Chiptune Tech: Ep.6 – DMG-01 and Chiptune Music - Duration: 9:22.

artists, tech-heads and writers with a passion for chiptune music, retro gaming and old computers.

The next few episodes I'll be going over a number of Nintendo Handhelds

and how well they stack up when it comes to making chiptune music in this episode.

I'll be talking about the pros and cons of the DMG-01 Game Boy for making chiptune music.

The DMG-01 Game Boy is the original Gameboy that was released in 1989.

It took four AA batteries and came with a nostalgia invoking

green-tinted LCD screen.

Let us start out with the positives of the DMG-01 Game Boy.

The Audio quality you can get out of the DMG-01 is great. Out of the first 6 models of Game Boys,

the DMG-01, the Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Light, the Game Boy Color, the Gameboy Advance and

the Game Boy Advance SP. The pro-sound mod makes the biggest impact on the DMG-01.

The low end frequencies are pushed and you can get really good bass from it.

It is a night and day difference and adds a lot of firepower to the DMG-01.

For audio samples comparing the DMG-01 Game Boy with and without the pro-sound mod please listen to Episode 2 of Chiptune Tech.

The DMG-01 is amazing for modding. I feel out of all the models of Game Boys,

the DMG-01 has the most aftermarket support when it comes to modifications for making chiptune music

You can get backlights, 74HC04 hex inverter chips,

variable speed oscillators to adjust clock speed of the CPU,

arduino boy integration for MIDI implementation,

internal RGB lighting,

custom colored cases and even silicon buttons.

Another thing that makes the DMG-01 desirable for modding is the through-hole design of its PCBs. A

PCB, otherwise known as a printed circuit board with through-hole components makes things much easier to work on

versus a PCB with surface mount devices (Known as SMDs) or their related components.

Through-Hole components are much larger than the SMD counterparts and have larger solder pads to solder to. A

shaky-handed novice modder can use most any readily available

soldering iron or soldering gun and get into modding their DMG-01 immediately.

Starting with a Game Boy Pocket every Game Boy circuit board thereafter was designed with SMD components.

You can still mod these Game Boys and solder to SMD components, but these components are quite small. You

might need more tools to help you solder such as a helping hands device

which is a stand with articulating arms and alligator clips that help you hold wires or PCBs,

a PCB vice which holds a PCB, and if you're going to get super hardcore a hot air rework station.

The DMG-01 is a favorite for modders because there's a lot of extra space inside the shell.

There are large clearances and gaps between the PCB and the plastic shell inside the DMG-01 allowing you to add extra jacks,

custom PCBs and ports with ease.

NeX, an OG Game Boy modder even integrated a mega memory card, backlight screen, internal case lights,

PS2 Keyboard Socket,

LCD breakout socket and a dual prosound inside a DMG-01. The battery life of the DMG-01 is very formidable.

It lasts upwards of 20 hours on a fresh set of batteries even with the backlight installed.

For those that are looking for more battery life or wanting to avoid using AA batteries

there is documentation of people installing a lithium-ion battery in the battery compartment and

a USB charging circuit with overcharge protection within the case.

Now to the cons;

the LCD screen that comes with the DMG-01 is usable, but lacking the

contrast of the pixels aren't as sharp or as crisp as the Game Boy Pockets LCD screen and the screen is not lit.

For people that are looking for sharper looking more clearly defined pixels you can perform a bivert mod to the screen.

This is usually done in conjunction with a backlight mod

the bivert Mod requires polarizer film and a 74HC04 hex inverter chip or similar chip or

hardware.

The Polarizer film usually comes with DMG-01 and Game Boy Pocket backlight kits.

It looks like a thin sheet of tinted plastic that is cut down to the size of the Game Boys LCD screen.

For those doing the bivert Mod remember to remove the protective layers of plastic on the front and back of the polarizer film

or your screen won't display correctly.

The polarizer film can be installed oriented at a zero degree angle

but if you're rotated 90 degrees the dark pixels will invert to a lighter shade and the lightly shaded pixels will turn dark.

Polarizer films that is attached to the reflective material behind the DMG-01 Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket

LCD screen are installed in a zero degree orientation.

After you remove the polarizer film and the reflective material you will need to install the aftermarket polarizer film in a 90 degree

orientation so that the pixels on the screen are inverted.

the 74HC04 hex inverter chip

will then invert the pixels again on the DMG-01 Game Boy circuit board

resulting in darker more well-defined pixels on the LCD screen.

There's also a way to rewire a Game Boy Pockets

LCD screen to replace the DMG-01 LCD screen for those that want to go the extra mile.

The DMG-01 processor is not the fastest and may have trouble keeping up with high BPM songs in LSDJ.

Songs that run at a very high tempo with intricate table effects tend to cause the DMG-01 CPU to crash.

The DMG-01 even experiences some trouble with being able to playback the noise channel accurately at times

skipping entire notes if there are multiple noise channel instruments with varying shaped commands.

I wanted to see if the issue with the noise channel had to do with the CPU itself,

so I swapped out the DMG-01 CPU with the CPU from a Super Gam e Boy, and it did not make much of a difference.

The Super Gameboy was designed to play DMG-01 Game Boy games on the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo.

The only real difference I noticed on a DMG-01 with a Super Game Boy CPU was that it

skiped the splash screen where the word Nintendo slowly falls from the top of the screen.

There's currently no method of upgrading the CPU to a point where it solves these issues

The timing crystal that the DMG-01 CPU operates with runs at 4,194MHz

and the timing crystal that operates in the Super Game Boy CPU runs at 4.295MHz.

That's a 2.4% difference in speed.

I suspect that maybe running a timing crystal that is clocked at double the speed of the DMG-01 timing crystal

might give more promising results.

But since the Game Boys processor will be running at twice the speed

the songs Tempo would need to be dropped to half of the original song speed in order to play at the correct speed.

However

I have heard that running the DMG-01 at half speed or double speed

can cause weird issues with the pitch and tone of the notes being played in LSDJ

There are definitely other Game Boy models that can handle higher tempo songs with intricate table effect commands better than the DMG-01 and

those will be addressed in future episodes of Chiptune Tech.

As of the time of this recording

December 20th 2016

DMG-01 Game Boys are plentiful and supply and are cheap.

I feel a good condition unmodified DMG-01 'grey boy'

Shouldn't cost you any more than $25 to $30 on the high end.

Play it Loud models may cost more depending on rarity.

If you live stateside (USA) second-hand video game stores, swap-meetss garage sales,

Goodwill and eBay are common places to find a DMG-01

Game Boy.

You may also be able to find modified DMG-01 Game Boys on chipmusic.org

All-in-all the DMG-01 is a favorite amongst chiptune artists and a great place to start in terms of hardware for

Composing music on LSDJ and nanoloop. If you're going to start out on Nintendo hardware

I suggest starting out with a DMG-01 Game Boy. All relevant links about topics

I talked about will be listed in the annotations of this episode on

you have any questions concerns or comments

we'd love to hear from you the listener.

what your favorite color is or what you want to hear about from us in the future.

That's it for me for this episode of Chiptune Tech. Thank you all for listening and again: happy modding!

Talking about MUSIC | Type of Music Phrases&Expressions - Duration: 2:18.

Hello, Everyone!

Welcome back to Real Chinese With Jadie, I am Jadie.

In today's lesson, we are going to talk about music.

We all love listening to music and in fact every one of us appreciate music, right?

Well because it is a universal language.

Of course in Chinese, we talk about music

when we meet new people,

when we are trying to get to know someone better.

Music is always a great topic to talk about.

So in today's lesson we are gonna learn some vocabularies related to music.

So first of all, the most fundamental elements of music are rhythm and melody.

Then we have some genres of music, also known as type of music.

So the main types of music are Pop, Jazz, Rap, Hip Hop, Rock, Electronic, Folk, Country, R&B, Punk, Classical, Heavy Metal.

So the next one is "歌曲", or we often just say "歌" in spoken Chinese.

And the words of a song is called lyrics.

Ok, now let's listen and see how to talk about music in real conversations.

Ok, that's all for today's lesson

Thank you guys for watching, see you next time.

That Time Mozart Pirated a Forbidden Piece of Music from the Catholic Church from Memory - Duration: 9:37.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is known for many things, few

of which we care to cover on this site because you probably already know all about them.

Instead, we prefer to cover things that you likely didn't know, like that the alphabet

song was based on a tune by Mozart, or covering his extremely adult themed works that included

a bit of an obsession with all things scatological, and the significantly more family friendly

subject of today- that time Mozart pirated a cherished choral arrangement from the Vatican,

reportedly all from memory.

That piece was Miserere mei, Deus (literally, "Have mercy on me, O God"), which was

based on Psalm 51 and composed by Catholic priest Gregorio Allegri sometime in the 1630s.

Although today Miserere is regarded as one of the most popular and oft recorded arrangements

of the late Renaissance era, for many years, due to papal decree, if one wanted to hear

it, one had to go to the Vatican.

The punishment for ignoring the ban on copying this music is widely stated by many a reputable

source (as well as Mozart's dad, Leopold) to be excommunication from the Catholic church.

(Although I couldn't find any primary documents that back Pope Urban VIII, or any other Pope,

ever making such an official decree, and various pirated versions of the music are known to

have existed during the moratorium without anyone seeming to have been excommunicated.)

Nevertheless, there was indeed a ban on copying the music that lasted for almost a century

and a half.

To add to the mystique surrounding the piece, it was only allowed to be performed publicly

on two specific days during the Holy Week (the week before Easter)- Holy Wednesday and

Good Friday.

(And if you're curious, see: Why Determining Easter's Date is So Confusing) All this,

combined with the superior acoustics of the Sistine Chapel and the unparalleled talent

of the Papal Choir resulted in the piece becoming an almost mythical entity, with people travelling

from across the globe to hear it performed in all its glory.

Though the Vatican refused for many years to ever release a copy of the sheet music

for the piece, by the mid eighteenth century the Church had been cajoled into gifting three

copies to prominent individuals.

These individuals were the King of Portugal, famed composer and Catholic friar Giovanni

Battista Martini, and Emperor Leopold I.

In regards to Emperor Leopold, he seems to have heard the piece on a visit to the Vatican

sometime in the late 1600s, becoming enamoured with it.

Leopold used his influence to convince the Pope to give him a copy of the sheet music.

He then summoned the finest singers he had at his command and arranged for a performance

of the piece to be held in the Imperial Chapel in Vienna.

By all accounts, the resulting performance was lacklustre and dull.

This supposedly resulted in the Emperor believing he'd been cheated and given an inferior

copy of the music, sending a courier to the Vatican to explain to the Pope what had happened.

Apparently upset himself over his orders not being followed, the Pope subsequently is said

to have dismissed the Maestro di Cappella who'd provided the music.

As it turns out, Leopold had indeed been sent a genuine copy of the sheet music.

However, over the years the Papal Choir had added many embellishments to the original

work that were not reflected in the sheet music, nor were they seemingly ever written

down.

The story goes that the Maestro di Cappella eventually got his job back when this was

explained to the Pope.

Whether that oft' told story is perfectly accurate or not, Emperor Leopold would later

enshrine the copy of Miserere he'd been given in the Vienna Imperial Library.

This all brings us to 1770 when a 14-year-old Mozart was touring around Italy with his father.

After arriving in Rome, Mozart attended the Holy Wednesday Tenebrae, during which he heard

Miserere in full.

Later that day, Mozart, who was already considered a musical prodigy at this point, transcribed

the entire 15 or so minute piece from memory.

He is also rumoured to have attended the Good Friday performance later that week to hear

it again, helping to improve upon his unauthorised copy.

(Popular myth states that he smuggled his copy into the performance in his hat and corrected

it on the spot.)

Despite knowing that copying the piece was taboo, Mozart's father, Leopold, was reportedly

impressed that his son had managed to transcribe the song from memory, writing in a letter

to his wife dated April 14, 1770:

You have often heard of the famous Miserere in Rome, which is so greatly prized that the

performers are forbidden on pain of excommunication to take away a single part of it, copy it

or to give it to anyone.

But we have it already.

Wolfgang has written it down and we would have sent it to Salzburg in this letter, if

it were not necessary for us to be there to perform it.

But the manner of performance contributes more to its effect than the composition itself.

Moreover, as it is one of the secrets of Rome, we do not wish to let it fall into other hands.

Unlike the other, authorized copies of the piece that existed at the time, Mozart's

supposedly included the multitude of flourishes and ornamental embellishments employed by

the choir that were of fundamental importance to the arrangement, but, as previously stated,

not in the original music by Allegri.

All this said, while that is the widely reported story, it should be noted here that it isn't

actually clear from evidence at hand how accurate Mozart's copy of the piece was, as it has

unfortunately been lost to history, and going off a boasting father's account is somewhat

suspect.

However, for those who support the idea that Mozart made a perfect copy, it is noted that

Miserere is an amazingly repetitive piece, with the gist of most of the arrangement coming

in the first few minutes.

It's also often stated that a short while after transcribing Miserere, Mozart was at

a party with his father when the topic of the tune came up in conversation, at which

point Leopold boasted to the guests that his son transcribed the legendary piece from memory,

prompting some amount of skepticism from the attendees.

However, in attendance at said party was a musician named Christoferi, who'd actually

sung it while a member of the Papal Choir.

After looking over the copy made by Mozart, he supposedly confirmed that it was a faithful

reproduction.

Whether that party anecdote actually happened is as difficult to determine as many other

details of this tale.

But what is 100% verifiable fact is that news of this supposedly extremely accurate unauthorized

copy of Miserere eventually reached Pope Clement XIV (perhaps even via Leopold Mozart himself

spilling the beans to the Pope in a letter).

The Pope then summoned the young composer to Rome while Mozart was travelling through

Naples.

However, rather than being upset or excommunicating Mozart, the Pope was impressed by the young

composer's musical ability and initiative and instead awarded him the Chivalric Order

of the Golden Spur– essentially a Papal knighthood.

This, perhaps, gives credence to the notion that Mozart's copy of the work must have

been reasonably accurate, as presumably the Pope would have checked with his Maestro di

Cappella concerning Mozart's transcription before awarding such an honour.

This knighthood was something Mozart seems to have been extremely proud of, including

frequently wearing the cross medal that came with being knighted.

He also took to signing his name Chevalier de Mozart.

However, in a letter to his father dated October of 1777, the 21 year old Mozart reveals that,

during a concert in which various nobles were in attendance, Mozart wore the mark of his

papal knighthood and the nobles mocked him for it, after which he seems to have ceased

wearing it and further stopped signing his name with the title.

In any event, impressed by Mozart and no doubt realising, both based on Mozart's transcription

of the work and the others that existed at the time, that the cat was out of the bag

(or perhaps simply not caring as his predecessors had), Pope Clement XIV got rid of the ban

concerning copies of the music for Miserere, ostensibly making it available to the masses.

However, due to the abbellimenti that the Papal Choir employed when they performed the

piece, compared to what the stock music said, for almost a century more the true Vatican

version of the song remained something you could only hear at the Vatican.

It wouldn't be until 1840 when a Catholic priest by the name of Pietro Alfieri published

the embellished version of Miserere that the world finally had what is considered to be

an accurate sheet music representation of the Chapel Choir

version

of song.
