Why Did I Wait So Long!? | 91. Road Warrior Life | Full Time RV Living - Duration: 14:12.

Last time on Road warrior we took in the beautiful scenery at our campground

[Kado] got hooked on a video game

And we were excited to take our first ride together on our new toy

We decided to hit up the Skyway bridge [and] head on over [to] St.. Pete

What a beautiful

And truly epic ride that everyone should experience on a motorcycle [it] felt like you're on top [of] the world

We were so stoked on our new motorcycle and spent the whole day exploring. We saw Kite Surfers

We saw people boondocking in their RVS right on the water and we took the back roads

And we came home that evening there was ten raccoons all having a good time in our front yard. [oh]

damn

Those damn trees. They keep getting in my [way]

I'm just filming

There's like bugs

There's literally bugs flying all [over] me good

Couch yeah

We have wood that's one way

How do you like this park?

sweet

Epic [I] want to cry, but a super [stub]

so

It is fun. I'm just like a little paralyzed -

pretty cool

Up down and around we go yeah buddy nice and smooth nice and fast

Plug it is here

You ready to go for a swim?

Alafia River State Park is absolutely stunning the mountain bike trails are built on a phosphate mining site

And there's over 20 miles of epic Mountain biking

after riding for many many years and in many different states

I'd have to say that this is my overall most favorite Mountain bike Trail

The technical sections the uPS and downs. It's so fast and flowy and the setting is absolutely beautiful

If you're in a mountain biking or horses Alafia State park would be a great option to stay at

They have full hookups and a beautiful campground, [and] it is just full of wildlife

[to] [pray]

Why did I wait seven eight years to ride this? I don't know

this is all volunteer [maintained], so

the State Park Volunteer maintained and

They maintained it unbelievably well

nice 360 [vectors] haughty hello

It's so cool

The trails have a little bit of everything

There's beginner intermediate and advanced

But I'd have to say that the majority of the trails there are intermediate or advanced and are super difficult and technical terrain

urato was tackling some of the gnarly stuff and

She was definitely a bit timid because one little wrong move and you're falling off the side [of] these little cliffs

oh

I got in like Far away, I

Get them in action. Oh

some people have spotted some pretty good-sized Gators from the swamp and

We were fortunate [enough] not to run across any in our tracks, but they are out there. [I] mean look at it swampland everywhere

you

oh

you

you

So we just pulled

most of the merchandise from Paddleboarder

down from the Dungeon up there

for the Millionth [time]

Every time I need to get something out. It's got to pretty much all come out because you never know what you need

So it's tough cotto's getting her family some

Cool stuff to bring back to Colombia

[she's] going to visit them [nyx] and about [ten] days almost

pretty exciting yes

so

Lots of work lots of mess try to organize this the best we can because we also have to fit two

Motorcycles in our garage when we leave here somehow

I don't [know] because we could barely fit what we had so let's see, and I see some booty

It's a mess in here

eh-eh

boom spell

final destination

Got stuff [everywhere]

So we're getting rid of the Christmas decorations, or I should save the tree and keeping the couple stockings. We have

Got a [wendell] down so we can fit two bikes up in this garage

If you were to ask me one of the least favorite things about living in an RV

It would be this right here doing this week in and week out

Having to take things down put it back up because that's the only place it'll fit

Oh my God her tail. She's wagging it so fresh

[see]

Take it in my uh-huh like this is a good stuff daddy

Who be in my face?

Oh, man

Huh?

Oh really all guys you so excited

you

All Time Low Takes Fuse's "Which Pop-Punk Band Are You?" Quiz - Duration: 3:26.

We're one of the bands in this category right?

So it's "which classic not-pop-punk band are you?"

Pick a pop punk festival.

Snowcore, Taste of Chaos, Warped Tour, The Fest.

I guess for us it would be Warped Tour.

I don't even know what those, well I guess Taste of Chaos.

Pick a state.

Uh, California, New Jersey, New York, or Florida.

Let's go with California. Because we had a song about it.

I'd say New Jersey though.

I would say New Jersey or New York.

Yeah, I agree.

Well, not gonna get us, but I'm just saying.

Pick a store at the mall.

Pac Sun, Hot Topic, Zumiez, or Journeys.

Hot Topic.

What's your favorite pop punk record label:

Fueled By Ramen, Lookout!, Fat Wreck, Kung Fu?

Fueled By Ramen!

Pick and old school pop punk band.

Buzzcocks, The Jam, Bad Religion, or Descendents?

We're going with Bad Religion.

Fasho.

What sport sounds the most appealing to you?

Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, what are sports?

Snowboarding!

Skateboarding.

How do we do this?

[talking over each other]

I've never skateboarded.

You used to skate! You had a skateboard.

I sucked.

If you could only listen to one Green Day single

for the rest of your life, would it be

American Idiot, Basket Case, Good Riddance, or Minority?

I think Basket Case.

Pick a pop punk era.

Late 70s, late 80s, mid 90s, 00's duh.

There was pop punk in the late 70s?

2000s, duh.

What pop punk band was in the late 70s?

How do you feel about your hometown?

It's the worst, I'm always trying to get out of this town,

suburbia is hell, it's fine.

It's fine!

I like Baltimore!

Are you on team Taking Back Sunday or Brand New?

What are you talking about?

Taking Back Sunday, obviously, Brand New, I love both bands.

I love both of them so this one is tough

but I gotta go with Brand New.

But there's an option "I love both bands!"

Ok, both.

Which word would your friends use to describe you?

Vivacious, talented, charismatic, punk.

Charismatic.

Certainly not talented.

Let's go charismatic.

If you could trade vocal chords with any of these performers-

is that a thing?- who would it be?

Patrick Stump, Brendon Urie, Luke Hemmings, Katy Perry.

Katy Perry.

I agree.

Although they're all great singers.

Of the following, which pop punk stereotype do you fully embody?

I love pizza,

I've been rocking fringe bands since '03,

skinny jeans all day every day,

I fall in love with folks who're just not that into me.

Is there an all of the above for this?

Skinny jeans, right? Gotta be.

I'd say skinny jeans.

We're still wearing skinny jeans.

[record scratch]

We're Paramore?

We are Paramore!

We're not all All Time Low?! That is how we find out?

We're Paramore.

I knew it. I always knew it.

I've been waking up every day thinking I'm someone else

so this makes sense.

I'm having a bit of an identity crisis right now.

Like Alex said on that little note, trust your gut.

I'm trying to think about what we did wrong.

It was the California one.

We're not from California!

I know-

They're from Tennessee!

It's not about where you're from,

it's about where your songs are about, probably.

We got songs about New Jersey!

All the hits!

You can't change 'em now.

He's trying to change 'em.

I don't think we were an option.

Has anyone done it and gotten us?

Late 70s pop punk.

It's all Paramore.

Jack's not letting this one go.

You cannot escape it.

Just let it go buddy, it's time to stop.

I always knew we were Paramore.

Bobcat S750s Save Time on the Farm - Duration: 2:03.

My whole philosophy is, if we take care

of cows they will take care of you, and

that's something has been ingrained from

my father. He also had a saying that

if you're going to milk cows and have a

dairy, have good cows. Cow comfort is a

big thing, like we say. So with our Bobcat

implements we use it to push in our feed.

We push in our feed four or five times a

day. We feed over 400 calves and we use

the implements in that and that's much

more efficient in what we try to do. We

also use that implement to break our

beds, the beds where the cows sleep so

they're fluffy and level and

comfortable for the cow. I fell in love

with the part of having good cattle

and showing them. As a little kid

I'll never forget the first time that

we got to go on a tour to the world

dairy expo in Madison, and I came in and

I saw these cows and I was hooked. So

with that I got the opportunity to judge

some county fairs, and judge more county

fairs, and then state fairs, and then

national and around the world, so

it just kind of grew from there.

Did a great job showing her son, she's a good

calf it's just a big class of tough ones.

The greatest thing about judging is

I get to meet people. If you're just a

commercial dairyman and you're here, you

meet some of the farmers in the area and

around and maybe some of your state, but

when you get to do this job, I know

people in every state that has a large

dairy population. I count many of

them as friends. I really enjoyed myself

doing that, I just enjoy the judging but

I also enjoy the people that I meet.

MATH Proves Time Travel IS Possible! - Duration: 5:31.

Ever since HG Wells published his book Time Machine in 1885, people have been interesting

in the topic of time travel.

Many have attempted to explain it, but most attempts led to failures.

But recently, a university professor (and avid reader of everything related to black

holes and science fiction) has supposedly proved time travel to be mathematically possible.

According to a new study revealed by Ben Tippett, a math and physics instructor at University

of British Columbia's Okanagan campus, math is able to prove the existence and possibility

of time travel.

"People think of time travel as something of fiction, and we tend to think it's not

possible because we don't actually do it.

But mathematically, it is possible."

Tippett's study was released in the IPOScience Journal CLASSICAL AND QUANTUM GRAVITY and

the description of his study states:

"In this paper, we present geometry which has been designed to fit a layperson's description

of a 'time machine'.

It is a box which allows those within it to travel backwards and forwards through time

and space, as interpreted by an external observer.

Timelike observers travel within the interior of a 'bubble' of geometry which moves

along a circular, acausal trajectory through spacetime.

If certain timelike observers inside the bubble maintain a persistent acceleration, their

worldlines will close."

Tippett said in his study that we can't look at a three-dimensional space but instead

a four-dimensional one where different directions are connected.

Basing his research off einstein's theory, he explains that space-time is curved, which

results in planets in the universe having curved orbits.

To picture this in your head, think of yourself standing next to a huge star.

At the place where you're standing, the geometry in space-time is curved, which means

everything near the star (and you) is going to have a curved trajectory and create a curved

path around the star.

From another point of view, in a flat or uncurved space-time, planets and stars would move in

straight lines rather than curved lines.

In Tippett's words: "The time direction of the space-time surface also shows curvature.

There is evidence showing the closer to a black hole we get, time moves slower," says

Tippett.

"My model of a time machine uses the curved space-time — to bend time into a circle

for the passengers, not in a straight line.

That circle takes us back in time."

In the study, Tippett showcased his mathematical model called the Traversable Acausal Retrograde

Domain in Space-time or TARDIS.

His model basically showcases a 'bubble' of space-time geometry that moves 8 times

faster than the speed of light, allowing it to move backward in time.

In other words, he wants to use the curvature of space-time in the universe to bend time

into a circle for "passengers" sitting in the time machine, and that circle allows

them to travel into the future and past.

He says: "It is a box which travels 'forwards' and then 'backwards' in time along a circular

path through spacetime...Delighted external observers would be able to watch the time

travellers within the box evolving backwards in time: un-breaking eggs and separating cream

from their coffee."

If you look at this picture, you'll get a better idea of what i'm talking about.

Person A is the time machine passenger and person B is the observer.

Both person A and person B will experience time in dramatically different ways.

"Within the bubble, A will see the B's events periodically evolve, and then reverse.

Outside the bubble, observer B will see two versions of A emerge from the same location:

one's clock hands will turn clockwise, the other counterclockwise."

Of course, if something sounds too good to be true it's probably not true.

Although tippett has done a great amount of research and possibly proven the existence

of time travel, he doubts that anyone will actually build a workable machine anytime

soon.

He says: "HG Wells popularized the term 'time machine' and he left people with

the thought that an explorer would need a 'machine or special box' to actually accomplish

time travel," .."While it is mathematically feasible, it is not yet possible to build

a space-time machine because we need materials – which we call exotic matter – to bend

space-time in these impossible ways, but they have yet to be discovered,".

To put it simply, Tippett came up with a model of a possible time traveling machine, but

we don't have the necessary materials to build the machine with our current technological

advancements.

Giants skipper Dempster battling time and injury to be ready for Saints NBL clash [ NEWS DAYS 24H ] - Duration: 5:27.

Giants skipper Dempster battling time and injury to be ready for Saints NBL clash

Giants skipper Dempster battling time and injury to be ready for Saints NBL clash      .   Sam Dempster has remained on the sidelines since the Rangers clash two weeks ago.

Sam Dempster desperately wants to lead the Nelson Giants against unbeaten title favourites Wellington Saints in their National Basketball League clash in Nelson on Friday. But all Nelson fingers are remaining firmly crossed.

The rugged Giants skipper admits theres no certainty hell be over the severe abdominal strain that he suffered against the Supercity Rangers two weeks ago and kept him out of last Fridays 86-74 win over the Hawkes Bay Hawks.

And its Fridays win, achieved without himself or Australian import point guard Kyle Adnam, that has Dempster looking positively towards Fridays Saints rematch.

Renowned for his blue collar approach in the physical exchanges, Dempster knew something was wrong when he went down against Rangers, also copping an accidental stray knee in the process.

When I went down, it felt like something tearing, so it wasnt the most pleasant feeling, but catching a knee after probably wasnt the best thing, he said.

Hes been working hard in the interim, including daily physiotherapy, but is still struggling to break through the pain barrier.

I can do most movements, my main problem at the moment is I cant run, I cant lift my leg too much.  Im hoping to be back by Friday, but Im no good to the team if I cant run.

I did a bit of training by myself [on Monday] and I was good doing everything until I tried to run. I physically feel like Im being stabbed in the same spot every time I try to lift my leg..

Still, his Giants team-mates delivered him a healthy pick-me-up with their win over a confident Hawks lineup. I was a bit nervous at times but it was pretty exciting to watch the boys play like that, he said.

Especially after a few [disparaging] things we read in the paper from the [Hawks] coach [Ben Hill] we kind of said `it doesnt matter who you do or dont have, weve got a good enough group to beat anyone in this league we believe, so lets come out and do it.

That fuelled the boys and we came out firing. [The Hawks] kind of looked like they were coming into the game thinking it was going to be an easy win and that was their first mistake really and we took advantage of that.

Im really proud of the boys and very impressed sitting back and watching them do that . but yeah, a really cool game to watch..

Now everyones focus is on a talent-laden 14-0 Saints team that scored a comprehensive 110-84 over the Giants in their only previous encounter in Wellington four weeks ago.

I really dont want to miss this one, its kind of the challenge I suppose for every team to see who can be the team to beat Wellington.

We believe we can do it. Weve seen them once before so we look at them and say `hey, we can beat them, we just have to have a pretty big night obviously. .

But obviously after last week with myself and Kyle out the boys showed that anythings possible really, so theyll be ready to go whether Im playing or not.

The next person in line will be ready to step up like Tom Ingham did. Theyve definitely got a good team, they can score from the outside and from the inside.

Weve got scoring power, weve got people who can shoot and Finns [Finn Delany] probably one of the best people at getting to the hoop in the league.

So weve got people who can match up with their guys, its just going to have to be a team effort..

Not for Everyone. It's Fishing TIME! - Duration: 1:10.

This video needs to start off by saying

THIS IS A HIGHER RISK IDEA AND NOT FOR EVERYONE!

Leveraged Loans can be very lucrative.

If you were to borrow $100,000 at 4%

and invest into a Qualified Investment Portfolio.

Your cost to borrow is $4,000 per year.

If your income has you in a 30% tax bracket

that means you would be able to

write off 30% of the $4,000 or $1200.

So really your net cost to borrow is $2,800 or 2.8%

If you invest that money and get a 7% rate of return,

that's $7,000 profit.

Now deduct that $2,800 expense and that

leaves you with a $4,200 gain

over and above your expense

which equates to a 250% return.

How does that sound?

Pretty Awesome eh.

However two things can go wrong.

Interest rates can go up

and your profits can go down.

This is a long-term strategy

that you need to be committed too.

My PLAN is complete.

I'm using the bank's money to reach my financial goals.

Just like the wealthy do.

It's TIME to catch the big one!

Illinois Professors: Eric Snodgrass on Time Management - Duration: 1:12.

Alright, so what is your biggest piece of advice for students applying to college right now?

You know, I think the most important thing that any student

coming into the University of Illinois

needs to make sure that they do well is manage their time.

You're gonna find that when you get into college and you have freedom with your time that

you need to make sure that you're making the best decisions with it.

Now, you need to enjoy college.

You need to get here and you need to do the things that college students do.

But at the same time, you're here to get that education.

That education needs to have value and substance. You're going to get that

by attending your courses, working very hard on your course assignments,

making sure that you're interacting with faculty,

and that you are really engaged in the learning process.

I find that students that often struggle are students that procrastinate.

They don't work hard. They don't see the change in the level

of intensity going from high school to college.

Therefore, I really want students, the moment they get here,

to get engaged in the learning process,

and to interact with faculty. Let us help you

learn how to learn. Let us help you. Let us show you the ways

by which you can manage time and do very very well.

I want every one of my students to know that that

is probably the most important thing, time management at the University

ABC ruined Dirty Dancing with a terrible remake. Twitter had the time of its life. - Duration: 3:57.

ABC ruined Dirty Dancing with a terrible remake. Twitter had the time of its life.

There comes a time in the midst of a turbulent sociopolitical climate and rising international tensions when humanity needs to unite, to rally against a common enemy. Thus it was that ABC's remake of Dirty Dancing was the No.

1 worldwide Twitter trend Wednesday evening, as fans of the 1987 classic starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey came together to indulge in several hours of ridicule while the remake aired in the US.

@Twitter Literally just reactivated it tonight to let @ABCNetwork know even the un-twitterverse is displeased with this trash — Jolee (@MissJolee2U) May 25, 2017. Any one else not having the time of their life? #DirtyDancing — Molly Dietz (@mmdietz) May 25, 2017.

The remake of Dirty Dancing is the most traumatizing thing I have witnessed since Election Night 16. #DirtyDancing #LeaveClassicsAlone — Briana Ryan (@BrianaLeeRyan) May 25, 2017.

@ABC you could have remade Gone With The Wind using the cast from Big Bang Theory and it would have been better than this mess #DirtyDancing — Chery McLemore (@cherymc1) May 25, 2017.

Please put baby in the corner. Turn off the lights. And never look back. #DirtyDancing — Reese (@NY2Pgh) May 25, 2017. Was ABC's remake really that bad? In a word, yes.

The acting was lackluster; Abigail Breslin played Baby mainly by looking surprised and doing her best teen Kirsten Dunst impression.

As Johnny Castle, Colt Prattes could sing just fine, and he had a pompadour which tended to effectively distract us from his lack of facial expressions, but his dancing was nowhere on par with Swayze's legendary performance in the original film.

Breslin's dancing was even worse — and it didn't help that she had far more chemistry with her other dance partner, Nicole Scherzinger (who played Penny), than with Prattes.

In particular, it was difficult not to ridicule the famous water lift scene for its cringeworthy differences from the original. twitter. com/eHk22LStLz — David Wyatt (@Davidwyatt78) May 25, 2017.

Its like the epitome of a Pinterest fail. #DirtyDancing #nailedit pic.twitter.com/w4TLXDPGVo — Stacey Nasser (@s_nasser20) May 25, 2017. Al Roker did a better job #DirtyDancing pic. twitter. com/KU4SpvsZcZ — MiSomnia (@FreyaWalnuts) May 25, 2017.

Despite featuring choreography from Hamilton's Andy Blankenbuehler, the remake's dancing in general failed to impress. The Original vs the Remake #DirtyDancing pic. twitter. com/U8XzsP6o0G — SAMO_Basquiat (@SAMO_Basquiat) May 25, 2017.

Everyone on my timeline is asking why ABC didnt cast better dancers. Answer: real dancers know that you dont mess with #DirtyDancing — Carolyn (@care4volleyball) May 25, 2017.

Most viewers — or at least the ones on Twitter — seemed to agree that the main problem with ABC's Breslin/Prattes pairing was its lack of chemistry.

But it didn't help that the film essentially turned one of the most notoriously sexy romances of our time into a Disney movie (which perhaps shouldn't be surprising, since ABC is owned by Disney, but still).

The remake departed from the original in several significant ways.

Most of the Dirty Dancing's original themes — a hypocritical upper crust, social and class tensions, and frigid family dynamics — were watered down with heartwarming family reconciliations, interracial friendships, and empowered girls being empowered together.

Nearly every song that featured in the original's iconic soundtrack was a remake itself, heavily remixed or newly covered; many major songs (like "Do You Love Me," "Big Girls Don't Cry," and, of course, "I've Had the Time of My Life") were reworked to turn the movie into an actual musical, with the characters themselves singing as well as dancing.

Notably, however, the remake did keep the original's famous abortion storyline essentially unchanged, while also using it to drive Penny and Baby's closer friendship.

ABC changing story lines and adding new dance numbers in the #DirtyDancing remake has me like pic. twitter. com/Yopu24xfwf — Emily Simpson ✨ (@emilyesimpson_) May 25, 2017. Several minor storylines were cut or significantly changed, while newer, cheesier ones were added.

The famous line "I carried a watermelon" was changed (or flubbed) to "I carried his watermelon," a travesty which sparked its own protest hashtag.

The even-more-famous "Loverboy" scene — in which the original characters lip-synced "Love Is Strange" — was awkwardly turned into one of the aforementioned sung musical numbers, sending numerous fans into some sort of virtual apoplexy.

And worst of all, the original nebulous-but-happy ending was extended to include a clunky, bittersweet flash-forward shipped straight from La La Land, parting our lovers for, you know, maybe forever, with the lackluster final words, "Keep on dancin.

'" Like anyone would want to dance after this. Oh ok, so ruining the whole movie wasnt enough. You had to ruin the love story too. #dirtydancing — Sarah (@UberGuber) May 25, 2017.

Reasons why #DirtyDancing remake sucks 1. HORRIBLE ALTERNATE ENDING— Olivia Breen (@Liv_Taylor3) May 25, 2017. #DirtyDancing nice they included the shot of the people who appreciate this remake pic. twitter. com/1FXlp86Cdw — Genesa Camacho (@camacho_gen) May 25, 2017.

Look on the bright side, fans — you'll always have the original in all its (mostly) untarnished glory.

Finding joy in this GIF over whats actually on my tv right now #DirtyDancing pic. twitter. com/3yqqVKSV1v — Jessica Floyd Regitz (@JessFPardue) May 25, 2017.

ONCE UPON A TIME... - Duration: 7:04.

ONCE UPON A TIME...

CHILDREN'S AND HOUSEHOLD TALES, BROTHERS GRIMM.

Folklore collections that synthesize into a single written text cultural traditions such as fairy tales, oral history,

and popular beliefs (as told in homes and at social gatherings) have been compiled since the Middle Ages.

The term "fairy tale" was coined by French writer Madame d'Aulnoy in the late 17th century, but it is her contemporary Charles Perrault's retellings

of old fairy tales that are better known.

English antiquarian William Thoms first defined "folklore" in a letter to The Athenaeum magazine in 1846.

Some tales, such as the 14th-century Welsh Mabinogion, have a religious or spiritual function—but folk stories do not usually contain references to

religion.

Real places, people, or events are not cited.

Instead, these stories are ahistorical, existing "once upon a time.," and readers and audiences expect stock characters, random magic,

reward and revenge, and a "happily ever after" ending.

Poetic or literary references and realism are rarely used; fairy tales are written in a plain style, using mainly straightforward imagery,

and plot is key: these stories power along with astonishing swiftness.

Enriching Western culture.

The Brothers Grimm, like many folklorists since, embarked on a scholarly project to identify and preserve the spirit of the people by recording the

fairy tales being told across their culture.

This was an epic romantic venture: interest in folklore was inspired by a rise in nationalism and cultural pride,

and the purpose of the Grimms' collection was no different.

Nor were they the only European scholars to undertake such an enterprise, and their peer group at their university shared their enthusiasm for folk

traditions.

But the Grimms' work, as reflected in their Children's and Household Tales, represents the greatest body of stories collected in Europe and is the

most widely translated and read. W. H. Auden declared Grimms' tales "among the few common-property books upon which Western culture can be founded."

The methodology for gathering stories did not include sorties into the woods, as is often picturesquely believed.

The Grimms' sources generally came to them, and some stories were already written down, such as "The Juniper Tree," sent to them by painter Philip

Otto Runge.

In their first edition, the Grimms wrote for a mainly adult audience.

It was only after Edgar Taylor's English translation of their work in 1823 was successful with children that they made revisions to sanitize the

German stories.

For example, their first version of "Rapunzel" openly referred to her pregnancy (outside marriage), but in the revised version she simply fattens.

Yet violence was not necessarily minimized.

The French Cinderella, Cendrillon, in Charles Perrault's tale, forgives her stepsisters and finds good husbands for them.

But in the Grimms' punitive version, Cinderella's helper birds blind the sisters by pecking out their eyes.

Violence notwithstanding, the popularity of the Grimms' collected tales has endured, and they have sustained multiple interpretations and rewrites in

various media over the years.

The romantic depiction of "Once upon a time" continues to manifest inextinguishable truths, which, along with the allure of a happy and harmonious

ending, appeal across the generations.

Archetypal characters in folklore.

The magical helper:

In the Grimms' version, Cinderella weeps by her mother's grave, marked by a hazel tree that then gives her an outfit to go to the ball (Perrault has

a fairy godmother instead of the tree).

The wicked stepmother:

These characters were mothers in the Grimms' early versions: the sanctity of motherhood was preserved by changing the texts to "stepmother."

The witch or sorceress:

This archetype creates opportunities for shifts in plot and for the triggering of magical but often terrible events.

The trickster:

This archetype creates menace and obstacles in a story to challenge the natural order.

The transformed animal:

Grimms' tales are littered with characters that have been transformed into birds and other animals and that might become human again under the right

circumstances.

Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm.

Known as the Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) were celebrated German academics, cultural researchers, linguists,

and lexicographers.

The oldest surviving sons of a family of six children, they were raised in Hanau, Hesse.

Despite poverty following the death of their lawyer father, they were educated at the University of Marburg, thanks to a well-connected aunt.

The Grimms are credited with developing an early methodology for collecting folk stories that is now the basis of folklore studies.

They were also notable philologists (studying the language in written historical sources).

Both brothers also worked on a monumental (32-volume) German dictionary, which was unfinished in their lifetimes.

Other key works:

1813-16 Old German Forests,

1815 Poor Heinrich by Hartmann von der Aue,

1815 Songs from the Elder Edda,

1816-18 German Sagas,

1852-1960 German Dictionary.

IN CONTEXT.

FOCUS: Folklore collections.

BEFORE:

c.1350-1410 Welsh stories based on oral tales are collected in the Mabinogion, the earliest prose literature of Britain.

1697 French author Charles Perrault writes Tales of Mother Goose, a collection of rewritten and original tales.

1782-87 German author Johann Karl August Musaus publishes a popular collection of satirical folk stories.

AFTER:

1835-49 Finnish folklore is celebrated in the epic poem the Kalevala by Elias Lonnrot.

1841 Norwegian Folktales, by Peter Christen Asbjornsen and Jørgen Moe, is published.

1979 The Bloody Chamber, by English novelist Angela Carter, challenges traditional folktale portrayals of women.

In olden days, when wishing still worked...
