Thiem ouduels American Fritz - US Open 2017

On a day in which the 19-year-old Andrey Rublev dispatched No. 7 Grigor Dmitrov, and less than 24 hours removed from 18-year-old Denis Shapovalovs blitzkreig of No.

8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, American Taylor Fritz was bidding to become the latest teen to take down a Top 10 seed.

For two-and-a-half sets, it didnt look like it was to be: Dominic Thiem, the sixth seed from Austria, was cruising to a workmanlike, straight-sets victory.

Yet late in the afternoon at the end of the third set, the lanky, 6-foot-4 Fritz - who had never advanced beyond the first round of a major before this years Open - suddenly found his groove.

And the match grew unexpectedly complicated for Thiem. Employing hard, flat groundstrokes and a big serve, Fritz snatched the aforementioned third stanza. In the fourth, he arrived at three set points on Thiems serve.

Finding his equiliibrium, the Austrian gamely fought his way out of a 0-40 hole to even the set at 5-5. Thiem proceeded to break Fritzs serve with an emphatic inside-out forehand winner to take a 6-5 lead.

The sixth seed restored order by serving out the match, escaping with a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win. I was a little bit lucky to save three set points there in the fourth set, Thiem admitted.

Having been bullied around the court by Thiems brawny groundstrokes for much of the afternoon, the Californian Fritz suddenly began to return the favor. He acquitted himself well with hard, flat strokes that pushed the Austrian virtually to his limit.

Fritz capitalized on just two of 11 break points for the match, an indicator of the missed opportunities that separate the expected and the upsets New York crowds eat up early on in the tournament.

WHAT IT MEANS: Thiem, who entered the Top 10 last year, has reached two career Slam semifinals, both at Roland Garros.

He has yet to advance as far on grass and hard court majors, even though he has won professional titles on three different surfaces.

Fritz, who married and had a child within the last year, had climbed to a ranking of No. This year he has dropped out of the Top 100.

The American teen lost his first six matches at majors, until securing a first-round victory in Flushing Meadows over Marcos Baghdatis.

MATCH POINT: Thiem advances to meet Adriano Mannarino, the No. 30 seed from France. The Austrian has yet to advance beyond the fourth round at any major outside Paris. Is this the year for him to do it?.

Effects from tropical storm Harvey are starting to hit home here in Michigan.

Officials say gas prices across the country have increased by at least 10 cents since

Harvey came ashore and caused record flooding in places.

According to AAA, U.S. gasoline prices Thursday averaged $2.45 per gallon, which is 10 cents

higher than a week ago and 5 cents more than on Wednesday.

In Texas, the average price at the pump statewide is $2.26 per gallon.

That's 12 cents higher than a week ago, before Harvey made landfall, and 4 cents higher

than on Wednesday.

Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast last Friday and lingered in the region for

days, causing catastrophic flooding and causing major disruption to the region's energy

sector.

Russia warns new US sanctions against North Korea may prove DANGEROUS amid WW3 fears - Duration: 4:20.

Russia warns new US sanctions against North Korea may prove DANGEROUS amid WW3 fears

Kim Jong-un's aggression has sparked World War 3 fears but Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov cautioned the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson against imposing fresh sanctions or pursuing military action against the rogue state.

During a telephone conversation on Wednesday with Mr Tillerson, the Russian official stressed that imposing more sanctions to pressure Pyongyang to end its missile program was counterproductive and dangerous".

Mr Lavrov also warned US military action against the rogue regime could cause unpredictable consequences". The Russian foreign minister's comments come after . .

President Trump later tweeted that the time for talking with North Korea was over following an earlier threat to retaliate with "fire and fury".

He said: "The US has been talking to North Korea, and paying them extortion money, for 25 years. Talking is not the answer!" Russia has previously criticised the US for using the same warmongering threats as North Korea.

Speaking about the escalated tensions, Maria Zakharova, from the Russian foreign ministry, said: "We [the ministry] have repeatedly said that the situation is on edge.

"But despite this, we hear both the rhetoric of Pyongyang and the statements coming every day from Washington. "The paradox is that they are identical.

It is an open threat of use of force from both sides." She added that if war breaks out, it will be a collapse on the global scale with complete violation of international law".

Russia has been one of North Korea's very few allies since the Cold War and the nations shares a narrow border near the port town of Vladivostok.

Ms Zakharova continued: "If people in 2017 do not understand what the threat of nuclear weapons is, that it is a threat to the entire world, then what are we talking about? Mr Lavrov's comments come after North Korea launched an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan.

Just days before the rogue had fired three missiles towards the Sea of Japan, which either failed in flight or exploded almost immediately.

Kim Jong-un's regime has previously threatened to launch four IRBMs towards the US territory Guam – but the dictator has so far held off on giving the final order.

Earlier this week the US tested its missile defence system in Hawaii as it shot down a medium-range rocket, similar to those used by North Korea.

Missile Defence Agency director Lt Gen Sam Greaves said: "We are working closely with the fleet to develop this important new capability, and this was a key milestone in giving our Aegis BMD ships an enhanced capability to defeat ballistic missiles in their terminal phase.

"We will continue developing ballistic missile defence technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolves.".

lock the gate is one of many environmental activist groups that

qualify for charity tax status which means donors can claim their donations

as tax deductions we believe in the principle that those donations that

people are making is for the public good you know we are acting in the public

Accessibility at VidCon (U.S.) 2017 [CC] - Duration: 8:56.

Hello, hello!

Today I want to talk about accessibility at VidCon 2017.

First, I'm afraid I must reiterate a point I made last year about the importance of

visible signage.

Last year I and many others had tremendous difficulty finding the accessible entrance

to register and this year I was told it was just as difficult.

It's rather hidden if you don't know what you are looking for and staff was not helpful

in pointing it out, in fact, they've directed wheelchair users to a staircase... (chortles)

...Unsure of where the accessible entrance was and point it out as the only entrance possible.

I don't know why they... would do that. (sigh)

So come on, VidCon!

Make some signs, inform staff members and security.

It's an easy fix.

Compared to last year, there were properly labeled foods, but there were also places

where they weren't or could be easily confusing if the cards were switched around.

Um...

And this is vital, if someone has an allergy this kind of error could cause a reaction or worse

a fatality.

Aside from proper labeling there should be more accommodating options for food for different

dietary restrictions, that means vegan options, lactose-free, gluten-free.

Um...

And while I know many people think those kinds of requests are some fad and unnecessary but (coughs)

... for some people those are actual allergies and they need to be taken seriously.

This year VidCon had up to, I believe, 15 ASL interpreters on call and that is really amazing!

I also heard that they released an email to guests, um, so that they could request an interpreter.

That kind of communication with disabled guests is so necessary and I hope it won't stop

there, I really hope that at a disability registration at the event the staff is well

informed and has conversations with the disabled guests about their concerns with accessibility

because that it the way that they're gonna improve.

I didn't see it for myself but was told that this year there was actually a disability/accessibility

table at registration and I'm really glad that's a thing that's happening!

So VidCon puts on these movies screenings, um, it's an online video convention, so now

that I think about it, they play a few things on on the big screens throughout the day.

A friend of mine who is Deaf decided to attend the event but there were no captions and when

they asked about if captions being turned on, they were told by staff to find an interpreter

to interpret the film.

Uh.. no.

That's not how that works for SO many reasons.

Videos and films at the convention NEED captions so that all guests find whatever is on that big screen accessible.

This was also a matter of disability etiquette which brings me to my next point, disabled

priority seating.

Last year was my first year at VidCon and

I was pretty disappointed at the lack of accessible/disabled priority seating,

which left wheelchair users either in the far back or floating in the aisles, yikes,

but it was rectified this year with marked disabled priority seating and open spaces

at the ends of rows for wheelchair users!

Now for the not so great part, my friends, one with Spina Bifida and the other who has

EDS and is Hard of Hearing, they were sitting in the designated area when a security guard

came up to them and told them...

Andrea: ...and I'm sitting in the disabled seating section and a security guard came up to me

and said, "This is disabled seating."

I responded saying, "I know, I'm disabled."

and he looked at me and went, "No, you're not."

(record scratch) Annie: NO.

Whoah. No.

That is such an inappropriate thing to say… what does that even mean?

What does disability look like?

Anyway, I do understand where the guard was coming from, the intention was to reserve

a limited resource for the people that needed them, but in doing so, harassed the very people

he was trying to stand up for, so again, I must persist that the staff need a briefing

on things like this.

People with non-apparent disabilities are still disabled, my friends needed to be seated in

those seats to get a clear view of the ASL interpreter and CART, people who are

blind/visually impaired benefit from sitting up close, those with mobility disabilities

also need those seats in case people stand up and they still need to sit, they'd be

able to without missing anything, also with the space they have in the front rows,

they can easily get in and out for breaks if that's something that they need to do.

None of these disabilities are ones you'd be able to tell just by visual evidence, and...

I don't know what kind of difference you are expecting when you say, "You don't look

disabled."

A possible solution might be a card, badge, or even a ribbon that attaches to our VidCon

badges, um, that alert security and staff of accessibility needs.

Let me know what you think!

There needs to be more awareness and education regarding visible and non visible disabilities

and what their access needs are.

There needs to be proper training for staff and security so these kind of things don't

happen in the future.

Another thing that I'm not sure...

cuz I was backstage a lot...

um... happened throughout the event is the availability of quiet spaces or quiet rooms.

Um, personally, as a person who has um, some sensory processing issues and anxiety issues,

I...

could not spend a lot of time um, in the front of house, right, in the main areas

because it was far too overwhelming, too much stimuli.

In order to be there, I had to kind of find my own hiding spots backstage where I could have some quiet.

Quiet spaces are so needed for people with sensory processing issues, for people with anxiety,

um, and just...

Plain old anyone who just might need a moment to...

Exhale. To breathe.

Um... so...

I'm not sure if there were designated quiet spaces at the event...

but if they weren't I hope they'll be included next time!

While I am positive there are accessibility issues that I may have missed in this video,

I hope that anyone with concerns alerts VidCon via their survey

or makes contact with them some other way

and then VidCon can make the appropriate changes for a more accessible and inclusive event/convention

where all guests feel equal and valid in the space and not like their disability will cause

them to be excluded throughout the event…

and I will see you eventually, bye!

Forest Conversations Ch 1 - This is Us - Duration: 7:41.

(light guitar music)

(light upbeat music)

- [Melody] What happens when your life

falls completely apart, but you can't fall apart

because you're the one left holding everything together?

- [Marq] What if you worked hard building

a fairy tale life with blood, sweat, and tears,

and overnight it was gone,

and a life you didn't recognize took its place.

- [Melody] Maybe there's something in our story

that will help you through your story.

We are telling it for the first time,

not only to you, but to each other.

- [Marq] Fourteen years into our marriage,

I had an accident and sustained a traumatic brain injury.

I turned into a completely different person.

It took years of recovery, and over those years

we lost everything we'd built,

but we found things we never could have found otherwise.

- [Melody] This is a rough story.

It's the story of a family.

It's the story of a marriage.

It's the story of two people who had to figure out

how to make it on their own so they could find

the strength to bring it all back together.

- [Marq] We went to the forest to make these videos

because it was time to talk to each other

about what had happened and about what it did to us,

because once the hell was over-

- [Melody] We just moved on and we never talked about it,

believe it or not.

It was just too painful.

So we set up our camera phones in the forest,

and just talked, and we talked,

and we talked, and we talked.

- [Marq] We're bringing them to you

because we made it through that hell,

and we want you to know that you can too.

- [Melody] We hope you tune in, because sometimes,

when you're at the end of your rope,

someone might just throw you one,

and we want to throw you a rope.

- [Marq] We are Marq and Melody Ross,

and this is The Forest Conversations.

(light upbeat music)

- So I just want you to talk a little bit

about where you came from and your,

like if you and me were just meeting.

- You want me to tell you, or do you want me to tell them?

- You can tell them.

- My background is the grandfather and grandmother I knew

on my dad's side came from families of hard-working farmers.

My grandad had some different businesses

as well as ranching and farming.

But I grew up right next door

to my grandfather and grandmother.

I loved the farming life, so that's kind of

what I did growing up, along with, well,

like all kids do, a lot of playing.

But hard work was definitely ingrained in us.

I loved being around equipment, running equipment,

being out in the dirt and those types of things.

Some background with cattle and ranching some from them.

So I would consider myself kind of very salt of the earth,

do whatever it takes, use what you have around you

and what's available, and find joy in that.

- What were you like as a little kid?

- [Marq] How little?

- [Melody] Like five.

- I played with a lot of girls and Barbie Dolls

when I was five.

There were really no boys where we lived.

So yeah, I did that.

But I think that helped me have a feeling side

for women and girls, and trying to understand them

a little better, even though it was

my sisters and their friends.

But then I had a sandbox and played trucks.

Dad had set me up a basketball hoop,

and so I'd go out and play basketball

out in the back on the dirt.

There was no concrete, no blacktop, none of that.

I loved playing.

Learned to ride a bike.

Tried to be Evel Knievel.

I would set up the Tonka trucks from-

- Who's Evel Knievel?

- The first and most well known motorcycle stunt man.

Let's call him that.

- A daredevil?

- Very much a daredevil.

- I think you did become Evel Knievel.

- Whatever.

- You go by Pompy now as your grandpa name.

- Yes.

- And that is after your Pompy, right?

- That's right.

My grandad, my dad's dad, his first grandchild

was my older sister.

She couldn't say Grandpa.

It came out Pompy.

So he forever was known as Pompy.

He passed away just before we had our first grandchild,

and I wanted to keep that as a tradition, and as a memory,

and as an honor to him to still have a Pompy.

So that's me to our grandkids.

I am Pompy.

- I came from a big family, nine kids.

I was the sixth.

My parents are both musicians.

My dad was an electrician by trade,

but he was also an amazing singer and a guitar player.

I think he played some other instruments.

What's funny is there's nine kids, and I got named Melody,

because everybody's really into music,

but I chose a different path because I was rebellious.

I was just kind of the wild kid in the family.

I always just was a free spirit.

Just growing up, I just always figured out a way

to do everything I wanted to do.

Even though we didn't have very much money

and there were so many kids,

I just figured out from a young age,

you can find things, even just junk on the street,

you can make stuff out of things.

You can rig things up, kind of like we just did with this.

If you guys could see our tripod,

we just stacked up a bunch of rocks

because we decided to do this while we were up here

and we don't have the right equipment.

But always just figured out a way

to make what I wanted to make and to do what I wanted to do,

and that has really served me well.

My grandparents also were farmers.

I think that's one of the things that kind of

sort of drew us to each other, I think,

is we both grew up in Idaho,

and hard-working people who loved the land,

and loved the outdoors, and loved to work.

- She says that, but it was my hotness that got her.

- Yeah, it was your hotness.

- It was the hair back when I had it.

- Yeah, the mullet.

- I didn't have a mullet, not when you met me.

I did have a mullet before that.

- [Melody] Yeah, so we should talk about that.

How did we meet?

(light guitar music)

Longest women's match in US Open history ends in heartbreak for Daria Gavrilova - Duration: 4:09.

Longest women's match in US Open history ends in heartbreak for Daria Gavrilova

Daria Gavrilova has suffered US Open heartbreak, losing the longest women's match in history at Flushing Meadows, a three-hour, 33-minute epic.

The 25th seed fought off four match points before succumbing 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) to big-hitting American Shelby Rogers in their gruelling second-round contest.

Gavrilova showcased her signature fighting spirit in a high-quality and rollercoaster encounter featuring 11 service breaks, 76 winners, 111 unforced errors , a 90-minute deciding set and a warm embrace between the two exhausted combatants at the net.

Riding high after claiming her maiden WTA Tour title in New Haven on Sunday, Gavrilova had been enjoying a six-match winning streak heading into the clash.

But it was clear from the outset she would have her hands full against the 2016 French Open quarter-finalist. Three times Gavrilova fought back from a break down to force the first-set tiebreaker.

She successfully challenged a line call to save one set point but eventually relented to Rogers' unyielding power play to drop the opening set after 68 minutes.

Australia's 25th seed again had to come from behind in the second set, going down an early break to trail 2-0 before levelling up to stay in the contest.

On the brink of defeat, Gavrilova saved break point with a brave second-serve ace down the middle to avoid going down 5-3 and giving Rogers the chance to serve out the match.

Perhaps rattled, the American double-faulted and then pulled a backhand wide to instead gift Gavrilova the chance to close out the set, which she calmly did to tie the match up.

Gavrilova led 4-2 in the decider and had two break-point chances to go up 5-2.

In a big turning point, she couldn't convert and the 2010 US Open junior champion needed to courageously battle back from love-40 down serving at 4-5 to stay alive.

Gavrilova staved off one more match point in the topsy-turvy tiebreaker before finally submitting. The defeat leaves Ashleigh Barty as Australia's last hope in the women's singles event in New York.

She plays American Sloane Stephens on Saturday morning (AEST) for a place in the fourth round. In the men's draw, John Millman continued his blazing run to charge into the third round and earn himself the opportunity of a lifetime.

Australia's last man standing backed up his upset defeat of Nick Kyrgios with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 dismissal of Tunisia's Malek Jaziri to make the last 32 in New York for the first time.

Millman next plays either German Philipp Kohlschreiber or Colombian Santiago Giraldo – both unseeded – for a $US144,000 ($A181,080) pay day and coveted spot in the second week of the season's final grand slam event.

[Breaking News] Storm Irma : Will it affect the US? - Duration: 1:53.

Irma may become major hurricane while tracking across Atlantic; Will it affect the US?

While the Gulf Coast continues to deal with the devastating impacts of Harvey, emergency

managers in the United States have another tropical threat to monitor by the name of

Irma.

Far across the Atlantic, just west of the Cabo Verde Islands, Irma has strengthened

into a Category 2 hurricane as of Thursday midday.

Irma became a tropical storm at midday on Wednesday.

"There is the potential for Irma to ramp up to a powerful hurricane in the coming days,"

according to AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski.

"Irma is likely to become a major hurricane well before it reaches the Lesser Anteilles,"

Kottlowski said.

Irma will take about a week for the system to make its trek westward across the Atlantic

Ocean.

Meteorologists will likely be tracking this storm through the middle of September.

"All interests in the eastern Caribbean will need to monitor the progress of this evolving

and likely dangerous tropical cyclone," Kottlowski said.

"It is way too soon to say with certainty where and if this system will impact the U.S."

During this time, plenty of atmospheric factors will come into play to determine its path.

Possibilities range from a landfall on the Leeward Islands in the northeastern Caribbean

to the Carolinas and the island nation of Bermuda - and everything in between.

"Steering winds will guide Irma close to the Leeward Islands and then perhaps Puerto

Rico and Hispaniola around the middle of next week," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist

Brian Thompson.

Conditions are favorable for tropical development throughout the central Atlantic, heightening

the threat of significant strengthening as this system approaches the U.S.

[Breaking News] North Korea tourism: US travel ban takes effect - BBC NEWS - Duration: 4:02.

North Korea tourism: US travel ban takes effect.

A US ban on its citizens travelling to North Korea has come into effect, at a time of heightened

tensions over North Korean missile launches.

The new rule was announced after US student Otto Warmbier died after being released from

prison in North Korea.

The State Department said it was necessary "due to the serious and mounting risk" of

detention.

Any US citizen breaking the rules may face criminal penalties and have their passports

revoked.

The State Department would only grant permission to US citizens to go to North Korea "under

very limited circumstances", such as for journalism or humanitarian work.

Tour operators have suggested that up to 1,000 Americans visit North Korea every year, making

up about a fifth of Western tourists.

The vast majority of visitors are Chinese.

On Thursday, tour operators flew out their last American tourists from Pyongyang.

Simon Cockerell, general manager of Koryo Tours, told the BBC's Newsday programme that

he expected to see fewer customers overall from now on.

"[Although] the US travel ban only affects Americans, of course it sends out a message

from the US that they believe strongly that people shouldn't visit," he said.

Recent detentions of US citizens have caused "a downward push in bookings" as "that's the

thing that concerns people the most, that they may personally get into trouble".

Otto Warmbier was arrested and jailed in 2016 after Pyongyang accused him of attempting

to take a propaganda sign from a hotel while on holiday.

He was released to his family in the US in June, but he was in a coma and died shortly

afterwards without regaining consciousness.

The cause of his death remains unclear.

The State Department said at least 16 citizens had been detained in North Korea in the past

decade.

Three are known to be in detention.

Most of those detained have been US missionaries, journalists and professors.

The US has in the past accused North Korea of detaining its citizens to use them as pawns

in negotiations over its nuclear weapons programme.

Tourism offers outside visitors a rare window into North Korean life, but tour groups are

heavily regulated as well as monitored.

It is also a lucrative source of income, with one estimate that it nets authorities up to

$43.6m (£34m) a year.

The State Department said in its latest statement that anyone visiting North Korea "should have

no expectation of privacy", with all electronic devices subject to searches and authorities

able to monitor mobile phone calls.

It also warned that it was "entirely possible" that tourism money was being used to fund

North Korea's nuclear programmes.

'Severely impacted'.

The new rules also affect US citizens living and working in North Korea, such as aid workers

and teachers.

About 60 US citizens who were employees or family members of employees at North Korea's

Pyongyang University of Science and Technology have departed, according to Reuters.

The wire news agency said they were unable to receive special permission to stay, despite

attempts by the university to lobby the US government for exemptions.

It quoted an unnamed source saying the school was "severely impacted" by the US travel ban

as well as the "decision of some other personnel not to return."

The ban comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries and in the region.

This week North Korea reiterated its threat to launch a missile strike on the US Pacific

island of Guam, and conducted what it called its "first step" of wider military operations

in the Pacific by firing a missile over Japan.

US President Donald Trump had recently vowed to rain "fire and fury" on North Korea in

response to its threats, and warned that the US military is "locked and loaded".

How our members see us | Comment nos membres nous perçoivent - Duration: 3:05.

What I love about ACFO is the fact that we're professional.

Our members are professional and I really admire the fact that our Association is also

professional.

For me, ACFO is a professional union because, in its approach, they use a different approach

than other unions which is closer to my values and ethics.

It didn't matter what the type of question was, whether it was a complex one, or something

that was very minor, or if it was a question that has been repeatedly asked, I found ACFO

was always upfront and ready and willing and able to assist.

Just know that you're going to be treated professionally, it's going to be a very

professional experience, and don't be afraid, because they're there for us, and they're

there to help us.

We're accountants, not lawyers, we're not trained for that.

We may have our own interpretation, but, at the end of the day, if it's the first time

we're faced with an issue, the advisors, for their part, may have handled it 50 times

in the last year.

They already know the answer, and they have already said, 'yes, that's the solution'

because they were able to document it.

They never ask you to reveal anything that you're not comfortable with and they would

never betray your confidence.

I know this throughout my dealings with ACFO.

Yes, I would highly recommend contacting ACFO in order to get exactly the right information.

If, by chance, they don't know the answer, they will research it for us, and then, they

will report the results.

I think don't be shy and be trustworthy, because ACFO is there to help and they're

very professional, and they're very caring too.

Absolutely I recommend that all my coworkers contact ACFO as soon as possible when they

feel uncomfortable.

They certainly may come and see me, ask for my view and I'm happy to talk about it with

them.

But, when it comes to more technical issues, they should not hesitate to contact ACFO.

And I've seen that every single individual that's a part of this team has always been

dedicated towards achieving that goal that they're striving for.

Hence, I think that everyone on the team has been very dedicated towards what they do and

they like what they do.

They're there, they're in your corner, and they really do mean it when they say,

'we've got your back, and we're there to support you, and we will help you from

beginning to end.'

They give unions a good name.
