That's what I love about it.
♪ (hard rock music) ♪
- (FBE) So today, we're going to have you
read some lyrics from top songs by an artist
and have you tell us the meaning and what you think,
then you'll get to listen to the songs you read
and tell us your thoughts. - Okay, okay.
Good. Music, yes.
- I love what you guys do because you introduce
a lot of new information, new ideas, new artists.
I like it.
- You know, I'm not that up-to-date on many current artists.
There are a lot that I really, really am impressed with,
but, you know, I'm just curious, always curious.
- I just like something pure, creative, powerful,
you know, sends a message.
- Until the melody is there, many times I don't get the lyric.
- I try to keep an open mind about all music,
so, you know, I hope that I do like it,
especially if the lyrics are well written.
- (FBE) Okay, here is your first song lyric.
- "But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach,
diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don't care.
We aren't caught up in your love affair.
And we'll never be royals. It don't run in our blood."
- Lorde. (chuckling)
It's one of my favorite songs.
- It sounds like somebody's saying, "We ain't like them.
They got this and we're over here.
We got that."
- She well defines it, the difference,
and she paints a hell of a picture with her lyrics.
I will say that.
- It's good because what they're saying is that
they don't care about the material things.
- We don't need any of that.
We're good with just who we are, which is kind of refreshing.
- It's good advice in life because it's really easy
to get carried away with yourself and think you just got to have
the latest fancy thing.
And, you know, coming from an old person,
none of that's gonna matter later in your life.
- "Call all the ladies out, they're in their finery.
A hundred jewels on throats, a hundred jewels between teeth."
- "Now bring my boys in, their skin in craters like the moon.
The moon we love like a brother, while he glows through the room."
- All the accessory jewels, all the bling,
a hundred jewels between their teeth--
I guess gold teeth, diamonds, implanted whatever.
- They're kind of rebelling against refinery
and accoutrements, outside appearance looking,
as opposed to now bringing in my boys-- they're different.
- Doesn't matter that maybe physically they're not as perfect,
but they have that inner charisma that attracts you to them.
- "We live in cities you'll never see onscreen.
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things.
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams.
And you know we're on each other's team."
- So maybe they're living where it's not really beautiful,
like a wonderful palace.
Maybe it's just a rundown place.
- The cities you see onscreen are, for the most part, high-end cities,
and everyone's presented a pretty picture.
- She has a way of communicating with those who aren't famous.
Not everybody grows up like the Kardashians
in a wealthy family with celebrities as their parents.
They live in ordinary cities. They have to find their own way.
- It's got a nice rhyme to it, and a nice rhythm to it,
and I like the message, you know?
"We're on each other's team."
I think we all need to be on a good team sometime.
- They know that unlike maybe the rich people,
they take care of each other and they got each other's back,
and that's a good thing.
- "I'm a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm.
And the scars that mark my body, they're silver and gold.
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones.
It keeps my veins hot, the fire's found a home in me."
- Well, this person is really trying to separate themselves,
at least in the lyric, from material things
and what's in the soul.
- They like themselves.
They see themselves as still somebody very valuable.
- I might have scars.
I might not have a perfect body.
I might, you know, I might have-- but to me, those are treasures
because I'm precious just the way I am.
I'm good enough.
- "My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones."
See, that's beautiful.
"The fire's found a home in me."
So whatever her purpose in what she wants to do in life
has found a home in her, so she can pursue it.
- Just seems like this person has got this motivation
that's just pumping that heart.
That heart rate's up like they're doing cardio all the time
in their life to achieve these goals.
- "I never watch the stars, there's so much down here.
So I just try to keep up with them.
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart."
- The first line says it all. "I never watch the stars,
there's so much down here."
Everything in this person's mind, or at least in the lyric,
is created inside.
- The fame, the star, isn't the goal.
It's just the better life.
- With the amount of time that we have,
we want to focus on what we're good at
and that keeps her motivated.
- When you get a little older, it's like, "It's okay to watch it.
I'll catch up."
And just to enjoy the moment.
And I like the "red, orange, yellow flicker beats sparking up my heart."
I mean, it's just very visual. It's very pretty.
- "Well, those great whites, they have big teeth.
Hope they bite you.
Thought you said that you would always be in love.
But you're not in love no more."
- Apparently, this is someone that has been hurt
and is wishing that something bad happens
to the person that really hurt them.
- He fell out of love with me.
I hope the shark eats you because you're bad, boy,
because you promised and you reneged on your promise,
and you're not in love with me no more,
so I don't value you and I think you should come to a bad end.
- That really hurts.
If you've ever had a very intimate relationship,
where the love was-- you thought it went both ways, you know?
- "Always be in love."
Well, you go in hoping that, but the reality
is usually a little different coming from an older person.
- "But I hear sounds in my mind.
Brand new sounds in my mind.
But, honey, I'll be seeing you wherever I go.
But, honey, I'll be seeing you down every road.
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it."
- You're leaving, but that green light,
if I get it, I'll come back.
- Everywhere I go, there's a memory with you
that I'll still be seeing and, you know, if that chance
comes up, I'm waiting for it, the green light, I want it
of maybe we could try again.
- It sounds like they still are going to hope.
They're not gonna sit and wait, but they're not--
they're hoping they'll get back together at some point.
- I think that this is a healthier point of view,
to try to move on even though the ghost of this person
is with you in your heart and your mind and your soul,
you need to let go.
It's hard sometimes, but you have to let go.
