Lawless Jakarta: The Slowly Changing Perspective, The Stigma and A Bit of History - Duration: 3:54.

How is the growth of tattoo culture in Indonesia?

Indonesia's tattoo culture slowly changing into a pop culture nowadays compared to the one in the past,

in new order era.

Young people starts to make tattoo in exposed area such as hands, forearms, neck, or even in the face.

In the past, most people make tattoo in hidden area because they can be considered as a criminal,

or being judged negatively by society. Their image is bad.

For people my age, the challenge is not being judged as a person who against the government,

but more of the negative stigma from the society.

That's how I experienced back then, because the negative stigma is very strong.

For people in 70's or 80's, it's true that their challenge is being judged as a person that against the government.

Because in that period, people with tattoo can be gunned by the officials.

But do you think that the stigma of tattoo in our society nowadays is gradually changing or still the same?

For most of the Indonesians, the stigma is still the same.

Because the stigma is well grown by the new order government and product of the media too.

I can say that it is a product of the media because in television, in criminal show, if there's a person

being caught for doing crimes and they are told to undress, they will exposed the tattoo.

Like literally a close up shot on the tattoo.

So, people will indirectly judge a person with tattoo is a criminal.

Back then, the government was actually hunting a person with rose tattoo.

There was a member of a family who was robbed and killed, and this family affiliated with the government,

so there was an instruction to kill anyone with a rose tattoo in their body.

But then, over the time, everyone with tattoo is being killed.

How about the facts, are people with tattoo identical or closer to negative or underground things?

Negative? First, you can't assume that underground things are the same with negative things.

I mean, when you talked about underground, there also a lot of positive things born from the underground.

For example, hardcore. There is a negative and positive hardcore.

Positive hardcore, there is this subculture named 'straight edge'.

'Straight edge', they don't do drugs, don't eat meat, don't drinks, mostly vegan.

There is a movement called 'Food Not Bombs'. They distribute foods for the homeless,

they also born from the underground.
