars and that is precisely what the data is showing

know where mr. Ryan and others together there's been Kevin Brady the chairman of

House Ways and Means joined me last week and he said he is now working on an

additional tax cut that the president wants to cut taxes for the middle class

by 10% and make the individual cuts permanent if the economy is going so

great why do you have to cut taxes again well look I think the I think the mayor

permanent for the personal taxes which would include small business very

important and I think Kevin Brady is exactly right we are noodling about an

additional 10% middle-class tax cut just noodling looking at different plans okay

we will see but look the great story of 2018 you said it I think in the break

but it's the economy stupid we are growing you know three point five

percent in q3 four point two percent in q2 three percent over all my friends on

the other side of the aisle said you couldn't be - we are now beating three

solutely this is the biggest single story of 2018

thank you god bless you and God bless america
