I think back to San Diego Comic-Con when we were doing a panel and we were just setting up,
and you know that monk chanting started.
The audience just went nuts.
Sitting at the panel thinking like, "Yeah wow, we've got some really icon music on our hands."
That music was very very key to a lot of the emotion of the game, and a lot of peoples memories of the game.
You see a still from it and you hear the music, or you hear the music and you see yourself playing the game back in that day.
I didn't want to lose sight of that. I wanted the music to speak for itself and just…
…give it the red carpet love letter and bring all the resources that we could bear to bringing it back.
I really wanted to take what I had learned on Legends and to work with a partner that I had just had great success with in Pyramind and Paul Lipson.
I started formulating my plan of how to approach it. Halo is really near and dear to my heart.
Shipping the original audio as it was, when they were doing so much work on remastering the visuals, wasn't going to cut it.
And this was the challenge. We wanted to maintain our reverence and DNA of the original score, but we did need to extend.
What we wanted to do was enhance what was there and bring it to life with modern production techniques and vast increased resources over the original.
A lot of choices out there but I was proponent of Skywalker. They have tailored everything to the pursuit of capturing an orchestra.
Skywalker is a great place to record, first of all because we have a fantastic staff,
but also the room is a wonderful-sounding room that can be tuned to accommodate any kind of music.
To me it just represents the absolute state of the art, and it's a perfect partnership for Halo Anniversary.
If you like the way music is spotted in the original at a particular point, it's going to be the exact same piece,
it's just going to be done with a 75-piece orchestra at Skywalker Sound.
The guys did a great job on re-orchestrating the original work.
There was no pre-existing MIDI audio files to work with, and all we had was literally the original in-game file.
We had to meticulously listen and transcribe every note.
You're starting from something that's already finished.
And something that's iconic. Something that's beloved.
There's a lot of things that are exact, and there's a lot of things that are adaptations in the spirit of the original.
Sythesis was all done on gear that was available in 2000/2001.
We actually have a couple of guys on the team who are encyclopaedic in their knowledge of old gear.
They've been able to go back in, listen to what's there, find the exact synth, the exact patch, tune it to exactly how it sounds and then re-perform if for this.
The power of an orchestra and the way scores are being composed now has really raised the level of expectation,
because it's much more of a real tangible, visceral experience than it was in the past.
At the heart of the music and at the heart of the story is Marty O'Donnell's original creation and it's very respectful of that but yet it still sounds new.
You do have the option in the menu to just play the game to that original soundtrack,
so if you do want to hear that music exactly the same as it was ten years ago you can still do that.
We've got fans making this music, which means that when we are adapting this music
we're doing it from the standpoint of we play it and we've been playing if for years,
and we're just going to apply our sensibility as both a fan and as artists.

or even at a venue, even at an event, I can hear the music just fine
But once I start moving and there's
all this motion and my equilibrium is changed,
my perception of sound changes with that,
and suddenly it becomes muffled.
And other times it sounds like complete silence.
Hi, my name is Jacob Lyons. I'm also known as Kujo, or Krazy Kujo,
in the b-boy world and on social media.
I was born completely deaf in my right ear with sensorineural hearing loss, so the auditory nerve is dead.
From a young age, I began to have ear infections and then a couple of accidents here and there
which caused me to gradually lose hearing in my left ear.
People thought I was an idiot, because with hearing loss comes speech impediments, and I had multiple
one of which was a stutter, another which was just not being able to pronounce certain sounds very well. <i><b><u><font color=#00000000></font></u></b></i>
Kids are very quick to humiliate
anyone that they can, really,
especially when there's a group of them and they're all on the same page and you're alone.
It's really easy to get bullied,
so that happened to me a lot as a kid.
I started dancing at the age of 15, which is now 25 years ago.
And I went to this school wearing my get-up
and noticed across the way,
a bunch of other kids wearing pretty much the exact same clothes
and they noticed me
and I just sort of assumed that I was in trouble, I was about to get jumped.
Instead of hitting me up and asking me where I was from, they asked me if I danced.
And that was a big surprise and I said I don't, but I would like to learn.
Getting into dance gave me a much more constructive outlet for that energy, for that rage.
So I could just put
what I wanted to express into movement, you know,
and that was really invigorating and
quite literally a lifesaver.
So for breaking, it's literally life itself.
You're surrounded by your peers, by your community.
So it's got that ancient earthy rooted sense of
just being in harmony with everyone around you,
with the earth, with the universe and all of that at once.
When I go into something like
contemporary or modern dance,
then I feel like that echoes the sense of silence and freedom
and existentialism and nihilism that I've come to embrace in my own inner world when I'm breaking. <i><b><u><font color=#00000000></font></u></b></i>
The first problem that I ran into when I started to learn to dance in high school was <i><b><u><font color=#00000000></font></u></b></i>
that I just couldn't hear the music, in the same way that everyone else did.
So...
I was accused of not being able to dance.
I had not publicly spoken about my deafness amongst the community, even here in LA,
so a lot of people that I'd known for years, even decades, did not know that I couldn't hear
because I just didn't tell anyone. I didn't want to.
I would almost have rather them think that I'm kind of dumb or I'm kind of crazy
than to reveal that, "oh, I just can't hear."
I invent my own context, I invent my own structure,
I invent my own beat.
To this day, I still don't know if I'm going to be able to hear the music when it's my turn to dance.
And I don't know if I'm going to do anything on beat or if I'm gonna just get lost in my own world again
and fumble around and hope I do something cool,
or what. Yeah, neverending.
That process is so important to me too, because it's an adventure every time.
