That Time When the Elite of the Western World Rented Pineapples by the Hour - Duration: 7:59.

The humble pineapple is most often seen today either sitting proudly in the centre of an

uncomfortably well stocked fruit bowl or being used as the home of a lovable talking sponge.

However, between the 16th and 18th centuries, pineapples were so expensive and rare that

they were often displayed like fine works of art.

Converting exactly how much a whole pineapple cost back in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries

to modern day dollars is almost impossible to do with any real accuracy.

That said, the general ballpark estimates tend to ring in at around five to ten thousand

dollars per pineapple, depending on such things as the quality of the fruit and season.

So how did this particular piece of fruit come to be so valuable?

After the pineapple was first encountered by Europeans on the island of Guadeloupe during

Christopher Columbus' second trip to the Caribbean in November of 1493, efforts were

quickly set in motion to find a way of reliably producing the fruit back in Europe.

(The fruit itself is indigenous to South America and had been cultivated there for centuries

prior to its "discovery" by Columbus.)

Despite sinking vast sums of money into the problem, European royalty, who positively

adored the fruit for its natural sweetness (sugar and sugary items being in short supply),

for centuries after its "discovery" the only real way to obtain a pineapple was to

pay to have one directly imported, which was no cheap affair.

Many transport ships of the age were too slow and conditions too hot aboard the vessels

to keep whole pineapples from rotting during the journey.

So to get a whole pineapple fruit safely from the plant to one's table in Europe took

the fastest ships and most favorable weather conditions.

As a result, virtually the only people who could afford to purchase a whole pineapple,

let alone eat one while it was perfectly ripe, were royalty or the ridiculously wealthy.

The first step to allowing the rich, instead of just the super rich, a chance to own or

even look at a pineapple wouldn't come for another two centuries after its "discovery",

when the Dutch were able to begin successfully cultivating the fruit in the very late 1600s.

Exactly who first managed to grow a pineapple in a non-tropical climate isn't known for

sure, though a woman named Agnes Block is generally credited as being the earliest to

do so around 1687.

While earlier accounts of fruit producing pineapple plants in Europe do exist, whether

or not these plants were cultivated in Europe or simply transferred to the continent as

juveniles isn't clear.

More important than Block in the pineapple saga, however, was Dutch cloth merchant, Pieter

de la Court, who is often cited as the individual who devised the most efficient (at the time)

method of growing pineapples in a non-tropical climate.

His method was mostly comprised of utilising hotrooms that were kept consistently warm

and humid.

These had to be carefully designed in order to vent the smoke and hot fumes out of the

structure, while keeping the weather inside, as well as the soil temperature, within very

specific ranges.

Accidentally burning down one's pineapple hotroom or killing the plants with smoke was

a very common thing in the early going.

After news of Court's ability to grow pineapples and other exotic plants and fruits year round

reached England, many nobles sent their gardeners to the Netherlands to learn his techniques

first hand at considerable expense.

If you're curious about why the Dutch had such a stranglehold on Pineapple production,

it's largely because the Dutch West India Company enjoyed an almost total monopoly on

trade in the Caribbean at the time, allowing wealthy Dutch citizens to import numerous

pineapple plants to experiment with, despite the expense.

As you can probably imagine from the many stereotypes that exist about British weather,

growing pineapples in England proved to be rather difficult and it's noted that only

exceptionally skilled or vastly wealthy gardeners were capable of such a feat.

A man called John Rose is often mistakenly attributed with growing the first pineapple

in England because of the existence of a painting commissioned by Charles II in 1675 in which

he's clearly shown presenting the king with a ripe pineapple.

As it turns out, the pineapple seen in that painting, which was based on a real encounter

the King had, was imported from the Bahamas and ripened in England by Rose.

As for the real first pineapple grown on English soil, that didn't exist until around 1714-1716

when a Dutchman called Henry Telende was able to grow one for his employer, Matthew Decker,

who subsequently had a painting commissioned in 1720 to celebrate the not unimpressive

achievement.

Telende's method of growing pineapples was quite involved, managing to maintain the perfect

soil temperature via a specially designed hothouse containing tan pits lined with pebbles

inside.

On top of the pebbles, he placed manure, then on top of that sat tanners' bark (oak bark

soaked in water).

Finally, the pot containing the pineapple plant was placed in that.

Manure by itself created too much heat in the early going, but the tanners' bark helped

regulate that and provide a more even heat over time, keeping a steady soil temperature

within the very specific range needed for growing pineapple plants.

Even after growing pineapples on English soil became a possibility, getting hold of one

was still so costly that many nobles didn't eat them, opting instead to simply display

them around their homes as one would a precious ornament or carry them around at parties.

Those who weren't quite as affluent could also rent a pineapple for a few hours at a

time.

This pineapple would be passed around from renter to renter for their respective parties

over the course of several days until finally being sold to the individual who could actually

have the right to eat it.

Because of this, even among those who'd handled pineapples, very few ever actually

experienced what it was like to eat a pineapple.

Due to the natural sweetness of the pineapple, which was described as being akin to "Wine,

Rosewater and Sugar" all mixed together, the fruit was seen as nothing short of a delicacy

by the notoriously sweet-toothed English elite living in a time when refined sugar was a

very expensive commodity.

Charles II in particular was said to love pineapple, partly due to its sweetness and

partly due to him being amused by the fact the fruit looked like it was wearing a tiny

crown; as a result, Charles II often referred to the fruit as the "King-pine".

A final reason the pineapple was so popular, at least with artists, was its unconventional,

striking appearance.

As 16th century Spanish historian Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes stated, "I

do not suppose that there is in the whole world any other of so exquisite and lovely

appearances…

My pen and my words cannot depict such exceptional qualities, nor appropriately blazon this fruit

so as to particularize the case fully and satisfactorily without the brush or the sketch."

Dunmore_PineappleIn fact, after the pineapple's introduction to England, it became a prominent

feature of art and architecture of the period, such as Scotland's now famous Dunmore Pineapple

(pictured right), commissioned in 1761 by the Earl of Dunmore.

So the next time you order a pizza and see that they casually put pineapple on it when

you clearly told them not to (because who on Earth would want to sully delectable pizza

with a sweet fruit?

;-)), remember that three centuries ago, even just having said fruit, let alone discarding

bits of it off your main dish, would have been the ultimate sign of wealth and excess.

Today, you might have heard of the tradition of presenting someone with a pineapple as

a housewarming present.

This tradition goes back to the time described in the preceding article when presenting such

a gift was seen as a magnificent gesture.

How Your Amazing Brain Tells Time: Circadian Watch, Pattern Pendulum, & Tempo Timer | Dean Buonomano - Duration: 4:35.

So human beings have been building clocks for millennium and it's been a long endeavor

of our species from sundials to hour glasses to pendulum clocks to quartz watches to car

and atomic clocks.

Yet the brain has been telling time since the dawn of animal species, right?

So even plants have the ability to tell time in terms of circadian clock.

So one of the mysteries in neuroscience that many people are studying is how the brain

tells time.

So in order to understand how the brain tells time it's useful to quickly remember how

manmade clocks work.

And there's a vast diversity of manmade clocks from pendulums to quartz watches to

atomic clocks.

And as diverse as these things are they share a common principle, an almost embarrassingly

simple principle, which is just counting the ticks of an oscillator.

So with the pendulum you just count the ticks of the pendulum going back and forth.

In the quartz watch you're just counting the mechanical vibrations of a quartz crystal.

And in the case of an atomic clock it's a bit more complicated, but they're related

to vacillatory cycle of an electromagnetic waves.

So it's reasonable to ask, "Well is that how the brain tells time?

Does the brain have some oscillator that's ticking away and some circuit that's counting

those ticks and tocks?"

The answer is no.

The brain seems to have fundamentally different ways of telling time.

So the first thing to notice is that while the mechanical clocks that we make, even your

quartz watch can tell time across a vast range of scales from tens of milliseconds to hours,

minutes and days and months and years.

So the brain has many different clocks in order to tell the milliseconds and seconds

and to tell the time of day.

So one way to think about it is the circadian clock, the clock that tells you what time

of day it is and when to arise and when to go to sleep.

That doesn't have a minute hand, much less a second hand.

In contrast the clock that tells you—the timing device in your brain that tells you,

"Hmm, this red light is taking a bit too long to turn."

"This traffic light is taking a bit long to turn" or "I think the waiter forgot

my coffee."

That clock doesn't have an hour hand much less number of days that have gone by.

So the brain has different areas, different mechanisms in order to tell time.

We don't understand, fully understand, how the brain tells you what the tempo of a song

is or when the red light is going to change.

But it doesn't seem to have to do with any oscillator-counter mechanisms.

It seems to do with neural dynamics which is the fact that patterns of neurons—neurons

are coupled to each other, neurons are connected to each other—And when you activate some

neurons that group of neurons can activate another group of neurons which can active

another group of neurons.

So you can have these evolving patterns of neural activity.

And in the same way that if you throw a pebble into a pond it can create this dynamical pattern.

And in a way that pattern tells you how much time has elapsed, right.

You know that looking at the pond if the diameter of those ripples is large, more time has elapsed

then if it's a little ripple.

So any dynamical system in principle has the ability to convey information about elapsed

time.

It can be a timer.

So as far as we know it seems that one of the mechanisms that the brain uses to tell

time on the scale of hundreds of milliseconds to seconds is through neural dynamics and

changing patterns of neural activity, neuron A activates neuron B which activates neuron

C and you have these complex evolving patterns.

So this is consistent with what we all the multiple clock principle which is the brain

doesn't have any master clock.

It has many different circuits, each specialized or that focuses on processing time on one

scale or another.

I feel about 200 times worse than any betrayal I've experienced from Kwang Soo.

Nichkhun and Gary have another ball.

[He feels betrayed again.]

I made a mistake.

Third time's a charm? New MG GS revealed - Duration: 3:02.

Third time's a charm? New MG GS revealed

You might have already forgotten – or tried to – but, just in case, MG's back! Again! And this time it's with – drumroll please – a crossover.

That's right, the long-mooted MG GS has finally been unveiled – at the new London motor show, no less.

It will join the 'new' MG range, sitting alongside the MG3 and MG6, and grant the company a potential avenue into a far more lucrative and popular sector. So what'll it come with?.

Details regarding the Toyota RAV4-sized SUV are few and far between.

All MG has confirmed so far is that the engine will be a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol, that there will be three trim levels and that top-spec versions will be offered with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. All sounds pretty reasonable.

The company proudly states that this is 'the British manufacturer's first automatic'. Presumably only if the buyers don't know about – or mentally discount – all the automatic cars the brand has produced in its previous life.

Perhaps it means first in-house automatic, or first dual-clutch unit – time will tell. Is the GS going to be expensive?.

Prices for the new MG GS will be revealed in June and are said to 'reflect the family pricing strategy'. Here's hoping that means it's cheap, and cheap enough to justify consideration among far more established rivals.

Matthew Cheyne, head of sales and marketing for MG, said: 'When we officially launch the GS next month, people will be able to find out more about the car's performance and when they can get behind the wheel of one.

In 2015, MG registered a total of 3152 cars, placing it behind Subaru (3455) and SsangYong (3344). The likes of Dacia, however, registered 26,228 cars.

McGregor - Mayweather Live | Start Time | Results

Conor McGregor, the brash U.F.C. champion, takes on undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the most anticipated boxing match in years.

The undercard is underway, but the main event is expected to begin much later. The pomp and circumstance usually means that these fights start pretty late.

Expect it to start around midnight on the East Coast. Stay here for live, round-by-round updates and analysis. Live: Second of Three Undercard Bouts Is Over. After a series of decisions, fans finally got a knockout on the undercard.

Badou Jack, a Swede by way of Gambia, took the WBA light heavyweight championship away from Welshman Nathan Cleverly with a fifth round T.K.O. after several rounds of battering.

Just one undercard match to come before the main event. When ticket prices dropped, smart fans swooped in.

Good things came to those who wait here in the T-Mobile Arena. A couple from Texas sitting in the first row of the bleacher seats snagged their tickets this morning for $1,500.

Face value is $5,000. They had been monitoring the prices all week and got them today when they dropped.

Yes, it's still expensive, but who wouldn't want to save $3,500? How Conor McGregor will win. Almost every fight expert — mixed martial artists included — thinks that Mayweather, 49-0 and arguably the best defensive fighter, should handle McGregor.

But, as they say, where there's a fist there's a chance. For McGregor, he has to make it a barroom brawl.

He comes from a sport where you wrestle and kick and elbow and choke. While he can't do those things here tonight, he can try to flick an elbow inside, and do some grabbing and pushing.

He is bigger — maybe by as much as 20 pounds on fight night — than Mayweather, and he has to use that. He also has to use his longer reach to keep Mayweather at distance.

How Floyd Mayweather will win. For Mayweather, the key really is to just be Mayweather.

But he has vowed to make this an exciting fight and said he would knock out McGregor. So you might expect to see him coming forward and fighting on the inside more than usual.

And the inside might actually be the safest place for him to be. It might seem counterintuitive for Mayweather to stay close, but one thing that McGregor does not have experience in doing during mixed martial artsfights is shortening his punches.

That's what Mayweather, and most boxers, can do with ease. So expect Mayweather to land the much better shots on McGregor from close in.

And being close has one other advantage for Mayweather. It keeps McGregor from being able to line up a home run shot at distance. And a shot like that is really McGregor's best hope. Money never swung back to Mayweather.

It's Las Vegas after all, so let's talk gambling. When this fight was first proposed, Mayweather was made a huge favorite, 10-1 or more. But then people started betting. And almost all of them wanted to bet on McGregor.

Maybe it was his popularity. Maybe they just found the prospect of betting a little to make a lot more appetizing than the opposite.

The odds fell until Mayweather was a mere 4-1 or 5-1 favorite. Given that just about every expert thought the fight was a mismatch, this seemed low.

Bettors are sometimes divided into "sharps," knowledgeable players who often bet big, and "squares," tourists looking for a fun smaller bet. The expectation was that when fight day neared, the sharps would show up to bet on Mayweather.

But not enough to really move the odds much. The squares still poured it in on McGregor. Now bookmakers are saying that so much money has been bet on McGregor that if he wins they will be taking some serious losses.

Will the fight be an epic mismatch? There are those who say that Conor McGregor, a 5-1 underdog with the bookies, should be more like 100-1 or 1,000-1. If this is so, the bout will probably be ugly early.

Watch to see if McGregor lands any blows at all in the first round or two. Mayweather is a dazzling defensive fighter, and the phrase "He couldn't lay a glove on him" may never be more appropriate.

It will be interesting to see how big McGregor looks tonight compared to Mayweather.

At the weigh-in yesterday, McGregor checked in at 153 pounds and said that by fight time he would be "close to 170." Mayweather was a comparatively trim 149½, and based on history would not be expected to bulk up to anything like McGregor's weight.

Mixed martial artists, like wrestlers, make a habit of cutting weight to make the lowest possible weight class, then pile on the pounds before the fight. Boxers tend to walk around closer to the weights they fight at.

Is it a fight or a spectacle? Billboards for the fight are everywhere in Las Vegas. The contest is Topic 1 at the poker tables and sports books.

Publications not known for their fistic coverage, like The Atlantic and The New Yorker are weighing in. There will be a lot of big names at ringside.

Is this going to be more like Evel Knievel jumping Snake River Canyon or Bobby Riggs-Billy Jean King than a boxing match? The great boxing writer Pierce Egan wrote in 1820: "Drummers and boxers to acquire excellence must begin young.

There is a peculiar nimbleness of wrist and exercise of the shoulder required, that is only obtained from growth and practice." Egan must be rolling about in his grave this evening.

McGregor, while certainly a fighter, is a boxer for the first time tonight at age 29. And the thing is, it is not a minor league tryout.

Millions will pay a hundred bucks to see him debut against the undefeated Mayweather, and the ringside spectators are paying as much as $10,000. No word on whether the Rolling Stones or Metallica are soon to try out novice drummers.

How much money are they going to make? Mayweather is guaranteed $100 million and McGregor $30 million, according to Nevada State Athletic Commission figures reported by ESPN. But that's the minimum payout.

Both men will get a share of the profits, which should be significant. Figure on more than $200 million for Mayweather and more than $100 million for McGregor.

How about the ref? In a fight between a master boxer and a novice who usually kicks and takes down opponents, it seems like a competent referee is crucial. The man in the middle tonight will be Robert Byrd.

Byrd, a veteran, reffed for Mayweather once before, in 2013 for a victory over Robert Guerrero. Needless to say, he has not reffed any McGregor boxing matches, as there have not been any.

Several boxing analysts in recent days have written that Byrd has a tendency to let them fight, rather than intervene repeatedly. I would say history indicates he's more lenient toward a physical fight.

Steve Farhood, a Showtime boxing analysts told The New York Post. It remains to be seen which fighter that would favor.

Can Mayweather deliver a knockout punch? Mayweather has beaten boxing's best, but he has knocked out exactly one fighter since 2008, and that man, Victor Ortiz, wasn't ready for the blow because he was reaching out to hug Mayweather (It's a long story.) The same people who predict an easy Mayweather victory are mostly saying it will be by knockout.

But even against an inexperienced boxer, the 40-year-old Mayweather may not have the power in his punch to end it early. Can McGregor even box? A man with no professional bouts is the headliner of one of the biggest fights in decades.

Footage of McGregor sparring has been met with critiques from boxing purists about his arm carriage, his stance, and other supposed problems.

(Of course sparring footage release to the public is very likely to be misleading.) The first few rounds, if it goes that far, will tell us if McGregor is a competent pugilist, or an embarrassment.

Is someone (McGregor) going to get seriously hurt? The Association of Ringside Physicians believes that the bout is such a mismatch that McGregor may get seriously hurt. The eight-ounce gloves selected for the match will allow harder hitting.

No one wants to see serious injury in any sporting event. But at least some longtime observers fear it could happen tonight.
