One moment, you're driving down the road, you're doing everything right, you're driving

the speed limit, and then suddenly another driver causes a collision.

Immediately, your adrenaline kicks in, you may be in shock, confused, or injured.

There are over 35,000 vehicular collisions every year in Oregon.

What should you do if you're involved in one of these?

First, if anyone is severely injured, call 911 and make sure that an ambulance is dispatched

to the scene immediately.

Second, call the police.

An officer will respond and can interview the drivers, interview any known witnesses,

and record the location of any physical evidence, and the location of the vehicles.

Personal injury claims are fault-based.

This means that you have to prove that the other driver was at fault.

A police investigation is a good first step toward proving that fault.

Third, identify any witnesses who may have seen the collision.

Get their names, get their phone numbers, and ask that they stay at the scene until

the police arrive.

Fourth, exchange insurance information with the other driver.

Also try to get their name, driver's license number, and license plate number.

Fifth, if possible, take photographs of the scene and the vehicles.

And finally, sixth, if you're injured, seek appropriate medical care as soon as possible

after the police investigation is concluded.

For most people, being seriously injured due to someone else's fault is a traumatic, once-in-a-lifetime
